I love how you incorporated dermatology and mental health by looking into burden of illness! I, too, began med school at a young age (19) and it’s scary looking back how it could easily have gone pear-shaped. I love the young, spirited girls that we were - umbrella shoved in-situ or not - and the essence of success is determination! Loving your pillow talk series and you are a breath of fresh air on YT ♥️
Dear Dr Shereene, I really enjoyed this video because I’m a medical doctor in Iran trying to move to USA and start a residency program there,I’m literally IN LOVE with Dermatology. But I know as an immigrant my chances are so low. So I’m planning to get into pathology program and then apply for dermatopathology fellowship. I’m going to have a loooooong journey but I’m already loving every part of it. Because it’s my dream. I’m so glad that about a month ago I found you on youtube by accident but watching your videos is kind of becoming my morning routine while I’m getting ready to go to work on 5 am. I adore you and I can’t wait to come to USA and meet you in person. It’s an honor getting to know you. With Love, Dr Aida Hn, MD. ❤
Great story! I’m graduating from Dentistry and it’s been a hard road. Medical and Dental school really test you and changes you as a person. Worth it at the end 👌🏻
This is super helpful! Thank you! I’m post grad considering med school when it wasn’t in my original plan and you are so right by “get your ass off your couch and get what you want” cause one day you just know what you want and you have to get the momentum. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Shereene for sharing your experience, I am a college student at the moment and I needed this kind of inspiration so much! Love your personality and sense of humor, I hope you will do this kind of videos more often. ❤
Dr. Idriss your story inspires me a lot! I am an medical intern from the Philippines. Here, we do the intern year, take the boards, and apply for residency. I can relate to your study habits so much. I didn't like going to classes either because I found that I learn better on my own. I'm also considering Dermatology and you continuously inspire me :)
I really like the "keeping your word to work for 1year for that person inspite of going through daily motion sickness" part... And u narrate so well...more videos please!
Thank you for sharing your story. I moved from Vietnam to the U.S. and started school to be a Med Lab Tech, but I keep getting denied from programs. And your story gives motivation for me to keep trying and get to where I want to be.
Shereene, you are so beautiful, so inspiring, so incredibly sincere! Thank you for sharing, for all your help, for being such an amazing human being full of light and life (and a bit of magic)
Loved your story ! Btw, the “umbrella” analogy was the Best !!! 😂 For me, my pharmacy degree was like something to fall back on; I’m still doing it, but... anyway, looking forward to more “pillowtalk” ❤️
Way way harder for international grads. Lots of work and coincidences. But worth it in the way. You end up having something that's just yours and you feel proud of yourself. So worth it.
Cool Video. By the way, your Harper's BAZAAR nightime skincare was great!! Informative, beautiful! And I like it that you use other not high-end products.💕💓
Hard work pays off! Wow, but I had no idea there was such thing as a 7-year program straight out of high school to get a medical degree. It makes me wonder why more people don't do it. I LOVE your content.
I’m just getting to this one. Love it so much! You are so genuine. Your beauty is off the charts but it isn’t so intimidating because of how genuine you are. I’m a wife to a partner that went through med school and residency and you described it perfectly! It’s every emotion really and we (I say we because I may not have been in class but I was there for the whole ride!) wouldn’t take it back. 💪 mind comes from getting though challenge. 💕 all your videos!
You are very hard working woman! I'm 27 and still in dilemma of having kids or not yet cause worked too hard for this career I have and dont think it is the right time yet for me.
I guess this is a very inspiring story and very relatable because in India , UK , Australia we start our 5 and half or 6 years ( varies from country to country) of med school staight after high school ( where we choose a pre med type of syllabus in the last two years of high school) or gap years of entrace preperation. It was really difficult and stressful in the first year as 18 - 20/21 year old kids out there. Thankfully drinking age is 18 in our state 😂
Hi Dr. Shereene Idriss! My name is Luciana and im 14 years old. You and your story has INSPIRED me to follow the path of being a dermatologist. YOU INSPIRE ME!! Please write back, it would make me so happy! You are so cool!
Love learning more about you. By the way French is my first language. I don’t remember which skin care RUclips person recommended you on Instagram but I’m so glad I found someone like you to follow. You’re so real and great!
I don't usually comment on RUclips but I loved your derma journey so much that I had to! Thank you for the inspiration. 💯 Agree with hard work brings success.... I usually say, you just need to have a big ass for success.... To sit down and learn. Everyone can have it!
Not sure if this video was supposed to make me laugh but it sure did. The prison and “are your hands really hurt” really reside with me 🤷♀️Great story!
New sub here catching up by binge watching, lol! I immediately shared this with my son’s girlfriend who wants to be a cardiac surgeon because I LOVED your analogy of med school!!!! She is a jr in high school and very focused and determined so I have high hopes for her!
Thank you for being so inspiring! Hoping you can also talk about skin care in high in humid countries like asia where varying info is spread (ie. you need/dont need moiturising) Please also talk about the most effective way to clear black heads and minimize pores. Also, I was wondering if you recomment oral supplements like gulathione and collagen and how safe are they? It’s so difficult to find a dermatologist who speaks of the truth instead of sell their products :(
I can't speak for others, but I totally feel for your journey. Be careful, though. This is some real shit. YT commenters (and hosts!) can be vicious. It's not like IG, where you can ban comment words. Few on this particular medium want constructive criticism. Hosts don't like to hear honest feedback. I have psoriasis, and it is so painful and ostracizing. It's just this medium. It is too personal on so many levels. Don't do YT.
I'm an RN, and I suffer so much from scratching. I spend so much time and money to find solutions to not scar myself permanently on my neck and face, as I have on my legs. It feels so good to scratch. TMI. Please don't leave a nasty response - I am just responding as a response. Peace.
Sorry, I'm studying medicine, but not in the US so I don't really know how it works. From what I understood when you did your research in telemedicine you were still in med school, how does it work? They send you to another school to do a research as part of the program?
It's really my dream to become a dermatologist and I cannot wait to become one, I do have a question, how were you able to afford medical school ? It's just so expensive and that's the one thing that keeps pushing me further from my dream...
Me too! Unfortunately for us, we can’t... However, I am creating a future reference playlist for my daughter. Dr Idriss is inspiring both intellectually and personably . A genuine example of character, endurance, achievement, integrity, etc . I could keep adding.... Exposing young minds to accomplished and wholesome role models is something I believe to be of value. Parenting is an emotional battle. Every parent has a responsibility to arm youngsters with as many tools possible, that they themselves can develop and grow into well rounded adults. Nothing is foolproof but, we can try our best. ❤️🙏🏻
I met you when Rosshanna recommended you in his videos, I have a hormonal acne problem, you know what routine or products are recommended. Dermatologists sometimes become very expensive, thanks greetings from Colombia💕💕😘
Hi! I’m currently in my gap year, I’m a first gen student and a little lost in the entire application and competitiveness component, how can we get into research at other universities? Thank you!
I have a question that totally off topic but what face serum do you use at bedtime? You used it during your routine video and you never said what the serum was and I have been trying to figure it out LOL
I’m a child psychiatrist and listening to your story still inspires me. Keep doing what you do you are a great human!
❤️
I love how you incorporated dermatology and mental health by looking into burden of illness! Great story! Would love to hear the story behind your husband haha
Agreed!!

