  • Terry Stewart (tezza) talks about a computer in his classic computer collection: The iMac G3 (Bondi Blue). This video replaces an earlier copy which had very poor audio. See the View Numbers and Comments before the refresh at www.classic-computers.org.nz/...

My own first personal computer - after struggling with my Dad's Windows 95 PC (it never worked) and a borrowed Amstrad PCW - was an iMacDV. I loved it. A computer that just worked, straight out of the box. No more failures. An utter revelation to me!

It was very different from an MS 95/98 Wintel machine, that's for sure!

I remember seeing those for the first time being used in a mall store as their register in the early 2000s. I was amazed, as my most recent Mac experience at that point was a IIci. I wish today I had gotten one, but our company at the time got a discount from Dell. 😔 I saw one of these recently at a used computer store and was so tempted to pick it up.

Do so, these are starting to go up in value.

I wanted to, but it was $300, too big to hide and too hard to explain to my wife. 😅

@@mamoruisamu1 $300? My $5 purchase 10 years ago is looking like a very, very good deal.

@@cygil1 The problem is they are very heavy and very fragile. So buying them off of ebay is an expensive endeavor likely to end with a box of broken glass and cracked plastic being delivered to your door.
Frankly, there are better ways to enjoy classic mac stuff. A quick silver dual G4 will work better. Alternatively, if you can find the 700mhz eMac, even better. It is one of the fastest classic macs (it can directly boot os 9)ever made and still has the iMac form factor, though without the trinitron of the iMac. I'm surprised this wasn't brought up in the video. It is one of the few good points of the early iMac.

Ah yes used to write software for these for a living when they first came out. Some 25 years ago.

Ah yes, the hockey puck mouse, as mentioned by David Murray (also known as the 8-bit Guy). Nice video Terry!

I wanted one of these at the time but sadly we had a horrible beige Win98 box

All style, no substance. A style particularly suitable for a consumer market. No procurement dept ever bought a computer for its looks. This computer just was not competitive with PCs. The trinitron screen is nice though. I have a later revision iMac (same form factor) plus an eMac which I use for arcade gaming with MAME. The early 80s arcade games look so good on the trinitron iMac. Later games have to played on the eMac, which while CRT based, is not a trinitron.
There was a lot of shenanigans around the iMac when it first came on the market. People were signing 5-7 year contracts for ISP dial up at an inflated price of 29.99/month to get "low cost" financing with most of the price of the iMac subsidized. Imagine still using a bondi blue iMac with 33.6 internet in 2006!
