Disney's Ratigan also was voiced by Vincent Price, an open bi actor. :D I just want to give support to my bi peeps as a sapphic or gay bean. XD Please have a good rest of your day Rowan (your hair color so beautiful ^*_*^ Yet it makes sense as you are =D ) and whoever else reads this.
Hey Rowan you're really smart I need to ask you something. What do you do when you find out the sponsor of your video is a handful of tech bros and a ton of venture capitalists using data from hedge funds to repackage cap and trade for the consumer market? This video was awesome tho thank you for it
@@mhawang8204 Speaking of wasted opportunities in Once Upon A Time, Emma and Regina are LITERALLY raising a son together, and so much of especially the early seasons are centered around their dynamic
hm, she did technically interact with the witch. Aand she also smiled at a maid (before she enters the hall where her family is having supper and Fergus is telling a story). Also, while parcouring down the stairs right in the beginning of "Touch the sky", she waves at a... wait, is that the same one?? I was going to say that it probably doesn't help much but, being a nerd I am, I could not not try to help, BUT it's the only person from all the servants Merida pays attention to (apart from Maudie who... Whose name she knows). Sooooo, technically she does show more interest in this maid than in all of her grooms combined, does she?..
Li Shang's actor, BD Wong (who is gay IRL) has said he considers Li to be sexually fluid, being very supportive of the idea of fluidity and fluidity readings of sexuality and gender in general. Obviously he's just the actor and this is far from the first time a Disney actor was more progressive then the company, but according to Jurassic Park, BD Wong can clone dinosaurs so honestly I'm more then willing to take his word on this!
One of the writers of Mulan confirmed that after Mulan saves Shang from the avalance, they originally had a line saying, "Ping if you were a girl, I could kiss you." Of course since this is Disney, they said no.
I’d say he’s demisexual. He falls for a specific someone he connects with and it didn’t matter whether Ping/Mulan was a guy or girl or trans or gender fluid. He never really asked what Mulan’s deal was (all he knows is she’s a crossdresser) before trying to ask her on a date which is why it makes me think that.
Personally I read Remy as ace. Not just cause he doesn't have a love interest, but every time Linguini is being lovey-dovey about Colette he like rolls his eyes like "yea cool dude, but I wanna cook. let's focus" (with the obvious exeption being the scene where he makes them kiss, which he only does to like keep cover. that scene also makes me feel like he doesn't put the same value on sensuality and romance as others, seeing it as a tool rather than something big and meaningful, which I relate to a lil lmao).
Trans and ace are not mutually exclusive, (nor are ace and gay, ace and bi, or other such permutations since romantic orientation, gender, and sexuality are three separate things, not to mention the ace spectrum itself)
Yes I agree the cat lady from treasure planet turned me gay. Fun fact though, apparently in a line that got cut from the final script it mentioned that the kids that she has with the doctor at the end were actually given birth to by him
okay but you can’t forget the best of those disney best friends who are definitely gay, riley and maya from girl meets world. like there was a whole recurring joke that was just people saying “they love each other! they’re gonna marry each other!” like they both are supposed to have a crush on the same guy, but literally whenever possible they say that they would choose each other over the guy in a heartbeat. it’s literally a plot point that maya only started liking the guy because she loves riley and wants to make sure he’s good enough for her, like come on. they gave each other rings. they have pet names for each other. you cannot tell me they’re not girlfriends
@@iexistsomehow5718 Cory (Riley's dad) and his best friend Shawn had a relationship very much along those lines. Topanga (Cory's girlfriend) said a few times that Shawn loved Cory more than she did. She says that even in their wedding day, which btw, Cory is only able to attend after making up with Shawn. Reason of the fight? Shawn was afraid of losing Cory after the marriage... I mean They kinda had an Abed/Troy relationship in the sense of a lot of recurring jokes implying they're a couple. Like, there's an episode Cory thinks Shawn is interested in Topanga, so he asks Angela (Shawn's girlfriend) if "Shawn ever called the name 'Topanga' when he's with Angela" to which she answers "No, but he called the name 'Cory'". Or in earlier seasons, when Shawn was dating a girl who didn't want him to be friends with Cory, so Shawn stops talking to him, but they have this phone call that is meant to mimic a couple taking like "I just wanted to hear your voice", etc... It was a lot, both in jokes like these and in actual more emotional moments. GMW is basically a rewriting (a homage if you will) of BMW, so Riley and Maya's friendship is meant to mirror Cory and Shawn's. They used the same trope of "The rebelious friends and The savior friend" and their dynamics is also very similar. Though in my opinion, GMW did a toned down version of Cory/Shawn, in terms of complexity.
