The light weight, double wishbone suspension, bare bones interior and 1.4 liter 90hp engine was a blessing to drive. Quick enough in town and super low fuel consumption and it was still sounding great for such a small engine and was so easy to repair
I would feel worried in a 90 hp car because I drive in the county. My Chevy cobalt has 180 hp and doesn’t feel fast. I don’t have trouble merging on highways but I couldn’t imagine having half the power 😬
Engine smaller than 1.5L when AC compressor on it use too much power make it not fuel efficient. That's why turbo 3 cylinders suck in hot climates area.
Heck yes, cheap cars. Do more of these, Chris! Drive lower trim cars, do sound system tests, etc. Show the world what under 30k will get you! We need more base trim videos.
What's sad is, this car serves 99.9 percent of people's needs, Yet they still choose huge ass SUV's/Pickups which they can barely afford and wont use the full potential. If people keep buying these small cheap cars, manufacturers will have an incentive to go back to making regular cheap cars. Maintenance and insurance on these car is dirt cheap too!
because its too easy to buy big inefficient cars to satisfy vanity in the US. make gas more expensive, tax cars based on size, increase the qualifications needed to get a license, etc, as it is in the rest of the world, and watch Americans flock to small cars again
So true man; there's a bus driver that I know that used to own a Ford F-150 automatic pickup truck for a while before she sold it. She currently drives an Honda Civic with a standard transmission for her personal use. When she is a bus driver though, she has driven standard coach buses (that was how I first met her in) and articulated coach buses (she started with those besides standard coach buses when she first became a bus driver in Manhattan).
Maybe we like the FREEDOM to buy a vehicle we WANT instead of what's some Washington jerks and others think we need. Freedom is becoming just a novel idea here in the United States.

