      David Troung Vuong you are absolutely right, i started drawing about a year ago and i used to only draw anime faces and stuff like these when one good person told me i would eventually grow up and get bored with anime faces, i thought "why would i even listen to them" but now i draw so much realistic ballpoint pen drawings that i can hardly ever want to go back to draw anime, realism sure is fantastic and you never stop learning the more you draw

    I've been teaching myself to draw for years in between raising my kids and working all the time. Because I've been limited with time and money it's been a slow process. Aside from reading book after book about drawing most of my training had been me copying photos or other drawings or just what's right in front of me by just sighting. I've never wanted to be encumbered by lots of tools. Just a drawing surface and a drawing tool.
    A few years ago I discovered You Tube and the wealth of knowledge being shared about drawing. But still no one showed me how to draw better the cc way I like to draw until I found your page. Since watching , your videos my skill level has exploded. Thank you.

    • @ArtofWeiHo
      @ArtofWeiHo  10 лет назад +2

      Thank you so much Cameron. It's really great to hear that my videos are of help. We probably share similar backgrounds. I use to work full time and with kids, it's though to get things done on the side. Luckily, I've always been in the art field, though mostly 3D computer graphics as that's where the jobs are. So I haven't had much time for drawings. I feel lucky that I have the time now to draw again for my own sake. And sharing it and being able to help viewers like you means a lot to me. I love creating art.

  • @z1522

    The essential issue with faces is that we bring a huge mental predilection for differentiating minute nuances. Exercises like this over time let the artist work in a detached, analytical manner, ignoring judgments like pretty or ugly; paradoxically, the end result generally comes closer to accurate rendering than if the artist is emotionally invested - explaining why "expressionism" is generally unflattering in portraiture.

      Shttt... The grid purists will hear you. Kidding. We should speak up, because I never found much success with grids, but when I stumbled upon this method it worked extremely well for me. Mr. Wei shows how it could be done properly - If you stick to the ratio between features, how could it go wrong? The human eye might be bad, use a ruler, then it would be exact. Why the objection?

Most of them go way too fast, they're sped up and time lapsed, or they're way too slow, and nobody wants to sit for 45 minutes while someone rambles about how to shape an eyeball. Art of Wei,
    This is an Excellent Video. I Highly Recommend this method for all artists wishing to recreate what they see accurately.
    I once had a project to reproduce a drawing as perfectly as possible about 23+ years ago. I thought the task was next to impossible without tracing - Tracing was not allowed and I was dead against tracing for any reason anyway. I used the same method this artist uses, but also measured with my pencil and finger. I thought I was a freak because I was the only art student that pulled of the assignment. The drawing made it to an art show. It really works extremely well. I will be looking for more videos by this artist.

    That was fascinating because I've never heard anyone describe my own drawing style before, the use of relationships like what you just did. The only drawback of using this method when it doesn't come naturally to someone is that when your first comparison is off just a little bit and you then use it to compare other things to, the whole thing will be wonky in the end. Thank you for this!

    I usually skip through videos before watching them to make sure it's something I'll like, and I can't help but notice the part where you use the image on top/below the sketch layer to make sure the drawing is right, is there any point in drawing it without the picture to begin with when you're going to use it later on anyways?

    seems like a good method for duplicating pictures but what about drawing from imagination?. unfortunatly i do not think this method will work for my purposes but i still think you are a very good drawer.

    • @ArtofWeiHo
      @ArtofWeiHo  9 лет назад +1

      Daniel Morales Being able to see accurately and develop your artistic eye will help in any kind of art you do. Drawing from imagination takes a long time to get good at. And that usually involves drawing from reference for a long time.

    Good tips Wei..You got a good eye for dem there angles and lengths..thats the key...gotta have the eyes for it.. I've never drawn with a computer program..looks like there are some serious advantages..Something tells me its not the same feeling as putting yer shits on paper with a pencil..or paintbrush or anything else...maybe something special gets lost when you bring technology in..maybe not..not shitting on your tools..I would love to experiment with them..for now..I slap shits on paper.

    total game changer for me
    your approach - start with a detailed eye and move outwards from there - is the complete opposite of what i've always been taught, that you should get the silhouette of the whole face blocked out first and then move in to the features. Only trouble with that approach being, of course, that any error with your silhouette and the whole portrait will be wrong (although you'll only discover this later :- ) )
    I've just tried your approach and the result is way better than anything i'd achieved previously.
    I'm still no Raphael, for sure, but I'm super excited to see where your approach could get me.
    Many Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