You may recall that in the scene where Kuzco is in drag, he and Pacha are posing as newlyweds. The waitress tells them, "Congratulations on coming out in public." Which can be interpreted many ways. In the Icelandic dub, however, she says, "Congratulations on coming out of the closet." I mean...
the reason is because joking about gayness used to be a non touchy subject and men and women were aloud to dress in whatever without being labeled as gay.
Lmao Is that even up for debate? I mean even Yao, Ling, and Chien Po seem to notice that there was something going on between those two at certain points in the movie. It was rather clear that Shang was blossoming an attraction towards "ping". When Mulan was injured and her secret was revealed I don't fully buy that Shang didn't kill her simply because he was repaying a debt, I think that was part of it. But for the most part it's because he had formed a strong bond and attachment to Ping/Mulan. And couldn't bring himself to do it. Also when Mulan started showing feelings towards Shane while posing as ping, he does give her a few weird looks but he doesn't get uncomfortable or try to keep his distance from her. I think it's safe to say that Shang is either bisexual or pansexual, but maybe isn't fully aware of it because there wasn't enough time before Mulan's identity was revealed.
Riley from Inside out was non binary. In the mums head, it was only (coded) women as the emotions, and in the dads head is was only (coded) men. In Rileys head, their emotions were of varying genders. (Side note: I actually dont know if this is disney or not, but I have very strong feelings about it)
Riley is TOTALLY nonbinary. I know the suits claim it's, like, just because she's young or whatever -- but all the other young people we see have monogendered emotions as well. She's one of ours. 💛🤍💜🖤
I’ve always found it weird how when u see in every other head they have their emotions the same as their own gender besides Riley. I thought it was just some continuity error but I’m fully excepting this as my head canon now,
I'm a lesbian & Elsa doesn't *feel* super lesbian to me, I think she reads more as aro/ace. She's the "ice queen" after all, I can't imagine her longing for a romance.
I personally think Elsa is Ace, and I also feel like giving her a romantic relationship would undercut the whole message of true love not having to be romantic love…would I accept Anna as being Bi though….absolutely
Specifically Treasure Planet Jim Hawkins is one of the most transmasc characters i have ever seen. I present the lyrics of Im Still Here: " I wanna tell you who I am, Can you help me be a man" "How can the world want me to change, they're the ones that stay the same"
yeah, it's been a few months, but Dove responded to a few persons asking about her characters and most asked about the sexuality of some of her character. From what I remember that she said: Ruby (AoS) is ace and Mal is pan. I think she said something about Maddie and Liv but I don't remember
Always saw Elsa more as aromantic asexual than lesbian, though might just be wishful thinking from an aroace. Mulan had a lot of potential as non-binary.
i feel like its pretty unlikely that you'll see this but when you mentioned the lgbtdisneyheadcanons tumblr my heart STOPPED. I WAS ONE OF THE MODS!! me and the rest of the "team" (like the 3 other 14 year olds i was running it with lmao) abandoned it in like 2016 i wanna say but hearing that here was CRAZY?? Anyway I'm glad its existence supported your point of "queer kids want this rep, not just adults" bc yeah!! we did!!
The fox and the hound is a star crossed lovers story with a somewhat bittersweet end. And no one could have told three and half year old me differently, who was upset that they didn’t get married in the end.
YO SAME, when I was a kid I didn't like that the fox got a gf and I didn't understand why. Now I realize it's because I'm a gay trans man who saw it as a love story on some level lol
It’s not a love story??? I haven’t watched it since I was a small child but I 100% remembered it as a love story about a hunting dog and a fox who fall in love
Ok but also to add to the Timon and Pumbaa headcannon, in the Lion Guard TV show they adopt another child, a Honey Badger named Bunga. They have a whole episode dedicated to Simba and Bunga getting lost/trapped together and deciding that they're brothers. Also Timon and Pumbaa spend the whole episode freaking out that their babies are missing.
