Captain America is a 15 Chapter 1944 Republic Black-and-White Serial Film based (loosely) on the comic book character Captain America. It was the last Republic serial made about a superhero. It also has the distinction of being the most expensive serial that Republic ever made.

What's funny is, the creator of Cap (Jack "King" Kirby) was actually out fighting WWII while his creation was showing in theaters in the States...maybe even in some rear echelon camps in France:
(Kirby) - "Hey, mac - I created that character on the screen there.."
(other soldier) - "Yeah, yeah....and your wife's Veronica Lake, sure, sure...."
Kirby never saw the serial. He didn't want to. He was never offered a dime for use of the character.

I was born in 1945 on a US Army Air Corp Base, called Drew Field, now the site of Tampa International Airport, Tampa Florida. Dad was in Air Corps PT boats in Air Sea rescue, and anti- submarine patrols off Florida. Captain America along with the Tiger Women
( ReReleased as 'Perials of the Darkest Jungle") were rereleased in 1951. I saw both. Linda Stirling of the Tiger women was known as the "Queen Of the Serials" and I feel in love with her at 5 going on 6 years old. While today one must in many cases laugh, but when a very young boy as I was sitting in a movie house before a very large screen, these serials and movies had a very lasting and incredible influence. Also I saw some of the famous Hollywood Studio System A-Pictures, such as Treasure Of the Sierra Madre, with Humphry Bogart 1948, Captain Horatio Hornblower 1951, with Gregory Peck, Flying Tigers with John Wayne,"rereleased from 1942 in 1947 or 48, Quo Vadis, Ivenhoe, and many others.
When Captain America would be riding his motorcycle at each beginning all the kids in the theator would cheer. These were the last years of the Republic Pictures serials, and the old cowboy movies on Saturdays with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne,Johnny Mac Brown, Hopalong Cassidy, Wild Bill Elliot, who also also played with then child star "Bobby Blake", in the Red Rider and Little Beaver series of movies, Rex Allen, Allen "Rocky" Lane who played Allen Saunders in the "Tiger Women", Charles Starrett, Lash La Rue, "who I actually met", and others. This era ended in 1954 just a year after the Korean War Armestests. TV was now coming to almost all in American society by then. This era lasted from mid 1930's to around 1954, almost 20 years. I feel fotunate to have gotten in on the tail end of that era. My brother, born in late 1949 has absolutely no memories of seeing these great movies and serials in the movies on a large screen.

Holy Molly! How come i never knew about this until now. This was probably filmed during that time i was on a bloody mess at Normandy. Anyways just happy knowing that i was very much known back then and popularized despite having started off my military career on rough times. Something tells me that i'm gonna love this sooo much!!!

Marvel Studios could bring Dick Purcell's version of Captain America back again as part of the MCU's Multiverse, but they have to bring in a different actor to play that version since every live-action Marvel films and television series is part of the MCU's Multiverse. They can pull off the Brandon Routh's Superman concept of how Routh's Superman is the same version as Christopher Reeve's Superman.

These videos make me miss the old Saturday Matinee's. Those were big days of movie watching with pretty much everyone I knew. Back then there was a greater sense of community, not just because of the values presented in serials like this, but because we actually saw these as a community in a theatre built by the community or at least the Federal Theatre Project. I feel bad for young people these days. All they have are computer games and crappy reality shows. They will never fully appreciate things like this. It was more than just entertainment. It was a community coming together.
+Lance Naylor I agree 100% but at the same time your generation laid the foundation for the amount of appreciation that is shown today for both Marvel and DC in a way that you couldnt imagine back in your day. Yes it is more about entertainment today but, we have your generation to thank with the utmost respect for that. What the entertainment industry is doing with comic books and how they have advanced technology wise wouldnt even be possible without that.

It might be argued that Grant Gardner was one of the replacement Captain Americas that took over the mantle from Steve Rogers after he disappeared while trying to defuse the flying bomb launched by Baron Zemo. The main evidence for this is the fact that the red and white stripes on his costume do not go all the way around Captain America's body.....just like the costume worn by the 1950's version of Captain America during his Anti-communist days, prior to being discovered and re-animated by the Avengers....

Prentiss Powell I think the more likely story, is that this was a one-off, and they couldn't get the complete rights to the character. Sorta like how that 1980s Punisher movie only had certain elements of the titular character right, due to a similar reason.
Prentiss Powell But in 1944 Steve Rogers was still alive and well, and active as Captain America. He didn't go into the ice and disappear until 1945.

Yes, Republic licensed the character for a serial but the guy who wrote this serial probably didn't know a damn thing about the comic or actually read an issue! The only thing that survived from the comics is the suit and even that was stripped down -- no wings, no shield!
Not everybody who writes a movie screenplay has actually bothered to read the source material. How many Bond films are actually straight adaptations of ANY of the Bond novels? Usually the only thing that survives half the time from print to screen is the title of the book! Everything else gets thrown out and they come up with new plots and characters!
Most of the live-action superhero films have pretty much been like this. The truest adaptations have generally been the animated spin-off series. The best ones were done by fans of the original comics!
Whenever they do a live-action adaptation of a comic, the filmmakers have generally wanted to "improve things" and make them "less silly." Nine times out of ten, the guys with that mentality are not fans of the comics. Does anybody actually believe Akiva Goldsman, Zach Snyder, or Joel Schumacher ever read comics let alone read much of anything?!?!?
The only major filmmakers I'm convinced (prior to the MCU being set up) were fans were Richard Donner (Superman the Movie) and Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man trilogy). Sure, there were compromises in their visions but the spirits of those characters were captured in their films.

