seems like tin snips would have been safer than trying to use the hole saw again, but as you said it would still not be a tight fit since the hole is oval (but at least it would have been safer).
Yes, that is a good solution. At least it would keep him in the contest.
To fix the mistake for the contest only he could have flipped the trough and told the judges why.