May I present to the jury the case of Evelyn Deavor from Incredibles 2? I mean, even if you haven't seen the movie (most of which she spends FULLY hitting on Elastigirl and sitting in chairs incorrectly), literally google a single picture and tell me that's not a raging homosexual. She would have fit the categories of 'villains' (sorry if that's a spoiler, but also her name is literally Evil Endeavor, soo), 'vibes' AND 'there is no straight explanation for this'. Because there simply isn't.
Honestly Elastagirl/Helen too, she reads to me as very bi. Like a bi housewife who is seen as straight because she's in a straight-presentung relationship with her husband. There just feels like there's a duality to Helen, like she has literally talked about having a past and there being things that Bob does not know about her (which she says when he finds out she can ride motorcycle and she says she used to have a mowhawk lmao). And there was def romantic tension between her and Evelyn
@@Lisa_Flowers It was through that comment of hers that I learned the "mohawk" haircut was older than I thought. I had figured it being a recent thing, invented alongside the punk movement of the 1980s, but among white people, it goes back to before WW2!
No one in the atlantis crew was straight like no one. The bad guy was a Villain With Bi Vibes, Hilda was a sex neutral ace, Explosions guy was gay, Milo was a Bi Nerd, i could go on
OK, but while we're on Disney queer couples, my eyes have recently been opened to the Buford/Baljeet pairing. The show mostly focuses on their friends/enemies balance, but Buford in particular has a LOT of feelings for Baljeet. Baljeet isn't exactly a stranger to those himself. And in the timeskip kind of finale, Buford is ... well, let's just say the signs are there. EDIT: Also, there is Candessa. Like ... Vanessa was shipped with three different guys and none of them thrill me, and Jeremy is just an incredibly white bread character. Those two have BIG chemistry every time they are on screen and I just think they'd work, IDK
As a marine biologist, it will never not make me mad that Disney decided to make Marlin from Finding Nemo a clownfish and then wimp out on the transgender transformation after Coral dies. There are plenty of heteronormative tropical fish species in the sea, Disney. You're the ones who chose to use a polyandrous, sequential hermaphrodite species where the biggest male of the colony becomes a female when the previous female dies. Commit to your premise!
@@thebutterfluffman6855 Well, sorry to break it to you but these speaking, thinking, metaphorical fish with eyes that humans find cute aren't "just fish". If you want "just fish", go watch a documentary.
@@elektra121 no documentary fish don't talk, they also aren't funny. I just don't think Disney thought far into it, it cute fish movie about fish and there fish problems.
For the Disney Channel segment, theres a whole arc in Wizards of Waverly Place where Alex becomes very close with a character named Stevie, played by Hayley Kiyoko
I love this! I feel like that perfectly fits so many of these moments. As someone who is straight, I don't inherently catch the queer potential in a lot of media. I instead see the strength of friendship in a lot of these cases or enjoy the allowance of expression of a confidently Cis-gendered, straight person outside of society's norms. Then hearing queer people online talk about their takes I'm like, "I don't see it, but also do." Mulan and yentl are especially strong examples for me
The Hannah Montana bit got me and made me imagine that in the canonical world of Hannah Montana there’s probably people who analyzed her songs like the other side of me and decided she was gay and had to hide it, only to be crushed by her going on a talk show to “come out” as brunette.
I headcanon Elsa and Merida as aroace. Mostly as aromantic. Though I aso love the possibility of the possibility of Else being a lesbian aroace, all three at the same time. I love the arrow ace joke about Merida.
what does aroace lesbian mean? i thought aroace meant that a person mostly doesn’t experience attraction/ seek out romantic or sexual relationships /gen
@@atomichearts9332 basically romance is very nebulous and romantic attraction is generally harder to pin down than sexual attraction. some aro spec people occasionally feel romantic attraction, some a romantic people feel other forms of attraction (aesthetic, queerplatonic etc) and may use the term lesbian to show that they are a woman who feels some form of attraction to women. it’s hard to define but i hope that makes sense?
