Not gonna lie, I actually celebrated Will’s Birthday March 22. I listened to stuff that I feel Will would listen to on his mixtape; and I mean actual 80s material… I really wish all the best for him in S5.
I think the reason that makes birthdaygate seem most intentional is that from Will's perspective Rink-O-Mania was all about Will feeling forgotten and ignored. So obviously having your birthday forgotten would feel really serious especially in a scene describing and detailing hiw ignored Will feels

also- in the opening scene in season 4 with brenner doing a crossword puzzle, there’s a horoscope ad with dates on the newspaper, i think this could be an easter egg for birthdaygate

Just because the Duffer Brothers remember certain stuff from season 2 doesn't mean they've watched it recently. The things we were meant to recognize were pretty significant details that would be easy to remember. I also just can't believe that both Will's mom AND his brother would forget his birthday.

So it's possible it was all done on purpose, the writers didn't think we'd realize it but when we did they had to lie that they forgot Will's birthday.
this retroactively fixes one bit of weirdness that didn't land for me, which was funny weed comedy Jonathan: Jonathan had to be stoned out of his gourd to forget Will's birthday. and he would HAVE to have forgotten with everyone else because if he remembered he'd have said something to Joyce and El lmao??
