Rodney played my guitar and sang this song for me at my dad's service (he happened to be playing at that venue that night and came out on the patio where we were celebrating my dad's life). He's not only an amazing song-writer, but a gracious and caring human being. Thank you for sharing your music, Rodney. You are a gift.
Mom died from cancer in 2004; Dad left us in 2013. This is for both of you. I can't wait to see you both in eternity, worshiping Jesus around His magnificent throne.
Rodney Crowell wrote this for his late father who, like many of us had some or, in some cases , many differences with our fathers but had a chance to reconcile those differences before it was too late. RIP Dad, I Love & miss you. everyday.
THANK YOU RODNEY. you never know when your life will end. a song like this makes you realize that. don"t take your life for granted,or other people around you.
Wonderful song. I lost my Dad in 2017 three days after my birthday. He lost his in 1941 two weeks before his 11th birthday. His older brother was drafted the next year. That put my Dad the man of the house with 7 siblings still at home with him and grandma. Many things I wish we could have said to each other. I thank God for such a father.
Many years ago in 1991, my husband and I were watching The Ralph Emery show in Nashville network. Rodney Crowell was on and sang this song. Our 20 yr old son, kevin, had left a couple of hours before this. He came over and hugged me, and told me he loved me and would be back in a little while. This song came on and I told my husband that if something happened to Kevin, our last words were, "I love you." An hour later, our doorbell rang. Our son had lost his life in an accident. My sister wrote to Rodney and told him about this and how we had just heard this song. Rodney sent us a card, and a tape from that show with him singing this song. He is a wonderful man.
god bless you and your family. i just came along to this , and i lost my dad, niece, and uncle within 1 month. march 2017, and this is just so beautiful! take care of each other, because this world is just crazy anymore. xoxox!!!!!!💗
I wanted to sing this at my mom's funeral. She passed from lung cancer Easter night 2004. I dared not after my dad committed suicide September 2013. If I could have one wish, it wouldn't be for fortune or fame, but to sit once more and talk with them.
Stuart Sullenbarger ...no, Rodney, you aren't un-noticed as a songwriter and instrumentalist! I have appreciated those talents ever since I 1st heard you. So glad you settled down though!
In 1980 I went to a Rosanne Cash appearance (maybe 50 people there) in Bham, AL. She got Rodney onstage, I ran home, grabbed an album by each of them, got back, got them autographed at the end of the show and been listening to them ever since. God bless storytellers like Rodney.
This song expresses how I feel about my Dad. Five years gone, and forever in my heart. I love you Dad, and I love Rodney for writing such a heartfelt song.
God only knows how many can relate to this touching, and beautiful song..thank you Rodney for easing the pain I've felt for years over things I never said.
Rodney, you've written some good ones but, I think this is yr very best. Thank you. Very meaningful song & it reminds us all to settle things before it's too late. I'm glad to hear that you do believe in a better place to get to. I just HOPE you know that the Bible (New Testament) teaches that it's ONLY belief in Jesus that can get us there. And of course, we have to ask for forgiveness for what all we've done wrong since God won't let impurities into a sinless Heaven. God bless you kid. See you there. Virginia
music our soul our heartbeat and strength i loss my mother my house an my cousin and my 12 yr old daughter in one year i turned to my guitar an songs like this help me cope thank you rodney for such a heart felt song
Rodney has been so great throuhhout career, but I didn't realize that this one song would touch me so deeply. Thank you for putting down on paper what i feel in my heart. I love you mom.
I got a few shivers, goosebumps, and a lump in the throat listening to this. Had to play it a few times one-after-the-other to catch it all. My Father died alone, in a nursing home, coming up 4 years ago on 2nd May 2014. I myself was in hospital a hundred miles away, and was unfit to travel when they called my mobile (cell) phone to inform me he passed away. He was in good spirits the last time I spoke to him, and I arranged to see him when I got discharged and was fit to travel out to the home. It would only have been (hopefully) 2 weeks. I talked with him on Thursday evening (May 1st). The next day, he was having his tea and biscuits before bedtime at 9pm, and was noted to be in good cheer and still joking with the staff. The nurse came to collect his cup at 10pm and give him his medication, but that was it - in the space of an hour, he decided to leave this world. I never got to say the few things I wanted him to hear. And likewise, there were a few things he never said to me, as neither of us were emotional in that sense (we never said we loved each other, and I never even called him Dad). We were just like 2 mates that got drunk together, rode our motorbikes, and took the piss out of each other quite a bit.
