    The 22-250 has been my daily rifle for the last 40 years. I've taken every type of game from feedlot rats to deer with the rifle. Though I've acquired more than a dozen rifles in this caliber, my original and favorite is an old Remington 700 BDL varmint special that my Dad purchased new in the late 60's. My longest shot on a coyote was a stepped off 580 yards with a Speer 52 grain HP.

    I broke the third metacarpal bone in my right hand the day before opening deer season. No time for a cast in deer camp and as a right handed shooter, I had to use my 22-250 with 64 grain Nosler bonded bullets at 3500 fps. Dropped a nice 8 pointer in his tracks at 125 yards. Couldn’t have made that shot with any caliber that had recoil. The 22-250 gets the job done!

  • @220swift7
    @220swift7 2 года назад +14

    While the Swift was my first cartridge love, I haven't owned one in twenty years. The 22-250 is basically identical in terms of performance, there are many more loads available, and you can actually find ammo. If you reload, the 22-250 is still a better choice. Brass for the Swift can be difficult to source. Here in the Midwest, the 22-250 is absolutely king. Followed by the 243 Winchester, then the 223. Hardly anyone around here uses the 204 Ruger. It really struggles in the wind with those lightweight bullets.

      @@nathanielwowchuk6880 That is a good argument, but using a Remington 7400 setup for 22-250, you have the frame there once the battery cycle is optimized. The 22-250 in my experience has always reliably opened up a Nosler or Hornady hollow point I have seen a wound track that opened to a 50 caliber projectile that retained the energy to go through a skull, spine bounce around while still spinning in the soft tissue and make a big jagged exit wound. I wish our military could be armed with one man per squad equipped with an automatic weapon with this cartridge. It is a good 👍 example of ballistic effect.

    The 22-250 is everything you said and more, I don't mind going to a P-dog town and shooting 300 to 400 rounds of it in a day. Same as shooting 500 rounds of .223. Barrels are expendable, they are a wear item, this is why they have gunsmith's! I don't think I have one rifle that doesn't have a replacement barrel on it. I have re-barreled my 2, 22-250's 3 times each and am waiting for a new barrel from Brux so I can spin up my third rifle in it. If you reload for it you really need to anneal your cases every time, and having a lot of cases is smart if you shoot it a lot. Brass by brand is Lapua and Norma with everything else as needing a lot of work. Twist wise it should have a 1/12 , a 1/10 or 9 even better and as reach out and make a coyote have a bad day as he hangs up just below the ridge line a 1/8 twist with a gain twist barrel from Bartlein 9 twist to 8 twist. And if your right handed get it a left hand twist.

      The 243 was not made to be loaded that hot. The bullets are heavy and a bull barrel is a must. The 257 Roberts is a good round, better aerodynamics and it like the 22-250 with the bull barrel have good twist and are made for the aerodynamic cartridges. Also the 257Roberts and 22-250 end up on better compensated ballistic frames. A set of 22-250s have the juice to operate a Remington 7400 semi-automatic and the gun actually likes some smith work to keep in timing with the aerodynamics of the round in quick battery. It can cycle really crazy and never hurt a gun made for a .270 or .30-06. I just love seeing the hit on the target before you register the report and have to go back to first principle to prevent a flinch. The sight through the scope and micro second delay in anticipation can throw off even the best trained person. It is amazing.