I like this review. As one who became an adult in the 2000s, I still think $18,000+ for a brand new car at absolute base level is a bit insane, BUT....here are a few things I can see: 1. The new generation of car thieves can't drive manuals, so a manual transmission is, in many cases, more secure than the security system itself. Add in your own hidden manual kill switch to the fuel system, and the car is practically unstealable unless they decide to tow it away. 2. Many cars are stolen via "carhacking" instead of carjacking. Those really nice sophisticated systems that make the car super convenient for the driver, such as remote start, drive-by-wire, electric parking brake, also make it easier for hackers with the proper hardware and software to steal it. Again, a DIY hidden kill switch can heavily mitigate these. 3. While you're probably not going to be doing any pulls in this thing, this car is basially a stealth plane for cops. Not loud, not flashy, and not extremely fast, you can rest assured that pending fire, a leg dangling from the trunk, or gunshots, you can ride peacefully from Point A to Point B without getting pulled over unless your registration is expired. 4. Manual transmission almost guarantees that, so long as you maintain the fluid at proper intervals, you're still gonna be driving peaceably to your destination after 100K, 150K, and 200K miles while all the CVT owners are paying for their second transmission rebuild out of pocket...or the people who bought the car used. 5. Not fast or thrusty almost guarantees wife approval with most wives. 6. Manual transmission almost guarantees no one will ever borrow your car or sit in the driver seat. 7. Analog primary controls means the car itself is not beholden to updates that interfere with driving and climate controls. Infotainment, maybe. 8. Manual parking brake means car will not get stuck or roll in the rare instance that an electric one would short out. Overall, if you like to stay low-key, a decent option for a new car.
Absolute facts. These things fly off the lot. I sell Nissan and while the normal Versas last a couple weeks when they come in. When we get a manual, its usually already got a deposit on it before it even gets out of PDI
The features that come in cheap / base trim cars are today are truly incredible. We're looking at airbags, back-up cameras, etc. Of course, these are now federally mandated, but tt wasn't too long ago when things like a radio and AC were options.
I am so glad that we no longer have to sacrifice safety features when buying a cheap car. Everything has ABS, traction control, stability control, front and side airbags, backup camera, etc.
I had a Mazda that didn't have power steering, cruise control or ABS and it didn't even have a passenger side mirror. LOL. The only option it had was A/C.
I have owned over 20 cars in my lifetime, everything from a hi-po Corvette, Fiat 128, 4 Jeeps, Lincolns, Austin Martin and a bunch more and a few years back my Aunt quit driving and gave me a 2009 Nissan Versa with only 25K miles. I was going to sell it but after driving it for a few weeks I actually become fond of it. It doesn’t try to be anything but a well built, economical and practical ride. I will probably keep it forever even if I buy something else to pull an RV. It has bonded with me and I can’t give a better compliment than that. Well done Nissan, well done! Very nice video.
Same here. I have a Chevy Corvette C7 MT, a Cadillac CTS, Chevy Tahoe, and a heavily modified Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Inherited an almost no miles totally base Plymouth Neon from my deceased aunt. That thing is as reliable as sunrise, and is probably my favorite due to its inherent goodness, simplicity, and honesty.
