Citroen C5X review - The first properly cool Citroen for a long time

  • As a big fan of the Citroen brand, I've been a bit disappointed with most models the brand has produced over the last 10 - 15 years. It felt like this historic and highly innovative automaker had lost its way and it had become just another brand for Peugeot to sell cars under. However, recently Citroen has had a bit of a resurgence and nowhere is it more evident than in the new C5X. It may look a tad weird, but it's actually not bad in person, it has a great interior, decent power and an amazing ride quality. I'm impressed.

I just got mine and I must say the car looks even more gorgeous than you think when you see it in videos. I really feel different from other car owners. They all have cars that look like one another, and my car is one of a kind, comfortable, beautiful shape. I just love it.

I’ve had the PHEV for a month now. I can’t charge it at home (apartment building) but I use public chargers whenever I can. Doing so my average petrol consumption is now at 3,8l /100km. And that includes a good amount of highway driving also. Thanks for the excellent review! I can agree wholeheartedly with the review. This is a great car (Women car journalists Big Car of the Year by the way). My wife tells me she gets compliments of its looks all the time and I have also noticed how people look at this car while I drive it. Finally after some hiatus a really good big Citroen. The Big Cat is back!

Nice, I agreee, the C5X is a special and talented machine. I hope I get to test out the PHEV some day just to experience that even more comfortable suspension setup.
      Thanks for watching!

Hey man, really nice and complete car review! I am actually going to test drive the C5X PHEV 225hp next week. Can't wait to experience how it will be.
I am a huge fan of (big) Citroens and this takes me back to the great ones of past decades: the CX, XM and C6. I also have a passion for Swedish cars, particularly Saab (which is unfortunately dead at this point). The older models of Citroens always made for something really special and completely different to most other car brands. The same can be said of Saabs. Compare, for example, the Citroen CX to the Saab 900.
Funny detail on the lower rear spoiler on this beautiful quirky C5X, which almost looks like it has come of a 900 Coupe Turbo.
On the whole I am really excited about this new big Citroen, and happy to see a brand with such rich heritage still being able to offer something different and interesting. Especially in this day and age, where stupid high SUV's are perceived as the benchmark for a good family car. Really excited to be driving and trying it out soon!

Thank you for watching and for this awesome comment! I agree with you on so many points that I'd be willing to go for a beer with you sometime :)
I didn't think to compare the lower rear spoiler to the one on the Saab, but the comparison is spot on. I was more inclined to call it a smaller version of the classic Porsche whale tail spoiler.
I didn't get to experience the plug-in hybrid model, but with the adaptive damper and comfort mode for the suspension, I bet it's that little bit more compliant over the bumps. If you are thinking of buying one of these, maybe try the 1.6 turbo like the one in my review too - I found the power absolutely adequate and the ride unbelievably smooth even without the more sophisticated suspension.

Hello, I have been driving the C5X PHEV since November and have driven 7000 km with it.
Before that I had a C5 diesel for over 20 years.
It is a relaxed and comfortable drive. And yes, the PHEV is worth it. You have to learn to drive it, but the success in terms of fuel consumption is evident every time.
I drive 350 km (one way) home and back to work 2 or 3 times a month. Of that, 100 km are city or roads with a maximum of 100 km per hour. The rest is motorway, which I drive at 120 km/h. The trick is to brake as little as possible and drive with foresight.
The result: between 4.9 and 5.5 litres per 100 km plus one charge of the battery, and then 90 to 95 km of that driven without a combustion engine. All this with winter tyres.
And in the city, it is only worthwhile to a limited extent in Germany, because we still have a C1 and with electricity prices of 0.40 Euro per kWh, the C1 is sometimes cheaper. Depending on petrol prices.

@@renedittmann7907 Thank you for your comment!
That is a really impressive fuel consumption figure, but I'm pretty sure you can achieve a very similar result in the non-PHEV model. I think I averaged around 6.2 in my tester, and I drove in and out of town in equal proportions, so if I only drove it out of town, then it would have dropped below the 6 l/100km mark.
If you plan to drive your C5X in the city a lot and can commit to charging, then maybe the PHEV is worth it, but otherwise it's just not worth the extra money you pay for it IMHO.

Hello, that is also true so far.
In the city without charged battery, the weight is negatively noticeable (6, 1 - 8.6 liters per 100 km ).
Electric in the city comes out financially about the same as gasoline with our C1.
My advantage was that I still received the subsidy in Germany and thus the PHEV was cheaper than the gasoline.
Yesterday I drove my route again: 4.7 liters per 100 km plus one battery charge and 28% of the 350 km without a combustion engine. However, I also had to drive 110km/h (about 50km) because it rained extremely.
Here in Germany, the PHEVs are unfortunately very badly made. I think if you drive these vehicles properly and also charge the battery, you can already save quite a bit on gasoline and get ranges of over 700km without any problems (with the C5 X).

Beware that only the hybrid models have adaptive suspension, and ride much better than the conventionally sprung cars.
The seats are very poor - small, lack support, and under the seat squab there is a metal support bar that cuts into your thighs. Hardly “Advanced Comfort Seats”.

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  Год назад +3

I actually liked the seats in this one - the only part I maybe found a bit small was the seat base, which could have been a bit longer as it didn't give me enough thigh support. However, overall I liked the seats...
Regarding the suspension, I cannot tell as I only drove the version without adaptive dampers. I found ride quality to be excellent even with the passive setup, which is why in the video I don't necessarily recommend paying so much more of the PHEV. I don't think it's worth it.
Did you test both suspension setups?
