I feel like you're missing out on a big opportunity by not naming your channel, "The Wei It Works"... lol
Hunter Frank There are many possibilities, as I've learned throughout my school years=).
Round of aplause for this gentleman rigt here
Or "The Wei Art Works"
maybe

Realism is really fun. The whole process and the feeling of accomplishment after finishing a piece
Yes, absolutely David. It's the wow factor that drives artist to finish a piece with hyper realism.
David Troung Vuong you are absolutely right, i started drawing about a year ago and i used to only draw anime faces and stuff like these when one good person told me i would eventually grow up and get bored with anime faces, i thought "why would i even listen to them" but now i draw so much realistic ballpoint pen drawings that i can hardly ever want to go back to draw anime, realism sure is fantastic and you never stop learning the more you draw
For me,the only fun thing is the feeling of accomplishment after a good drawing. The process is not fun anymore...But I wanna enjoy the process too. 😣someone help
@@INVENTORplayer I'm 14 and have drawn anime for a few years, I wanted to be really good to make my own comics but now it's just making me bored and hasn't really been stretching my skills. I've started realism/surrealism and I've never been more happy with my art :))
The worst part is the foundations/lay in.
Then the absolute joy of shading and watching it gradually come to life as you listen to your favorite music.. It's a feeling like no other.
The beauty of this video (no pun intended with the subject), is that this is NOT sped up, and it goes in full, real-time speed so we see it fully from start to finish.
Spectacular!
+funmeister Thanks.

for me self portraits start ugly and then finish... pretty ugly
Here are some awesome and easy steps on how to draw perfectly
Step 1 - Draw a circle
Step 2 - Add detail
Step 3 - You're done.
Do this and you will be talented in secs.
Jean Pierre Ramos Can't get anymore simple than that=).
instructions were unclear! got dick stuck in blender =//
You forgot squidwards nose
But I dont know how to draw a circle. Lol
a face is different shapes depending on the person, some people have round, some people have pentagons and others have ovals
A good way to learn where you're making mistakes in your drawing is by holding it up to a mirror. Distorted features show up
jackie scorpio That's interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.
Bad way. No one is gonna look at the drawing flipped
@@jeremyemilio9378 no, that's not the point, when you see a drawing from the same angle, you fail to notice the mistakes, by flipping if aka seeing it from a different angle helps you identify the mistakes and fix it

I’m 4 years late, but this is gold!
I've been teaching myself to draw for years in between raising my kids and working all the time. Because I've been limited with time and money it's been a slow process. Aside from reading book after book about drawing most of my training had been me copying photos or other drawings or just what's right in front of me by just sighting. I've never wanted to be encumbered by lots of tools. Just a drawing surface and a drawing tool.
A few years ago I discovered You Tube and the wealth of knowledge being shared about drawing. But still no one showed me how to draw better the cc way I like to draw until I found your page. Since watching , your videos my skill level has exploded. Thank you.
Thank you so much Cameron. It's really great to hear that my videos are of help. We probably share similar backgrounds. I use to work full time and with kids, it's though to get things done on the side. Luckily, I've always been in the art field, though mostly 3D computer graphics as that's where the jobs are. So I haven't had much time for drawings. I feel lucky that I have the time now to draw again for my own sake. And sharing it and being able to help viewers like you means a lot to me. I love creating art.
"I will talk about the process along the WEI"
Get it? I'm so fucking funny.

