    In this video I show what my current approach on how to master a song. Even though I would never consider myself to be a mastering engineer, it isn't usual for me to send out a mastered version of my mix to the client.
    The purpose of doing this is to demonstrate to the client what their mix would sound like once it has been through mastering.
    I'm definitely not trying to go for perfection here but rather get it as close as I possibly can. It's really hard to compete with a mastering engineer who has dedicated their entire life to the craft.
    I also realize that this is probably a more expensive way to approach mastering your own song but also realize that there are many free options you can use that can mimic what I am doing. I just personally prefer the sound of my mixes going through the analog gear but that shouldn't stop you from making a great record!

    In this video I show you how I approach mastering my mixes these days. I realize this is not the cheapest route to mastering a mix but there are a lot of ideas to be learned from this approach that you can apply using cheaper alternatives.

    Very good tutorial, but sometimes the nomenclature is a bit off. 'Compression' (using a 'compressor'), NOT 'limiting', is used to reduce the dynamic range of a track or mix; 'make-up gain' can then be applied to make the track or mix louder w/o unwanted distortion. Applied to a mix, it can smooth out the levels of the various tracks and help the mix 'hang together', so to speak. 'Limiting' (using a 'limiter') is very hard compression -- close to infinity:1 -- to avoid clipping or digital distortion. Re distortion: 'Color' IS 'distortion', but used to produce desirable harmonics. (A 'warm' sounding mic or preamp produces its pleasing sound by adding even harmonics to the lower frequencies. A 'sweet' sound can be achieved by adding even harmonics to the higher frequencies. Odd harmonics produce a generally harsh sound, e.g., a distorted electric guitar.) A VERY harsh or 'brittle' sounding distortion comes from 'clipping' the waveform -- the top and bottom of the waveform is flattened, producing a nearly square wave. (This is what fries speakers, btw, and why your speakers should be fed by amps that have plenty of headroom.)

      Clipping does not fry speakers. It's the extra power output FROM clipping that fries speakers. This extra power output comes from the speaker's amplifiers. Why? Because the clipped waveform signal has more area underneath it than the same waveform, at the same amplitude, but not clipped. In short, a clipped signal, as long as it isn't loud enough to drive the amplifier will NOT cause problems to the speakers.

    • @ricochofsky8293
      @ricochofsky8293 7 лет назад +1

      I was referring to power amp clipping. I thought that was apparent; perhaps not.

    It's interesting to see you clip the converts first. Most mastering engineers clip the converts last. Thanks for sharing!

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад +1

      Hey Matt. I'm actually clipping in the anolog section, not the digital section so that's probably why. From what I understand, Mastering engineers have ridiculously expensive converters and will clip the digital stage and use that as the final output. I have an interview coming out soon with mixer/master Luca Pretolesi. He explains how he does that digital clipping technique. Cheers.

      +Nexx Figueroa Whenever you have a "self-thought" theory, my advice is to try it out and test it until the cows come home. If I never acted on that thought I would never have used the API's on my mixes. Like seriously most people would say that putting a mix through preamps is not recommended because of line level/mix level issues and because it's meant for recording - yada yada yada. But seriously it sounds amazing. Cheers Dude!

    Clipping is actually not recommended for digitally distributed music as most services use normalizing these days. Basically you'll have a clipped audio file at -9-14 LUFS. Also to A-B match in Ozone, use the 'ear' button under 'Audition'.

There is the Rupert Neve MBP II, which is amazing! That and a good stereo Eq and you are ready. Cheers!

    • @ModernMixing

      bigdap100 That's a good question. I don't really have an answer. If you have cheaper gear, I would probably just stay inside the box because you could probably get better results with plugins. Atleast I would stay in the box if I had like a $200 preamp and $250 compressor. But then again I might experiment with the sound going out and see what I like better. Cheers.

    Hi Justin, great video! great mix! I'm in the market to get a 2 track ADC to get my summed mixes back into my computer. And I have a couple questions regarding the API a2d if you don't mind answering. Do you still use this unit to print in 2019? Does the A2D conversion quality still stands up to the modern reference grade 2-channel converters? I like how this unit has the pres and the converter in one box, but I already have some good pres, I don't really need them they will of course be great coloring tools for my 2-bus. In the used market, I can probably get some ADC like Antelope Pure2, BLA sparrow white or RME ADI-2-Pro FS in the same price range. What do you recommend? Also, for the A2D, do you feed the printing signal through the mic ins or the line-ins? And why? Sorry for the long question and it will be much appreciated if you could answer them!
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks again and keep posting more videos on Mastering please.

      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад

      +Akshay Singh Khanna I'm not too familiar with those box but I have used a RME FF800 before and I really liked the converters in that box. I thought they sounded really good considering the price point. I would go out of the RME and into the API and that should get you decent results. I wouldn't put anything else into it's path unless it's high quality gear. If you have a chose between low budget gear and staying inside the box, I would stay inside the box.

