Finally got around to playing this with three friends last week. As a big X-Wing player, I never really warmed up to STAW as I just thought it was an inferior version of X-Wing and not really a very good representation of large starship combat. Alliance was just a blast, though, and I immediately bought a ton of stuff. A shame FFG never licensed Derksen's excellent AI system, but at least we get it here in Alliance. Our foursome is very experienced with XWM, and we found that we suffered worst when we treated the AI ships like bad X-Wing players. Just a really impressive and unpredictable system! Super fun and almost infinitely replayable. :)
at 22:18 on the offense, I would almost always take Target Lock or Battle Stations. I don't know if you went over Target Lock as I kind of skimmed through the first part (as I've played Attack Wing for years), but it basically gives you the same things as your Tactical Officer without needing to disable. Is that not a thing in Alliance? (I just got the game and haven't actually played this version yet, but I assumed it would still be there as there are target lock tokens in the box).
Question !!! The game description says this is compatible with attack wing but is attack wing compatible with this ? I have a lot of attack wing can i use those ships in this game ?
Yes the ships are absolutely compatible with this game. You can't use all of the weapon cards there are some instructions on what you can and can't use as certain cards would make the game to easy. Currently all of the 24th Century Federation Ships are compatible I believe.
We ordered the new federation ship pack and will finish the campaign later this year when we can use a Galaxy Class and Intrepid class ship! Glad we were able to help you out!
@@darrenmurphy480 I was thinking of scanning their "AI" card for the small jem Hadar ships and using an editor program to make AI cards for the battle cruiser and battleship. I imagine with a little creativity, you could make all sorts of custom missions and campaigns! I'm really looking forward to playing this with my kid
Such a simpleton wargame......the greatest and best Star Trek starship combat game ever was published over 40 years ago and is still in print.....Starfleet Battles!! ;-) This is what people today call a rules heavy game? Bah!

The game is so good we haven’t played in awhile but Julie has me keeping an eye out for Voyager so that we can get it back to the table!
@@DiceandDragonsSame. We have a buddy who has one and he lords it over us...

Will have to review the rules it’s been quite a awhile since we have played the game. Thanks for the suggestion we will use it next time we play.
Great review as always !
Thanks

@@UniformedDisorder I got the game since and I love it. Your right you could homebrew a lot with it but I'd love some official explanations
How can you play this game on a mat without gridlines or boxes? Don't you need that?
You don’t need a grid as you move using the range finders which will tell you how far you can move and what distance they represent.
@@DiceandDragons I see. Thanks.
