Mixed by the Drummer ;-)
He's way too loud.
You could hear both guitarists so well!!!! Amazing!
Haaaa This is Nawlins music these guys are all killer players but this is when someone should walk up and call a penalty. You have to at least get the drums right.
Honestly better than drums being too quiet, this shit grooves. Plus you can hear everyone plenty well
I like it man ;-)
Tomo Fujita makes me forget my problems and enjoy life. Man that guy just shreds. What a legend.
Lol, damn Tomo, give somebody else a turn. I love how at home he is in funk.
Tomo is SMOOTH!!!
This is the absolute best jam i ever heard in my life. Unreal
nothing short of GREAT!!! It looks so much fun playing with Fujita on stage.
Loved Josh Smith's playing. Pure understatement.
but it didnt djent!
he seems to be a man who can enjoy listening
Could watch Tomo play all day (and Kirk)!
Tomo plays “Tequila “ melody in his solo 🤘🤘🤘 so badass
I noticed that too haha that was amazing:)
He played Jean Pierre, not Tequila
Whats with all the hate? They performed great and had fun doing it! You guys need to take a chill pill!
been and still am a bass player for 55 years, and just love this song! Both listening to it and playing it. This is a fine version.
Tomo showing off with this one. Kirk’s tone on that Les Paul couldn’t get much better. And Josh Smith just sitting back even though it’s his band. Great stuff 👏🏻
Great job guys! That drummer & bassist can hold it down like nobody's business!!
My god the talent on this stage
The whole thing is so good, but when Kirk and Tomo start playing off each other things really got cooking!
Before you scream about a soloing etiquette foul here, consider this: There's a very good chance what you're seeing here is coming off wrong and it's not anyone's fault including Tomo. It's an unfortunate misconception due to lack of context. Give me a few minutes to explain and give my old friend Tomo Fujita the benefit of the doubt while I map this out. He's a salt-of-the-earth type of guy as well as a great player and master educator who deserves respect. Trust me, he knows what is up and would not deliberately run over someone's solo. Dig this: What we don't know is what capacity Tomo is serving at this moment of the performance, but I have pretty solid idea what it is. Judging by the title and description this was a NAMM performance sponsored by Eminence where Josh Smith and his band served as the "house band". The way this likely went down is Eminence coordinated the schedule so that each of their artists took the stage as a leader for one tune. Since Josh's band is pointed out in the text above, it is Josh who is serving as the MD. Part of that job is staying up on stage for the entire performance to lead (when needed) and, let's be honest if you're Josh Smith, to draw people. Another indicator is how Josh plays the least and steps back for most of the performance. That's MD etiquette as well the right move given three guitarists are present. That also explains why he didn't solo on this particular tune. Now, notice how after a quick conversation at the top Tomo leads the tune and proceeds to Q the arrangement. At this point you may be wondering why Kirk is there. My guess is his spot was before Tomo's and he was asked to stay on stage by Tomo and/or Josh. Why? For what happened in this tune that you're all misinterpreting. Tomo starts off Cissy Strut and takes a solo. Then, it is Tomo who nods to Kirk to step out and play. Notice how Kirk was thrown off guard. This was Tomo's tune and his tune to strut his stuff from top to bottom. As Kirk steps out notice how Tomo stays along side him. That's fine - it's Tomo's spot on the schedule. What Tomo does from there is trade licks with Kirk. That was his intention when he called him out. Does he do it from the onset? Not so much and that's where he may have thrown you all off. It did feel like he was going to comp behind Kirk at first and I bet he would agree his initial approach was cause for confusion. Personally, I can see where you all got the idea Tomo ran over Kirk. I'm telling you - he didn't. Tomo GRACIOUSLY invited him out to trade and trade they did. Notice after the trading it was Tomo who continued to direct the band until the end. That's because this was Tomo's spot on the schedule. It's how these performances go off at shows like this. Bottom line: This is not what you think. It's all good. Tomo did not step on Kirk's solo.
Great points Bro. Lots of unwritten rules of stage etiquette...but in a jam setting, the best ones I've seen or been involved in threw the "rules" out the window...🤘🏾
I didn't see that as 'soloing' all over the other guy's spot as much as he was complementing the other player by doing tiny bits of call-and-response and single note accompanyment. Also, based on the other guitarists facial expressions, he didn't seem to mind a bit.
Kirk is such a chill dude, I can't imagine he'd be too miffed if youo did step on his solo. As long as it doesn't become a habit!
@@OriginalOldSkoolFunk if you
If you have to explain what your listening to at a concert, you're not doing it right
what a great band, right in the pocket
Great job guys, a year later and it still is funky !!!
excellent sound mix.
Tomo is a beast so inventive
Awesome rendition... Great jam!
Great take on this classic. Bravo Cats. You all killed it.
Killer drums. Great job!
Very very very!
bass too. LOL
really nailed that NOLA groove!
he is listening to the guitars and matches his play - although it sounds to much at times it is NOT!
best i ever seen
Good lord this rocks, oh mY!