As a lot of the comments have said, don't know what it is about the concept of a cheap and base no nonsense economy car, but I just really want to have one. The perfect incognito car that costs next to nothing to own and you can just thrash it all day long
It's called the Mitsubishi Mirage and everyone hates them for some reason. I have the sedan version with a 5 speed and it's fantastic. Slow as molasses, but it's roomy for such a small car, has all the amenities I need, and gets 40+mpg on the interstate (and over 50 on slower highways.)
This is a car that you can put your foot down in and know you’re not gonna get pulled over any time soon 😂 Edit: what I meant is not just about speed. It’s about exhaust sound and appearance too.
Would finance this car 10/10. Manual transmission, steelies, manual hand brake, cloth seats, and what looks like good ol' port injection instead of direct injection. I can see this car being driven 20+ years.
yeah, easily. This 1.6 hr16de engine can run for decades, in far-eastern Russian town Vladivostok, I've seen a taxi-4 speed AT Nissan NV200 with the same engine in, with 642000 kilometers (~400k miles) on odometer, it was still running ice cold strong. He didn't change the engine or transmission
@@cormaro13 buddy every car from the last 5 years that doesn't have 100k miles is either $30,000 or a cheap piece of crap. Not everyone has a decent down payment to put down, and the bank is definitely not going to approve a loan for a 2004 Corolla. I test drove one last year: honestly, it was a blast. It reminded me of driving when I was a teenager. So fun to wring the gears out not even going that fast. It’s a throwback. I almost bought one. Went with a civic sport hatch 6spd instead.
Good job, Nissan. There is something to be said for inexpensive basic transportation. This is pretty much the car that everyone young drove in the 80's and 90's. A formula that more manufacturers need to revisit.
FINALLLY someone reviews this. theres a youtuber who literally his whole channel is about this car with the 5 speed and always wanted a bigger youtuber opinion on the car.
I bought this car, 2024 as well. First manual car, first car ever in my name. Great vehicle, basic as can be but I am enjoying it almost 1k miles. Only cons i've seen... If you rush reverse gear after just stopping there's a lack of power where you'll have to put it in neutral and try again. Similar problem if you stall. The "Hill-Assist" is a 50/50 sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Those were my main issues with this vehicle but other than that I love it no problems so far.
I also bought this car 7700 miles. It is not my first manual and I hate the hill assist. It hold you via the brake pressure instead of in the transmission like others. So sometimes I go to give it gas, and I can fill the brakes holding me in place while i'm trying to move forward.
@@kelvinervin9344 That is correct! The other day I was on a hill. And it actually held me still, I was giving it gas releasing clutch. And I’m like ? I’m not moving ? I release clutch a tiny bit more and it stalled 😂 Also I realized that too! If you press on the brake really hard while stopped it’s more likely to hold you. But even then! Sometimes it doesn’t work.

So i hurried up and filmed the black one before it could sell too. Congrats on the purchase! Would love to know what it’s like to own one long term. I think you made a good choice.

