1st time watching your video and I Love it as you talk slow and I understand very clearly . I watch many other in previous but all talk so fast which I don’t understand what they talking about …
PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!! Can you make more videos on the other major electrolytes as well? Such as sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, and magnesium. This helped so much.
Thank you so much for your suggestion! I am always looking for ideas for videos and content to share information on. I will keep this in mind for sure 🙂
Wait so does that mean that if there is a calcium deficiency, this can also cause hypomagnesemia? Sorry, I'm not in nursing school yet, but I got curious ..
No worries at all! I love that you are diving into the information to prepare yourself for nursing school. Calcium and magnesium fall & rise together. Magnesium helps transport calcium out of the cell, so a lack of magnesium can lead to low calcium. These two electrolytes actually work to keep one another balanced, so you can think of them as a complementary relationship! I hope this provides some clarity 🙂-Kristine
Wouldn't it make sense that hypomag causes decreased GI motility because magnesium plays a role in maintaining peristalsis. So lack of magnesium means peristalsis can't occur, which is also why patients who are low on magnesium are at risk for paralytic ileus. It makes sense that high levels of magnesium cause diarrhea because it has a laxative effect, like milk of magnesia. I hear of people experiencing diarrhea, but to my understanding constipation is more common.
Hi there! Constipation can definitely occur with hypomagnesemia! Diarrhea can also occur due to a fluid imbalance when the GI tract cannot properly absorb water due to low magnesium levels (magnesium helps regulate fluid balance in the intestines), which results in loose stools. I hope this provides clarification on this!
