Has this World-Famous Attraction been Abandoned? The Redwood Highway US-101

- We're back on the Redwood Highway! California's US-101 through the redwoods, once the pinnacle of 20th century road trip attractions, now somewhat forgotten In the hubbub of the 21st. Abandoned resorts and motels litter the route... empty lots where families once spent their vacations, and in the off season, just the faintest echoes of traffic on the highway through the world's Tallest Trees!
We took a quick ride on one of my favorite sections of the Redwood highway, from The famous Peg House (for sale!) to Confusion Hill and the Chandelier Drive-thru Tree - but shockingly, one of the most famous attractions on the redwood highway for a century seems to be closed up and completely abandoned! The world famous Tree House, or Lilley Redwood park treehouse, Or Minnie Stoddard Lilley tree, whatever you want to call it - is closed!

Thanks for the years of entertainment and education, Justin. You’re truly the Huell Howser of RUclips. I’m going to your merch page right now!
Hell Yeah !!! Great Comparison. !!!
Justin - Do In n Out Burger !!! Then you're truly Huell !!!!!!
Your plea to the general public to support these roadside attractions with even the smallest purchases n to take the time to stop on the road n enjoy these eclectic historic awesome places on the way of your life's journey was impassioned n very cool!!! Double Attaboy, Justin n Allie!!!
Awesome
Huell Howser would be proud of you Justin
Huell, a old friend of mine, R{P
I remember Knott's Berry Farm used to have a haunted shack like that one.
Long live Confusion Hill ! Like you said, many of these old Mom and Pop tourists attractions are vanishing because folks are to busy to stop. Unfortunately Tony the Train engineer got replaced. The two new engineers they replaced him with have a very different style. 😢
My family drove through a tree back in 1974 in Sequoia National Park and it is a fond memory of a driving vacation from LA County to Medford, Oregon. 3 weeks of Hwy 101.
We drove through that tree in 1977!
R.I.P. Wonder Spot of Wisconsin Dells. Long gone. But glad I got to experience the Wonder as a youngster.
Great, classic dells attraction. I think its a hotel now.. not sure
It wasn't until watching this video I realized and remembered I've been to confusion Hill and that gravity shack. I must have been 6 or 7 years old 😊 I'm 34 now. Watching this truly brought back memories I've completely forgotten. Thank you 😁
The Gravity Shack at Confusion Hill definitely reminds me of the old Haunted Shack at Knott's Berry Farm. The main proprietors of the Haunted Shack was Slanted Sammy, & Shakey Sadie. Unfortunately Knott's removed the shack in 2000❕😥 MEMORIES❕
Hello from Phoenix Arizona❕🔥
Love the way you articulate when saying “Bigfoot” or “Bigfeet.” 😂
Knott’s and the Redwoods, Justin is the best for these two subjects! 👍👍👍
Getting these notifs makes me SO happy inside i dont know how to describe it. Your energy has been such a comfort - through your struggles you’ve still remained such a positive impact on so many lives. …. TLDR : Thank you for being you! Love from Chicago!
Always appreciate your enthusiasm and adventures, Justin. Shouts also to Alli, who has always has a smile.
Very cool trip! I did almost the exact same trip with my mom last summer. She wanted to visit the redwood forest while we were visiting her dad who lives in Walnut Creek. I told her, "You know. it's not exactly a quick hop over to the redwoods from where we are." But we did it anyways, and had a great time.
I got to explore the Redwood Highway more in depth a few years ago, and I used your previous video series on the Redwood Highway as a guide. You helped me not to miss interesting points along the highway, and you were responsible for making my adventure a little more awesome. Thank you Justin!
This is a Tree Store my Family stopped in 1976 December . They took a pic of my 3 yr old Bro and 9 yr old me . I stopped with my kids in 1996 and took the same pic with my 11 yr old and 7 yr old . So Cool ! Hope you n Al are having a Great Trip . Stay Safe . Love U 2 . Tracey n Rob Say Hello !
Rode our Harleys through the Chandelier Tree many years ago. Fond memory! Thanks for sharing!
That must have been a cool sound!
I bought those cow seeds at Confusion Hill years ago, rip off, ended up with Dalmatians.
I loved this. It's been too many years since I drove up there. I loved Trees of Mystery.
Back in the old days I would beg my dad to stop at Confusion Hill. I would spend my allowance on the Indian Headdress, or Cap Gun (with realistic leather holster) or a redwood burl for my mom 😢(moms can never get enough redwood burls for their birthdays)
Thank you J & A for taking us with you to these great places.
