I literally sat through the ENTIRE video thinking you were @TheTopher, being extremely confused about how you said you were born in '98. I was like: 👀?! but! that's a high compliment because I love his videos & your energy & recording style is very similar to his. I appreciated the history of Mazdaspeed, as well
most underated car brand that exists. Someday people that arent car enthusiasts will wake up to mazda I hope. And i hope when mazda gets enough burn money they redevelope the midsize or even large sedan with a turbo inline 6.
The 3rd gen 3 was one of the cars I think of as foundational to my automotive passion to be honest. I was smitten at how good it looked, and it was honestly thrilling just to read about what a hero of a driver it was in all the magazines and websites. It was amazing to me that a small, yet might company like Mazda that had just gone independent could engineer such a brilliant-to-drive compact car that looked like a million bucks and had a segment-top interior and yet price it competitively with the competition when Toyota and Honda had been phoning in the Corolla and Civic. Fast forward to when the fourth gen came out, and I was looking for a fun stick shift compact (not necessarily hot) hatch. I ultimately decided on a manual NA FWD version of one of these 4th gen hatches, even though it isn’t quite the driver the 3rd gen was. I wanted something NA instead of, say, a Civic or a Hyundai/Kia with a 1.5/1.6T, and I preferred this overall to a Corolla hatch (for primarily interior and torquiness of the 2.5 vs. the Toyota 2.0). Though I’ve been very happy with it, don’t get me wrong, I’m a little saddened at this whole premium/luxury shift happening with Mazda, and that was the primary reason I decided against a Turbo hatch. If I wanted something with this much power, I’d just get a hot hatch personally, and as aware as I am that Mazda’s a small company with limited resources, I do think they missed an opportunity here to make this a hotter hatch. That’s not to say I think this needs to rival, say, the Veloster N and Civic Type R, but I think this could have been an amazing AWD Japanese GTI. And here’s why I say that - think about what happened last time Mazda offered a quality, reliable, Japanese interpretation of a fun, sporty, European icon. That recipe sound familiar??? Sure, that was 30 years ago now, but with how controversial the Mk8 GTI has been, I still think that really could have been a hit. And I think Mazda is putting a little too much pressure on themselves to grow up to be honest. They can have the luxurious, premium amenities AND the fun, sporty character AT THE SAME TIME! It’s been done before (that’s the whole thesis statement of the GTI, is it not?), and I think they could have achieved that balance in a little bit more of an enthusiast-friendly way with these Turbo 3’s. But then again, there are aftermarket companies like Corksport up here in the PNW that can help with that, if that’s what you’re after. Let’s see what the RWD models bring. Ok thanks for coming to my Mazda owner TedTalk.
One of these, white with red interior, would be my perfect car....... if the rear suspension was different. I love the small size (as far as I'm concerned, the larger the car the worse, ACURA), it blew me away in comfort when I test drove it (wasn't actually considering it before that), and it perfectly balances having all the quality with none of the needless german "this exists to add nothing but another thing to break". Not to mention, probably my favorite gauge cluster I've ever used. But it's so hard of a sell when you can walk over to the Civic hatch or soon to be Integra and be so similar with actual independent rear. I'm waiting on the Integra, and if it can come close to this in comfort, I think that has to be the choice.
Polar bears should be the least of the problems considered when it comes to climate change. Im personally driving the eskyactiv x Mazda 3. Their petrol compression ignition innovation with 186 hp. Drives like a naturally aspirated engine. Really nice and even though I live in the middle of a city Im getting 42 mpg.
It won't shift for you if in Sport mode + Traction OFF. Personaly i always keep it in automatic and use the Torque. (I own this car btw, i just subed!)
Indeed, as Car & Driver achieved their best 0-60 times by launching with traction control off, power braking to 4K RPM, and manual shifting at about 5200 rpm.
I'm a bit of a luddite as I still have my Mazda Protege and use it as a daily plus it's still in pretty good order with no rust, but the best bit is I also still have my 2012 3MPS ( speed here in Europe) and it's immaculate. I love what you're driving about in but it's not available in Europe, we get the latest skyX but even though it's got very clever engine technology, it's definitely not a Speed. I appreciate the reasons that Mazda has gone to, manufacturing more upmarket cars but I wish they would make another speed version before everyone goes electric.
I am considering taking a look at the new CX-50 to replace my 2011 BMW 335i xdrive. I love the ultimate driving machine too much, even after 3 years of ownership and countless repairs. N55 is a gem
