Agreed. I don't think I've ever seen this much of a patronizing and condescending tone from any other celebrity interviewer. No wonder Madonna stayed away from TV interviews for many more years after having to sit through this one.
It’s not weird it’s just an 80s interview. People didn’t interview the way they do today. They weren’t trying to kiss ass or create a viral moment or sell you some social media bullshit back then. Barbara Walters did the same style of interviewing.
Aurora-Rose The Interview is not weird. Jayne Pauley is cognitive that she is in the presence of someone special and she recovers well after goofing a couple of times.
In 1987, I was 13 and thought the 50's were so long ago and so different. Now, it's more than 30 years after this interview and the late 80's don't seem that long ago in my mind, but times are definitely different.
Wow. Lost some respect for Jane Pauley after seeing this. Seems like every single question she's trying to trip up or attack Madonna in the most catty, conniving ways. Very impressed with a 28-year old Madonna, proving that she's more poised and clever than an older, supposedly savvier Pauley.
Nice?! Classy?! What interview were you watching? For the first ten or fifteen minutes Jane acts "nice" but only in a very transparent attempt to get Madonna to warm to her. Then she starts laying out a series of traps for Madonna and becomes increasingly frustrated as the interview progresses with the realization that Madonna is not falling for any of it. Towards the end of the interview Jane is at times rude, desperate, irrational and even slightly delusional. She almost appears mentally unwell. It's actually quite uncomfortable to watch Jane's maneuvers and tactics throughout this interview. She grossly misjudged Madonna by thinking she would be an easy person to manipulate. Madonna is uncharacteristically patient to calmly sit through such a ridiculous series of questions, backhanded comments and thinly veiled accusations. But she outsmarts Jane at every step, and really Madonna is the only thing that makes this interview worth watching. I have to laugh when Jane says "well, you're lucky!" towards the end, sounding defeated and barely even attempting to contain her jealousy and envy. It's like a scene straight out of Dynasty! lol. Only in the 80's!!
Thank you for saying what I am thinking. Pauley has a strange demeanor throughout this "interview". She is constantly degrading Madonna and those obvious aggressive and dismissive comments were to try to get a negative reaction and somehow hurt Madonna. Now fast forward to today Madonna's networth is almost a billion dollars and Pauley is at 40 million networth. Madonna is far more successful and loved and Pauley is still jealous of that.
@@aavalestormiconicperformer Jane Pauley is "still jealous" ? Somehow you know that ? ridiculous. and certainly wrong. And all human "success" is based on net worth ? 40 million (as you say) is doing extremely well in my opinion.
Madonna wipes the floor with Jane here & that's why this is my favourite interview of her. And I always LOVED her hair this way. She's the only one that can pull this look off outside of Sharon Stone.
It’s not a competition. The job of the interviewer is to ask all kinds of questions. They’re not going to talk about global affairs at this point in madonna’s career. J Pauly was doing tough interviews with world politicians and had to challenge them on questions of war and diplomatic rows. This was a change of pace. Madonna was still finding herself as an artist and woman at this point,
Brilliant interview.. as alot of people have mentioned. The interviewer was asking some really stupid questions and seemed baffled by Madonnas interesting and clever answers! Go Madonna! Long live the queen 👑💪👑
For some moronic reason, the lay person tend to think that artists lack educated intelligence which is completely ridiculous because artist literally study, interpret and reflect the world around them and usually have a deeper grasp and insight of what’s taking place more than most.
Madonna is absolutely brilliant. Her calm, intelligent, elegant demeanor screams QUEEN . She is the best. The interviewer is acting very crude, asking stupid questions and being so passive aggressive and rude however MADONNA put her right in her place where she belongs very beneath her. I am always in ahhhhh of MADONNA , she is and always will be the one and only…. ♥️
I felt a bit sorry for Madonna here. Being the highly intelligent, creative and articulate woman she is, it must have been tough to sit through 45 minutes of being interviewed by a total airhead who asking totally inane questions! However she handles herself with composure and class throughout, and gave smart answers to some very silly questions without ever talking down to her.
