    Get out, with the cost of gas, hotels, supplies, can everyone afford that? Who wants to risk robbery? Opportunists are everywhere to capitalize. From price gouging to theft.
    My heart aches for those affected. The insurance cartel robbed us blind.

    I still don't understand why people are still near the marina, i still remember when Typhoon Haiyan lands it's first bands on Philippine shores the storm surge was so extreme that it flooded immediately under 5 minutes with the height of 4 meters. The water surge is what killed more than 6,000 people that time.

    • @kitty_s23456

      Yes. For coastal areas, only those who were on the 3rd floor of buildings were saved. Those who were on the 1st & 2nd floor all drowned due to the storm surge. There was one evacuation center (gym of a school) wherein lots of people died. Even the local officials didn't expect the surge - they used the gym as a shelter, thinking that it was safe. This was in late 2013.

    • @jannibal9273
      @jannibal9273 3 часа назад +5

      Do you have a storm shelter? I assume in Iowa you would because of the possibility of derechos and tornadoes, or a basement of solid brick, stone or concrete block foundation underneath your home. But staying at an already destroyed home from a possibly 15 foot storm surge and winds of 130 mph or stronger - on top of all the uncollected debris that Florida didn't have time to clean up that was caused by Helene flying in the air, but saying you aren't leaving. When humans dare Mother Nature, they usually lose.

    2:07 Son... be honest with yourself and the public. Admit you have nowhere to go, or don't have the means to go... but it has nothing to do with fixing your home. A home that is most likely going to be hit again. Nobody with any sense would fix anything when another storm is on track to strike again.
    If you need help getting out ask for that help. But don't be trying to make this something it is not. You will lose, and you will have only yourselves to blame.

    I don't understand people who stay and then become problems for the emergency rescue staff in the storm's aftermath. The couple interviewed had a car sitting there and nothing to stop them loading up what food they have, filling some bottles with water and, heading out to safety. Even if they have to live in a public shelter for a few days before they are able to return, it's better than staying in a property that clearly doesn't look capable of withstanding a hurricane.

And now we're bracing for Hurricane Milton. We need $119,000 in structural repairs from Ian and I just hope we will be ok. We're starting to feel feeder bands coming through. We are in the process of suing our insurance company for not paying for our repairs. We're living with black mold which affects my health. Something needs to be done about the insurance industry here. Either you cannot even get it or it's so expensive you can't afford it. Ours went up $4,000 and yet we haven't even seen a dime from a hurricane that tore our home over two years ago. The court system has now pushed our case to end of January 2025. It's such a messed up problem down here and something needs to change. A lot of people are being pushed out of their homes because they can't afford the rate hikes. And I know several people who no longer have bank mortgages on their homes who've decided to drop their insurance all together.

    Besides adapting to climate change, which is here and a reality, we need to stop how we're living and mend this poor planet, our common home. There are wars being fought by humans right now around the world, and now the world is at war with us--from our own doing.

    I never understood the way of American house building. In Germany, although far less endangered by destasters caused by extrem wheather conditions, our houses a build with bricks, most have a basement half in the ground, sturdy roofing and whatever. Before you can start building, you have to send your construction plan in for approval, it being checked by experts like architects, if the rules are applied and safety standards met. It can be APITA and everybody complains about bureaucracy, but in the end, houses mostly last for generations.

    • @samsmom1491

      A basement in Florida is rare due to the high water levels underground. Bricks in a hot high humidity environment isn't realist either. There are solutions, but parts of Florida will eventually become inhabitable to live there.

It's to be expected we'll have something similar to North Carolina in the Ozark Mountains or maybe along the Mississippi River in the next few years. Decades ago, climate scientists predicted mega hurricanes and more extreme weather events. Republicans refused then and still refuse to acknowledge that science, and not science fiction & conspiracy theories, is what will save our lives.

      Overall in 2020, Trump recieved 6/10 of white voters in Florida. Amongst white men, 65% voted for Trump.
      Acceptance in climate change in Florida is actually at 90% (surprisingly). I can assure you that the state is not 90% Democrats. The disagreement among party lines lies in the attribution for its cause. Natural vs. Human influence.

      So, the government is responsible for the severity of a storm? Also, when you really come down to it, why should the government cover all your expenses for any loss you may accrue? Isn't that why people have insurance? (Not that you can get flood insurance at a reasonable price.) The government is responsible for repairing the infrastructure and they choose to help people financially, not because they are by law required to, but because they want to. (even though it's the peoples money). This is how a democratic government is supposed to work.
