  • The S-Boston Handwarmer is generally accepted as the most convenient and performance oriented handwarmer on the market today. We'll look at some of the aspects of this unit that have both been praised, and critized for. And we'll clarify some misconceptions about things like not being able to replace the catalyst.
    Update 2020: Since this video was made, we have found a spring suitable for use with catalyst replacement in the S-Boston.

    I use a sensitive electronic scale to measure the weight of the unit to gauge how much fuel is remaining. Works pretty well to do partial fills without having to run to empty every time, and allows me to top it off at the start of the day.

      That will work. I get naptha for free (it's left behind by campers all summer), so I just get lazy and let them burn out when I get home. If it's an S-Boston I'll reverse the cap however, as that's pretty straightforward.

    The s boston truly is a beautifully made hand warmer. It's a shame that it is somewhat in short supply. I've had poor experiences with the zippo in the past, and I'm hoping the s boston will prevail

      We've not encountered a supply problem. It just isn't stocked by as many retailers as other brands.

    Maybe I missed it, it does the catalytic converter material touch the cotton batten in the tank or is there a small volume space so as to collect fumes? I would not think you would want fluid in the converter material? You might get a candle light flame, ruining the material?

      You'll notice the reservoir has a raised 'neck' around the opening. The packing material should roughly be flush with the bottom of the neck. The catalyst cannot oxidize fumes if it is wet, therefore it's necessary to keep it dry.

    Thanks for the great review. Where can I purchase the replacement catalyst that you show at 14:05? Thanks!

      With the cap on tight with the rubber stopper over the neck of the reservoir, it should last a week.

    What is the lighter you use at the 8:00 mark? That's really cool! Thanks for the video!

      That's my EDC when in the backcountry. Butane lighter with electronic ignition. I believe we are selling them on our site still, so I'll add them to the handwarmer order form.

      I use whatever happens to be handy, prefer USB if one is available.

      which usb lighter do you recommend?

    • @MountainParameters

      Ones that have the 'arc' between two electrodes, and the head sticks out far enough so you do not singe the hair on your hand when you ignite a stove, or in the case of a handwarmer, stick out far enough that you can pass it over the catalyst head.

    Do these have to sit upright all the time?

    • @MountainParameters
      @MountainParameters  4 года назад +1

      If you overfill it, shake out as much as possible. Then let it sit inverted on top of some paper towels for ten or fifteen minutes. Then light it, and let it run in an upright position for another ten or fifteen minutes before you carry it in random positions.

    Omfg, sizable platinum catalyst pads are impossible to find for sale online and there's no local catalyst/catalytic heating manufacturers locally to scavenge off-cuts from. Why is this stuff so damn rare?!? It's not even like there's much elemental platinum in it. :[

    • @MountainParameters
      @MountainParameters  6 лет назад +5

      Our pads are cut into 1.5 sq inch pieces which is about right for 3 head rebuilds.

    Is it safe to get batteries that hot all the time?