I love so much about this car. Buttons switches knobs zero gimmickry. "It's just good" "reminds me of my 90's probe" yes exactly! 90's goodness in 2024 :) love it Thank you for giving it a decent look!
It's strange how appealing it is to have a barebones car like this. I have a MK8 GTI and I'm jealous of how simple and easy this car seems to be. If I had a second car, this would probably be it. Reminds me of my 2011 fiesta, which also had a 1.6l and only 122 hp. Simpler times.
I have 2017 GTI love the car, not sure why you would want to give it up. 2017 was not that complicated 6 speed manual and knobs for everything except entertainment. I'm kinda shocked at the mpg of the Nissan I thought you would bet a few miles better efficiency on it with it's 1.6l. On the GTI I get, what appears, to be better gas mileage and more power. I'm holding on to it until it explodes.

I used to work at a Nissan dealer and a fun fact about the pre face-lift 3rd gen Versas (2020-2022) is that they came with push button start as standard but obviously that got dropped for the 2023 model year onward
I bought a 2024 Nissan Versa, manual transmission, three months ago. So far, loving it. I chose the manual for two reasons: 1) I prefer a manual transmission, I've always chosen a manual whenever buying, new or used if I had the option. 2) Though Nissan has improved the CVT, and the Versa has historically had fewer problems with it due to lighter weight and lower power than other cars, I just wanted to avoid the potential problem. My understanding is that with regular transmission service, the CVT will hold up just fine, but I don't have to wonder. I also wanted to avoid a turbo charged 3 cylinder engine that so many manufacturers are going to. The tried and true, naturally aspirated 4 cylinder was more appealing. Plus, it has port injection - the better option. I recently took the Versa on a 1200 mile road trip. I was completely satisfied with the comfort of the ride, the handling on the freeway, the performance was adequate when traveling at, or near, the posted speed limits, and the gas mileage was fantastic. I have an over-all MPG average of 44.2 MPG. This economy was highlighted for me with every fill-up, usually between $25 and $35 when filling up from near empty. I'm very happy with my purchase, I hope to keep this car for many years, thus, I will do the required maintenance as scheduled or sooner. It is going in for Krown rust protection next week, well before Michigan's salt season begins. I really enjoy inexpensive, economy cars. My first new car, and my favorite, was a 1972 Pinto Runabout. Great car, ruined by unfair media and legal attacks. I've historically been a Ford customer, but they abandoned the economy market, thus they have lost my business. Thank you Nissan for keeping this segment alive with pretty good quality.
@@cormaro13 Or refuse to waste my money making others wealthy. The Versa gets me from A to B very comfortably, I assume it will be very dependable long term, and I don't need to "prove" myself by buying stupid status symbols. You'd probably make fun of my modest house also. LOL

Nissan dealerships are dying to get these off the lot right now, and one spot I was at they had the 18k base model marked down to 15k!!!!!!!
Great review of this little jewel of a car . Keeping the speed limit on the highway and keeping the rpms mostly under 3500 my gas mileage on my 2024 Versa S is 32 city and 43 highway . Also relieved to see that it isn't my bad shifting causing the slight rpm hang lol .
I have the same car. You really need to use the complete rev range to really appreciate its power capabilities. It loves to rev all the way to redline. You guys should try to get a press car, so you guys can rev it out. This car sips fuel. which is the highlight for me despite any minor shortcomings. It’s a solid car. My other car is a Fiesta ST, the Versa complements it well.
Honestly I just enjoy the fact it can be had in a manual. Foot to the floor wherever you go and not getting pulled over would be pretty entertaining too haha
Man this vid is so nostalgic for me, i grew up with a 2012 versa and it was so awesome! We had the most equiped version with the 5 speed manual so it had just the right amount of confort creatures such as cruise control, power windows, heated winshield front and back, abs, keyless entry, push to start, etc. Some of the other positive aspects of it were: really espacious in the back, soo economical, mínimal rev hang, dead reliable and i love the gear whine you get in 1st and 2nd. I mean for the money. You can get it with a manual and easily can get it for a few thousand off that price depending on where you go. It’s not a bad little ride, no thrills but bulletproof a to b car. If you don’t have a long commute this isn’t that bad.
You guys should be grateful that you guys still get a 1.6 4 banger here in Thailand it is the same car but another name and it is 1.0 l turbo 3 cylinder you guys still get the 1.6l 4 cylinder fantastic
I'll take manual over CVT, key over fob, 4-cyl no turbo over 3-cyl w/turbo all day long. This little car well maintained and driven reasonably will last a long time. Not sure I'd want on a long trip, but as a daily commuter and grocery getter, for sure.
The engine on these is solid, its been widely used by Nissan for years and contrary to popular belief, it makes this a very reliable car. The sound system is pretty decent, the ride quality is decent, and the economy is also excellent for a car that isn't hybrid. It should have Carplay though, in other markets they come with that standard. Its inexpensive, comes with a warranty and has a 3rd pedal. Probably the last ''old-school'' econobox we will ever see, who knows?
My first car was a used 2010 Nissan versa with 150,000 miles on it lol. Its still going strong at almost 200,000 miles now in the hands of a family member, but I now drive a 23' Nissan Ariya. My little versa did me well tho!!