    • @akshaykhanna1396

      Thank you so much indeed. I am trying to source a Mytek 96 DA as was in the video tutorial but it is proving difficult so far given my geographic location. Since, I am planning to invest in the API A2D would you perhaps advise on buying something better or should I stick to the API given its price point? I am just getting into mastering and do not have the luxury of trying out gear therefore your advise is most valuable. Thank you again and I would love to see more videos/sessions on mastering.

    I think that a good idea, if you are a sound engineer, to mix sound of your video correctly. Voiceover and music example differ A LOT! If you master "mastering" it is not so heavy to compress voiceover a little bit before uploading tutorial. Sound example sounds great, but I tutorial didn't get a sense for me...

  • @falconeddymastering5347
    @falconeddymastering5347 8 лет назад +1

    Well, soft clipping conversions as well as digital clipping (depending on the musical content) are a part of everyday mastering. It wasn't bad, but you plateau'd your waveform (and dynamics) because of the way you set up your ratios for threshold and peak and type of limiting. Experience will change that.

      I have 16 db headroom, but for this you must have realy good preamp, microphone, reciever and many more special analog and digital equipment....hardwork....but after...hard good sound. Very important is AD/DA convertor and preamplifer...and of course microphone....i like microphone Marsall, MXM. Exist more dynamic headroom but for more you must have very good room and other harware like profesionaly room for recording in studio. Thats e hard skill !

    The song actually sounds like a hit! Is it something you were working on?
    My mixes look like the bottom end on the spectrum analyzer are weak even when I have the bass pumping as loud as I can. What can I do? Is it because most of my eq is adding a tiny bit of high end and hardly any bottom? If so how do I reconcile this if it was the best sound for each instrument individually?
    Have you done a vid on balancing your mix? What about panning and filling up the entire spectrum?
    I'm mixing Afro-Cuban music and it's very hard to not get cluttered cause it's a lot of instruments like a big band ensemble.
    Any tips?

    The 312 is a mic pre and designed for mics brother, not bussing a mix through? Why not get an analog summing mixer to buss and print your stems out? Am I wrong or is there a sonic improvement by doing this?

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  8 лет назад

      +Jazzyman Sigh.... Music (especially mixing) is art. A mic preamp is a tool designed for a specific purpose but can be used for anything that your imagination will allow. The first thing that comes to mind is engineers reamping sound. Basically sending the sound out through a speaker, in a room, setting up a mic and then recording it back into the DAW so they could add texture or space to the sound. So think of it like art, if you think something could work, try it out and see if it sounds better. If not then at least no one got hurt!!!!

    I like your clean and straight to the point Tutorial Sir !!! Great Stuff.
    1. As i am a Beginner, I bought Acid Pro 7 from NYC H & B Photo and Audio Store online as my DAW. I see you have Pro-Tools Sir.... Can I achieve as good results with it {Acid Pro 7) ???
    2. Before Going into clicking with a PC and Acid-7... I bought the Table Top- Hands-on (Tascam-2488 Neo 24TRK Digital Portable Recorder) Sir. What do you think of this as a Mastering - Mixing avenue Sir ???
    *** You sound like a serious fella and I rather hear your opinion than from some ill-informed individual SIr.
    As a beginner noone takes us serious , but I am trying hard to be taken serious Sir. I hope you have a minute or two to reply Sir.

    Great Video. Thanks for showing the process. Love the subtle approaches in stages to get the results. Question: How do you handle Bit Depth and Sample Rate conversion? If a session comes to you at 24/96 or 24/44 and you need to deliver a 16/44 master for CD, where do you apply the conversion and dithering?
    Everytime I try to make the conversion, the printed master results are poor. I either get some small distortion or it sounds cloudy. I've tried using Ozone 5 inside Pro Tools in the past for a final mastering step, but I'm guessing I'm not handling it right.

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад

      Aaron Doerr I don't do a lot of mastering, I mostly do mixing stuff and then master my own stuff. When I get the files in, I just upload them into Pro Tools at 24/41 and use the built in conversion . When I'm printing, I either use the PWR Dither plugin or Ozone 6. I generally don't worry about it.

    How you out your signal from computer and back input digitally ,,, do you have digital card insert in your computer or it has spdif in/out socket. Please explain I follow you from the beginning of this video 👍🙏

    I'm getting ready to buy one of these. I don't understand the routing. Do I need an external clock since it's SPDIF? My computer doesn't have a SPDIF port, neither does my Thunderbolt port. How do you connect SPDIF? My interface has an in and out

    The tracks were probably better on this song than most of your "students" have to begin with.
    But I actually like it better pre-iZotope. The blue mix sounded warmer to me and the green mix had that obvious eq air sound in comparison.