I have been struggling for years on how to draw faces accurately. Your tutorial was heaven sent! Thank you! 😀
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I was wondering why my face drawings were always coming out crooked. Following your method, my drawing came out 100 times improved. My problem was I draw face first and drew eyes in. Now I know drawing eyes first is much better to keep the balanced look.
~"Started from the eye, now we here"~
I've never drawn like this before... I was always taught to make the head shape first and not do details until I have all the minor shapes in.. this way seems a little harder but it was fun to watch nonetheless
Victoria C This is great practice for developing the artistic eye. It's more about learning to see relationships than drawing portraits. There's many ways to draw, this is one of them.
naturally, this is exactly how I always do my portraits, I’m happy someone does the same too!
this is one of the best tutorials i ever saw, after watching this video i went to draw and saw improvements right away, thanks
Alice White That's great Alice.
That's great! Keep working and improving!
Thank you. Countless drawing books talk about seeing relations of an object. But rarely go into any real detail.
This helped me understand much more thoroughly the *how* of finding and building these relations.
Cool. THanks.
I used to draw constantly when I was younger and got so fed up with everyone telling me how and what to draw that I gave it up for years. I've recently been trying to get back into it and this is a fantastic tutorial, one of the only ones to really spark my interest. Thank you =)
Kirsten Soper I'm glad I could inspire you to draw again. Art really is about self expression. You gotta do it for your own sake, that's the only way you'll get good at it anyways. Good luck.
The essential issue with faces is that we bring a huge mental predilection for differentiating minute nuances. Exercises like this over time let the artist work in a detached, analytical manner, ignoring judgments like pretty or ugly; paradoxically, the end result generally comes closer to accurate rendering than if the artist is emotionally invested - explaining why "expressionism" is generally unflattering in portraiture.
+z1522 I love expressionism
This really helped me I HATE doing grids. My first attempt doing this turned out pretty good, thanks alot!
I thought I was the only one!
Shttt... The grid purists will hear you. Kidding. We should speak up, because I never found much success with grids, but when I stumbled upon this method it worked extremely well for me. Mr. Wei shows how it could be done properly - If you stick to the ratio between features, how could it go wrong? The human eye might be bad, use a ruler, then it would be exact. Why the objection?
I love grids I just hate drawing the actual grid😂

I have watched dozens of such videos and I have to say this is probably the most instructive regarding this aspect of drawing . Thanks so much !
+Michael Mahoney Thanks Michael. That's what I'm trying to do here.
I just finished doing the same picture, realised I have a long way to go. Thanks for your tutorial. I'm gonna start practising and improve my skills.
DESMOND FERNANDEZ Cool. Good luck.
this was very helpful! i'm a self taught artist and get frustrated very easily. i cant wait to try this out.
jen Good luck jen.
thank you for having a voice i can listen to for over a minute ^_^
youtube is full of helpful videos that i will never see to the end.
I always come back to this video to remember stuff I forget...

It's amazing how you broke down something that seemed very complicated into a very simple way to get the proportions exact; which is key to drawing a look-a-like from a photo. Thanks for sharing Wei!
Wei, thank you so very much for posting your utubes!!!
Your instruction has just enabled me to draw my best portrait in 59yrs!!!!!!!!!!
you have given me the confidence to reach my goals.
I can't thank you enough.
+Alan Woodland =). Thank you Alan.
Lips are off a bit? We'll just call it artistic expression. I like this technique. I always have a hard time with proportions.
Me too