@@musicbyella3769 thank you so much for taking time to explain it to me :-) i know i could just look it up, but especially with more marginalized identities i would rather hear it from those people, or people with knowledge on the subject. idk i’m bad at explaining but basically thank you, you explained it rly well
Wait weren’t Jumba and Pleakley already a couple? I thought it since I saw the movies as a kid, and I saw Pleakly was clearly gender non-conforming (he presented very feminine sometimes and even called himself a woman when he was playing a role) before even knowing lgbtqia+ was a thing Also Cogsworth and Lumiere are so obviously dating why isn’t this canon
if they're dating their poly, Honestly I like them better as platonic lifemates tbh. but I like the idea that cogs would be cool with lumier's much younger hot broom-girlfriend.
from one gay to another, i love when youre just like “vibes obvi” and im just thinking “well ofc” hahaha also love this hair, i actually gasped when i clicked on the video
God you’re so right about trans Remy but i was so hoping you’d go a little more into the queer themes of Ratatouille overall. Remy’s whole character arc, his arguments with his dad, the themes of difference but also acceptance present throughout the whole movie, Remy being automatically seen as lesser than his fellow cooks for what he is, the way Remy really doesn’t care at all for Linguini and Colette’s romance, there’s sooo much to read into that may not be direct evidence or could be read more as race/class issues but then, it’s not just the humans that Remy has to get acceptance from, but also his rat family. Remy throughout the film feels different and other around both these groups, and only finds success and happiness when he’s accepted both by the humans and by the rats for who he is. Also just, like, Remy’s whole vibe. Anyway my point is Disney let me make a Ratatouille animated series and give Remy a rat boyfriend
Ok but Spinelli was literally one of my favourite characters when I was a kid. Also her rejection of the name "Ashley" basically led to that being my chosen name (along with a couple other inspirations) I have to rewatch Recess sometime lol
It's all on Disney plus! I've been rewatching it with my kid and to be honest, for a junk/filler after school cartoon... It has REALLY stood the test of time. My kid LOVED it
Spenelli was actually ok with her name Ashley. The only reason she has a problem with it is because of a group of snobs who are also named Ashley. Aka the Heathers parody. If it wasn’t for them Spenelli probably wouldn’t mind her first name.
@@moondivine2288 Oh I don't doubt that (its been ages since I've watched it). Nonetheless, that episode was formative to my understanding of a prefered name based on a specific social climate/classification. Like for example I don't completely dislike my birthname, but the gender connotations of it don't line up with who I am, if that makes sense. I feel like the name Ashley was, to Spinelli, a reminder of a way she might be made to be part of a group she doesn't identify with, in a very similar way to trans people and birth names.
I like to think Mike is in a poly relationship with he and Sully in a queerplatonic relationship [with Sully being aromantic] and he and Celia in a romantic one. Maybe the three live together post film. It's a nice thought to me anyways.
the Raya trailer came on when I (agender aroace) and my friends (lesbian and bi woman) were watching TV and we all gasped when Namari came on screen from a combination of wow she's attractive in a very queer way and wow I wish I looked that gay
I never thot about how Mulan didn’t feel accepted as a girl or a boy 🤔 Also I didn’t release I shipped London and Maddie as a child till literally just now XD (they had the best chemistry)
I misheard "suspicious" as "cis-picious" and now I can't stop laughing. "There's no heterosexual explanation for this" and "vibes" sums up my current DnD character too well. He's a changeling bard that is the demisexual poster child for the "be gay, do crimes" motto. His friendly-misread-as-flirting escapades did get us close enough to a local merchant to grift for a magic item, so no one in the party is complaining, lol. Also, as a DM who has a tansmasc wererat NPC in their game, I fully support Remy's whole deal. I'm gonna have to go read that study now...
Wow, your charecter sounds awesome! I, myself, have a similar problem, meaning that both as a player and as a Dm I found that I have very little heterosexual charecters when almost everyone is queer (I can think of, maybe, three heterosexual charecters at the moment who actually matter to the story). I am still questioning my sexuality, but I think this is a sign for me...
@@shirakrause8160 It's funny that when I was younger, I used to feel like something was wrong with me for wanting to focus on writing lgbt+ characters. Hell, I even tried to steer myself away from that a couple times, but all my attempts didn't last for long. One that stands out to me was a story I wrote between a vampire hunter and a vampire who got along long enough to see where the other was coming from and why they would act antagonistic towards each other and... yeah my attempt to write the straight and narrow got gay SUPER fast with that one! 🤣 All of those writing projects did help me figure out my own situation, and I feel a lot happier after letting go of that anxiety that I had to have a 'quota' of straight people to be taken seriously as a writer. I wish you so much luck on your journey of self discovery! Also, campaign update: we seem to have a running gag of NPCs having strong reactions to my bard. It ranges from a giant construct convinced they're a wizard trying to -kidnap- adopt him as a familiar, to a queer coded mafia drow man blatantly flirting with him *just* to piss off his coworker. Said coworker's protesting is less homophobia and more "Stop flirting with the twink who robbed me."