Jane Pauley act like one of the sales girls in the movie "pritty woman" , the one who never wanted to service julia roberts ,and even sound very condescending just like her..she seems so frustrated from not getting any "yellow " frome madonna who was brilliantall true the interview . "BIG MISTAKE , HUGE.." lol ..
She’s still like that. I’m sure Jane is a nice person, but I can’t bear to watch CBS Sunday morning since she took over. The intonations and the way she dips her voice and the fake sincerity drive me nuts. I watch all of the clips on YT instead.
From time to time I come back and watch this interview again. I have watched this interview again and again since I was 9 years old. The joy it brings to be a Madonna Stan is indescribable. Knowing what she has done after 1987, what she has achieved, what albums, tour, the men she dated... Evita- a Golden Globe, Sex and Erotica, endless athleticism and ambition Guy Ritchie Ray Of Light Grammy Kissing Britney and Christina 51 Number one dance singles more than 300 million records sold! "How could I dream all this?"
I didn't realize Jane Pauley had such weak interview skills. I wonder how she was so famous in the 80's. Her follow-up questions are simply embarrassing.
Matthew Jacks Insulted them... with complete truth. And she didn’t even refer to Mariah Carey specifically, she was asked if she would like to “be an artist like Mariah Carey and not push any buttons”.
But, as all Madonna nerds know, she DID wear this actual dress a few years earlier. She was photographed in it for a Rolling Stone/Desperately Seeking Susan promotional shoot by Herb Ritts.
I like how she kept her composure all the way through; she was confident, didn't panic, & left room for mystery without giving everything away to her bitchy interviewer...
I think the interviewer was very confused, because she probably thought herself: "I will interview a banal brainless pop singer, I will just talk about dresses and hair cuts". She didn't expect that Madonna was super smart and would talk about deep and serious issues. Maybe that's why the interviewer seemed akward and confused.
It is so hard to find interviews with Madonna where the topic revolves around her music, they so seldom focus on the music. They mostly ramble on about fashion and romantic life and whatever.....hardly ever about the MUSIC. I remember a Rolling Stone article once that was about 7 or 8 pages long, and not once in the article does it EVER mention that she is a recording artist, no discussion about her music.....not one word about it. One of the biggest music stars ever, and it was never talked about in a rather long story, just lots of discussion about whom she had dated, or her ever changing fashion style, or politico leanings. If you did not know anything at all about Madonna, the article would not let you know anything about her being a huge pop star.
Wow good comment! Madonna is all about the Music! You wouldn't get that from thus shamble if an interview. I'd wanna punch this interveuwer for being so ignorant and just nosey and trying to dig dirt.. ( I know that what they do) But yeah what about the Music.. I love Madonna's honesty alway 1 step ahead X Glad I see this x
qantasCapt This was riveting to see... Madge was so superior and intelligent that she seemed to somehow enjoy this interview. Not in the last bit self conscious. She humored Jane Pauley while letting her make an ass of herself. Thanks for posting this!
qantasCapt I have to say, Jane got a lot of good answers and pushed the envelope as far as she could without getting eaten alive. What an unlikable and insulting twat.
Madonna's career from 1986 to 1987 was my personal favorite. The music she came out with at the time was her best and her look was the best. I still listen to her True Blue album and occasionally will watch the movie she starred in Who's That Girl. Brings back great childhood memories.
Jane Pauley' idiotic questions and comments ruined this chance to show Madonna's talent when she was willing to be open and her art was so raw. Pauley is too caught up in her own ego, and bland whiteness, -- she has no understanding of Madonna's art, which helped only helped hip hop.
Living legend. The foundation she laid back then is the strong pilar she is today. Just EPIC interview. Don't take nothing she has done for granted. There will never ever be a star like this ever ever again. Not to mention the fact that she became a billionaire in this era. Impossible. Just wow thinking what she was and how truth she remained to herself. Best interview of her ever.