So hard to find helpful, useful, easy to understand sketching tutorials for faces!! Most of them go way too fast, they're sped up and time lapsed, or they're way too slow, and nobody wants to sit for 45 minutes while someone rambles about how to shape an eyeball. Yours seems to be about just right for me, so thank you!! I can draw decent faces, but I'm still struggling with being able to commit what I see in my mind, or in a reference image, onto paper.
You see this stuff every day, but sometimes we dont even think about it.... Amazing teaching technique!!
+Dane Animation Adults Thanks Dane.
I learned to trace the whole drawing over, even the shading, to make my pic great. He can just draw from reference... I need to up my game! THIS IS SUPER GOOD
You shouldn't trace. It doesn't help you improve much. Of course it does help you, but you should (most of the time) draw from reference.
Agnė Rinkevičiūtė I do what helps me, and what helps me is different from what helps you.
FriendOfNature
I used to trace as a 3-6 year old kid, and believe me, my drawings were as shit as ever... I started referencing at about 7, and put it all in one book. When I look back at it, I can really see improvement.
Well, my drawing improved by tracing. I'm not trying to shit all over you, I am trying to tell you that what helps me might not help you. and if that means I'm a 3-6 y/o kid, Then that's that.
FriendOfNature
Do you have any recent examples to show me? I'd love to see some of your work :)
Thanks a lot! Trying to improve my facial drawing skills and always had trouble getting my proportions and angles right. This is REALLY helpful!
silylily1212 Great. Glad it helps.
The bit at the end that talked about exercises to train your artistic eye is really helpful.
this is fantastic! especially breaking it down to manageable chunks and practice lessons at the end. Thank you!
Your tutorials are amazing! I have never attempted to draw faces because of how difficult it is, but after seeing your videos I am finally getting used to it and it is brilliant how easy you put it to see the reference points and angles.
Good job ! Keep going !
Thank you very much for sharing your tips
+Tarso Luiz dos Santos Girio That's really good to hear. Thanks for watching.
Great Tutorial Wei! Good to see how you use the reference lines to get the construction right! I also make drawing tutorials but they are more cartoony!
Stayf Draws Thanks Stayf, yeah, in one way or another, most artist measure this way.
Yes, that's true, but it is good to see it in a videotutorial. I have seen too many when they just draw a photo realistic face from scratch! ;) They seem traced. Yours aren't!
Stayf Draws I see. Yeah, this is more to show a method of drawing. Well, a method of drawing accurately. If I were to do a portrait, I would trace down the features first.
Blacked women
Art of Wei no they don't seems as if u thought urself that way all u had to do was a circle and cross and fillnit it in its not hard and den redefine it to what u are looking for..
Yeh! No more circles, masks, reference lines and all that math. This puts some of the fun back in portrait drawing and it really works. Thanks Wei.
This is the easiest, most thorough explanation of measuring the features while drawing a face. THANK-YOU. You also have a nice speaking voice.
AWESOME TUTORIAL. I don't think even my teacher could teach this. You are very detailed and instead of using the common way, you used a unique technique of your own and I really find this helpful. Thanks for your help.
mightywar839 It's just an exercise to develop the artistic eye. There's many ways to draw anything, this is just one method that has many benefits.
This helped me so much! Probably the first time my drawing resembled the reference 😂
Thank you for this. I love how practical your tutorials are and straight to the point!
+Mordecai Banda Thanks Mordecai. That's what I'm trying to do here.
Thank you so much for making this video. It is exactly what I have been looking for. The exercises at the end for practising measurements and angles are such a great idea, thanks again.
still can't draw a fvcking apple
nico surio FUCKING**
nico surio maybe try finding a apple 🍏 drawing tutorial

