It sounds like you're one of us "Funkateers" who totally understand where the FUNK came from. THE METERS surpasses JAMES BROWN and THE JB'S in a different way. JAMES BROWN laid the bricks but THE METERS originated the all-familiar pattern of FUNK!!! The "JOSIE" years from the number one FUNK group ever are regarded in my book as the pinnacle of funk!
I´d say that Mr Brown defined the genre - he is the kitchenfloor. The Meters added more ingredients, threw some other ingredients out and where really good - but we have to mention Mr Brown. What he did to soul & funk is again simply the kitchenfloor.
I love the Meters and dig Dr. John as well so seeing him was a plus. I forever called him Mac rebonak(sp?) because he was introduced by his full name during the Last Waltz. Later on I got hip to Nola funk by looking for him and discovered these guys in the process. I still keep both on constant rotation in my playlist.
Dr. John is some character that got some of the meters magic included in two of his albums, need i tell you that these were some baaaad FUNKY outings? Give me more live footage from the best and funkiest band ever, when they were in their prime!!!! Edit: GEORGE PORTER JR and JOSEPH "ZIGABOO" MODELISTE was and still is the unquestionable rhythm duo EVER!
Even if instructed to do so for the TV production, how in the Hell could people sit for this? That place should looked like a motherfunkin' Soul Train studio.

@@GUITARTIME2024 That's exactly what I thought, until I got to searching online and discovered that this was taped in Chicago. I saw a few heads bop while the camera went from left to right facing the band.
Yep, definitely great. Another good one is the intro to The Clash's 1982 Kingston, Jamaica performance. It's a good one, given the situation at hand. Look it up.
@@doorag_nationwide Maybe so. I don't think I realized at the time I made the comment that that was the legendary Dr. John, which just makes it that much better. However, it's fair to say that he remained weird in the best way possible, on drugs or not, throughout his life.

Yes.. at least in terms of how far and wide he influenced drummers. I've heard punk drummers say he's their fav.. I've heard Ringo say he can't come close, I have heard Purdie.. say nothing about him LOL.. (purdie loves his own image haha) .. Steve Gadd loves him. And since like 1955 or something rediculous like that Zig helped create the dance beat of the last 60 years. Next to James Browns drummers.. most sampled. Correct is subjective. Every drum teacher has a different outlook and influence. One wants to be Buddy Rich the other wants to be Geddy Lee. It should be about the personality.
Wow! I've loved this band for most of my adult life - I'm 61. Never thought to look for video until now. This is the shit... The real NO funk from the best band ever to do it. My favorite drummer ever, sounding just like the early records as opposed to the WB stuff where they kinda ruined his drum sound with the production trends of the time (deadened snare mostly). Music gets no better than this.
I'm sorry to tell you, this is what we "METERS" have to cope with, there are no other live performances (prove me wrong) from this legendary and mostly seminar group ever. I have searched my whole life for anything regarding "Live" and "1969-1970" and came up with...🤷
Bourbon and weed I'm sure, since they played music in the '70s, but not enough to make it sloppy. Nothing against drugs, I just think "good show " and leave it

Especially the tracks he played on with "the man" around 70´ are next to rhythm perfection and almost not human, he was the relentless "machinery" (too much for JAMES to cope with) at the time for JAMES BROWN and his universe of super bad FUNK! But, there's always a but right? GEORGE PORTER JR. and "ZIGABOO": the rhythm undisputed gods, played in a whole different league! They are soo synched, tight and they interlock each other on the verge to become one essence! I have never to this day heard anything like THE METERS, my time spending listening to rhythm-based music must be counted in decades rather than hours and years, so I have a pretty solid foundation to back up what I love! Sorry, almost slipped my mind. Never forget the accent to the rhythm (the other way around than all other genres) LEO and ART provided, without them, THE METERS wouldn't have to be! My two cents anyway :)
i'll have to check that out.... but yea you right! cannot beat the rhythm section of George and Zig. They are the undeniable GOATS! long live the funk baby
God bless whoever had the task of captioning whatever he said in whatever language that is
That's pure organic analog funk right there, brothers and sisters.
George Porter Jr is still laying down the groove at the Maple Leaf bar Monday Nights. They have a great stream.
This is some of the best music EVER!
Saw them at Tipitina’s many times. Was aware we were in the presence of greatness.
These guys were simply one of the greatest bands ever and they difined a genre. How many bands can say that?
Well put, this is a band that is sooo underappreciated. For us who know our way around rhythm already got it, but the mainstream will never get this!

Vorgruppe der Rolling Stones in Bremen Mai 1976! War ein Super Concert damals! Als junger 19 jähriger Hering, heute 60J.
Whenever and wherever the Meters were performing in New Orleans we made sure we got tickets early before they were all bought.
Sound of my youth in the 70s. Funk like that you could only hear in Germany in small clubs, no 24/7 Hits on airplay.
R.I.P Art Neville Legendary!
listening to this on google play music. The recordings are so clean it sounds recent. What a band.

It is such a pity there aint so much video recordings of the Meters.

it's not wrong, he's just shifting levels of straightness/swing, which is what the music intended.
