I planted another 20 bare root roses yesterday in heavy clay soil. I didn't add any organic material since I don't want to create a hole where water collects. I prefer fertilizing from the top both with organic material and standard 12-6-12 NPK, which also contains all micro nutritions. They will flow down with the water and most will attach to the clay with ion exchange waiting for the rose to pick it up with another ion exchange. Rose roots love clay and will go deep to find it but I'm sure it will tolerate the cow manure underway wondering how the cow managed that. If it's too deep, outside the reach of enough oxygen it could give you problems with excessive anaerobic activity :-)
So here it what I do: Dig a hole with the smallest possible diameter, that will hold the rose roots. Only one foot deep. If you find heavy clay, you are in luck. Cut the roots with an old pair of scissors so they don't bend in the hole. Fill back the soil in the same order, you took it up. Don't disturb the balance. Different things happens in different depths and the rose is made for it. Water it. You can add normal house plant liquid fertilizer for the first time which should attach to they clay and wait for the rose roots as they dick deeper over time.
What a nice soil you have! I dont dare to plant the English roses in our clay soil. Only in pots… cant you please make a video, an update on how they are now?
@@OlgaCarmody thank you! I’m just starting out cultivating my roses so apologies for my dumb question! I want them to be healthy and happy as yours are. ❤️
I love David Austen roses. I have a few and they do not disappoint. Thanks for showing us how to plant a rose.
You are so welcome
I was waiting for you to dig up a skeletal hand. Can’t deny I’m a little disappointed! Just kidding, Olga. Love your videos. Thank you.
You are funny Allie! I like a good clean joke! Thank you for your supportive message!

Excellent demonstration on the proper way to plant these. I can’t wait for my Benjamin Britten and Scepter’d isle to arrive next year!
Thank you for watching! Me too, I can’t wait for my roses to arrive next spring! Just trying hard not to turn my garden into one big rose plantation.
@@OlgaCarmody 😂. It would still look beautiful. Happy growing!

Sure thing, I am going to do the tour of my spring garden and will talk about all my roses. Stay tuned!
Clay soil is actually high in nutrients you need to break it down by applying gypsum and organic matter.😊
Is this own root or graft? thank you for the videos! I love your beautiful garden, Olga!!
They are grafted.
On the website they have some own root too
Will cow manure not burn the roots? Or is this already decomposted one?
Decomposted by all means. Fresh thing will definitely kill your plants.

@@basiaszendrei1603 You are all good! Happy gardening!
Which rose did you plant?
The rose is Brother Cadfael by David Austin. Happy gardening!