“Get your ass off your fucking couch!” Yes! 👏🏻 loved these two pillow talks! Thanks for sharing! 💛

'I am good when i am on my own' AYYYYYY! 'Big classrooms distract me' YESS!! good to hear that...feels so comforting 🙈
Medical school is hard! Congratulations to you and your parents!
will always love your HONESTY... thanks for coming to Puerto Rico! Honesty remember?!
I love your story and your personality even more! I am aspiring to be a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, so you gave amazing insight and perspective!
Life changing story Dr. Shereene. You would be a really great dermatology professor 🤍 more power dr
Love your honesty, thank you for sharing your story! I totally agree everything happens for a reason and “get off your ass” is excellent advice!
Your story is expiring and can help others not to give up!❤❤❤
Thank you for posting again !!!! Keep it coming , we love you 😍
Shereene, you are so beautiful, so inspiring, so incredibly sincere! Thank you for sharing, for all your help, for being such an amazing human being full of light and life (and a bit of magic)

You went to school at GW? I worked at a hospital (outside of DC) that had GW and Georgetown medical students!
Small world!
In other countries, people start medical school at 18, and some even start at 17!
So true...balance doesn’t exist!! 😂😂 More please!!! ❤️❤️
Oh, my goodness - the Umbrella Analogy rocks!. My 16 y/o daughter wants to be a Neurosurgeon: I will have to share this with her!.

You are simply amazing! Thank you for sharing this.

Super fun story - inspiring & great lessons. Who makes this gorgeous sweater btw? Love the color.
Getting my arse off the couch!!!
Hiya, thankyou ☺🙏🙏🙏👏👏👍👍
Question- whilst in medical school, did you work? How did you study and work?. For me, I am struggling with work, life and study balance.
im from india and when i joined med school i was 17 !!
💖
It's really my dream to become a dermatologist and I cannot wait to become one, I do have a question, how were you able to afford medical school ? It's just so expensive and that's the one thing that keeps pushing me further from my dream...
I wish I'd seen this video when I was 16. But then we didn't even have the internet when I was 16 :-)
Me too! Unfortunately for us, we can’t... However, I am creating a future reference playlist for my daughter.

Make a video on tips on how you studied pls
Great story!
Wow, very motivational 👍👍
Sitting here listening to your story in a pair of scrub pants and top 😷
Thank you!!!!
😭😭😭😭
Hi! Just stumbled across this! Can you do a video on BA/MD programs and derm?
Your so pretty
Why did you decide to apply to derm instead of plastics like you originally intended? I'm in the same boat, now leaning to derm.
Same question. Though for me some days its derm other days its plastic 😬
Very inspiring!
I met you when Rosshanna recommended you in his videos, I have a hormonal acne problem, you know what routine or products are recommended. Dermatologists sometimes become very expensive, thanks greetings from Colombia💕💕😘
do you know if the earth harbor helios serum is ok to use its quite expensive and i am skeptical of clean beauty
107 residency programs..lets say on average application fee 200. You're saying you spent approx $21,000 on apps?
She is a go getter indeed! 😂
Did you work in college as well how many loans did u have to take thanks
That's divine intervention. That's not luck or mercury retrograde.
Did not know you had to go to med school to become a dermatologist.... 😭 guess I’ll be a facialist then :/
I'm going to dermatology school so I can learn how to do hair and makeup.
Mad Simple you mean cosmetology school?
