      The GRE. The 7900 XT and 7900 GRE both have exceptional performance. When it's just a 10-30 fps difference, I wouldn't spend another couple hundred dollars. I would stick to that batter price/performance.

    The 7800 xt was the go-to for 1440p, but with this at just 50 dollars more, the 7900 GRE is the new 1440p go-to. The new OC update, which is allowing around 10-15 percent more performance increase on average, justifies buying it now. Can't beat those thermals either.

    7900XT Temps can be compensated for utilizing undervolting, and Honeywell PTM7950 which helps reduce hotspot delta by around 20°c which helps a TON in dropping the overall temp.
    I run PTM7950 on my XFX SPeedster Merc 310 RX 7900XT and don't even have to push the fans past 50% anymore to maintain under 75°c on the hotspot whereas with the Noctua NH-2 and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut I had trouble keeping it ANYWHERE near a 20°c delta compared to core without cranking the fans to over 75%.

      do you just put the honeywell pad on the GPU die? how hard is it to disassemble and reassemble the GPU? im just concerned i might put it back together in a way that makes it perform worse after doing so

    • @Dracconus
      @Dracconus 4 месяца назад +1

      @sacredeyes3508 the ONLY things you have to be careful of are screw placement and tension (finger tight) and thermal pads ripping when you disassemble.
      Ptm is a pad, but it phase changes into a liquid when heated. The performance of it thermally is on par with artic mx4. What makes it so good for THESE GPUs is that it won't pump out of the channels between the CCDs on the die like thermal paste does.
      Every gpu make / model has different pads, but you can contact your manufacturer to ask which pad sizes they used, or measure them yourself with calipers.
      A torn pad isn't the end of the world, but it isn't optimal and defeats the purpose.
      Too thin = no heat transfer. Too thick = bent PCB, potentially cracked GPU die, and / or poor transfer.

      @@sacredeyes3508 Nope, they work absolutely great on anything that has split-die construction like these. Obviously something like carbon pads would be "better" in terms of reusability, but the added cost paired with the complexity of installation makes them not really worth it when you consider that carbon's thermal transfer capability is horizontal not vertical, so a carbon pad only does about as good as MX-5.

    its a bit awkward, the 7900GRE is like the ultimate 1440p card, where as the 7900XT feels like overkill for 1440p, yet, the 7900GRE is JUST not good enough for 4k, atleast not in all games, or unless you start to talk about RT and FSR, yet, the 7900XT is like the 'worst' current gen 4k card, where it CAN do it in all games, if you are selective about graphic settings and RT and maybe in the occasional game FSR.

      Yeah, I was really looking to buy a 7900 XT, as a "want" Upgrade from the 6800. My Oled tops out at 120hz and I'd like to play my racing sims at 4k120 native. The GRE was not enough of an upgrade to matter, and the 7900 XT would likely struggle here and there. So If I'm splurging €800 for an Upgrade I don't really need all that much, I might as well go for the €930 Merc 310 and be done with it. All these cards are too expensive, but the GRE is probably the most reasonable ATM... If it wasn't a binned card that varies hugely in OC performance. SMH.

      Its pasted with ptm7950 pad. Powercolor is doing this since 7800XT due to paste pumpout on 7900XT/XTX overtime leading to high hotspot temps (all manufs have it, its cus of the chiplet gpu design this gen, just google it. Sapphire seems to be less affected then others (thicker paste probably, but the pad solves all of it so good on Powercolor)
      That being said I would buy Sapphire to get Hynix ram instead of Samsung if you plan to overclock GRE. (I tried Hellhound and now have Pulse). Hellhound does have more power limit to play with tho but using 330watt vs 260 for 3-5 fps more is not really interesting.
      Also on 250-300 watt the pumpout issue is not so prevalent. Its more when we are talking 400w+ XTX cards. Just get the cheapest GRE (Maybe not the 2 fan Asrock model)

      Hey did you decide? personally id go the 7600 with a high end GPU (4080 super) is still better. Unless the only games you play are CPU intensive like esports. However, with this setup you'll still get 175 + fps and sometimes to 300 anyway. So IMO its overkill either way. You might as well get the better gpu which will last you at 3-5 years. the cpu is cheap and am5 so it can be replaced in 2 years to the best x3d chip then with no changes in Mobo.

      @@phillybb hey, if that's the case go with the 7800x3d. It will benefit you more for higher frames for esports/multiplayer, less 1% lows and higher ones, and higher frames overall. if you need a GPU on a budget to accomodate that CPU then save 200 bucks on the 7900GRE. If you can afford more then go 7900xt. Either combo will destroy anything at 1080p and 1440p multiplayer for the next 4 years minimum.

    I'm just wondering if this is a Hellhound GRE vs "reference" sapphire XT. If so, there IS some performance left on the table because the base sapphire models run hotter with less stable clock speeds.
    Just some food for thought. We might be talking 1-5% performance difference, but I'm pretty sure a Hellhound model XT would be within a few °C difference, if it runs hotter at all.