You'd think with age of ultron coming out they'd release the old Cap Serial to DVD and Blu-Ray (given they gave DVD releases to the Batman and Superman Serials)

They've disowned this serial... It's basically public domain.
There probably isn't a copy of this serial in existence that's in great shape.
Republic was required by contract to destroy the master materials of some of its licensed films (Mandrake, The Phantom) but they weren't able to destroy all the release prints which is why those films still exist. But none of them are in fantastic shape so it's unlikely they'll get a high-grade Blu ray release simply because nothing exists in high-grade condition anymore. They'll be DVD-only, standard-definition only for most of these films because of their poor shape.
DC Comics/WB have also disowned the Batman serials because they're embarrassing to those companies. There's a line in the first Batman serial about the Japanese internment camps in the US that supported them. Funny thing is that Sony Pictures (Columbia) still owns those serials and they're owned by the Japanese!!! Sony HAS released the Batman serials at least three times now to capitalize on the character despite the World War II sentiments in the first serial. So yeah, those are the only major Batman productions that are not owned by WB/DC.
The Superman serials, on the other hand, ARE owned by WB/DC but they're nowhere near as embarrassing and poorly made as the Batman serials were.
The Captain America serial is a legal orphan, no longer owned by the studio that made it. They licensed the character for a limited time, and when that time ran out no one was reassigned a copyright to the content.
This is my restoration, which is available on DVD at the Serial Squadron, www.serialsquadron.com . It took about 3 months to restore it shot by shot from transfers of two 16mm prints.
The negative does exist in a film archive but they usually do not release material like this without proof of copyright ownership, and, since no one owns it, it's not likely to ever be released in a better version.
Aven. Watched Capt. Marvel and Death Kiss a few ago. Beautiful prints. Someone must have worked on them, Bet after 2yrs. Capt America and some other great serials are A quality now.

One urban legend that has grown out of this serial is that Dick Purcell (Captain America) died from a heart attack brown on by the stunt work he did in the film. He suffered a heart attack in the clubhouse after playing a round of golf.First of all, his stuntwork was done by Kenneth Turrell and Dale Van Sickle, both Republic stuntmen. Purcell was too stocky to even fit into that snug CM outfit. He probably was golfing on a hot day, lugging a heavy golf bag, and this probably casued it.

The character of Captain America was drastically differs from his comic book counterpart, and changed the character's true identity from Steve Rogers to District Attorney Grant Gardner.
To be fair this isn't even the only time the movie adaption would go with a different version of Cap (not talking falcon cap or US Agent either) as the 2 tv movies had his son taking the mantle

Republic bought the rights to the Captain America serial which included the right to make a few changes. In the comic strip, Steve Rogera was working undercover while servinfg in the Army. He had a young skidekci called Buddy/ In the serial, the name was changed to Grant Gardner, the District Attorney.
Correct. However, his sidekick was actually named "Bucky" -- a teenager & the "mascot" of the camp where he was stationed (unlike the "Bucky" of the MCU movies).

The film serial is public domain, so anyone can upload it to RUclips. And since Grant Gardner was introduced in this serial, he's public domain too as long as you don't call him Captain America.

Cant remember just where i read it, perhaps an issue of the kirby collector.Anyway,I read that marvels owner, Goodman, wanted to get one of his characters in film SO badly, that he didn't charge a penny, for republic to make this serial.
That is nearly true. Republic wanted to replace Mister Scarlet, who the serial was written for, and apparently the agreement was made that Captain America could be used instead if Republic would buy a few ads in Goodman's comics. So that is what was done. It all may have been agreed upon in one phone call.

The Cap Costume from the solo movie was more a soldier uniform than a superhero costume! gotta think, it was world war 2 at that time! but in the avengers movie, steve rogers was no longer a soldier but a part of a superhero society so they made him look more like a superhero! i thought it looked fantastic!

Ironically the actor who played Cap passed away from a heart attack while playing golf almost immediately after finishing this serial.

It was somewhat of a joke because I felt that if they'd kept Evan's costume closer to the comic design, it would've looked much better. Instead, the costume in Avengers looked much more like the shlocky outfit from this old movie serial!

+Commander_Ninja it's likely this was supposed to star a different hero and Captain America was added at the last second after thry'd already established his secret identity, thus no shield and no Bucky.
This movie actually exists in the Marvel Comics Universe, except instead of Republic Pictures in the comics it was made by Democratic Pictures. Captain America once faced the villain in this serial in an issue of his comic while touring the studio.

Actually, this is a pretty good serial. After all, Lionel Atwill is the bad guy and he's outacting every other member of the cast, so you can't go wrong with that.
Of course, as a Captain America adaptation, it's utter crap, but it's still better than Big McLarge Huge's TV movies in the 1970s....
