    I love it when hikers show interest in the places they visit, and actually know something about the history. Most hikers walk have no idea where they are, even if they are hiking through their own backyard. But Jay doesn’t disappoint. An American showing interest in Emden, off all places, Emden in the rain... the beauty of that.

      Ha! We saw you're from nearby. I just happened to be here because Tina's family lives here. The only thing it doesn't have anywhere nearby are mountains... or any altitude at all really.

    • @horizontaal

      @@JayWandersOut no mountains indeed. But very nice with a little bit of altitude (dunes) are the Wadden Islands. I love Schiermonnikoog, Ameland, Terschelling and Vlieland (all Dutch). But the German islands are nice too. A very tiny but monumental town close by is Bourtange. Enjoy your stay here, and a happy New Year!

    Glad you guys are doing well and in a safer place during this pandemic. Looks like a really nice place. I really love and miss Germany. I think you should let Tina open the calendars in the future. 😉

      The slots in the Lindt calendar were so small it usually took me forever to dig that little ball out. I definitely like the children one better.

      Frohes Neues to you as well! I couldn't believe how any fireworks were going off everywhere and for so long when they were supposedly banned. They even went off last night here and there. Hope you have a good 2021!

    I grew up in Emden, my mom and aunt still live there. I could not get back to Germany over a year because of Covid 19. I am planning to visit Emden as soon as restriction is eased.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 года назад +1

      Hopefully that'll be soon! Even with family you're not allowed to enter?

      @@JayWandersOut Sorry, I was not specific. By easing restriction I meant that we can travel freely anywhere without rules or less rules. I am a German citizen and can enter anytime.
      Another concern is that I could catch the virus during my trip back and become asymptomatic without knowing, and my mom is already in her 80's.
      I currently work in Taiwan, one of the few country with almost no local cases. Taiwan was never under lock-down since the beginning of the pandemic. Business and schools are open as usual. It is easy to leave, but it would be very difficult to reenter Taiwan.
      It is very nice of you making a video presentation of my hometown Emden. Very well done. Thank you.
      I hope you have tried our "belegtes Brötchen"? It is similar to a subway sandwich, but much smaller. Ostfriesland (engl. East Frisia) make the best Brötchen or German bun and other pastries.
      35 to 40 years ago, Emden was very lively. The city center was filled with lots of people and shops. The economy started to struggle when a military barracks was closed, a few years later Volkswagen reduced hiring workers. Most young people of my generation started to move to other cities after finishing Highschool.
      However, Emden is a nice stay for some days for recreation.
      Stay safe

      I'm not sure if they have it there but in every base I was at we had an on base hotel where family could stay for super cheap. In case you're up for that. However, living out in the town would definitely be more immersive and a quicker trip to get out and about. Hope you get your chance as well.

    My great grandparents who were jewish lived here before ww2. Haven't been there myself but nice to see someone showing a town that means a lot to my family.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 года назад

      It's a beautiful town. We even saw the mayor out on a walk along the wall so I said hi to him! Life must have been tough for your grandparents. The Stolperstein video really goes over some examples of what happened to Jewish people that lived there. It's so sad.

      @@JayWandersOut Amazing Jay! Just checked out the video now, and Hans who was sent to Sweden is my grandfather :) How beautiful to see, really warmed my heart. Can tell you that he was one of the kindest people in the world and my hero growing up. But he never wanted to talk much about his past.

    For how long have you been living there? Would you recommend Emden for younger people to live there for a year?

    • @kimyang8492
      @kimyang8492 3 года назад

      I am originally from Emden. Emden is not a recommended town for young people, there is not much to do. The next bigger cities are quite far. Most people work for Volkswagen here, otherwise at the harbor. Emden is not a popular tourist city either.
      If you are looking for a city or town for younger people, the best cities would be cities with a (popular) University. We call them "Studentenstadt", student/college city or town. We have plenty of them in Germany.

    💦 Statue 😄. So I am not sure. If I see you sometime and see a VW🐞, am I suppose to yell Slug bug and slug you in the arm? Sad all the bombing, Thankx for the look around. I didn’t understand the Calendar thing at before you showed one. My impression was you on a different day go to a different treat shop in town and get a treat, or buy a treat. But it sounds like that misconception would be a good for business idea.

      The advent calendar has a long history, dated back in the 1850's. Little children could not wait for Christmas and they had asked their parents every day when Christmas was coming. Because the young children couldn't count, the parents put up an Advent Calendar for them and told them to open one door every day and when they reach the last door, that would be Christmas Eve.
