- Dodge Ram 5.7 Rebel Oil Change. Is the Dodge Ram Rebel the worst vehicle to change your own oil in? In this video I comically go about changing the oil in my 2019 Dodge Ram Rebel. In the process I show you what makes it difficult as well as some sneaky tricks so that you don't completely ruin your garage floor.

Easiest oil change is my RAM Rebel with just a couple of tips. Leave the oil cap on tight during your initial drain so the oil doesn't come out too quickly, then loosen when its just dripping. The oil filter, I use the two (x2) Zip Lock bag method. Break the seal, slip on the first bag, continue to loosen until the oil starts to drip out, wait until it stops. Slip off the first bag, slip on the 2nd bag, and keep going until it's removed. I have a small shallow plastic pan to the right of me to put the zip lock bags in when I'm done. These tips results in nearly zero drips or mess. Recommend the 1 gallon size bag, when you slip it over the oil filter, push the bag all the way up until the bottom of the bag is touching the bottom of the filter before you proceed with loosening the filter.
OMG, I've seen so many RAM oil change videos, not because I don't know how to change my oil, but because every time I need to; I think to myself, there must be a better way. It sucks so bad and think, this was RAM's 5th generation :). The key I see is to approach it with a humorous attitude. Thanks man.
Lol its honestly not the worst but the swaybar bit cracks me up. Honestly easiest vehicles to change the oil on have been my Corvettes when I had them. Drain plug doesnt hit anything, filter is directly on the bottom. Ugh why cant more OEMs make it simple or at least mess free!
@@truckandroll989 You are the first I've seen take the sway bar down. I installed a Fumoto F106N drain valve in place of the drain plug years ago and it made that part way easier. Sway bar was close to making contact with the nipple so I trimmed it down about a 1/4". Still plenty left to a little hose on though. Not needed but keeps the wind from blowing the little stream all over. Also tried the oil udder XL yesterday and punctured the filter and wow, cleanest oil change I've done on the RAM ever. Still not Corvette easy but tolerable.

Those oil filters can be a real pain to get off. I use a K&N oil filter only because it has a 1" nut welded to the bottom of the filter so you can use a socket to get it off. The oil filter placement I find to be a nightmare. The K&N filter is more expensive but it makes the job a lot easier.
I am thinking about trying Toyota Genuine motor oil in my Ram 1500. It has a great additive package and is API SN certified. Anyone have thoughts or experience?

Someone suggested you put a small sandwich bag around filter. When the oil drains out, you catch the oil and filter and lower into oil pan.

Have you ever noticed your oil pressure dropping to 30 when idle on you rebel ? My 2020 model does this even when it fully warmed up
I haven’t paid super close attention but 30psig of oil pressure at hot idle should be more than sufficient. Old school rule of thumb was 10psig/1000rpm. Try blipping the throttle in neutral, you should see it rise. Whats more important is what it is under load. If, for example, it was always 30psig even if driving up a grade id be a bit more worries but thats fine at idle

To be honest I dont know the oil filter wrench size but I always drop the sway bar now. 4 15mm bolts. Torque spec is 45 ft lbs once you tighten them back up
Are you supposed pop the hood and remove the oil cap before you drain the oil?
You don’t have to. It will drain quicker though since you aren’t creating any sort of a vacuum when the oil drains out if you open the cap

In theory Im sure. Its honestly not the absolute worst (video is mostly satire) but its clear when the truck was designed they were not thinking about easy maintenance
Do you think there is enough space between the pan and the sway bar to replace the factory drain bolt with a fumoto/EZ drain valve ?
Thats a tough one. It might fit but the risk could be high if it gets bumped and/or doesnt fit. To be honest as much as I joke it isn’t too bad of an oil change. Given that im at 45,000+ mi now and multiple changes here are my tips
1. Just have an impact handy to remove the 4 sway bar bolts. Aside from being silly it only takes me 60s tops. I put some anti seize on those bolts to be safe
2. The biggest mess is the oil filter location above the power steering rack. The tip is to get a long thin piece of cardboard and wrap it around the filter and slowly loosen. You wind up draining the oil down the side of the filter, along the cardboard, and into your pan.
Following those tips i was able to do my last change and maybe (maybe) spilled 1 small drop of oil.
@@truckandroll989 since you had the suspension unloaded in this video- the bar can’t go UP anymore- only downward when the suspension is under load if I’m not mistaken ?
@@SHODUUP So the sway bar is only there to transmit a force seen on one side of the suspension to the other side. The sway bar itself is connected to “spherical” end links. As long as both sides of the vehicle are equally loaded (or unloaded) you should able to move the bar around without any issue. Hope that helps!

I just take my own oil, and a Mopar SRT filter. Too the dealer and they only charge me $15.00.
Ram 5.7 is the worst oil change I have ever done. But it's a challenge, so we do it.

