My first centerfire rifle was a .270 Win and I still have it (and love it). Living in north central British Columbia, I wanted something with more oomph for grizzlies and for hunting in the mountains where long range shots are a fact of life. 35 years ago I got a .300 Win Mag made by Krico. It's a genuine tack driver. The recoil is stout but manageable. It loves good old Hornady 180 gr. flat base InterLocks. It's my go to moose and mountain rifle. I have absolutely no desire or need of any other 30 calibre magnum.
Reloading is easy. IMR 4831 works great. Yes, there's lots of newer powders but when you're getting half minute groups at 200 yards, why try 'fixing' it?

I'm a fan of the 300WM. I own 3 and have owned at lest 3 others in the past. Very accurate. I hand load, so I can turn it in to a 30-30, 308 and a 30-06. Four guns in one. Recoil is stout. I have a Remington stainless that came with a factory muzzle break and it recoils less than a 308. It truly is a pleasure to shoot.
Thanks for expounding on the 300 WM! Currently I'm setting up a Browning BLR take down as go anywhere gun. I'm getting it threaded for a break because the straight stock will kick you very hard. Thanks

Everyone keeps saying that the 300 wsm has the same ballistics as the 300 wm, its just not true. The 300 wm has a 90-100fps advantage over the wsm and it can run much heavier bullets. You can run a 220 gr 300 wm at the same velocity as a 200 gr bullet in a 300 wsm. Saying they are the same is like saying the 30-06 is the same as the 300 wsm. The 300 wm may be slightly less efficient, but just barely. The 300 wsm is a fine cartridge and if I didn't already have 4 magnum rifles, I would buy one. If it was the same as the 300 wm, the 300 wm would fall off the map.

My first center fire rifle was/is a Weatherby Vanguard in 7MM Remington Mag, been handloading for it since 2001And that belt on the brass does require some extra steps in the reloading process. It has less recoil than the 30-06 and shoots flatter with higher BC’s
Bullets. What’s not to love .

I've told this story a couple of times before but not sure if I told it on this channel. When I was in highschool I worked at a small local gun shop. I basically grew up in this shop.
Anyway.. my job throughout highschool was to load my pickup up with every used rifle we had come in on trade, mount one of our entry level scopes(sightron at the time) on it sight it in and put it back on the shelf with a target group cutout for sale as a "ready to go" rifle. I did this with every caliber imaginable. 17 all the way up to some 416 calibers.
Anyway I'll get to the point... There was a used Kimber featherweight in 300 win mag that came in that looked like someone had dragged behind a pickup with a chain...rust scrapes, scratches, cracks. It shot lights out though. So it was priced to sell. We ended up selling and rebuying the rifle THREE times in as many weeks and the complaint was always the same. "Sob kicks like a mule!!, "I didn't expect that kind of recoil!!" Each time we refitted the shooter with either a 30-06 or 270 and they were happy as could be. Of course it didn't help that it was a featherweight. As near as we could tell it was a Kimber custom shop rifle that someone just horribly abused.
I just always got a kick out of that story. It's one of my favorites from that old gun shop.

I was looking to get a 300 PRC but the non availability of brass makes me strongly lean towards getting another 300 Win Mag. I already have lots of brass and the dies, so it makes sense for me to stick with it due to availability. The Bergara MG Lite I’m looking at (not available in 300 PRC) has a magazine long enough to allow seating the big bullets out long enough to get plenty of powder behind. In my Remington 700P it runs out of magazine length before I get near the lands with the 210 Berger. I get 2900 FPS out of my 300 WM with the 210 gr Berger. I was able to get it to 2950 FPS but started getting a stiff bolt so I backed it off

@@jeffgenchi5863 recoil on a 300 win mag with a brake isn’t that bad, to me. It’s pretty snappy without a brake in a hunting weight rifle. My 308 win POF Revolution DI isn’t a traditional hunting rifle but it is a 6.8 pound AR platform rifle with a good brake on it, and it certainly kicks way less than a similar weight 300 win mag. Cheaper to load 308 for sure, takes barely over half the powder I’m using in my 300 WM. But the 300 WM reaches out very flat and hits with authority.

Ah...finally a opinion that I can bring another perspective too. The short neck also has more support. They won't crack as soon as a long neck. So if your reloading. They will give you additional loads. The belt. Because of the straight wall of the case, they tend to stick after discharge. With the added belt and chamber ment for it. The gasses that do make it backwards have a seal before the bolt face. Helping with cases from pushing out against the chamber wall as much. Helping with ejection. Even with cases such as the Mauser and British .303. That belt has proven itself in exstream trench war conditions. There are only two cartridges in this family as iam concerned. Two with similar flight path and case design. The 300 win mag and 7mm mag. Definitely hard on the shoulder! We still have a long way to go in ammunition design. More about calibers... then projectile design. A short action could easily compete if the projectile had better designs.

It came with a fixed 4x scope but I had a spare Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9x40 with the 600 DOA reticle and put it on. The pit where I shoot is only 110 yards long but I was getting incredible accuracy. Stay safe and happy shooting.

The reason that it is head spaced with the belt is because it is based on the 375 H&H cartridge and when the engineers designed that cartridge they didn't think that there was enough shoulder on that case to properly set the head spacing so they came up with the belt as a way to head spaced it. All belted magnums are based on the 375 H&H case which is why they all have a belt. It has nothing to do with case strength. It is purely there for head spacing.

The "belt bulge" is real. Think of it like the muffin top on a fat person. Brass builds up just ahead of the belt, slid down the case, as a result of normal full-length sizing. My 7mm Mag would have trouble chambering after two or three resizings. The collet resizing die fixed this problem. I can get 10+ resizings with it.