Well the lions in Lion King were meant to look like people, but different.
Oh wait, that's the most vague statement ever.
Mee too now xD
Thank u ! U are really a legend to give every detail about how to draw. I am a big fan of you!
Art of Wei,
This is an Excellent Video. I Highly Recommend this method for all artists wishing to recreate what they see accurately.
I once had a project to reproduce a drawing as perfectly as possible about 23+ years ago. I thought the task was next to impossible without tracing - Tracing was not allowed and I was dead against tracing for any reason anyway. I used the same method this artist uses, but also measured with my pencil and finger. I thought I was a freak because I was the only art student that pulled of the assignment. The drawing made it to an art show. It really works extremely well. I will be looking for more videos by this artist.
It's a beautiful painting I can draw my face easily and to draw any face easily but I don't like to paint
Thanks for the vid. The way you break down how to figure how where everything is... explosions in my mind. haha
FargoKraft Thanks FargoKraft.
This tutorial can be said to be directed to more logical artists. Most art tutorials start with the standard head start then with proportion place the parts on. Thank You Wei!
Voidedicon Yes, there's many ways to sketch with correct proportions. This is just one.
I liked how you showed geometric relations to features you draw.
+dvscrobe Thanks. That's the purpose.
She is too cute! I can't believe.
just what i was waiting for thank you so much wei :D
You're welcome, guitarlover1204=).
I love that you show the photo alongside the drawing
This is brilliant. Every stroke is useful - I really appreciate this!
Love the way you use measurements and angles. Very unorthodox unfortunately, but very affective. I like it.
Ryan Kirk Thanks Ryan, it's used for drawing in general, so you can measure everything quickly.
this is madness finally i could draw someone face haha :v thanks mr.Wei :D
Akmal WIIratama Thanks Akmal.
This really helped me!!! Thank u! Also when you didn't explained much I just saw 2hat you did and how to use it!, It's so understandable!!
I used the techniques that you higlighted here and made a great drawing! Thanks!
if i can see this video 10 years ago, i might be a very good illustrator LOL
anyway, this makes me pick up my old 2B, looking forward to your next inspiring tutorial
Haha, cool. Always nice to hear that I'm able to motivate people to draw. It's a great hobby.
I agree! Makes me want to start up another drawing.
Dezigning Art You gotta draw with a screen name like that=).
other useful tutorial! thanks Wei, keep it up!
Thanks allan, will do.
Thank you so much. Some great and useful tips. Will definitely be putting these into practice.
You are an amazing instructor!! Yours is the best instructions on portrait drawing!!! Thank you so much!
she is so cute that i would love to be able to draw her like him ... really great art .... impressive !
+Before SHTF haha, you're fuckin weird dude
+Ethan4Games did you even read what i wrote you sicko, you must have some serious issues with women, are you gay or something ...
Before SHTF Nice edit + liking your own comment. Gg
+Ethan4Games and I did😐
I find that whenever I use this method I have trouble keeping proportions intact.
Brilliant tutorial! Thanks so much for this. Watching you work with a photo reference was very helpful but then seeing some basic exercises to start practicing basic spatial relationships was pure GOLD!
+chuck farley =). Thanks Chuck.
That was fascinating because I've never heard anyone describe my own drawing style before, the use of relationships like what you just did. The only drawback of using this method when it doesn't come naturally to someone is that when your first comparison is off just a little bit and you then use it to compare other things to, the whole thing will be wonky in the end. Thank you for this!
Thank you! Very helpful.
Thanks Susan
i love your videos dude!
Thanks.
This video is so so helpful! I'm doing some fan art right now and with your technique the sketch was really close to the original photo, I had only messed up the left eye but other than that it was all matched perfectly! Thank you so much!
Great.
Thank u so much for this very useful tutorial!! I will go try it out now ! 😍😘
if you get really bored its a lot better to speed the video up to x1.5 or x2 in the settings.
+Dusky Racer YUP, you' re right...
How do you do that? I tried, but everytime I click on the settings, it only showed me the quality of the vid ;; - ;;
+Thi phuong anh Do on the bottom right next to the full screen option their is a gear. Click this gear and you will find 5 options. Now select speed and pick whatever tickles your fancy.
Thanks
you really helped me by watching this video, i can't wait to apply it to my drawing... for some reason i always began with drawing the eye on the right hand side...(my right) and then i drew the other eye before anything else.. your video made so much sense to me and i can't wait to apply this to my drawing tomorrow evening.. a little late tonight to do sketches, i was just winding down before bed and came across your video.. :-) i usually get sooo frustrated because my eyes are not looking in the same direction.. i believe your video will help me immensely...
"If you're doing this and doing this you.. probably got a long way to go". Thanks for the chuckle. Love your videos they're really helpful, keep them coming!
THis is really good
Thanks Jordan