AWESOME!!!
one of the best live drum sounds I've heard...most techs DO NOT KNOW HOW TO MIC DRUMS PROPERLY (Live)
couldn't agree more my friend, best sounding live jam i have heard in a very long time . mad respect to the crew responsible for setting levels/mixing/mic placement, etc. crisp clear balanced like candy for my ears, wow.
Except for in the mix the drums are too loud
Agreed. And every instrument can be heard clearly.
DAMN IM SO STOKED I JUST FOUND THIS!!!!!!
saaaaaaame!!!
the 2 guitars soloing at the same time was a good shout imo.. listen to the conversation they're having.!
yeah kind of hard to make it sound that right ! brilliant exchange ;)
Tomo is da man
Wow, absolutely amazing dual solos by Tomo and Kirk! They had a great conversation was so fun to watch! How come Josh S. didn't get his turn?
Watching tomo play feels like finding out that your boring dad turned out to be good at 🎸
Lol at Tomo's Tequila quote
I'm with Chris Buono on this one...I think it's pretty clear what's going on here, and the fact that Kirk stepped in only made it more fun.
Kinda surprised all the diss Tomo's getting here...I thought he played fantastic.
HE DOESN'T DIG IN. He plays the notes and that's as far as it goes
@@royweissman5295 He just doesn't stick to one thing all the time is all, different styles man. Check out some other vids of his, he can apply any style well, like srv blues for example - with aggressive attack in his picking/ strumming. I think he just wants to stick to a clean sort of approach to funky/jazzy songs
What most of the bedroom you tube experts don’t understand is that you don’t be at your best every night.that’s the life as a musician. I thought he played very well and he is well above the level of many.
If I didn't see who was playing the drums, I would have sworn it was'Zigaboo Modeliste'. Who is the drummer? By far one of the best new funky drummers around (PERIOD).
That's Jaydon Bean
Petar is the best
fantastic craftsman at work
Damn!
Here's what happened. Kirk was thoroughly enjoying Tomo's playing and invited him to join in on his solo. They had fun. And we had fun.
fabulous!1 the drummer nailed it. I might be able to play w him
No hate to the pick-users and slappers in bassland, but this right here, just locking in and holding it down with them meat stubs, is what truly makes my bassist heart happy.
“Meat stubs,” LOL! Great comment.
Just discovered kirk Fletcher the other day. He's a great guitar player and a good soul.
💪👍👍
dang that snare could use a little more reverb
it sounds wet enough to me but maybe a little bit too much low end taken out it does sound kinda thin
@@maxindiveri8757 I think it's a joke...
This is what Dawn does to grease.
Tomo is Japanese, Kirk a black man, Josh a white man, all different spices for soup of sound they blessed us with...!
Tomo & Josh- nice!!!
give the organ some man!
What great restraint the keyboard player had to stay in the pocket and didn't get a solo
4:14 Bass
The Nutty Professor on guitar1
Dat backline tho. Enjoyed Tomo's playing. Kirk is a great player and human being. Ditto Smith.
Srsly guys (see comments) it's just a jam. Take chill pill.
3:15 onwards sounds like Wildfire by John Mayer ...
its called Mixolydian. Its a mode of the major scale that gives that kind of sound, Mayer and Tomo are playing in essentially the same scale (songs are in different keys but relatively they are the same intervalic structure). Its essentially major but your 7 note (normally a Major 7th in the major scale) is lowered a half step to a minor7th (also called a flat 7th or chordally speaking a dominant 7th) this not only gives it both a bluesy feel but also that mysterious - almost western sound. Now when the IV chord comes they often then switch to (in this case C) dorian from (also C) mixolydian as it is the same as F mixolydian (c dorian and f mixo have the same notes! - C is the I chord in the song - home base) the same rules apply for F mixo as C mixo, but using C dorian instead (harmonically the same!) allows our brain to look at essentially the same scale! - the only difference from c mixo is that C dorian/F mixo has an Eb instead of an E natural, this makes it the minor sound you hear in pentatonic blues scales!
Josh should have been playing the melody with Tomo
This is more like the jazz fusion version of 'Cissy' reminds me of the Crusaders or even a Steely Dan vibe not the 'real deal' but a great rendition nonetheless play on TOMO!
A little disappointed they didn't zoom in on the drummer and bass player more.
No Josh?
Sid from Toy Story on the drums everyone!
2:37
I'm going to tell my kids this is Eric Clapton
He can't help himself he's a kid.
Lol.
Why even have Josh up there if not give him a solo. Let the dudes play. These are the best in the world. Needs to be more diplomacy for all the players.
josh is so much more pleasing to the ear
He often just sings.....because...if he plays everyone else looks like amateurs
actually Bassist is the best player..
he is a monster player!!
That's Nick Campbell. He's awesome.
wicked drumming as this pairs against the original.
Too much Cissy, not enough strut in this one tomo
If that drummer were any deeper in the pocket, he'd be lint.