When in college, I bought my first car; a second hand.1971 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe with 1.6 liter DOHC engine. It had 104 BHP, a 5 speed manual, and was considered very sporty for the time just below the new Datsun 240 had just been introduced. Your Nissan is probably faster and quieter than my Fiat. In retro spect, I'm sure the seller of my car had turned back the odometer; a serious crime now. After about 20,000 miles, a piston burned right through to the valves. Brand new the Fiat sold for just over $2,500. The Z car sold for $3,500, a bargain, and a big collector item now. One never see a manual trans now. If you don't get stuck in a big traffic jam and pull your left thigh muscle, the Nissan gets the job done well. Your test hit all the spots. Good job.
nah that's how they are due to lack of torque at lower rpm and current modern ratios. Got a 21' Corolla manual and it does around the same, 6th gear only drops the revs by 500 or so too.
Absolutely perfect. I had a 2006 ford focus with a manual trans and I miss that car sooooo much. Loved how it drove and its size. Simple and pure car. Wish more automakers made cars like this again. All it needs is carplay.
See that's the problem, Americans calling this shitbox yet complain average cars in the US are getting expensive since they kept buying large excessive suvs. People forgot the civic was a "shitbox" also in the 90s while Arabs are calling their Mercedes benz shitbox compared to their supercars
Nissan gets a lot of flack, but I feel like the Versa is a solid choice for utility - back and forth commuting. I have a civic sport 6 speed and while I think that’s a step up, the versa with its five speed seems like it should last a good while, and serve its purpose reasonably. Nothing else touches this price point besides the mirage that you mentioned
I used to have a new platinum white pearl 2024 Civic sport hatch with the 6 speed manual. The gearbox was horrible, it either had bad quality or defective synchros. It shifted rough like a box of rocks specially 2nd and 3rd gears. I owned it for 9 months til 4.5K miles and could not live with a horrible driving experience. I ended up trading it for a 5MT 2024 Versa (plus some cash) and I do not regret my decision one bit.
I just built this car online the other day for fun and was surprised they offered a manual. Thanks for reviewing! I find myself watching more car content featuring attainable cars over ultra exclusive ones.
That new 6MT Canadian Sentra also offers a manual hand parking brake despite having disc brakes on the back. Most modern manual cars have an electronic parking brake which is an odd paring to a manual transmission.
2:58 I actually love this car because of my interest in cars. It’s just what you need and that’s all. Nothing less or more. And it’s a manual which is very cool! So few cars out there like this in America, which makes it’s super interesting to me. Like yeah I’ll have more fun in a Mustang GT or a Corolla GR, but damn this thing is neat to me!
Great review. It brought back memories. Makes me think of my first car - 1991 Ford Festiva ($9995 CDN and 63 HP, manual) and second car - 2000 Mazda Protege ($21,000 CDN and 121 HP, auto). They were basic cars and were inexpensive to maintain (the only thing I did to the Festiva was a new battery and brakes the last year I owned it). They were not powerful cars but they got me where I needed to go. The only time I needed more power was when I would drive up to Whistler. The poor Festiva would roar in 1st gear going up the mountain roads. The Protege was actually much nicer inside than a lot of subcompact and compact cars today. Padded door armrest and upper part of door. The doors had cloth matching the seats. And the cloth on the seats was so nice, soft and comfortable. Four power windows, AC, sun roof that popped up and slid open. I had the Protege for 17 years before I was t-boned one day. I really miss that car. I always tell friends that these basic, starter cars are amazing. Inexpensive, inexpensive to maintain and fun to drive.
The manual Mirage is actually pretty fun to drive lol. The Nissan Micra (Canada only) is a blast to drive as well. Also the 5 speed Smart car is pretty good too 😂
I used to drive an Infiniti q40 until last week. I loved it and wanted a q50. Needless to say, I saw a little Nissan Versa on a dealership website and now I am here now with a brand new 2024 Nissan Versa with the plus package. It’s no Infiniti I love my little Versa with all my heart
I owned a 2006 Sentra, and currently have a 2014 Versa. Both were 1.6L 5 speed manuals. Both were no frills, but super reliable little work horses, with very little different from this car. A bit noisy to drive, but little bit fun too. It is a great car for those starting out in life. P.S. the 5 speed is a great anti-theft device.
Honestly, I thinks its perfect for what it is. This would be a perfect second or third car for someone who has an offroad/sports cars. Perfect to get the groceries, jobsite, and for parts runs. It's cheap enough payments wouldn't hurt and the warranty gives you a huge piece of mind for reliable transportation while you play with your other vehicles.
Interesting fact: Here in Canada we cannot get the Versa in manual anymore, in any trim. BUT we can get the Sentra with a 6 speed in the S and SR trim.

