Why was American Bandstand only on USA Network for a single year before signing off for good in October 1989? I assumed that Dick Clark moved the show over there in order to give it a stable timeslot. The season prior, when they were in syndication (after Dick Clark took "AB" off of ABC in protest of them reducing the show to an half an hour), there was no telling when and where the show came on in your area. My best guess is that Dick Clark no longer hosting the show hurt the show a great deal. Without Dick appearing on camera (he was still the executive producer), "AB" just now felt like any other dance show of its era like "Dance Party USA" or "Club MTV". I wonder what would've happened if Dick stuck around for one more year to help with the transition to USA and maybe have David Hirsch as his co-host. Then, when Dick stepped down, the audience would've been more accepting of Hirsch, since he was already being groomed on-camera as Dick's successor.
I was 13, too! And it was 2 weeks after the first and last time I was forced to go to school on a Saturday! Saturday April 1, 1989! And it was not an April Fools joke, either!
@Adam Stabelli Well, it certainly gave him more time to focus on the thing he loved: Dick Clark's Rock, Roll, and Remember. And the thing that paid the bills: Countdown America with Dick Clark.
I don't have a definitive answer for why they went with an outdoor set. I'm guessing that this was Dick Clark and company's attempt at "freshen up" the show's look and atmosphere to coincide with their move to USA. At the time, I don't think that any other dance shows like "Soul Train", "Club MTV", or "Dance Party USA", were filming outdoors. So this was presumably meant to further set "AB" a part from the competition.

@@leighburton832 Why did you have to go to school on Saturday?
@@good03boy Probably for detention, I imagine.
OK, question: Why did they go to an outdoor set and drop Dick Clark? Was USA just cheap, or what?
