Hi Emilie, I had a question in regards to captain and first officer flying relationship. We have had previous records of captains ignoring FO suggestions during emergency situations, which have lead to deadly crashes. How does a FO build a relationship, where the Captain is trusting of his FO and not think I am superior to you. Have you ever had any bad experiences with a Smarty pants Captain? Thank you 😊
Great great question. I don't think it's necessarily up to the FO, but moreso up to both crew members to have a mindset of positive CRM (Crew Resource Management). This mindset recognizes that not only can we all make mistakes, but that we are way more successful as a team, rather than alone. Knowing this, we can foster an environment of crews sharing responsibility for decision making and ultimately both coming to the best course of action, especially in an emergency scenario. I try to work on this daily with my Captains so that I can eventually become an effective one myself at leading my team to work together. And to answer your question: I have, but only a few times. It definitely leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you're working with a Captain who micromanages everything you do and undermines your capabilities. It's one thing to veto a decision that was poorly made or correcting an error that could lead to an unsafe situation. It's a different thing to 'correct' someone to do a certain thing the way YOU want it simply because of preference. There are always numerous ways to a safe outcome so I just remind myself that when I upgrade, I can hopefully make my FOs feel comfortable to always bring up any concerns or to challenge me when something doesn't make sense or I've made a mistake. Otherwise, if it doesn't truly make a huge difference why change it, does that make sense?