    Too much meat damage on deer, assuming you're at reasonable range. Also, the .22 bullet will fly all over the place in anything other than calm wind conditions, If you have to shoot thru brush, well, forget it. Also, the higher speed rounds can produce some really impressive throat erosion in your rifle...so enjoy it while you can. For some 55 years now, I've been handloading the 6mm Remington I bought when my father bought his 22-250. An excellent hunter and rifle shot himself (he was 20/17 in his 'shooting' eye) he kept the rifle for about 2 weeks at which time he returned it to the shop he bought it at. (you used to be able to do that :) He then bought his all time favorite rifle, a pre-67 Winchester model 70 in 270 with which I don't recall him EVER missing a killing shot. The longest one I ever saw him make, was at a big buck Mule deer cross a Colorado mountain valley and up the side of the mountain. It was so far, neither I nor anyone else in the hunting party could even see the deer he said he was going to shoot. Leaning across the hood of his old Jeep ( you used to be able to do that too:) He fired a single round. None of us saw a damned thing move. He took the rounds out of the magazine, and calmly announced " Got Him:) At this point none of us believed him, and frankly were a bit irritated that he had clearly spooked every deer in that valley with the shot. He then smiled, and sent my brother across and up the mountain to find the buck, telling him that HE had to stay put so as guide my bro to where the Deer fell.
    With the rest of us grumbling and bitching, it took my brother about an hour to get to where Dad motioned him to go, then another 20 minutes or so searching around before he suddenly disappeared then reappeared with both hands waiving over his head. The Buck had been standing on a small rocky outcropping shaded by the pines, and when he died he dropped into a heavy thicket just below. My bro couldn't find him, until he climbed up on to the rock and looked straight down into the brush at his feet. Of course this was before electronic rangefinders, but my guess would've put the shot at something over 700 -750 yards, maybe a bit more due to the elevation above us. Took HOURS to drag that buck down to where we could get the jeep close enough to load him up. If I remember right, was 8 points on one side and seven on the other- a BIG Muley:)
    I tell you all this, because my dad could SHOOT, and the reason he returned the 22-250 was that it slung bullets all over the place in the varying winds and scrub we usually hunted. Both Rifles were Winchester Model 70's. I suppose it MIGHT have been a problem rifle, but the owner of the shop had his gunsmith look it over and he found no obvious defects. As for my 6mm :) my brother got his .243 the same day, with which he proved to be simply deadly, even off-hand out to 300=350 yards; while I preferred the larger case capacity of the 6mm Rem (Dad let us both choose what we each wanted- was a magic day:) Past 375 yds or so, I could outshoot him (still can :), but not off-hand as his skill is just freaky in that regard. I once flushed a good sized buck and could only watch wistfully as it bounded away down broken terrain below me when I heard the shot from above and behind me and to the right. Bro hit that buck right in the base of the skull in mid jump when one of his leaps momentarily raised his head above the brush- just short of oh, 200 odd yards from me and about 250 from where he was behind me. Wasn't the only time i saw him do stuff like that :)

    My first deer gun was a savage 222 rem, and I still have it. When I bought my first gun myself, a 30-06, I used the 222 rem for varmint hunting , until I got a 22-250 and fell in love. Taken a lot of deer, many pigs, and countless varmints with that 22-250 and it’s never failed. I killed a big 8 point whitetail buck at 260 yards and a nice 3x3 muley at 150 yards with it and neither deer went more than 50 yards before folding up. Pigs in the head don’t stand a chance. I love that caliber and the accuracy of my Remington 700 using hornady 55 gr v max. It’s definitely not my go to deer rifle but I would not hesitate to shoot a deer in season if saw one while varmint hunting.

    I have 2. Remington 788 and 98 Mauser my had dad built by J E Gebby back in early 50s. It has a Unertl ultra varminter scope and 26" barrel. Problem was Gebby 22-250 chamber isnt as forgiving as Remington so I had it brought to SAMI Remington specs and can now use off shelf ammo. No longer restricted to reloading fire formed brass only.

    I personally dunno how it'd do at the long range shooting on coyotes. But just before deer season I took a yote up close and personal (like 15yds tops) from doing predator-calling with Hornady's 35gr NTX .233 Rem, that touts 4000fps! And I was shocked with it's wounding on that close-up shot like that. I didn't know yotes had that much blood in them! I do realize though that being a close-up shot virtually anything would look more impressive then it normally does. I gave it a try after seeing the FoxPro TV channel guys use that same projectile in a .22-250 offering they also make with it, and I was impressed. And it hits so fast I saw some of the action happen in the scope! I'd say exit was a lil less than golfball sized. Entrance wound, the hole, was like... size of a dime or penny maybe? Definitely give that round a try if you wanna pump-up your favorite .223 Rem rifle platform with some more velocity for the yotes!

    LOVE the 22 250. I once saw my dad knock down a standing woodchuck at almost 300 yards. The rifle was the cheapest Remington available at the time with a cheap Tasco scope. I don't recall the rifles model number. I also saw him head shoot a swimming muskrat at 200 yards or so. I wish I was as good as him, but alas, I'm not. Once he got too shaky to shoot I took the rifle out west with me; our house was robbed and the SOB took my dad's rifle. Oh well.

      Exactly. It will push a 55 gr 4000, and have more versatility for longer, heavier bullets if needed from most factory rifles. Most .22-250 are too slow twisted to take advantage of heavier .22 bullets and they won’t equal a heavier 6mm no matter how hard they try.

    Thoughts on 22 Creedmoor? My 3rd favorite rifle of all time was a 22-250. I bought it used. It was a Remington 700 action that someone had customized with a heavy barrel, glass bedded and custom stock. It was a tack driver. One other thing, 22-250 doesn't damage pelts if a person shoots a coyote high in the shoulder.

    What do you think about the Bergara's choice of 1 in 9 twist? I know 1 in 12/14 is traditional. I've heard 1 in 8 is popular to shoot the heaviest bullet 90. Have you experimented to see when you start losing stability with heavy bullets? I would be satisfied up to 75 that covers most of the hunting bullets. The bullets heavier than that are mostly match. Thank you I'd love to hear your opinion on this . 👍
