Your getting to be the only thing worth watching on this polluted network. Thanks John
@ErikHyndmanto the a hole grammar police.
Would love to see more shots of what youre looking at on the depthfinder. Great vid as always
Another great video John. keeps the motivation alive as the wind and weather worsens.
Great trip right there, Skinner!
Incredible!! You just got me through my cardio workout!!
Every time i watch your clips. I feel excited and i want to fish and i want to come with you❤ and catch and see fish and learn🎉❤best wishes ❤908
Good stuff, John Skinner - from Johnathan Skinner (California)!
Regarding the gut and 16’ aluminum’s.
My first “real” boat in 1993 was a 1981 16’ StarCraft side console. It was 72” wide. My friend and I gutted the boat, redid the floors and console, built a casting platform on the deck, and outfitted her with a new evinrude 48hp spl.
Yes, we travelled through the gut to Plum island on many occasions. However, you HAD to pay attention to the weather, your marine radio, etc.
Some great memories crossing the gut in that boat. Sometimes really hairy ones. Lol.
I wouldn’t fish the guy with that boat, but pass through and fish the eastern end of plum island? Absolutely!
13:33
I had exactly that Starcraft, two boats ago. This ones deeper and wider by a lot. I would have been scared to be in the gut with the other one. We got a lot of good use from it in the Sound though.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing lol wow amazing! Yea that boat was perfect in the bay, and the sound. It was tricky to launch at Truman’s. So we would usually launch from G pond or Hallocks, then whip around the point to the sound side.
Great videos u always share ,I love surf fishing and ur videos have taught me a lot ,I save every video u share John , u the best ,thank u .🌊🎣
Hey John... watch most of your vids, thank you for what you do. Also a SS member and headed to same area as you for the winter soon. I see like that you, like me, fish solo mostly. I would like to suggest you look at a Man Overboard Device (MOB) I installed one on my Michigan boat and will to the FL boat as soon as I can. Us old guys gotta be careful. Be safe!
Great stuff John, thanx
what a great technique with the cannon ball weight !
Enjoyed watching this episode
As always, awesome video. I wish you were wearing a pfd. Sounds ridiculous but one saved my life. I just couldn't get back in the boat. I went from boating to swimming in seconds. Had a radio and uscg saved me. Not a video I want to see.
Your vids are fire
You are my hero!
Late 70s early 1980s ALL boats on the Delaware Bay averaged 16ft. An 18ft boat with twin 70s was an ass kicking boat at the time
Which is crazy because the Delaware can get nasty quick
@@sd0753 yes, but back in the day it was pretty much all small boats. I have a 1988 Grady overnighter 20ft and it does just fine. I wouldn't want to tow or gas up anything bigger
Good one John....buuut....PFD....under the shirt maybe? You're alone, on the ocean/bay. Plus, should have a trailing rope(poly to float) so you can grab hold and get back to the boat. This applies to EVERYONE ! BE SAFE. Have fun. Be courteous to all.
Shut up noob
An enclosure on a boat even without a heater feels like you're fishing on a pleasant summer day
I WAS SHOCKED YOU THOUGT IT WAS A BLUE BUT JUST A THROW BACK STRIPER DIFFERENT BITE ALL TOGETHER AND YOU ARE THE BEST WTF HAPPENED
Productive area for sure. Just never been a fan of having to use all that weight and heavy gear. Big bass there though. Nice job as usual.
It's just the sinker. The rod is nothing like what I used there 30 years ago.
very nice 😀😀
I'm going there tomorrow morning with my 27' boat - from Old Lyme CT. If you have your own fishing gear and you want to join let me know.
Nice work John, and the right choice, I was in the eastern sound today, I should have gone there. I find the top view much more viewer friendly. And I learn much more when your on your boat. Question, why did you chose to go with the three way rig as opposed to using the flutter spoon, I saw you were rigged up with one ? Thanks.
John can correct me if I’m wrong, but I use flutter spoons a slot and I enjoy them, but I find they tend to scope away too much in fast current like that. The 3-way swivel with heavy sinker keeps his jig vertical.
@@rudyraymundo4554 thanks, I know that, that’s why he uses those heavy Tsunami spoons over there, Im just wondering if that was dictated by a specific condition ? I noticed that he seems to always be fishing the ebbing tide over there ? Thanks.
I made a drop and there was funky scope and I caught a bluefish, then went back to the 3 way.
Amazing how you don't put any action on the bucktail. I know ur in current, but still. Great vid as usual.
Exactly. A lot to be learned from that. I've always said if you can swim or glide the bucktail near the bottom you'll likely catch. BTW, this is an age-old commercial pinhooker method.
