You usually introduce yourself on a text to someone you actually do know if it’s the first time you’re texting after having only recently exchanged numbers. I don’t know anyone that this hasn’t happened to. It’s not that they’re introducing themselves to a stranger, it about making sure the other person knows that the number that’s texting them is someone they know, not a total stranger.

Got off the phone with him and went to text my best friend letting him know I couldn’t go. I texted him “Hey my dad’s being a huge F*G, and said I can’t go. I finished that baby and IMMEDIATELY sent it, TO MY DAD by mistake. You can imagine how that went.

Situations like that are probably either work colleagues just starting to hang out (might have shared phone numbers for the first time at a group outing to a driving range), or friends where one got a new phone with a new number (which the receiver wouldn't recognise).