Hai Justin scarred i like your video my name Faris from Indonesia i like your country every day i always watching your RUclips channel😊
That gift shop is ab fab totally, the old fashioned souvenirs we lived to get as kids, n still love 💕 them today!! Great that you show them so in depth!! It is a blast from the past that restores all my youthful energy n attitudes!!! Thanks ever so, Justin Scarred!!!
So glad you went back through the redwood highway. I want to go up there every year but time and money are short so your videos on the subject help quell the longing.
It’s always a pleasure for the 2 of you to do a video together. Excellent tour around Confusion Hill, Justin! 👍
I miss Grant's pass Oregon!! I am moving back there next year.
Great to see Ally in a video. She is totally perfect. ❤
1000s of people can’t be called crazy seeing Bigfoot. I believe. Lol.
Love the videos!! Keep up the great work Justin!
My dad is an expert on Bigfoots; we live in Alberta. He has written three books about them!
Listen, I WANT to believe, Finding Bigfoot just made me totally lose faith... but I'd love to be convinced I'm wrong lol
I totally identify with your passion for roadside attractions, as I come from a generation where they were new n unusual n interesting n Mom n Dad took us to every single available roadside attractions on our vacations 3 times a year from 1965 to forever!!! Our family still gets together on vacation n we still visit every roadside attraction we can find it run up on, from Michigan all the way down to Florida n then over towards Arizona n New Mexico. That is why I love 💕 your videos, Justin, cuz you really appreciate the intrinsic value if our country's history n the purveyance of keeping our National Treasures for future generations!!! I love 💕 to accompany you on all your journeys, as your enthusiasm is extremely awesome n I get to see places I haven't been able to see in person!! Attaboy, Justin n Allie!!!
Thank you, Justin!! You're Highway 101 does helped my family and I during 2020 to plan out our 1st EVER FAMILY ROAD TRIP!!!
"herbal" blankets and the mushroom mugs omg lmao
Ive been to a place like this in South Dakota. Very cool
Okay I’ve done my duty! Ordered sick merch. Now stop telling me what to do! 😂
Excellent work on the editing, Ally! Also, another fun adventure!
I mean usually yeah, but he did the Smug Slug bit twice and each time when he said he's known some smug slugs he showed Ally on camera...
Thats just an editing mistake. With over 1000 episodes and with 500+ cuts in each episode which means over 1,000 touches of the laptop per edit, sometimes they're gonna slip through
How fun was that 🤗
Rode that trail probably when that fillingstation was still open!
Hey Justin. I felt the same way about Bigfoot as you do until I started listen to Sasquatch chronicles podcast. People tell their bigfoot stories. It’s awesome to listen to on road trips. Anyways keep up the good work. My family and I love watching you guys.
Thanks for sharing! We're going on the open road in July.
We've been trying to make a trip out toward Crescent City sometime, and this made me want to plan the trip sooner 🤩 Love the redwoods!
Had to go back and rewatch the vid with Tony the train conductor. I forgot how hilarious he was. Thanks for this. I'm so confused now😆
Love this! So cool
Thanks for the great coverage from the rope drop to the final exit. Splash Mountain was one of my favorite rides. Sad to see it go.😢
Thanks for sharing Justin.. I just got back from Virginia City, had a blast..
Going in July I can't wait
I've been to the mystery spot, but dang, I REALLY need to go to confusion hill!
Hey Justin good vlog and thank you and keep up the good work you do love jari ❤❤
Fort bragg California the town I live in
Yes i love it up there redwoods 😁👍👍🙂 i went up there in 2004 went camping
The most confusing thing about Confusion Hill is trying to figure out what it so confusing.
Lots of fun.
Justin, you still got comedy! As I watched the 1st video til now, I enjoy them all. Please do more. #JustinScarredfaninNJ
Thank you!
@JustinScarred you're welcome.
You and Allie do alot weather together or you on the road by yourself, you get my #1 award for comedy in a video. I will be continuing to watch
One of my favorite road trip memories was when I was in Australia, driving from Brisbane up to Fraser Island. We stopped for lunch at what turned out to be a ginger themed amusement park complete with a Small World-esque boat ride. I had no idea it existed. Found out via a sign on the road.
Please let us know when the stickers are back in stock.
Thanks awesome place I enjoyed watching
Always feed your Ally....great advice!!!