327 shot of tequila....
The Asian needs to take a walk.
Fletcher just handed tomo his ass LOL
headphones and no visual,do Tomo justice..just that the bunny hops and robotic sweepz make his playing look weak..but hes good lol
don G asians.....such weird ppl
@@joshmuz9018 R u ok??
Sean SYW forget me, is Annie ok? Ive seen some smooth criminals around the woods lately
tomo can play, but I just love Josh and Kirk. they seem to play from the soul and more for the feel of the music. and Tomo seem to play for competition.... it kinda take me out of the feeling of the music when Tomo comes in. but don't get me wrong he has crazy technical skill.
Never liked him. He has no soul, feel, tone. Not saying I'm better than him, but this i s my opinion.
WTF you guys are talking about? Tomo Fujita is GREAT!
+Valerio Di Matteo how does he not have soul lmao, he's fucking jumping in his solo are you crazy
Tomo can really play, but sometimes less is more.
4:10 Jean-Pierre》 Lick
Everybody plays that second part wrong.
OMG! Why from the start 'Add' the 'extra notes' to a simple but perfectly 'workin' CLASSIC RIFF??? Playin' with it and Jammin' along the solo parts in the song, that ofcourse is what jamming is all about. Maybe it's Me,but i always stick to: When touching True Classics.. Treat 'em with Respect,or leave 'em alone.. ;)
Não gostei que o Tomo tomou a vez kirk Fletcher se intrometendo na performance dele.
why is Tomo taking an endless solo, then when Kirk comes up Tomo plays all over him?
It's called jamming bro. They were clearly trading licks. Not an uncommon thing. If you look at Kirk's face he was obviously enjoying the exchange. Lighten up man. Music isn't competition
Kirk played it off and was forced to trade licks since Tomo would not let him have breath. I'm guessing it was Tomo's set and that's how you control your guests.
By the way, music is also competitive and has solo battles.
Maann. That jackie chan dude are awesome
bro its 2020
Jacky Chan on lead guitar...! Great cover by the way...!
This is why I like Jakie Chan!
Tomo needs to smoke some weed or something. He got the tone of a typewriter
Lol
Zebulon B he’s definitely a more “relaxed” player, certainly in terms of tone, but man can he command that clean tone!
hahahahhahahah
One of Tomo's big things is that you should practice with a very clean tone so it puts all the focus on your picking/dynamics and puts any deficiencies thereof in the spotlight. He's really not wrong about that but the problem it seems is that he has a harder time beefing up his sound in live contexts because he's so used to practicing that way. I love the guy, but he did seem to trample on the others' solos. I'm a bit surprised by that. Josh did give Tomo a shout out at the end so it might've intentionally been a showcase specifically for Tomo. It's hard to say without knowing what their actual game plan was.
Everyone saw the same thing! Tomo needs to stop purposefully distracting the other guitar player. What a Ham!
If you talking shit on tomo playing over Kirk you obviously dont know how jam etiquette works
tomo ....dont get it....
wtf, Tomo Fujita plays great but let the other guy do solo on his own :-(
TheWhaddeva It seemed almost like he got insecure about how much more smooth and flowing it was than his, and started stepping on him to reassert himself.
Agreed. Easy to see why he sure wasn't going to give Josh a break after that.
The show was tommy fujita not josh
Fufita can you let someone else play a little?
Bass player, my man needs too groove from one bassist too another loosen up dem joints.
The only interesting thing there is the drummer and the bass man.
I just can´t stand listening to Tomo...
would much rather hear Josh smith - Im with you
Tomo needs to do some drugs or something. Dude's too robotic.
The mixing of this is horrible. Drums too loud, dude on Les Paul too loud. Dude on the Telecaster decided to give up with good reason.
That dude is Josh Smith. He'll rip your ears off. Check him out live. He is a beast.
Tomo was annoying on this one. He cluttered it up and made it feel awkward.
guitarist does not understand Cissy strut, plays to many notes, rythm is wrong
No
@@grinne2975 No?
Tomo is a great player, but just boring because it's too perfect. There are no dynamics in his playing. Instead of really bringing it to a climax, it just goes on and on.
Disappointed actually, *MESSY*
The drummer needs to listen to and practice the meters beat,he is sorely lacking.
Hate when other guitar players (the ASIAN DUDE) sooooo inconsiderate UN-professional and paly over other peoples solos (UN-COOL dude) especially Kirkie...Eli ...the great irk Fletcher!!
Drummer is great, but way too heavy at some points. Specifically, whenever Tomo played soft the drummers' dynamics did not match Mr. Fujita's
Tomo should stick to teaching. Doesnt belong on stage with Josh, or the band. To play for so long and still be that wooden and stiff is just strange.
This is just noise.
Tomo is so selfish. Like let the others play, dude. Your solo was good the first 4 mins, smh
It was his song
I always hated this song........just sayin.
Who asked?
Mr Fujita dont swing...terrible