Soft spoken , an early in depth Madonna interview. I remember this airing and have it on VHS. I saw her WHO'S THAT GIRL TOUR 2 times and was in Times Square for the premiere of WHO'S THAT GIRL. 1987 was a fun fillled year.
I looked how long this interview took. Wow Madonna was extremely patient with this uptight interviewer. I would of lost it after 15mins, lol. Another strength Madonna has. She rocks! 💪
That dress is actually a common one that she wore. When Jane said “This is something you wouldn’t have wore a couple years ago” When in fact she did wear it a couple years earlier in a magazine with Rosanna Arquette promoting Desperately Seeking Susan 😇
This woman was never bought or sold by anybody. She didn't have a connection at all, and made it all on her own merit. If the phone doesn't ring, Madonna just made work for herself. That's the lesson to be taken from her career.
You gotta give her credit... She has made millions and lasted decades not off of amazing talent, but simply off of being Madonna. People go crazy for her. That's her art.
She did not become an icon for just being Madonna, her live shows are amazing and she is a strong artist, musician, producer and dancer who puts 100 percent quality in everything she produces. She is authentic and not a fake studio production.
I never knew she'd been a vegetarian since she was 15. And she avoids dairy products. Wow. No wonder she's maintained her figure so well, that her dancing and exercise. Wow. Good to know. The interviewer was kind of relentless and annoying with her follow up questions. She just kept digging and digging. Wouldn't just settle for the answer Madonna was giving.
watching interviews like this shows how artists like Madonna and others paved the ways for everyone else. They kept being asked about things everyone takes for granted today when it comes to artists, like, for example, changing looks!
Madonna, is still out there nearly 40 yrs later. She works hard & is her own person. I'm glad I saw her in concert a few years ago, she was electric ⭐️🎶⭐️🎶⭐️🎶⭐️
I love how no matter how bitchy the interviewers are or how personal, Madonna keeps her cool. I don't think i would have lasted 5 minutes. Effing hell- she is BRILLIANT! WHAT a woman! WHAT a professional!!!!
Funny to watch this - I mean, I remember this era as a kid, but it seems so...naive now. Jane Pauley's fawning interview style is like an SNL skit. And Madonna - you see that her real asset is the fact that she's in love with herself. She's so self-consciously vamping it up and feeling the camera love her, etc, rolling her eyes and flirting - she loves the feeling of projecting her image out through the lens to her adoring fans. That's what makes her a star. That and all the work she's willing to do to get to that place and stay there. But all that said, those fucking eyebrows...Groucho Marx called.
She is the biggest and brightest Star ever. Her track record , her music , her live performances. She was and is confident, driven, Extremely intelligent and suffers no fools.
This was funny. Jane looks nervous more so than Madonna but was also genuinely fascinated and mystified at this sort of alien beauty sitting before her. Everything she asked her came from a genuine inquiring place though how awkward and stupid it may appear because at this point in her career we were all in awe of Madonna and this interview represents that fascination.
Thanks for providing context. I don't know Jane Pauley at all. She was actually great when she was told something was none of her business she acknowledged and moved on without being weird.
Why, allegedly, would the discerning public that do not idol worship, ever believe an obnoxious lying, narcissistic, mediocre talented, helliweird, satanick masonick, entertainment industry created, wombless gender inverted male, controlled opposition shill, deceiver sellout, ACTOR, Man donner, who has, for decades, been deliberately mocking, gaslighting, misleading and distracting the good public by masquerading as a female entertainer , ACTOR, and more laughably, as a mother claiming to have given natural child birth, while parading around with a strap-on prosthetic, pregnancy, moon belly bump, trannyesque makeup and heels and utilizing paid helliweird breeder surrogates, allegedly?
This interviewer is the worst. Madonna handled herself like a champ tho. I would have wanted to excuse myself or tell her to piss off. Seriously, this Jane Pauley person must have been known as a "good interviewer" back then. I mean, I assume she must have been regarded as one of the better interviewers back then which is crazy!. Imagine what a crappy interviewer was in the 80's if this woman was reputable. All that aside, I love this interview from a historic perspective because some people don't realize what a huge cultural impact Madonna made from the very start of her career. She was was the originator of so many trends, not just in music but in fashion, social advocacy, art, - the list goes on and on. It's crazy how influential and how innovative she is. I think Madonna is one of the few musicians I have never lost interest in or got bored of. She's not gimmicky, never redundant, and always original. Love her! Thanks for posting!