Reminds me of the “World famous” 😂 Mystery Spot in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that’s been around since the early 1950’s. Haven’t been back there in probably over 30 years…but I bet it’s exactly the same as it was!
Love the video Justin trips videos tops alley so cool
IT'S THE HAUNTED SHACK!
I miss drive on 101 Hwy it's so pretty
I love the redwoods & oregon
I REALLY ENJOYED THESE SIGHTS.
Before 1920 there was NO connected road system to get from SF bay to the Oregon border just several disjointed
country roads serving the local counties. The north coast back in those days was supplied by ships sailing out of SF
Bay. Lots of people had been up to the north state. Loggers & fishermen & ships crewmen and all had spread stories
far and wide about the beauty and the great hunting & fishing to be had up there. BUT, finally, in 1920, the road from
Eureka to Sausalito was completed. In 1920 soldiers back from WW1 had returned home and all got a nice thank you
check from their Uncle Sam so a lot of those old soldiers headed up the new highway and setup roadside businesses
to take advantage of the still fairly new automobile business driving north building gas stations, campgrounds, road
side cafes & grocery stores and many added a roadside attraction such as the Chandler tree or a bear in a cage or
whatnot.
!
Justin we love your videos a lot, we actually have binging on you videos for awhile now, have laughed so hard, thanks I really needed that, just wanted to say bigfoot is real, when I lived in Cottonwood Ca. out on our property 30 years ago my son and his friend use to walk the rolling hill there, anyway the went to a pond to collect some fishing lures the had lost around the pond a there was a big foot there that chased them and they ran off and was able to get away from it, there is more to the story but that's a lot of texting, any way believe he is real, keep up the awesome videos, we love them, stay safe.
Haven’t been through there in years.Think it’s time to return.
Very entertaining!
You always make me laugh!! I really enjoy your episodes!!!
Best advice I have ever heard- Don't climb on bears 🐻Thanks Justin.
IT'S THE DRIVE THRU TREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S BIGFOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of the Bigfoot merchandise that you found in that one spot was Archie McPhee brand you should look further into it I think you'll be entertained by their other products
I LOVE U JUSTIN
It’s called vertigo…I get it when I go through places like that
In 2006 when I stopped there to buy a shirt I was the only person there and the man working tried to get me to try on the shirt and asked to get a look at my boobs!!!! Your video makes me want to give it another try! Traveling with you and Ally must be so fun! Thanks for making this. I’ve been wondering wtf that place was really about without the perv store guy! 🙃
As a graduate of Humboldt. Thanks
Wish I lived there
HIGHWAY 101!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Justin and Ally are the best.
The Trees of Mystery ? Paul N Babe !
Gravity Falls is considered old now? What does that make me, one foot in the grave?
💛 Banana Slugs! 💛
My redwoods. Mine.
Was the Smug Slug bit done twice on purpose??
I wondered the same thing then saw the big smug slug at the end then had to read the book to my 5yr old and omg that smug slug.
Those redwood chunks are correctly called cookies. Sheesh.
I just got so confused and a little nauseated 😮😅
Heh, Gravity Falls ain't for kids XD
Was this the place that had the Hobbit mini houses ?
Nope, that was a different attraction, filmed that one too : ruclips.net/video/j6DJZIsskpA/видео.html
These comments about supporting small businesses. Please keep saying it. Let it be said over and over until it sinks in.
38:48 But why does Bigfoot look like Hulk Hogan?
Because he's going to run wild on you! Brother!
Dear Justin please read my comment on last video about your van breaking down. The last one???
It didn't break down, it's been in the shop getting the long list of things I knew were wrong with it when I bought it fixed one by one.
If I owned the shop on Confusion Hill I would never leave a stick of incense burning as was shown. I'd worry an adult wouldn't see it and burn their arm when passing by. Or worse, a child burn her face. Or even worse, a running child fly into it with his eye. Or another possibility, someone deliberately or accidentally knocking it to the floor and burning the place down.
Umm the 101 highway runs from San Diego to Canada!! Look at a map…
Why don't you want there to be aliens?
Yep Yep ! I want to believe too! I think 🤔 they've 👽 been watching Justin 😂😮 Justin would say spooky!!! 👻 anyWho, supposedly ! they've been here many Time’s! But have decided, there's ! not any sign of intelligence life here yet !!! 😂🤣 thanks 🙏 Guys ! another entertaining fun video 👍
Subscribe and a unicorn gets its horn!