awesome!!! i learned something
elzupilote =). That's good.
fantastic thanks i really like this video.i think this is gonna help me as i was having troubles with the coordination of eye ,nose and mouth.
I've been trying to get better at drawing faces lately, and this is what I'll use. Thanks.
I usually skip through videos before watching them to make sure it's something I'll like, and I can't help but notice the part where you use the image on top/below the sketch layer to make sure the drawing is right, is there any point in drawing it without the picture to begin with when you're going to use it later on anyways?
Sorry, I skipped past the part where it says 'Lets Check It'!
ARTbyJAMES =).
Great tutorial also, sorry for my ignorance xD. Will be subbing!
ARTbyJAMES Haha. Thanks. I think most people skip around when viewing too. It's tough to get someone's attention=).
Thank you so much. Your videos encouraged me to try to draw human face. I followed this one, and was able to make a nice draft. I wasn't expecting myself to be able to handle the accuracy. But it came out nicely. Thank you again for sharing your drawing method.
I really appreciate this. I have been struggling with faces for a long while.
My preference is to watch someone sketch, not use photoshop. That's just me though.
+Jeff C Me too. I like pencil on paper. This was to illustrate the use of measuring, that's all it is.
Excellent video. Have now done 4 different drawings of 4 different women.
If anyone wants a picture of Quasimodo I have some for sale.
This is one of the best tutorials so far in youtube.
love your channel man! great source of inspiration.
seems like a good method for duplicating pictures but what about drawing from imagination?. unfortunatly i do not think this method will work for my purposes but i still think you are a very good drawer.
Daniel Morales Being able to see accurately and develop your artistic eye will help in any kind of art you do. Drawing from imagination takes a long time to get good at. And that usually involves drawing from reference for a long time.
11:57 Borderlands effect :D
This video is really helpful. It is showing me the way to my next step in art. I believe that I don’t need art lessons from teachers when I could just draw and figure out what level I am at. My picky personality probably helped. Thanks for the tips for accuracy in drawing. I believe that I am walking the right path in art. Please reply for anymore tips and tricks.
This was one of the most helpful videos I've found so far. Can't wait to try it 😊 Thanks.
Came here to learn tips and hints in drawing head ... didn't know it was just about copying a photo. Misleading title! It should be titled as how to copy a face from a photo accurately.
+ExThinker Yes, most art is about copying, or referencing.
Art of Wei Copying and referencing are 2 completely different concepts and methods. I am not sure what you are trying to imply there, but the video shows how to copy a photo and not reference a photo.
best tutorial ever
+kensuroケン =). Thanks.
Thank you very much! You saved my day and my drawings! Subscribed!
thank you so much! I've been getting into realism and I could never truly capture the person who I was drawing, this really helps
Good tips Wei..You got a good eye for dem there angles and lengths..thats the key...gotta have the eyes for it.. I've never drawn with a computer program..looks like there are some serious advantages..Something tells me its not the same feeling as putting yer shits on paper with a pencil..or paintbrush or anything else...maybe something special gets lost when you bring technology in..maybe not..not shitting on your tools..I would love to experiment with them..for now..I slap shits on paper.
tdh633 I must warn you there's a bit of a learning curve and your drawings will most likely turn out worse with a tablet than on paper. But it's definitely worth it when you get good for coloring and stuff
which software are you using
almas Kushtiwala It's photoshop.
total game changer for me
your approach - start with a detailed eye and move outwards from there - is the complete opposite of what i've always been taught, that you should get the silhouette of the whole face blocked out first and then move in to the features. Only trouble with that approach being, of course, that any error with your silhouette and the whole portrait will be wrong (although you'll only discover this later :- ) )
I've just tried your approach and the result is way better than anything i'd achieved previously.
I'm still no Raphael, for sure, but I'm super excited to see where your approach could get me.
Many Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks. There are many ways to draw anything. I just like this way because it's way more fun to start shading. Maybe not in this video, but in my other videos, I just go for it. It's just more fun.
I've been watching many tutorials on how to get accurate face proportion and luckily I went to your video, this is very useful thank you very much. :)
What program did you use for this portrait?
Isidro Villamayor Castellanos I'm using Photoshop.
With photoshop you so easily in the layout?
Isidro Villamayor Castellanos Not sure what you mean by 'so easily layout.' Must be the bad translation by google=).
Art of Wei i think he means it looks very very easy for you to do it
so it is, I'm using the google translator