Recoil recoil recoil such a big part of what everyone seems to be talking about these days. I have shot my entire life and recoil for hunting plays no factor in what I shoot. In the excitement of a shot I don't even notice the recoil I'm too worried about getting the animal down cleanly and ethically. Then after it's down all I feel is excitement and relief knowing I put meals on my families plate for the next year. I consistently choose my 300 win mag tikks tsx lite or 300 wsm model 70 featherweight for deer and my elk gun is a 300 Weatherby in an ultralight mark 5. And never notice any wince or pull due to expecting unwanted recoil.

To this very day I know that my 300 win mags are the cream of the crop, and I ain't kidding either! A 350 yd. Point blank range with regular 180 gr. With a good brake, I don’t think the recoil is any worse than a 30.06. Only thing keeping me from getting one, is the scarcity of primers and powder. I’ve got plenty of brass, and actually have a good supply of 4350 and 4831 powder, but large rifle magnum primers are near impossible to find, and I rarely used them before, so I only have 300 in my stash. If I could find a brick of them, I’d get either the Ruger Precision or the Savage 110 precision.

Back in 2007 I picked up a winchester Model 70 300 win mag that was a win custom shop gun with the claw extractor new for $325 on clearance at scheels that they found buried in the back. I’m still laughing finding that right after they put it out with that price tag. It was dirt cheap then and it was just after winchester discontinued the model 70 for a few years. It was a gun a guy ordered put money down and never paid off and picked up so basically I had to cover the remainder of he owed.
Same day I then went to gander mountain and picked up a 300wsm model 70 sporter for $500 bucks. I have 825 bucks in two win m-70 300 mags. Feel like I hit the lotto that day

I'm not sure why everybody gets wound up about the short neck on the winmag.
I'm running 208's at 2900fps 50' above sea level out of a 26"barrel. I don't think the bullet getting into the powder column is hurting anything.
If you built a chamber around the round you intend to shoot, like hornady has with all the latest flavors of the month, you'll find out pretty quick that most of the new cartridges don't bring that much more to the table.
Check out Mark and sam after work's testing of the big 30's. The winmag pulls ahead with the big bullets. The prc and the Norma really shine with the 225-225gr bullets. Which is what they were designed for.

I have something to add to your commentary about the 300 Win Mag. Especially when you compare it to the overrated 300 PRC. You can make the the 300 Win Mag far more versatile and easily comparable to the PRC by shooting the heavier, longer bullets and simply seat them out to a longer OAL. Many rifles will already be very compatible with this “adjustment” such as Remington, and Winchester, and with minor machining by a gunsmith the Savage 110. However, the Savage 110 will handle them in unmodified form and still allow you to have a two shooter vs a three shooter simply by loading one in the magazine and one in the chamber in a hunting or even a target situation and it functions flawlessly. My Savage 110 shoots the 225gr Hornady ELDM with H1000 powder into 1/2 MOA out to 1500 yds . And the plus side to this is also giving you slightly more powder capacity, which in turn makes the cartridge even more effective and efficient by bumping your velocity while keeping your pressures safe…. Other than that the 300 Win Mag is by far the most versatile cartridge in the fields. Love your shows, keep up the good work

We have way more cartridges then we need. With so many great choices these days, we can afford to be very choosy (even picky) with our preferences. I prefer not to have belts on my cartridges. I prefer a longer neck for caliber than the .300 Win Mag, and a wider powder column. I found the 6.5 Creedmoor does everything I need from a full-power rifle cartridge. I'm down to loading only that and the .223 Remington (all of my rifles are in either of these two calibers). It's wonderful logistically to only purchase two kinds of bullets, cases, primers, powders, reloading trays, dies, etc. What practical gain would I enjoy by adding more complexity. If I ever had a need for something larger, I'd purchase a .338 Lapua and be done with it.

An Alaska Master Guide told me that the 300 Win Mag is the best all around cartridge for North America. The neck length is a non issue. Headspace off the 30 deg shoulder. My rifle is a Model 70 controlled feed G series action. McMillan stock. Talley detachable mounts, Zeiss scope. Pac Nor Super Match Barrel 3 contour. SAAMI min body and match throat and lede. H4831 behind the 200 grain Nosler partition is poison. Last bull elk at 250 yds dropped so fast the guide could not get the camera going. Ammunition availability is a big problem with the competition. If you can't find ammo in northern Saskatchewan it is a no go for me.

I think I’m going to switch it to 300 wsm when I switch to a carbon fiber barrel due to minimal velocity loss and better compatibility for shooting long bullets in a Tikka action. The biggest benefit to me of 300 wsm and 300 wm over 30-06, is the ability to shoot 190-215 grain bullets at 2800+ fps. My main hunting load for my 300 win mag is a 190 grain ABLR at 2950

The only need for a belted rim is to headspace early highly tapered "rimless" safari cartridges like .375 H&H Magnum that otherwise didn't have a consistent datum point for headspace. Prior magnum cartridges were rimmed, which are problematic in stacked-round magazines. By the the time the more conventional "North American" magnums were in development, the belted rim was not strictly needed but was useful as an established standard with some marketing cache.

There is one other detractor to the 300 Win mag. A 1 in 10 twist rate starts to have problems stabilizing the heavy for caliber bullets. It just boils down to the fact that the gun manufactures need to put a faster twist rate. Other than that the 300 Win mag is the bomb.

Well the 300WM isn’t really designed for long bullets anyway, if you are loading a high BC bullet in a 300, you’re losing a lot of powder capacity because you’ve got to cram the bullet deep in the case. If you need a rifle shooting 215 grain plus bullets the you should get a PRC or Norma mag.