There is one and only one Madonna..... This is why she is the biggest selling female artist in history!!! Not to mention the biggest female touring artist ever, the only artist with the most top 10 hits ever, male or female.... I can go on and on, but you all get the point....

Losing her mother at that age definitely marked her and shaped her, l have a daughter that age and we are very close, she plays dress up and she copies my make up, it would definitely leave a huge void if l was gone suddenly. These old interviews that we didn't see over here in Ireland give great insight into Madonnas personality and she always talked about her mother, even her perfume was inspired by how her mother used to smell (which l loved, but it got discontinued after a few short years 😒).
Agreed. I don't think I've ever seen this much of a patronizing and condescending tone from any other celebrity interviewer. No wonder Madonna stayed away from TV interviews for many more years after having to sit through this one.
I remember Madonna's publicist Liz Rosenberg later said it was a mistake for her to put them together as many sensed the mutual cold icy disconnect.
She's gorgeous, sassy & inspiring. I adore Madonna.
this interview is weird. like Madonna is at therapy or something. Weird introspection going on from the interviewer
this is called entertaining interview...im crying with madonna's jokes lmaoa
It’s not weird it’s just an 80s interview. People didn’t interview the way they do today. They weren’t trying to kiss ass or create a viral moment or sell you some social media bullshit back then. Barbara Walters did the same style of interviewing.
J Texas Yeah it's very 80s but even back then most think this style of interviewing was weird and annoying.
Aurora-Rose The Interview is not weird. Jayne Pauley is cognitive that she is in the presence of someone special and she recovers well after goofing a couple of times.
Whitfield Palmer I agree with you! Talking about real stuff not all about gossip. and no social media back then
i love how she says she isnt afraid of her future ...then we are here today and she is still selling tickets and records
Richard Connolly Damn right yeah! 👍🏽
And breaking records, mostly her own
Well now she fucked her face up and dates people half her age she's worried trust me
In 1987, I was 13 and thought the 50's were so long ago and so different. Now, it's more than 30 years after this interview and the late 80's don't seem that long ago in my mind, but times are definitely different.
That lady was so jealous of Madonna and Madonna knew it too. That's why she was so patient.
That's right. You can see how angry Pauley is and those stupid questions are laughable.
I think youre delusional and seeing things that aren't there. get help.
the interviewer was dripping in judgement... Madonna did amazing to keep her cool and answer so calmly and intelligently
Wow. Lost some respect for Jane Pauley after seeing this. Seems like every single question she's trying to trip up or attack Madonna in the most catty, conniving ways. Very impressed with a 28-year old Madonna, proving that she's more poised and clever than an older, supposedly savvier Pauley.
+Colin Cahill I don't know where you got that. Pauley was pretty nice here, certainly classier than most journalists today. Think about it.
Nice?!
Yeah she was annoying
Interviewer: I appreciate you taking the time with us.
Madonna : Ok.
Interviewer: Take care of yourself.
Madonna : Ok.
Madonna wipes the floor with Jane here & that's why this is my favourite interview of her. And I always LOVED her hair this way. She's the only one that can pull this look off outside of Sharon Stone.
And Marilyn Monroe.
and my mom from New Jersey 😂
It’s not a competition. The job of the interviewer is to ask all kinds of questions. They’re not going to talk about global affairs at this point in madonna’s career. J Pauly was doing tough interviews with world politicians and had to challenge them on questions of war and diplomatic rows. This was a change of pace. Madonna was still finding herself as an artist and woman at this point,
Jane Pauley tried to shade her all the way and overanalize her, yet Madonna was really brilliant.
I read that Madonna's IQ is 140.
She certainly showed her great intelligence in this interview.
madonna is just super intelligent.
