    Did you consider that by sealing the cups with tape you're slowly starving the burner of oxygen? The burners need a steady flow of oxygen to create heat. While your tape seals are for sure not perfect, they'll restrict the oxygen flow a lot more than just putting the hand warmer in your pocket.

      Your right but as shown they were still producing after the test so I would consider it to be valid as the same top an bottom cup was being used in each test with a before an after temp reading so great job on the content!

      Agree 100%. The catalytic heating element is somewhat of a smoldering fire. Fuel, heat and oxygen is required for these little gems to work. Altering the any of the three components will effect the heat output.

  • @MrFastFox666
    @MrFastFox666 4 года назад +8

    Both warmers produce the same amount of heat. What produces the heat is the catalytic burner, and it's the same unit for both warmers. Since the smaller warmer is... Well... Smaller, it'll be warmer too.
    Also, By putting the warmers in the cups, you're starving them of oxygen and essentially shutting them off, that's why the temperature only rose in the first 4 minutes or so.

  • @mr.sirhoffer5553
    @mr.sirhoffer5553 6 лет назад +17

    I enjoyed watching your experiments....however, the two warmers give off the same amount of heat, the only difference is the amount of time they can sustain the exothermic reaction. The burners are the same, they are both burning fuel at an equal pace and thus giving off the same amount of joules. The smaller one feels hotter to the touch as you said, smaller surface area...which is correct (more heat is retained in the metal since less heat is able to escape to the environment as compared to the bigger one).....the larger one warms the air around it to a higher degree due to a larger surface area (larger SA allows more heat to escape to the environment, which is why the air is warmer and the metal is cooler compared to the smaller one)....but all in all...the joule output rate is equivalent.

    • @TromboneCrazyy
      @TromboneCrazyy  4 года назад

      Not exactly. Since the small one gets hotter because of less SA to distribute the heat, it also warms the fuel more which would cause the fuel to evaporate faster, possibly providing more fuel to the burner and more heat output. But overall, the tests were very basic and not super exact.

  • @oinc7320

    Also as the fuel warms the more easy it is to create the vapor for the converter to oxidized, the little Zippo has less volume of metal to heat, less fuel, it should get hotter quicker. You need to let these go for about an hour, unbagged, then take the temperature. You can accidentally stop the oxidation by thermal shock, say taking them out of the bag in very cold sub zero weather, putting icy hands around the fuel tank.

      If you really want it to warm your body quickly, put the warmer on a pulse point such as the wrist. Blood is closer to the skin and the heat and as it circulates through the body it gets to the extremities faster. Good thought though.

      silver one get's a bit warmer than the other versions for they have a coat of paint restricting the warmth it gives off.

    • @crabtrap
      @crabtrap 5 лет назад +1

      @@Tidushii that is exactly incorrect. flat black paint actually helps transfer heat, where as chrome reflects it back in(radiant heat). VW used to use black valve covers on the aircooled beetles for this very reason, it allowed heat to pass thru and dissipate. they discouraged chrome covers as they retained heat. that siad i doubt in this small an item it really even matters.

    I’ve had 4 Zippo’s. All of them were terrible. They often leak and cause a chemical burn on your thigh if they’re in your pocket. They also stop working randomly while plenty of fuel is still inside.
    I changed to the Peacock brand and they work flawlessly. The catalizer starts quicker and doesn’t shutoff until it’s out of fuel. The seam where the top and bottom of the tank side meets never leaks. They just work.

    I cringe at all these videos where you hold the flame to the catalyst. You aren’t supposed to do that. Just warm the burner with the flame till you see the ember in it. Direct flame damaged the fibers and reduces the life of the burner.

    • @TromboneCrazyy
      @TromboneCrazyy  4 года назад

      The instructions only say apply flame to burner for 10 secs. Doesn't specify how. I could see how excessive heat could damage it especially with a torch lighter, but a soft flame lighter for 10 seconds shouldn't be that bad or they should be more specific in their instructions. Then again, maybe they're trying to sell more burners.

    • @bizzarrogeorge
      @bizzarrogeorge 4 года назад +1

      I've searched high and low for why my first catalyst and then my replacement one performed so poorly, and I think you are the only person to post the answer. I did what the image on the box and the videos like this said, and had the flame contacting the catalyst. It got black as Ash, and only a small, pea sized portion "worked" to create the reaction, producing mild heat. Then the second time, that once good pea sized portion became black as Ash as I held the flame to it, and it's active "working" area got reduced to a tiny red pepper flakes size, producing no heat whatsoever. I then tried repeatedly to lightly brush the ash off with a q-tip, but it just rips up the catalyst. So you're saying just put the flame to the neck on a good catalyst? Thanks.