@@pLanetstarBerry wow, thank you! I think I'm in a similar position as you, and the more I think about it the more I notice I'm probably a lesbian (or bi/pan... My lesbian bard has been flirted with by men a couple of times and she was mostly oblivious, but when she noticed she would always troll them. It actually lead to one of the funniest moments of our campaign so far.
In middle school I wrote a Ratigan x Basil fanfiction as a joke because a group of friends and I had been memeing on the movie, this video brought back those horrible memories.
I'm not saying that raya and the last dragon is a gay love story, but I'm just saying that if you told me that the story started as a gender flipped aang/zuko avatar the last airbender fan fic...... I wouldn't be surprised.
You jest, but there is/was an AU Avatar fanfiction (not gender flipped, just world without an avatar) where the end result was the resurrection of the dragons to defeat the Fire Nation and Aang and Zuko were lovers. The worst part is that it scarily works... Like, remove the pieces where Aang is the last of his people, expand the nations to 5, and cut out all the mature content, it's horrifyingly similar. It doesn't have Aang and Zuko know each other for years, but it does have like a chapter of misunderstood intentions.
I've never seen Descendants but I do know it's directed by Kenny Ortega - who is out - and who also directed High School Musical (and Newsies, which, if you want a very gay musical about labor organizing of all things, is DELIGHTFUL) . He most recently directed Julie and the Phantoms, which means he *finally* got to direct some teen media which has actual out characters in a relationship (probably because it's for Netflix rather than Disney). There was an interview with him around the time it came out - I don't remember the exact quite, but he basically said he hasn't intentionally made everything he's directed very gay, but he does see facets of himself in everything so it's not *not* gay, either. Anyway - this was a delight, as always!
I've always seen Baloo and Baghera from The Jungle Book as ex-partners that had a thing but didn't work out in the past due to how absolutely different we're are, until Mowgli comes along and as they both try to ensure his safety, they learn to see the good in each other again and decide to give each other another chance by the end as they walk into the sunset while singing "Bare Necessities"
Riley from Inside Out is nonbinary. This is because all other characters that have their inner feelings depicted only have emotions that fit their gender expression or assigned gender. Riley on the other hand has emotions that are depicted by characters that span many different places on the gender spectrum. This can go way more deep, but that is the basic idea.
Other Disney gays that deserved to be gay: Eric Matthews and Jack Hunter from Boy Meets World Also I’m crying over your kittens. They are beautiful and perfect 😭❤️
I fancied Captain Amelia as a kid and now I'm a lesbian, so I can confirm. Also, speaking of queer pirates: shout out to my favorite gender-fluid/NB pirate King Lizzie Swann - from "proper governor's daughter" and "lady" to cabin boy to a literal pirate king (not queen, *king*)
on the other hand it's quite respectable and cool for a woman to fill traditionally male coded social roles and still remain firmly a woman, that's rad also and I do like to see it. one doesn't have to be nb to be nonconfirming
@@CelticBotansDigitalArt cool I totally feel you. And I don't wanna have to sacrifice! Like I want more passionate male friendship AND more gays, l want more romantic ladyfriends AND more lesbians, I want more nb but also more low gender interest peeps and ace but ALSO very thirsty chars that also just have their priorities strait.
Another curious detail: Ratigan was voiced by Vincent Price, a great actor known for his villainous roles. According to his daughter, he had relationships with men as well as women and was probably bisexual.
Characters appearing in the video thumbnail (from left to right): • Remy, from _Ratatouille_ • Li Shang, _from Mulan_ • Rowan Ellis, from _RUclips_ • Elsa, from _Frozen_ • Parappa the Rapper, from _Parappa the Rapper_
Isn't the last one actually the tomboy from Disney's Great Break or whatever that series is called in English. The one where the intro starts with a ringing school bell
I actually think unless specifically stated we shouldn’t care or but labels on characters sexualities. For me one of the good reasons to watch a show is to learn about characters and people who are different than me.