Definitely...Jane Pauley is just a horrible interviewer...
Jane seems like she's about to have a nervous breakdown.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
She's intimidated, because she didn't realize how smart and intelligent this young, Italian, is from Michigan. Her bad.
Ridiculous.
It's so easy (and satisfying) to spout crap in the comments section, isn't it.
@@chrissimpson6701 um, no, Jane is not "intimidated."
What's bad here is your grammar -- look at it.
Madonna articulates herself extremely well.
I wish I was like her...
You can be like her. Believe in yourself, please. @@dixienormous6969
Legend 💯
I can't believe some of these questions. What are you protecting? Is the money important? Where is your money?
This woman calls Madonna soooo provocative, but she herself is extremely provocative and challenging on a mental level.
Agree she is so manipulative
Jane Pauley sounds jealous!
She's amazing. She's intelligent. She's beautiful.
I never realized how condescending Jane was in this interview, infatuated ego
She’s still like that. I’m sure Jane is a nice person, but I can’t bear to watch CBS Sunday morning since she took over. The intonations and the way she dips her voice and the fake sincerity drive me nuts. I watch all of the clips on YT instead.
Arikm7 LOL! hillarius comparison.
This is an extremely awkward interview,I mean for the interviewer.Madonna must be thinking:"What the hell am I dong here with this bitch?!"
25 years later and she has the biggest tour of the year! Amazing!
35 years later and the same!
40 years later the same 😊😊 now is 2023
Madonna soooo owned this interview. Brilliantly done.
From time to time I come back and watch this interview again.
I have watched this interview again and again since I was 9 years old.
The joy it brings to be a Madonna Stan is indescribable.
Knowing what she has done after 1987,
what she has achieved,
what albums, tour,
the men she dated...
Evita- a Golden Globe,
Sex and Erotica,

more than 300 million records sold!
"How could I dream all this?"
I didn't realize Jane Pauley had such weak interview skills. I wonder how she was so famous in the 80's. Her follow-up questions are simply embarrassing.
This woman didn't believe in Madonna. Madonna does not insult other artists, shes a superstar. ❤
Matthew Jacks Insulted them... with complete truth. And she didn’t even refer to Mariah Carey specifically, she was asked if she would like to “be an artist like Mariah Carey and not push any buttons”.
Matthew Jacks I literally gave you the exact quote. You can look up the interview and all the press clips about it if you would like.
But, as all Madonna nerds know, she DID wear this actual dress a few years earlier. She was photographed in it for a Rolling Stone/Desperately Seeking Susan promotional shoot by Herb Ritts.
Madonna was unbothered & then some 😂
She elevated these juvenile questions with humorous (insightful) answers!!!
Obvious gender inverted Dude alert

Jane Pauley acts like Madonna crawled out from under some rock somewhere in Michigan..
lol true. she seems so condescending and judgmental of her

Madonna is so Madonna in this interview. She cracks me up.
This is the most awkward interview ever. Madonna killed it
You've never watched the late Michael Parkinson interviewing Helen Mirren.
Many stupid or pointless questions LOL
Jane Pauley wasted this opportunity for what could have been a great interview - instead of it being a giant waste of time with her inane questions.
qantasCapt This was riveting to see...

Well Madonna blinked here in every 2 secs
Well, Madonna has never become a billionaire, she’s somewhat close though. But, not during the time of this Interview.
This is the madonna I loved
Can't stand the interviewer!
I KNOW!! horrifying how much time she spends on only Madonna's look, jesus.
Oh my god, it is like a six year old interviewing her.
Julie Collins The interviewer is a bitter jealous cunt!!!
really??
Madonna looks like a vain superficial twit, here.
Julie Collins.. the interviewer is just jealous of Madonna
Soft spoken , an early in depth Madonna interview. I remember this airing and have it on VHS. I saw her WHO'S THAT GIRL TOUR 2 times and was in Times Square for the premiere of WHO'S THAT GIRL. 1987 was a fun fillled year.