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  8 лет назад

      +erestube Maybe, but if your track recordings suck then you need to focus on better production techniques, recording techniques and so on. I could also say that Taylor Swifts records sound better because she has better recordings. You just have to work with what you got and make the best of it. Also if you need good quality tracks to use ASAP then you should really check out the modernmixing.com/multitracks Cheers.

    How are you going line input into the API? I notice in the video, you are not using the LINE INPUTS on the front of the API. So how are you sending line level into the XLR mic inputs on the back of the unit?

    Is the mytek Stereo DAC specific for this? If I go via firewire from my laptop to my Sapphire, then Analog out to the Api a2d, would it be lacking any stereo enhancement? Great tutorial by the way thanks alot.

    Hey man,
    Brilliant video. Would I be able to do something similar with my Focusrite ISA Two? Should I be using the line in or mic in seeming as they're set up as two different impedances? (I don't want to be blowing my pre's haha) Thanks bud!

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад

      +dangerale Not famaliar with the quality or the sound of the ISA. But I always tells people to refrain from low budget gear when attempting this. A lot of the high quality plugins sound better then the low budge gear these days. It's probably better to mimic this technique inside the box at that point. IF you are using A Class gear, then go crazy!

    Hey great video! I was wondering, why you pulled the limiter peak down to around -6.0 dB on the maximizer? I was always told the limiter peak should be at -0.1 only to make sure the audio doesn't clip, & then you pull the threshold down (like you did) to get more volume out of it. Is this wrong?

    The hardware clipping can also be achieved with the waves plugin BUT who knows what magic the hardware does to the sound as the gain is pushed I don't think the waves software could emulate that but I;m sure acustica nebula could for those looking for the preamp sound without the mega bucks.

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад

      Anomaly Waves or any other company but to be honest I just added a Dangerous BAX into the analog chain and both the BAX and the API do something to the sound that I haven't achieved from digital. Not that it's good or bad, it's really different but I prefer the difference the analog stuff gives me. Cheers.

    Beyond my comprehension and what I have to work with. Any real simple tutorials with PT 11 or 12 stock plug in for mastering for beginners novice?

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  8 лет назад

      +bleek blaw Yes, but why short change you as a viewer. I'm trying to impress the idea of experimentation and also that sticking to the rules doesn't apply. You can use free and stock plugins but they only ever work (for mastering) in certain situations. ie the mix is absolutely perfect and recorded properly without flaw. In most cases you are going to have to add some mojo and color the master (even if it's very slight) to get it to groove and push out the speakers and speak to the audience. Cheers.

    Thanks a lot my friend. I am waiting for another great video from you.

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад +1

      +Mazzika Gamda Yes but it will yield different results. I have a BAX and if the mid range colour is similar on the DBOX then it should add something nice to the sound. The only thing is you won't be able to clip like you can on the APIs. So I would just use the DBOX for the color more then anything. Cheers.

      +Modern Mixing thanks again so much and I loved a2d a lot when I saw ur great video. Ok so what about connecting the dbox with a2d. Connect the 2 analog out to the analog in in a2d and take the digital out from a2d to digital in in pro tools so I can use the dbox as and d2a is it a good idea and do u think it will help in a good mastering? And I am thinking to get Avalon AD2044 and use it after dbox and connect it to analog in in api a2d.. What do you think about that. Thanks so much for your help and for great tutorials.

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад +1

      +Mazzika Gamda I don't see why that wouldn't work. MAstering is relative and different for everyone I guess. I just prefer to have some analog on my mix even if it's the back end. It's not super necessary but it gives me that extra 1-5% that I like to hear.

    Hi Justin, many thanks for the video!
    I have never seen somebody using a mic pre to run a full mix through it.
    Are the output level knobs stepped? If not, don't you risk altering the stereo image of the mix?

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад

      hey, the knobs are not stepped. I haven't noticed any stereo image damage, if anything I noticed that the track becomes a bit more defined and sometimes opens up a little bit because the left and right channels are not perfect

      Hm... I guess for me the risk of shifting my phantom center would too high :)
      I think even a couple of tenth of dB of difference between the channels can be enough for that... may (not must!) become an issue which is especially noticable on headphones/earbuds.

    • @ModernMixing
      @ModernMixing  9 лет назад +2

      David Mood There is no risk in my opinion, that's why I love mixing. I would just try it out and see what happens. If you don't like what it does, you can always revert back. This is the beauty of digital. Happy Mixing! :)

      David Mood i ve done this all the time even before i had no idea about mixing and mastering...if the mic pre happens to be a good tube pre then its even more better...it works fine all the times and it gives a more punchy definition