In 2012, I lost my dad to Alz. In those last few days that he was conscious, I made sure he heard everything I wanted him to know. While I'm sure he already knew, in those last days of consciousness , when I knew he could still here me, I told him I loved him and that beyond that, he was and will always be my hero. So now, 2 years later, this song still rings so true to me.
This song is wonderful & so moving in it's own right. However, after reading his memoir, "Chinaberry Sidewalks," it becomes even more moving & heart touching.
Thank you for sharing that lovely story. I cannot think of a more appropriate song for him to sing at your dad's memorial. So moving, although it tends to bring the tears up. It doesn't surprise me a bit that Rodney was so sweet and gracious; he is just that sort of person. :-)
DETTA ÄR EN OFÖRGLÖMLIG SÅNGTEXT/OCH ATT VILA. MINA ÖGON PÅ VÄRLDENS VACKRASTE MAN ÄR SOM ETT. MIRAKEL,,,I JUST ADORE ROD CROWELL/TAKE CARE ROD AND KEEP SINGING YOUR FANTASTIC SONGS FOREVER ❤💜❤ Love from Helene in Sweden 💐🌿💐
Just discovering this great singer-songwriter after many years of listening to country. I'm super late to this show, but glad I made it. This guy is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!! He is the INSPIRATION & POWER behind so many loved songs!
This reminds me of the last moments of my husbund in the emergency room. It was so sudden I did not have a chance to say my last goodbye. And if I did, could he have heard me?
Rodney Crowell & Alan Jackson are 2 of my favorites in the country music scene. the first time I heard "I Couldn't Leave You if I Tried" it caught my attention, big time! I then took notice with more of his music. great songwriter!
What a beautiful song and lyrics Rodney Crowell. I have sung it many times for Friends I have lost, it's very appropriate. Thank you for writing lyrics that my heart feels to say at times like the loss of my friends.
+Wooden Nickel Soooo.... I can be sort of slow at times so let me think about this...Rodney Crowell standing in line at the Walmart Deli.... might have been him, might not have been him. Makes sense to me! LOL
I think Rod are singing about his father,,,,and I thinking of my father as I lost some years ago,,,we got too short time to talk,,,and now I should like to talk to him,,,and tell him I loved him so much,,,he was drinking,,,and I hated him many many years,,, so sad 😰💌🌷
One of the best live performances of a song I've ever heard. It memorializes, with such clarity, his last visit with his dieing father. I like it better than the studio version.
@FXMAN66.. We did a few weeks worth of talking before the song came up. I played it for him and played the CD. No tears, we knew the score, he was in WWII and I got drafted during Nam so we both knew (and know) death is the culmination of living, or in our case knowing we move to a new level of living. A long time ago I touched someone to say goodbye that was very close to me and died, their body was cold, and in that instant I knew the body was just a vessel. I covered this song on here also.
I play this song for my late husband all the time because it took us 35 years to get married, and we only had 4 years together after loving each other since childhood.
My dad has been gone almost 9 years and I still think about him every day. His photo is the screensaver shot on my cell phone. This song reminds me how much I loved...and still do love him.
After reading this, I really do not have words to express my sorrow for you. I just pray that God helps you deal with this. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.
My dear mother died of lung cancer on July 12, 2008 so you will understand how this beautiful song resonates with me. Those who know.....understand. (Les P.)
Thanks for posting. I took care of my Pa for the last 30 days he was with us and we did a lot of talking in that time. I did this for him on my Martin about a week before he passed and we both agreed, beautiful song...

Rodney is probably the most underrated person in the country music business, not only a great song writer and singer but a truly good person
Mom died from cancer in 2004; Dad left us in 2013. This is for both of you. I can't wait to see you both in eternity, worshiping Jesus around His magnificent throne.

To my beautiful wife of 21 years, she left to heaven on 9/25/2020. Virginia I miss you so much, I'm nothing without you babe. Rest in peace my love.
How & Why does Rodney have such "Poetry", Beautiful words
Inside of Him.
What a Gift He is to Us.
I think Guy Clarks prescence in his life, and vive versa, made them both a gift to us.
Don't you know it!!! he is awesome. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to hear him Live before I leave this earth.

Put tears and hurt in my heart for you both.
I wanted to sing this at my mom's funeral. She passed from lung cancer Easter night 2004. I dared not after my dad committed suicide September 2013. If I could have one wish, it wouldn't be for fortune or fame, but to sit once more and talk with them.
I'd listen to anything Rodney wrote. So talented!