Is it ok to just jack under the rear diff like that?
Im sure someone will disagree but thats the way its been done for decades and decades - youre good to go. The only time im careful is if the lip of the diff cover hangs down lower than the housing, then I try to ensure to the weight is on the axle/housing

@@Pskawt so all in all my truck has been relatively trouble free. That being said. I had an issue with an ignition coil and the apple car play (stereo) has been quirky. If i could do it again I might get a Ford with the ecoboost for better mileage. From a looks standpoint i really prefer the 19+ ram. It depends on what/how you want to use it. Ive heard about lifter issues on the Rams at 100k mi or so if you arent good about oil changes
You seat the filter and then another 1/4 turn is all that is needed. I have never seen anyone fill a filter before installation.
Although this video was mostly meant to be satire the reason you pre fill an oil filter is to reduce the time it takes for your engine to build oil pressure. Fill the filter you hear almost none of that. The long term affects are probably null but i hate the sound of hearing an engine idle without much oil pressure on an empty filter.
tighten the oil filter as he said !!! mine is a 2016 Ram HD 2500 5.7 4X4 and if you don't crank the filter down it WILL LEAK !!!!!!!

Yea I have since found a properly places cut up card board box can work too. Its not the worst car to change the oil in but the filter placement is certainly poop

That's the way I would do my oil change IF I had gotten it done: jacked her up (2016 silver/black/Ram boxes/5.7) and got the jacks in place (easiest part of this project), forgot the nice clothes too (should have changed because I can't do anything without 14 or 15 or 16 + tools out and making a mess on top of that), forgot the oil catchment plastic pan, (no creeper) back out to get the pan, cut the BIG piece of cardboard I had been saving why? I guess just for this occasion (just like this guy did - gravel driveway), back under, back out because none of the 14, 15, or 16 wrenches fit (brought the tool case out just in case the 17 wrench didn't fit) back under, a couple drops of water on my glasses (just washed the truck) so back out to clean my glasses, back under, back out because of a couple more water droplets on my glasses, back under with a can of air, getting kind of dark (started this project with lots of light) back out for a torch (that's what some people somewhere on earth call a flashlight), back under, back out for a bigger and better and brighter "torch", back under, getting a little chilly, enough of this crap, back out final time - went in washed my hands, had a tv dinner while watching Steve McQueen jumping his mustang. Went to bed after checking the current situation in the Ukraine/Russian "special operation" and 15 minutes of depressing news.
Next morning to my buddies oil change shop (private not a chain - 5 guys plus owner - doing my oil change plus another one in the second bay), oil changed in 30 minutes, windows cleaned and Rebel vacuumed, wrote a check for $67 + change, shot the bull with the owner for a few minutes (he was oily). Ya, I know, I'm not a "purest" but I drive my Rebel onto the ramp and I drive it off myself (I know the owner very well should have went there in the first place) my oil is changed in 30 minutes with nice clothes on and spent most of the 30 minutes walking around the shop and chatting with the young lady that takes the money, after picking up my 19 year old daughter (a real pain - don't tell her that, oh, ell I've already told her that so it's ok if you do too) and to our favorite Mexican restaurant (live in northern New Mexico.) The waitress didn't have to tell me to wash my hands because why - THEY WERE CLEAN. Best $67 I've spent lately. In another 3 months I'll do it again - straight to his oil change shop (don't use anything of that synthetic "drive 45,000 miles between changes) Castrol GTX and changed every 3 months (-:
What’s annoying is the stupid spot they put the stupid oil filter 😂 I didn’t have problems with the drain I have a pretty big pan ha and yes I have a 2”5 inwith 35 and it’s definitely tall even though I’m 6”4

Yea if it would clear the sway bar that could work. Honestly just dropping the sway bar makes it pretty easy. The oil filter is really whats in an annoying spot

Yeah there is a worse oil change, the gm 5.3l (or any LS/modern LT for that matter) is worse, at least you can fully grip the hemi oil filter with your hand rather then on the 5.3l where your forced to do a balancing trick with your fingers with the risk of it slipping and dropping into the oil pan and making a mess because the god damn filter is so tight up against the oil pan 🤦🏼♂️

QUICK TIP: Slightly loosen oil filter but, not so much where oil starts to leak down, Take a gallon ziplock bag, cut one of the corners off to create a funnel. Zip tie the ziplock bag around the filter as tight as possible. Take a #2 phillips screw driver and slide it into the hole in the corner of the ziplock bag you made previously. With the screw driver inserted into the ziplock bag, use a hammer to TAP THE SCREWDRIVER GENTLY, punching one or more holes into the bottom of the oil filter. DO NOT HAMMER IT LIKE A BLACKSMITH TRYING TO WORK STEEL FRESH FROM A FORGE. Allow to drain fully, then remove the filter while the ziplock bag is still zip tied to the filter. No fuss, no mess and no extra cleanup needed. You're Welcome!
I got a tip for you I change my oil too. I got a Ram Rebel you drain your oil out of your pan put the plug back in take the oil filter off the old one put the new one back on and then slide your oil pan catch and undo your oil plug again you would be surprised how much old oil still comes out of your pan after you take your old oil filter off.
Interesting. Ive seen where taking your fill cap off drastically increases how quickly it trains (no longer creates a vacuum). Maybe something similar? I’ll try it next time.
Also get your self an oil filter relocate kit..
Harbor Freight jacks are great I put 4 of them under my 56000 pound dump Truck loaded with gold nuggets and they worked great!! I just wasn't under it when they Collapsed and it hit the Floor
I think the key is 56000 lbs vs 5600 lol
