I discovered Alisha in 1991 when I found the Bounce Back cassette on sale for $1.00 in a remaindered Evrerything's a Dollar store. The proprietor said the cassette had not sold as many as they had hoped and he had bought a bunch of them. I bought it and was AMAZED at the professionalism of it, the incredible phrasing and vocal range (!) of Alisha and the incredible arrangements by Michael Jay. I was especially stunned by her readings of the ballad numbers on the cassette such as You've Really Gotten to Me and I totally love Kiss Me Quick, Wrong Number (crazy lyrics too) and of course the classic Bounce Back. 31 years later I am still playing this and had to buy a cassette player to do so. Alisha, you should have been one of the greatest superstars of your age and Lord only knows why you aren't treated as the brilliant song interpreter you have been by the entire world, but the huge numbers of fans you have writing in this group of comments here should tell you that the quality was totally there. I am now in 2022 a 75 year old university regents professor at U of Arizona and I was never a member of the dance music scene or disco singing but you are one of THE greatest American singers and song interpreters I have ever heard, period. Anybody who listens to the incredible amount of tightness and sheer hard work, the incredible guitar parts and arrangements surrounding your voice knows that Michael Jay saw that quality too and invested a good bit of his soul into that music. And the good news is that the music still exists and will so long as great quality is appreciated. You've really created hours upon hours of enjoyment for me!!
We lived for Alisha. She turned out some burners. We danced ourselves crazy. But we always knew her songs, the hits always sounded like answer songs to songs that had already been hits. She needed better writers & producers. I always wanted so much more for her. I'm glad she's happy. ..and Alisha..YOU are definitely a SOMEBODY in my life & memories of growing up with my friends. Thank you.
@@bluedasher74 A lot of people for some reason don't know that Alisha sang "Do you Dream About Me" in the 80's movie Mannequin and that scene in the movie is a lot people's favorite part of the movie.
This was really great to watch. Thank you filmmakers. Thank you Alisha for all the great music. I was a DJ in the 80s when All Night Passion, Too Turned On, and Baby Talk came out. Those songs alone, made so many club goers very happy,
Happy to see this little documentary! As someone who listened to 98.7 Kiss FM, 92 KTU, and BLS--and was a DJ at the time--I really liked these records when they were released! "All Night Passion" and "Too Turned On" were my favorites!
I was born in 1984 and so I didn’t discover Alisha until early 2000s (shoutout to Tommy Boy’s iconiC Perfect Beats compilations, changed my life). Always loved “All Night Passion” the best. I’ve long wished I could have lived in NYC in the early 80s and gone clubbing at Funhouse and Danceteria and I would picture a wild night out on the bodyrock party scene when I listen to this song. Thank you for creating this awesome video and providing a fascinating biography of this seminal electro underground star. And thank you Alisha for the wonderful JAMS!!
Great mini-doc! Alisha released many great dance tracks in the #80s (All Night Passion, Baby Talk, Too Turned On, etc.) - cool freestyle-electro-club sound!
She sounded nothing like Madonna. You might think this way because they had the same producer Shep Pettibone. He produced Madonna's "In To The Groove", and Alisha's "Baby Talk" which are almost identical in sound. But that's as close as they sound alike.
Madonna says Alisha copied her sound but Alisha was a real NYer unlike Madonna. I saw them both in clubs in the 80s and no one ever booed Alisha out of the club. I was there when Madonna was booed off the stage, for not singing live. When Alisha sang there were long lines to get in. Maybe because she actually sang ..live. If anything Madonna copied the NY street sound and street look. Edit: omg I forgot my friend Freddie danced in The Bounce Back video. He was a Club Mtv dancer at the time.
It was really just one song "Baby Talk" that sounded somewhat a similar style , the rest of her music wasn't like Madonna. I think that sounds like Madonna being competitive.
First time I heard All night passion, I was hooked! We love you Alisha thanks for the music, you and the production team. I play your music all the time here in China.
Alisha appeared at a club I DJ'd at in Seaside Heights, NJ called Changes back in 1986. Of all the singers we ever had there she always drew the biggest crowds. She was so nice as was her father who would be in the booth with me. I like all her songs and use them all, but my favorite is Baby Talk.
I think it was still hot 103 back then. Do ou remember Debbie Gibsons Only in my Dreams would start ,"Hot 103, only in my dreams"? Lol. I woke up wanting to hear Too Turned On while making coffee and found this precious interview. Alicia's voice is stunning. I had her 1st tape with that brass bed! Clubs were all about dancing with all that freestyle back then 💞
Alisha, Thank you for all the great music. I remember hearing All Night Passion and Baby Talk on the radio, 92 WKTU and 90.9 WKRB when I was living in Brooklyn as a kid. I went out right away and bought all the 12 inch singles as they came out, and album. Still have them in my huge collection. I also have the baby Talk 45 rpm in my jukebox. back then in my early teens, I used to go up to Kingsborough Community College on Saturday nights and help at WKRB radio. I used to answer phones and sometimes go on the air with the dj. My first time on the air, the dj had Baby Talk cart tape ready and I introduced it on the air. I was 14 years old and fell in love with the song. I'm still crazy about it today as the dj that I am and always play it as much as possible during a gig or on my pirate radio FM station. Where I live now in Wisconsin, they have no idea of this music and I get phone calls asking who that song is sung by and I tell them. They're blown away that it's from 1985. Great music never dies! Thank you for all the memories.
Love Alisha for ever! I played all her hits when she came out and she always packed the floor! She performed in San Jose at a DISCO and I was right up front singing all the words with her and she came noticed that I knew all the words and she came up to me and grabbed my hand for a brief second. I was the only one she approached and I Love her for that. Such a great memory!! Thank you Alisha for all your music!
I saw Alisha perform live at a number of clubs here in NY back in the 1980's. The set would consist of one or two songs usually late but she was a great performer. It was for sure a different time in history and she contributed some of the great songs of the decade which put her in the Freestyle Music Category. It's great to see her doing well.
I saw her at a free concert once here on Long Island. It's so funny, she's like SOOOO chill and relaxed, and doesn't come across like a performer at all. Omg those eyes too!! She seems so nice and I wonder how cool it must be for her daughters. Thanks for the fun music!! :)

Great interview. You're so down to earth. I have so much respect. I saw you perform a Jenkinson's in Pt. Pleasant, NJ. You were in your teens then. You sang with recorded music to all your hits from your first album. You were really good.

So humble, chill and charming. What a wonderful lady. And what terrific songs she has given us, with that impassioned voice. "Too Turned On" is one of the greatest dance songs ever--so slinky and dramatic. It completely captures the frisson of falling for someone and being consumed by lust and longing! It is a classic and sounds as fresh today as it did 35+ years ago. Thank you so much, Alisha, for all the treasures you have given us!
Glad Alisha is still around. Thanks for sharing your story and music. Enjoyed "All Night Passion" music video filmed at NYC's legendary "The Saint" nightclub in East Village, move it girl. Go Alisha from UWS and Hudson Valley.

I am always in love with the song "Stargazing", since i discovered that it was her who sang this when i was a child, i have always loved this song, i was sad that it didn't chart in France.
I remember Alisha very well. Boston radio station Kiss 108 and Magic 106 always played her songs. I remember 3 cds from her. The last one I remember was on MCA records Bounce Back. The Bounce Back cd was real good. Some singers really never get their props just like Teena Marie both ladies should have been major stars. Wish you nothing but the best. Alisha.