I'd totally watch videos like this on Star Wars (Poe and Finn, obviously) or Marvel (don't even get me started), or non-Disney cartoons like A:TLA, which is pretty agressively hetero on the surface but has characters I've always felt could be read as bi (Ty Lee and Zuko) or lesbian or ace (Toph and Azula), plus Sokka has a whole arc about combating internalized misogyny and basically the whole show is about social outcasts carrying on the legacies of deceased loved ones while finding solace in found family.
I personally headcanon Merida as demiromantic (still technically on the aro spectrum, so thankfully the pun still works). She doesn’t necessarily reject the idea of marriage as a whole; rather, she wants to hold off on getting married to be allowed the time to get to know the male heirs better and choose which one she has the strongest connection with. The movie isn’t long enough, nor does it focus on that aspect, so we don’t get to see the continuation of that storyline, but I wouldn’t be surprised or upset if she did eventually end up getting married.
Your perspective makes a lot of sense for Merida! Someone else mentioned here that Belle could be demi as well, and it's nice to see some people bringing up demiromanticism since it's often not talked about that much!
Ok so in Seeing Red, I know they confirm that one of Mei's friends is a lesbian, and I think they confirm that another one is bi (or just like a huge ally), but Tyler also gives off huge gay best friend vibes. Also, just look at how excited he gets for that boy band. Really wish they would have had him awkwardly bump into another boy at the concert, and have that shy "we see eachother" moment, because that is a totally relatable queer experience.
The only one I thought was a significant omission was Carlos from Descendants. He'd go under, there is no heterosexual explanation for his fashion sense. One background character I've never seen anyone mention; in Onward one of the 'nice kids' is a Cyclops Boy with braces and a rainbow pin. (And Corey is definitely queer-coded)
Elsa and Merida are my badass asexual icons in my headcannon. I always considered Elsa as homoromantic ace. We aces need more asexual representation that don't play into common ace stereotypes that asexuals are emotionally stunted our broken.
Wall-e or any other robot would, in my opinion, be excellent candidates for transgender characters because-as you pointed out-very little about them serves to indicate any gender. As such, robots provide an opportunity to comment on the arbitrary nature of gender assignment. One could ask, “what makes the robot trans if there was nothing making it a boy or girl in the first place?” and stumble onto some insight about humans in the process. This might have been exactly what you were saying but it seemed revelatory to me
Maybe, like Eve they were clearly built to “seem feminine” but no one bothered to program as such, and as their sentience develops they end up being a man. Like “Just because you meant for me to be a woman doesn’t make me one” type stuff
Doesn't "transgender" mean your gender identity is different that what you were assigned at birth? If that's the case than they wouldn't be trans because they never were assigned genders at birth. They just are nonbinary. Eve is mostly feminine and Wall-E is largely masculine, but neither of those are genders.
@@angeldude101 for the most part I agree with you. I do think, however, that the audience is supposed to perceive wall-e as male and Eve as female and that those can therefore serve as their assigned gender
As a pan person who had a crush on a trans person before he came out, and continuing to have a crush on him after he came out, i read strongly believe Li Shang is pan!
Another one for the gay dads is Bagheera (if I spelled it incorrectly please tell me the correct spelling) and Baloo from the Jungle Book, despite Baloo appearing halfway through the film. And as much as we appreciate the vast amount of hetero couples that Disney has provided us for almost 100 years, I feel like they could have done more experimenting with other types of couples. And as fans it's much easier to pair up characters who have more chemistry together as opposed to pairing them with love interests who are mostly there to push for a main heterosexual couple. I'm not saying hetero couples are bad, because otherwise there wouldn't be generations of humans, but I am saying that there was certainly more potential to have more homosexual couples or characters who love members of different identities equally. And unfortunately Disney squandered most of the few chances that they had to do so (characters in the background don't really count as representation because they mostly only get a few short seconds of screentime. I am looking at you, Star Wars sequels.)
Peter Pan being a gay dad to his found family of sons who all equally reject societal norms thrust upon them gives me so many queer and gender / masculinity feels I cannot BELIEVE I never thought of it before.
you have no idea how happy it made me that you actually talked about my favorite Disney Villain ever: Ratigan. way too many people sleep on him and his and Basil's bitter ex vibes
Alright but hear me out, it's about Elsa. There's a short scene where Elsa holds hands with Honeymaren at the end of the movie. It had to be gay because that scene was deleted in some countries. I know because I went to the cinema in Poland knowing there should be this scene. BUT IT WASN'T. So yes, they're afraid it's gay because it is gay. I said it.
