  • ‪@MarkWintleFishing‬ It's late June and I had hoped that hemp and tares would work on the lower Dorset Stour but although I had one nice roach on tares it took a bait switch to find the fish.

Can I ask what are your thoughts about the sink rate of loose fed hemp the river stretch i fish tends to be 10ft to 12ft deep i am struggling to get my bait into the area close enough up the swim with most bites coming well down the peg,any thoughts on how sink rate of hemp affects where majority of your bites come.I seem to catch most fish six to 12 inches off bottom, are you fishing tares at full depth generaly.

Hemp should sink a bit quicker than maggots which, if I remember rightly, sink at about 8 seconds per foot of depth. This means that in all but the slowest of flows the hemp is likely to be well down the swim before hitting bottom in a deep swim. I tend to choose shallower swims for hemp and tares though I have caught on both fishing shallow in deep water e.g. at 3ft deep in 10 foot of water. Generally I've caught just off the bottom though many years ago I used to fish a swim where I would cast in with the float set well over depth using tares and put the rod in a rest and lay on. I didn't get many roach but those I did get were big ones up to 2lbs.