      @@jbroadbelt6 Chill out dude, I'm just realizing that maybe the person who replied to me initially wanted FPS numbers instead of my undervolt numbers. I just assumed the latter. Either way, while you were stroking out as you typed you kinda showed your ingnorance.
      First, the 7900XT doesn't touch a 4090, I know that so no I would never say the GRE is anywhere close. AMD's X900XT cards are usually at the RTX X080 cards. AMD has no 4090 competitor, we all know it.
      Second, I compared my numbers to what I saw in the video, there are variables I did not account for like what difficulty was the reviewer playing at, what biome, how much action was taking place, how big are the mobs. Helldivers doesn't have a benchmark so I can't do total apples to apples comparison. My performance may be worse if variables were changed, but on its face when I played a couple missions to see how it felt my numbers were better than the video. I don't know those numbers now it's been weeks since I played Helldivers.
      I know what the GRE is, it's ABOUT a 4070 or 4070ti equivalent with more VRAM. At the end of the day I like the card, it performs well, I don't have a top tier build, I have what I could afford.

  • @spladam3845
    @spladam3845 7 месяцев назад +1

    I have that Hellhound GRE, and by just reducing core voltage by 60-80mV, it will get an 7% performance boost and use 265-270W total board power at the same time, as opposed to 280-290W. Seems to work for most.
    The cooler on the Hellhound is amazing, but the Sapphire models have the SK hynix memory modules, and they seem to overclock better. Almost all models you can get the VRAM up to 19Gb/s, adding some more performance on top of the core clock headroom.
    8% relative performance increase puts it in the Raster area of some VERY expensive GPUs.

      Middle of the road I guess, slightly pricier than a 7800 XT, but not as pricey as any of the 7900s, and more VRAM than anything Nvidia are providing. I think it's a decent compromise, especially if you're leaning more towards 1440p gaming at decently high refresh rates and you're looking to dip your toes into the Red team's pool (or at least, that was my justification for getting it).
      This was the card that made me switch to AMD, as I was tired of searching for 2nd hand 3080 Ti and 3090s for minimum £500... I started asking myself "Why not just get a new card from Green's line up for that kind of money?", but then I checked, and I couldn't justify spending a small fortune on 12/16GB (max) VRAM GPU, even with NVidia's shiny bells and whistles. Even some of the cheaper options, like RTX 4060, are just not up to scratch (for obvious reasons, lol). Nvidia's new "Ti Super Duper Ultra mega" 4070s look compelling, but they're still too expensive. The 4080 and 90 are not even on the table for discussion...
      I just hope AMD can continue to improve FSR, like they've demonstrated in tests recently. This, plus the mem OC will make this card a real favourite I imagine. I just wish that board partners would include an anti sag bracket with the damn thing, it's heavy af as I'm sure @EsrockOnTech will probably agree, it's crazy that PowerColor don't give you one! 😂

    Hello, Thanks for this!! I am looking forward to build new pc, so I would be glad if you could help me a bit. I want pc that will last at least 5years without mayor upgrades. I want it to be easily upgradable so I will go with AM5 socket chip Ryzen 7 7700x or 7 7800x3d.. And now to my biggest question: do you think that 7900 gre is future proof enough. Or should I go for 7900XT or expensive 4070 super (with this card i am scared of only 12gb ram) (In my country the price increase from gre to xt is around 25% and from gre to super under 7%.
    (One more question how big diference does the manufacturer make. You have 7900 gre from power color but in my region I have only gigabyte or sapphire avalible)
    Thanks for helping out!! And sorry for soo many questions, I am new to pc building.

      There isn't any significant difference. Even cheap versions like the Powercolor Fighter keep cool enough for heavy daily use and the power limits in the BIOS do not allow overclocking to the degree that these cheaper coolers would start to fall short.

      You should go with 4070 Ti Super with 16 Gb. I consider it timeproof. And 7800X3D as CPU

    I'm comparing these cards for 2 reasons; price, and case. I have a case that I like, but as an mATX case it doesn't support any of the 7900xt cards outside of the Sapphire Pulse. 7900gre opens up a couple more GPU options. The alternative is to just buy a new case, which I can, I just don't want to have a bunch of cases laying around. None of my build lists have a difference of more than $110. I'm on the fence.

    • @ErockOnTech

      Get the GPU you want in my opinion and just get a new case. It’s been my experience that people buy PC cases very fast on the Facebook marketplace if you list it low enough

    Have to wonder what it will look like come the end of year sales, since end of 2023 its not hard to find 7900xt for $700 or even lower with some patience(690$ not much but its still lower).

  • @BoodymeatJr
    @BoodymeatJr 2 месяца назад

    Here’s my thing, if you want a 1440p experience at max graphics with 180 fps then that’s about all a higher end cards are worth it for, I have the 7900 gre with a R9 7900x and get about 120 fps on brand new games and ludicrous fps on less demanding games. The other things is that the cost of an oled 1440 p or 4k monitor costs as much as if not more than the nvidia cards so the best bang for your buck is gonna be an oled monitor with one of these rather than a 4k monitor on 4k with a 4090 only playing maybe 90 fps max

      Definitely. Unless your job is 3D modeling or animation, in that case; the 4070 Ti Super would be worth it. But if you're just a gamer with some video editing or something, then go with the 4070 Super. (4070 Ti is never worth it anymore)

      Maybe in 3 or 2 more year you'll see if the difference is worth it. Each year games will need bigger vram which the 7900xt has so paying $70 could be an investment.
