Sadness was being irritating about everything in the beginning, apart from toddler Riley because, you know, that’s how babies and toddlers usually are, because Riley was suppressing her sadness. Joy was literally forcing her to be happy in situations where you wouldn’t normally be happy about, at that age.
But Joy’s obsession with keeping Riley happy ultimately ended up hurting her and got them into their current situation.
Sadness was unknowingly trying to get Riley to feel what she needed to feel without being aware of it. It’s like how you push and push sadness down until you reach a breaking point. That’s basically what was happening with Riley.
We think happiness is the ultimate goal. That being happy all the time is what we need, but it’s not true. That’s not how life works. We need to be able to express all our emotions in a healthy way to be able to grow.
That’s what the movie tried to portray. That’s it’s okay to be sad. To feel negative emotions.

i always wondered why sadness was portrayed so negatively, like joy is annoyed that sadness even exists, even though it's one of the core emotions. and then i realized, it's because of Riley. it's just her personality, her head emotion is joy, and since she's still young, she doesn't realize that being sad is natural. so it depends on the person, like Riley's mom's head emotion is sadness, and she's a full functioning adult, and there's nothing wrong with her.

Yes, and I think for a lot of people, seeing Sadness interact with Bing Bong is a turning point in their opinions. I would say that the movie depicts the purpose of sadness is to empathize/sympathize with others. The kids on the hockey team cheered Riley up because they saw how upset she was, Sadness listened to Bing Bong, and the mom (for whom Sadness is the lead) queued into Riley's mood.

It's hard to look out of the picture when characters are supposed to represent emotions and they actually act like people, but Sadness can't control her actions
    It's all a metaphor

This is why I like this movie because of Joy & Sadness. Everyone thinks that I’m always happy & kind, but on the inside I am so many emotions. I told my best friend that I have been struggling to feel happy & joyful that I had a breakdown. She told me that she always thought I was so strong. You know the saying “I’m so happy I could cry!” That’s Joy & Sadness as one emotion!

I actually find Sadness relatable because I also been misunderstood because I been sad all the time and everyone keeps making me “happy” and even when they asked me why I’m sad. I can’t give a valid reason. I just feel sad. But I’m better now I’m not always sad or happy. Just sometimes.

7:15 Riley's still trying to figure out who she is, she's only 12. That's why they're all different. 8:06 BET, I bet u $5 (not even) by the end of the movie u'll change ur mind. 10:56 🤲🏾💵

I've watched this once before, probably 1,5 years ago, I cried hard at the bing bong part.
Watching this now, I didn't think I'd react cause this is just sort of a recap with the reactions, but I honestly burst out in tears in less than a splitsecond the moment bing bong left that wagon.

You: What is Sadness business, showing up so much?
Me: ohhhhohohohoh buddy you're in for a RIDE
Also, the way Riley went emotionless was so relatable to me bc that's how my depressive episodes go. I just can't feel anything, nor happiness, sadness, anger... I'm just existing. For months. Until something in me snaps and I'm able to ask for help. It feels like waking up, reacting. Seeing it like that, for a kid's movie, when it took me 15 years to recognize my problems and patterns? it made me emotional af. If I had this movie as a child it would have saved me so much time, to recognize how some happy memories turned blue later, and how feeling "negative" emotions wasn't a bad thing. I grow up being a "happy kid" and being branded like that turned in straight up Toxic Positivity in my life, the need to always be positive and happy, even when I wasn't. It was exhausting, and it made me burn out in my late teens. Now? as a 28 year old... I've been so much better since I've embraced negative emotions in my heart. Taking "being happy" off my list of goals in life gave me peace.

I hate that you all think that joy in general is a toxic person. The point of the entire movie is that sadness is an important part in our life. Joy never knew that until she had character development in which she realized life isnt all just about happiness.
You’re so dumb to say that joy is a toxic person, she literally realized it all on the end of the movie. Why are y’all holding grudges?? If joy hadn’t been very positive/ always happy, to the point its toxic, the movie wouldnt have had a clearer way to say that sadness is important too.

Interesting fact about Bing Bong: Before the release in 2015, Bing Bong did not appear in any of the trailers or promotional material. Pixar kept his existence a complete secret until the actual release. They even went so far as to deny Richard Kind (the voice of Bing Bong) a trip to the Cannes Film Festival before the general release, when all the other cast members got to go. But of course Bing Bong had to fade...as a sign that Riley was growing up and moving on from her imaginary friends. In fact she had already moved on at the beginning of the movie, which is why we find Bing Bong wandering around in long term memory instead of playing a daily role in Riley's consciousness.

I tend to bottle up my emotions a lot because I was always told that I had to be happy. This was one of the many reasons I have severe anxiety and have panic attacks very frequently . I tend to lash out and get angry over little things. No one told me as a child that feeling all emotions was ok. I was restricted, mocked my mother if I cried. This is my favourite pixar movie and it hit too close to home. 😔

This movie is AMAZING!! Also a random theory is that Riley doesn’t know if she is a girl or a boy because she is still growing up and finding out stuff, the reason is that the emotions are different genders instead of only girls or boys like the parents emotions are

inside out is my favourite pixar movie by far, and it's probably one of my favourites ever. i can't watch this with company because i always have a mini-breakdown at the scene at the end with riley and her parents which takes me out for a few hours after. i always found the message to be so radical, especially in this culture that promotes constant happiness as the key to a happy life, instead of actually allowing people (especially children!!) to just feel their emotions without shame. just a fantastic movie all around, so glad you enjoyed it and came to your senses about sadness, was ready to fight you there for a sec ngl 😂

7:20 Riley's emotions look so different because she is young, she has still to find her true self, her emotions are still contradicting each other, instead of working together, like inside her parents' heads. In fact, two of Riley's emotions are male (probably reflecting her tomboy style).

I do like how sadness kept touching stuff in the beginning even tho it was annoying the first time I watched it. That’s what happens when something upsetting happens and you try to put sadness in a corner, it’ll start spilling over into aspects of your life uncontrollably.

One time my daughter was Disgust for Halloween, I was Joy. She had a breakdown 3/4 through me putting on her makeup (it was the eyelashes that did it), and refused to go out. She got to into character 🤣 She stayed home that year. The picture I took of her in that outfit bawling her eyes out is priceless.

On first viewing, it's very easy to be angry at Sadness, but I think the movie does a good job of turning the viewer around on that. For one thing, Riley isn't sad because a little lady in her head is pushing buttons--not really: she's sad because of what's going on in her life, and the stuff inside is meant to represent that. Suppressing sadness and forcing a smile all the time isn't good for your mental health, and as you said around 10 minutes in, sadness really helps you relate to and have compassion for others.
    Feel all the things.