You need a co angler/camera man/net man Skinner. Thats how you avoid the dreaded sore arms 😅
I’m taking that job lol
@@gennerobootz6490 might as well, I live too far away
Just to let you know your dark matter skinner jig and bounce handles small to medium yellowfin tuna jigging
Wow. Thanks for sharing that!
As always, great content John! Thanks for sharing. Just bought your book too. What boat is that if you don't mind me asking?
1986 Grumman 5.0 Meter Boat.
Hi John, great video as usual, thanks . I see you adjusting your drag several times when Blackfishing , do you sock down your drag to start and back off once the fish is hooked. I generally set my drag before fishing and maybe once in awhile I adjust as I go. You seem to do it a lot more especially on bigger fish. Can you explain. Also , I have a dark matter conventional rod that I love for Tog but I was curious on what your thoughts were about the dark matter rod that you used for the Seabass. Would you ever consider that rod for blackfish with a jig or is it too heavy. Just curious on your thoughts on it
Thanks.
I always fish with a tight drag, and back down if needed. The tight, almost locked, drag provides the best hooksets and stopping power. With the exception of albies and probably tuna, there is always time to back down on the drag if needed. Also, when fighting a fish, I feel it makes no sense to use the same drag setting at the end of a battle when the fish is tired but may run at a difficult angle under the boat as opposed to the initial hookset when the fish needs to be pulled from structure. This video shows my blackfish jigging rod, bit.ly/3oWVAPu, the ML version. The M version would be OK for tog jigging, but the ML is a better choice and was designed with tog jigging in mind. ruclips.net/video/RHXRvwBqHss/видео.html
How do you store your bucktails for trips?
I haven't noticed that in any videos. Typically mine are just in a plastic plano box but wondered if that was bad for them sliding around on each other.
Ziploc bags, but they must be dry.
Outstanding trip John. What was the average size of the bass?
Does anyone know where I can get those sinkers John is using in this video, I can only find up to 6 once’s, no 10’s ? Thanks
Will check your fishing the bucktail book BUT also commenting ~ is there a ratio you follow to determine the bucktail weight for the 3-way? I understand staying vertical/reducing scope with appropriate lead sinker, but having trouble determining the general weight for the bucktail. I assume this varies depending on boat speed in the drift vs speed of water moving at lure depth? Any general guidance appreciated. Consulting the book now too.
1.25 ounces for the bucktail is about standard. All weight adjustments are made with the sinker.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks Skinner! Might try artificially slowly my drifts as well with the trolling motor on no-wind or super calm days on the smaller fishing rig
Surprised to see you using a level wind. Ive always felt that the freespool is hindered by the worm gear.
Agreed. I used the maxel next trip.
Curious as to why you don’t just go with a heavy bucktail only?
Because a 10-ounce cannonball lets you follow the bottom contour much more effectively under these conditions.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing so just the drift alone is working the bucktail?
You just need to swim the bucktail near the bottom, which is what this accomplishes.
Thats how i do it in the race w/ the Oreint Star boys.
Nice. But where are all the cows? My guess is all those trophy shots with victorious anglers hoisting their fish are taking their toll. Big fish should not be taken out of the water! At least those small fish are more resilient . Thank you for modeling good release practices though!
Was that you John out in the sound today mid day
Too rough for me today.
This 3 way rig with Bucktail will only work with strong current ??
I wouldn't use it below 1.5 mph, and I usually want at least 2mph.
Where do you get those cannon ball sinkers? Also, do any big bass ever come back in that area during the fall?
That area is a funnel or pinchpoint for most of LI sound. Yes huge bass pass through there. That’s a night game for the most part.
I have the mold for those. Bigger bass go through in lesser numbers than spring. A better shot for big ones at night.
Hi John like your videos. What size 3 way swivel are you using?
looks like it was oct 2? was it? i thought i saw you out there
correct
Did you get a length on that blue? Awesome fish
No. I should have laid it on that back measure tape. Definitely a brute.
how come you dont eat bass?
I think the real question is why anyone eats them unless you guthook or over fight it. given the state of the fishery and the abundance of other arguably tastier fish species (cod, haddock, scup, bsb, winter flounder, fluke, tog,)
PS, the guides are not lined up on that conventional rod.
Not supposed to be. It's spiral wrapped AKA acid wrapped. Eliminates side to side torque. Many of the better rods are built this way.
Ever have a video that you dont catch anything? Just fish great south bay long Island!
🤘🏼🤟🏽👍🏼💪🏼❤️🩹
Wait !!!!!!! Skinny are you bait dragging lol
What bait? A bucktail tipped with a synthetic plastic strip.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing on one of the rods i thought I saw clam
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ohhh it was a sinker lol
