    WATCH MORE: Radcliffe has definitely taken the quirkier route when it comes to his acting career. Meanwhile, newcomer Timothée Chalamet has become today's "soft" leading man. Here's our TAKE on the icon's career, so far: ruclips.net/video/gTxL2ShJXE8/видео.html

    He banked that Potter money and then took roles that he likes and wanted to do and that interested in him no matter how weird and unusual. I respect that. Better that than being typecast and pigeon holed into the same roles forever. You can show off range and ensure that you are genuinely fulfilled by a project or you can simply just have fun. Also congrats to Daniel on new fatherhood. I hope this new chapter in his life brings new and wonderful things.

    If you watch the whole video of his conversation with J.K. Rowling, Daniel says that he was thankful they shot the movies in the UK because in America child actors are stars first and children second, but in the UK child actors are treated as children first and stars second. I expect that’s a large reason he was able to remain so level-headed. It sounded like making a movie was a fun experience for the kids involved, rather than the horror stories we hear about children in Hollywood in the US.

    • @wildcatste
      @wildcatste Год назад +35

      Makes sense it seems like all the kids - at least Daniel Emma and Rupert have grown into well adjusted adults.

    • @imperfectxennial3008

      Most child actors in the US become drug addicts or spouse abusers and don’t live for long in adulthood.

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen Год назад +23

      I guess that's partly true, but he has also spoken about how tough the last years on Potter were and how he was literally drunk for big portions of the last films. He was able to overcome it, but that was more because of his network of friends and family rather than a huge structural difference in how child actors are treated. I'm sure people on Potter tried to take care of the kids but they have all spoken (Grint especially) about how strange and uprooting it was to be working like that from age 10.

    • @KiraFriede
      @KiraFriede Год назад +5

      @@katelijnesommen But the last Harry potter films were shot when they were already teens and of legal drinking age.

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen Год назад +6

      @@KiraFriede Yes, but I'm not exactly sure what your point is? I'm not saying they weren't legally allowed to drink. I'm saying Daniel himself has stated that he had a very serious alcohol problem as a response to the stress of growing up as he did, to the point where he was performing on set while completely drunk. He has said he can tell in which scenes he was drunk. He went to rehab and is now in recovery. He was a full-blown alcoholic at that stage and that really has nothing to do with the fact that he was over the legal drinking age.

  • @rosevirgo5095
    @rosevirgo5095 Год назад +492

    I find it disingenuous that you didn't mention his alcohol misuse issues during Harry Potter. He DID fall into the common pitfalls of child actors, but this doesn't diminish his success. In my opinion he is even more impressive for overcoming this. This should be celebrated, not hidden.

    • @vandelay159
      @vandelay159 Год назад +53

      Agreed, it's strange that they skipped it. It makes his story all the more inspiring.

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen Год назад +20

      Yes, very strange. It would only make this take stronger as he certainly struggled with not going the 'normal' child star route. He had to work hard to get sober and be able to build a life and career.

    • @FuzzyKittenBoots
      @FuzzyKittenBoots Год назад +3

      Didn’t his problem with alcohol start after he b came a legal adult though?

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen Год назад +7

      @@FuzzyKittenBoots Considering how bad his addiction was during the shooting of DH 1 and 2 (which he himself has said) it's probably safe to say the problem started developing earlier. But even if he was over 18, why does that matter? In his own words it was the pressure and stress of growing up in such a strange public way that led to his drinking. I don't really see how it matters much that he was a (legal but in all other senses very young) adult by the time the problem came to full fruition.

    • @FuzzyKittenBoots
      @FuzzyKittenBoots Год назад +2

      @@katelijnesommen Because if he is over 18 he isn’t a child star and I do t think he actually said that? What he said was that the stress from the franchise being about to *end* and how he didn’t know what to do with his career after having been part of an extremely successful franchise from the start of it. Not that the experience itself was negative.

  • @akirebara
    @akirebara Год назад +151

    It's a bit unfair to compare him to Ke Huy Quan in that shot, when Ke's career fizzled out because of Hollywood racism... It's generally not realistic to compare him to the Hollywood child stars, especially the older ones like Drew Barrymore and even Macauley Caulkin. Hollywood was more brutal then and they are American (millenial and gen z child actors successfully have transitioned to adulthood, though issues still exist, of course). Even his doppelganger Elijah Wood is not really of his generation, though i find they have a similar trajectory of Big Defining Franchise Role to small quirky movie.
    His peers are more the other British child stars of his generation who also turned out well after staring in blockbusters as kids (no one can rival the HP franchise of course): Freddie Highmore, Nicholas Hoult, Thomas Brody-Sangster, Asa Butterfield, and of course Tom Felton, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Can't believe you didn't mention the latter three!
    Being in the UK was a big part of the HP kids being more than okay. Maybe it's the water. Or maybe it's an industry that cares more for its child workers and trains them better too? Apart from that one kid who go arrested (he played Crabbe or Goyle?), the HP kids all turned out well on the surface. HP filming also meant they were rather isolated on the sets, coming out for premieres and promos and then returning to filming. As they said, they could barely fit in their other projects. That structure and being gainfully employed for a decade was helpful, I'm sure. Finally, his parents are in the industry and were very opposed to him even auditioning. This carried on to them being very careful that he was burning out (as he mentions briefly in the video).

    I would’ve loved much more explicit discussion of JK’s transphobia. But I will say that yes a big part of why I love Dan is because of his commitment as an ally to the whole LGBTQ community and he has been for years.
    And before someone comments “what bigotry?” I’m referring to JK lying about both trans people and transphobes for narrative, backing hate preacher Posie Parker after she was backed by nazis in Australia, donated £50k to attempt to sue stonewall with Allison Bailey (which failed) and her longstanding friendship and professional relationship with baroness Nicholson who is both a vocal homophobe who was against marriage equality and an opponent of trans rights.
    So in future when the inevitable millennial impulse to talk Harry Potter comes up from the take I would love some honesty and clarity on JK’s disgusting bigotry
