More like bullshido code. There was no such code in Toranaga’s time. It was bored samurai with no war experience who came up with it. The same phenomenon can be seen in today’s militaries (see peacetime vs wartime unwritten rules). During peace time, great emphasis is placed on basic military stuff like dress and appearance and good behavior. During war time, a lot of that is tossed to the side in favor of a battle-ready force.
I bet this man is the ancestor of Oishii Yoshio from 47 Ronin, Ujio from the Last Samurai and that Hotel Manager from John Wick Saga. They're all badass.
The seating arrangement was for the psychological effect, or the hope of such. How you handle that is to be so focused that, when addressing a specific person, you ignore everyone else, even peripherally. You don't respond to even a question that they pose until you have finished responding to the first person. This will prevent you from having the sense of being overwhelmed or outnumbered. I speak from experience here when I had multiple interviewers at one table. It works.
The samurai's request to commit seppuku hit Toranaga. For the sake of honor, he must permit this, but he knows that he is losing a good man. While he should not have put himself in such a situation, being outnumbered where he was, I respect the fortitude for standing up for his Lord. The gesture definitely demonstrated that he and Toranaga were kindred spirits. Toranaga shows this with his subtle smile when Blackthorn says, "Unless I win." Even though both were outnumbered.
Historically Ochiba no Kata always said the Toranaga clan was nothing more than a glorified clan. Plain and simple, we decapitate and rule Japan with whatever is left. They make anybody and everybody into a samurai over there. And the Anjin thing, the man harbors a barbarian. Five fucking regents and we got this other pygmy thing over in the Toranaga clan.
"A samurai has respect for all people, even his enemies. Without this outward show of respect, we are no matter than animals"- The Bushido Code.

Notice that reacted as well. She was the assassin I bet that cut Blackthorn and Toranaga killed later.
isnt this the osaka branch manager from John wick 4 ?
lols man just got accused and excommunicado in a totally different show.
Why the samurai that interrupts looks like a samurai Leon from Snowfall 😂😂😂😂
But because he is Samurai, I am sure that he wasn't intimidated. He would not want to, but would have fought if had to, even to the death.
Time to do remake of Tai-pan and Noble House
このただよしっていう小太りの俳優の演技、下手じゃない?刀を抜こうとする動作とか特に。