Shes pure Alpha female. I love her aways for her strength and motivation ❤
Madonna IS BEAUTIFUL with a WONDERFUL FACE and a truly Legend! Imcomparable!
I looked how long this interview took. Wow Madonna was extremely patient with this uptight interviewer. I would of lost it after 15mins, lol. Another strength Madonna has. She rocks! 💪
I like how Jane found the cover of true blue provocative. Oh boy she’s was not ready for what was next .....
Jane is dressed all frumpy and Madonna looks great in a second hand store dress. I remember this interview. Love her in short hair.
That dress is actually a common one that she wore. When Jane said “This is something you wouldn’t have wore a couple years ago” When in fact she did wear it a couple years earlier in a magazine with Rosanna Arquette promoting Desperately Seeking Susan 😇
So true ! You're right. That picture with Rosanna was on Smash Hits, I remember it.
That's her art.
allthatjazzspaz95 Yeah, enough of this shit. She is an incredible writer and producer and dancer, and her voice is incredibly underrated.
@@PDC1987 bullshit her voice sucks a$$
She did not become an icon for just being Madonna, her live shows are amazing and she is a strong artist, musician, producer and dancer who puts 100 percent quality in everything she produces.
3:36 "Breathless"... omfg I'm dying, this was 3 years before it.
Ever since the start of her career, she's ALWAYS been very cohesive !!!
there's no doubt that not only she's talented but also a VERY SMART WOMAN !!!
Madonna, is still out there nearly 40 yrs later.
She works hard & is her own person. I'm glad I saw her in concert a few years ago, she was electric ⭐️🎶⭐️🎶⭐️🎶⭐️
Jane talked to her like she's her uptight Aunt that Madonna needed approval from....this was comical.
At 1:55 Look at Jane's Face 😀
My God right before her 29th birthday -she was still 28 so worldly yet still fresh and sweet in a way mysterious
I love how no matter how bitchy the interviewers are or how personal, Madonna keeps her cool. I don't think i would have lasted 5 minutes. Effing hell- she is BRILLIANT! WHAT a woman! WHAT a professional!!!!
True.
"It was five dollars? That's disgusting." This interviewer is THE worst.
Jane Pauly is a ding-dong for sure. But Madonna came out on top with her honest answers.
I love this interview, she's so smart, transparent and truthful!!😘👏🏼💚
What an awkward cheesey interviewer

She really doesn’t need all that make up.. She looks like a clown!!!!
Although they cut the footage. Its edited and we don't get to hear the question that inspired Madonna's response
Why, allegedly, would the discerning public that do not idol worship, ever believe an obnoxious lying, narcissistic, mediocre talented, helliweird, satanick masonick, entertainment industry created, wombless gender inverted male, controlled opposition shill, deceiver sellout, ACTOR,
Man donner, who has, for decades, been deliberately mocking, gaslighting, misleading and distracting the good public by masquerading as a female entertainer , ACTOR, and more laughably, as a mother claiming to have given natural child birth, while parading around with a strap-on prosthetic, pregnancy, moon belly bump, trannyesque makeup and heels and utilizing paid helliweird breeder surrogates, allegedly?
The interviewer reeks of envy. She annoyed me to the point of wanting to google her... Hopefully her career is over.

This interviewer sounds like she’s trying to get to her and put her down.
I think Jane Pauley was very flattering in her questioning style. I think it seems more awkward because its the full interview and not what is cut down for TV. I think Jane Pauley is looking for stuff that will be good in the edit for TV. I think its a very sweet interview. She seems genuinely impressed by Madonna. People need to understand that this information was not as well known as it is today.
It's actually a good interview and she seems genuinely interested in Madonna. I don't understand why everyone is beating up on Jane Pauley. She has interviewed her since so Madonna obviously liked her.
The way Madonna answered all the questions with so much ease ...she made the interviewer sound dumb. Madonna was brilliant throughout.💞💞💞
This interview plays like a MadTV sketch. How Jane Pauley ever got on TV is beyond me. Experiences like this are why, to this day, Madonna hates the media and doing press tours.