I like this review. As one who became an adult in the 2000s, I still think $18,000+ for a brand new car at absolute base level is a bit insane, BUT....here are a few things I can see:
Lol😊NaiL'D iT Perfect
The beauty of a manual is the fun factor of shifting your own gears too, regardless of price. This was cool

According to boomers who worship Scotty Kilmer, safety features are just more things to break and need fixing...
I had a Mazda that didn't have power steering, cruise control or ABS and it didn't even have a passenger side mirror. LOL. The only option it had was A/C.

I was going to sell it but after driving it for a few weeks I actually become fond of it. It doesn’t try to be anything but a well built, economical and practical ride. I also bought this car 7700 miles. It is not my first manual and I hate the hill assist. It hold you via the brake pressure instead of in the transmission like others. So sometimes I go to give it gas, and I can fill the brakes holding me in place while i'm trying to move forward.
Can you disable the assist?

Good job.
Wow i cannot believe that in 5th gear its almost 4k rpm. The manual was definitely an afterthought.
Yea that kinda bugs me. I was hoping 65 mph was going to be around 2,500 rpms but it’s fine for a moment I guess.
my 98 5 speed manual Sentra does not even have a tachometer
@@fortheloveofnoisemanual without a tac is crazy
nah that's how they are due to lack of torque at lower rpm and current modern ratios. Got a 21' Corolla manual and it does around the same, 6th gear only drops the revs by 500 or so too.
@@jamariiion Why?
It's always feel good to drive a brand new car, no matter how much does it cost, especially from a Japanese brand.
18K for this is still crazy, it doesn't seem to long ago that these cars used to 'start under 10K' and always advertised like that
This car was $12,460 in 2019. The price has gone up nearly 34% in 5 years. 😲
It’s also been updated greatly with a lot more features…
@@hertzair1186people prefer affordability over features
Absolutely perfect. I had a 2006 ford focus with a manual trans and I miss that car sooooo much. Loved how it drove and its size. Simple and pure car. Wish more automakers made cars like this again. All it needs is carplay.
Same here, but an ‘03. Really, a special car.
Man for 18 grand I don’t think anyone can go wrong buying one of these. Especially with the manual. Such a cool little shitbox imo
Much better idea than a Kia Soul at least. I suppose.
@@HourRomanticistKia soul has a lot more utility than a versa they’re up there with Kona and cx-30
See that's the problem, Americans calling this shitbox yet complain average cars in the US are getting expensive since they kept buying large excessive suvs. People forgot the civic was a "shitbox" also in the 90s while Arabs are calling their Mercedes benz shitbox compared to their supercars
@@Dongzzzzzzbut it is a cheap shitbox 😂
@cormaro13 yeah like the cars Americans drove during the oil crisis till the 90s corolla segment.
I was waiting for someone to cover this hidden gem of a car!
Just bought one. Love it
Ignore the MPG rating on the sticker for the manual. I bought a 2024 in September and I average 40MPG all city driving.
Yes, MPG estimate is very low compared to actual. I'm averaging 44.2 in mixed driving.
I just built this car online the other day for fun and was surprised they offered a manual. Thanks for reviewing! I find myself watching more car content featuring attainable cars over ultra exclusive ones.
3:59 I love how this engine bay is so gorgeous, accessible from any side...
With a free stinkbug friend too!
Where I work, we have tons of these as rentals. Great cars honestly.
i've always liked the idea of a really cheap manual car to build a super lightweight track tool / seat time car, or to just mess around with.
Get one of these, Tint the windows, invest in some aftermarket soundsystem, cmmmge rims/tires when they wear out and its not bad at all
Finally a cheap car video. Also, the Sentra still offers manual 6 speed.
Not in the United States
@colinsullivan3353 Sucks
Canada only
We get manual sentra here in Canada, but no manual versa option
That new 6MT Canadian Sentra also offers a manual hand parking brake despite having disc brakes on the back. Most modern manual cars have an electronic parking brake which is an odd paring to a manual transmission.
Thank you for reviewing this 5-speed Versa! Been eyeing it for a while.
11:49 - That bus driver has unmatched aura.
Frrr
What video was it?
I would not normally watch a verse review. But if the Topher doing it. I'm going to watch.
I love that this car exists and I like how simple it is
Car looks really damn good to be honest
2:58 I actually love this car because of my interest in cars. It’s just what you need and that’s all. Nothing less or more. And it’s a manual which is very cool! So few cars out there like this in America, which makes it’s super interesting to me. Like yeah I’ll have more fun in a Mustang GT or a Corolla GR, but damn this thing is neat to me!
4:02 does the stinkbug come standard?
Honestly this is the most refreshing new car i have seen in a long while !! This is what we need.
why does it look so fun 😭😭😭😭
i had such a great time 😭 cheap cars are the best
@TopherDrives you should review the Mitsubishi mirage 😭😭😭
@@slocarfr if you gave it some nicer wheels/tires it would make for a blast on the backroads or autox
It's tempting haha! Something about a simple car!
@@ShaiyanHossainno it wouldn’t what tf are you yappin about this slow hunk of shit would still be a slow hunk of shit with all that
The manual Mirage is actually pretty fun to drive lol. The Nissan Micra (Canada only) is a blast to drive as well.
Also the 5 speed Smart car is pretty good too 😂
Stuck on 6:43 “this key has a condom on it…” 😂
Ikr 😂😂
My phone too stuck there why?
This guy a such a great driver. Just so smooth
You need to do a commute/road trip video with a Mazda 3 Sport Turbo
I passed on the same one for $15,900 new last year, crazy the price went up. No apple car play either.
Probably the best Versa video I've yet seen.......and this kid is one helluva driver.
Interesting fact: Here in Canada we cannot get the Versa in manual anymore, in any trim. BUT we can get the Sentra with a 6 speed in the S and SR trim.
i have a 2019 5 speed. love your videos!

I drove one of these for a couple of years as an Oreillys delivery driver. They hold up very well and are a blast to drive hard. It took everything I could dish out at legal speeds and gave 26mph in town while driving hard.