I think they’ve cancelled the inline 6 program for the cars and the new sedan that was supposed to be a rear-wheel drive iteration of the Mazda 6. Apparently they’ll only be focusing on SUVs according to a MAZDA exec from Europe. So Mazda can grow up without me. I’ve owned generations of Mazda3s all geared around that ZOOM-ZOOM vision that I completely bought into. It’s all going away now and the future is bleak for this brand in terms of fun and performance. It’s heartbreaking given all of the passion and loyalty I’ve given to Mazda over some 20+ years, and hard to believe that I’ll have to walk away.
I personally am not disappointed that the car won't rev past 6K RPM. Especially since the car have so much low- mid level grunt, and that's where you want it for a daily driver. That's usable power. Absolutely no need to rev this thing out to Red Line cuz the power does drop off around 6K RPM which is not a bad thing. If you want the car that has great low end torque and also keeps pulling harder all the way to Red Line then there are lots of options out there (BMW m240i for example), but you're going to pay a lot more money , or you can pay the same amount of money as this but have to always keep it on boil way up top like a gr86/BRZ S2K or Miatas etc. However Civic Type R does give you around 300-lb feat of Max torque really low down around 1500 RPM, while still pulling really hard all the way to Red Line for under 40K. That is if you can find one, and actually find one for MSRP. That's one of the exceptions of a car that gives you both really strong low-end grunt and willingness to want to rev out for an affordable price. For a daily driver, I would much rather a car that gives me that usable power down low for easy passing maneuvers and daily drivability, then power you have to go searching for way up at the top.
It's sad that Mazda is not going towards the performance side of the market anymore. They think that what they currently have work so they don't want to change that formula but I think they're reading their data wrong. Their cars aren't selling because of their 2.0, 2.5 and 2.5 turbo. Their cars are selling because of the exterior design and interior design/luxury feel that they started about 6-7 years ago. It's getting somewhat outdated but you can still tell that the design is outstanding and doesn't look old. If they would just make a fast car with good exterior styling and nice interior designs/materials, I bet it would still sell like crazy. They should really keep their SUV lineup, because that's what's popular here in the US, but for their smaller Mazda 3 and Miata, they should definitely just throw a ton of power into it. A more responsive 8 speed ZF-8 like everyone else is doing would probably help. The 6 speed automatic is very old and sluggish and even if the car made 700hp, that transmission is still going to ruin the car. Then for the Miata, make a more robust manual transmission; the ones in the ND1 and ND2 are glass.
mazda to me makes cars that are reliable and look really good, the con of these cars which unfortunately to me is a deal breaker is the MPG/fuel tank size, so the mpg is about 25-27 realistically which gives you a range of 350miles, thats pretty dang low for 2022 im really not trying to be going to gas stations thats much, a jetta gets easily 36mpg and people get 45+ on the highway but il just say 35mpg with a 13.2gas tank thats 460miles of range, thats 110miles more then the mazda, thats just simply way to much of a difference its like 1/3 of the range that you just get extra, the car otherwise though is great and very good looking
Just posting this where Mazda fans are...if your in northwest Indiana area avoid art hill for anything take the extra 40 minutes to drive to valpo and give Kennedy Mazda your business. I have purchased multiple vehicles and b/n me and my family have purchased vehicles for 30 years from them and they treated me like shit. GM of Mazda literally asked me to show him how much of a man I am lol 🥱🥱 super professional

You can redline it if traction control mode is turned off & in sport mode. It's kind of a weird combo you have to do... but at least it's there.

2.5 NA will redline and double downshift if you tap the gas. I do own it, and it really can be a fun car
I bought a 2022 CX-5 Carbon Edition in January and I LOVE IT.

would be a good idea if you could show the parking camera (reverse, forward, lines & other functions) when you begin driving.
You can find that over on his main channel review of this car at TheTopher. This seems to be his personal channel.
You could be a shoe in for Tyler Hoover’s little brother. Good analysis sir. 🙏
Don't go past the kickdown switch on the throttle pedal and it will hold a gear.

If you're running 93 octane it's 250 HP and 320 pd-ft.... not 310. Just clarifying
Will Mazda ever bring the Skyactiv X to the United States?
Related to TheTopher? I’m so confused
Turn off traction to not have it shift for you.
It's definitely a touch screen but only if you're riding below their limit for safety reasons
Are you masquerading as "thetopher"? I can't tell.
Nah, he literally works for topher
vtec yo
Not sure if that's sarcasm but RUclips videos show the previous gen Si gets slaughtered by this car.
Vtec is trash
I wonder why their stock price is in the toilet
Unfortunately this drives like a boat.
