- There are many reasons to still own and use a computer from the late 90s / early 2000s. Our reason was simple, the GAMES. Find out the story of why I chose to purchase this computer in the year of our Rudd 2024.

This is lovely! I've been given a G3 by my aunt, but I haven't been able to boot it up and get it working yet since it lacks a hard drive. Hopefully I'll find success in playing games on it like you and your wife have!
I hope you do too! I'm grateful people are still out there supplying parts for old hardware. With enough digging, you can find almost anything, an entire computer in my case 😅
Loved these machines for years grew up in school with them, The cheapest Route for a hard drive is a $9 SATA to IDE Adapter, & a cheap 120gb SSD Works excellent! If it's a slot loader it can also boot off USB! For just old macgames Macintosh garden is the place to go 👍 The imac g3's is the one I keep coming back to and keep as my main retro machine, At this age, they are experiencing speaker problems due to the Foam rotting away, But after some research, the enclosure opens easy And drop in replacements are only $15 Same dimensions as stock and connections, Just did mine took a half hour.
I got a G3 completely randomly this year - a complete G3 DV SE (mouse, keyboard, and original power cord but no box or manuals) was at a local rummage sale and I grabbed it for $50. Never owned a Mac before. It took a lot of work - needed a SSD to replace the busted original hard drive, needed new speaker drivers, and needed the brightness adjusted with a screwdriver. But with that done I love what I can do with it - with OS 9.2 it can run anything from the original mac until the early 00s. And with that integrated CRT it's in many ways easier than dealing with a retro PC for CRT gaming. And the chicks love it (chicks being defined as women in their 30s who had one as a kid).
the first time i saw the imac g3 was at compusa. i think it was $1200 at the time. i thought it was cool because it was a all-in-one computer & i like the design. Years later i found a imac g3 blueberry at goodwill for $25. i damn near had a heart attack. so, i grabbed it & went up front & bought it & i still have it today
Truly a feel good story if there ever was one 😊
Normality was my first "Holy crap, this game is criminally unknown/underrated" game (or was at the time). 7th guest was my first "WOW CD TECHNOLOGY HOW COOL!" game... and the original Baldur's Gate came out on my birthday and was the first re-imagining of what D&D games could look like (using 2nd edition rules, no less! I knew those rules!). Thankfully, I can play them all, with mostly more ease than back in the day. 7th Guest fought me tooth and nail to actually cooperate with the sound card... Resource conflict hell.
HANK AZARIA MENTIONED. Great video dude!
RUclips is easy, just mention Hank Azaria! 😅 Thanks dude 😎
I got an iMac G3 last year and made it my retro Bungie machine
I've got one of those in my basement still. Either a blue one or a grey one (I had both). Upgraded the RAM and the HD in it. Now it just sits at the back of a shelf collecting dust. I was debating on turning it in to a fishbowl...
That's awesome. You've got a piece of history!
I found a G3 abandoned at a transfer station (town dump) and the attendant let me take it home. I plugged it in and it started booting, then there was a pop. I believe all I need to do is replace the PSU. I also found a 1987 Macintosh Plus. It's nuts that people just throw away classic tech. The attendant says people throw out working consoles and games all the time too, he even rescued a working N64 with 50 games.... wtf....
People often treat old tech as useless when there is such value to be had. Old tech, if maintained properly, can continue functioning for years. So much newer tech has that planned obsolescence; so what if it doesn't work in 10 years? they'll just buy a new one! 😒
@@vampirestrike_ can confirm, been a sysadmin since 2009. I have a Dell Latitude CPx in my closet from 1999 or 2000 I can get working again today. But the modern Dells and Lenovos I support start breaking down after 2-3 years and are not user serviceable. The Thinkbooks especially, the keyboard is built into the chassis as one oiece, you need to remove the motherboard and remove half the chassis just to swap the keyboard.
Meanwhile I remember early 00s laptops and MacBooks the keyboard was one unit and very easy to replace
this vid was actually really great, just gonna leave a comment here so the youtube algorithm likes you more :p
Thank you so much, very much appreciated! 👍
Awesome video, just got a DV Special Edition myself. It too has Mac OS X… what’s the cheap way to put OS 9 on it? Burn an ISO onto a CD? Or do I have to eBay all this stuff? (By that I mean the games as well. Have StarCraft and WarCraft II… don’t think my Monkey Island works on Mac.
Would have done some homework, but this thing just fell into my lap, wasn’t planning to own one. Pretty neat, and lucky.
Thanks! That's awesome. Macintosh Repository will be your friend. There are many other sites dedicated to keeping OS 9 alive.
I want to say that I found the latest 9.2.2 release and loaded it into the system files via USB, then told OS X to boot into 9.2.2 instead. Good luck!
I want to get a mini g3 just for the marathon trilogy.
That would be awesome 😎
TONKA
This guy gets it!
rpcs3 can get bent. Great vid!
You are correct. And it's a modern marvel that it functions at all.