I would like to add some super recent characters that deserve to be here: almost all the family from Encanto lmao. But specifically: Isabela has a very lesbian storyline, Camilo being a shapeshifter, Bruno hiding from his family for years (being the uncle no one talks about = gay), Mirabel feeling like she is not enough and doest fit in, Luisa strong woman go brrr. I am Colombian so this is canon now /hj
Your analyses are always so delightful because 1) They invite me to look at the characters from another perspective, and 2) Seeing my favourite characters from this perspective helps me understand things about myself. It is a double win situation. :)
Loved this video! Maybe it's because the video was only uploaded in the last hour or two but it would be great if there were captions/subtitles available. I always wonder if watching Mulan when I was younger really awakened my non binary self because I adored and was fascinated with the idea of dressing as a man, and also dressing as a woman, and just playing around with gender. I even wrote a short story as a kid about a character that has to pretend to be a boy so she can get ahead in life lol.
i’m less than a quarter through and keep exclaiming “yessss” because you’re so right. as for mike and sully… you say there’s not much textual evidence but in monsters at work he treats sully EXACTLY the same as his girlfriend. i can’t remember what nickname she uses for him but sully uses the same just… cos he wants to, i guess, it’s not played as a joke. also there’s one ep where they take a human baby to a monster-football match and it’s a date. like it’s just a date.
Wait, really? I must watch that show assap! I guess I always headcanoned Sully as gay and Mike co-parents with him cause they're best friends, but polyamory is a great take too!
@@gabo352 it’s a great show! I want to see them continue it but to be honest, I haven’t seen a lot of people talking about it and the quality of the show is like… movie level animation and character design so.. idk if we’ll get more but it’s a good story and a good time :)
I can't believe there's no mention of Warren Peace from Sky High, the character that started off as the scary antagonist and inexplicably becomes the Gay Best Friend halfway through the movie
Completely agree with all of these! But the one I never see is mention of Moana. She literally sings about being in love with another female character. Her parents don't approve of that love. And she struggles between playing her part in society and just being herself and doing what she needs to do. The entire movie is about her accepting this love inside her and it literally ends with her kissing a goddess to save everyone and then still loving this other woman while also proving she can still do her role in society.
Stevie and Alex from Wizards of Waverley place! Not only is Stevie played by Hayley Kiyoko, she also has so much chemistry with Alex. Not to mention how she’s a villain who’s trying to make Alex commit to her cause (which she should have, because she was right)
I love the Remy one because of his dynamic with his father, like how did that go???? "Hey dad, I'm trans male now I hope you can still love me for who I am" "Oh! Of course son, I'll always love yo-" "Also I want to be a cook because I'm tired of eating garbage" "Excuse me, what the f-"
So I can't be the only one who reads luca as a trans narrative, right? obviously there's the general closet style narrative, but I think the elements of finding a place to be who you want to be, so long as you hide a certain part of your past/identity, very strongly resembles the experience of stealth trans people.
it's quite similar to how I see Harold from Shrek 2! The way he was helped to become a human male and have a child. Then, Fairy Godmother is blackmailing him, threatening to reveal his secret to everybody including his spouse, daughter and pretty much all the kingdom. However, when his status is revealed, he is accepted and his wife is still willing to spend her life with him (sorry, don't know how to explain the detransitioning thing, maybe some medical difficulties?).
Remy being a trans man is literally the most perfect headcanon i've ever heard. This movie means alot to me so I am forever going to cling to this and never let go.
I remember being, like, ten, and seeing Kelsi High School Musical show up to auditions dressed in a full tux. I didn't even know I was queer yet, but I knew she *got me.*
Concerning your evidence for Ratigan, I see it all very justified! The Great Mouse Detective is one of my all time favorites, and I appreciated the Sherlock/Moriarty dynamic, but your explanation, and knowing Ratigan was voiced by none other than the delightful Vincent Price, it's my headcanon now! The way Basil goes into talking about how evil Ratigan is near the beginning, you'd think he's exaggerating the break-up!
I will be angry that SwanQueen wasn't canon until the day I die. ABC is owned by Disney. The show is completely comprised of Disney characters. Regina and Emma absolutely are a couple.
extremely off topic but YOUR HAIR COLOR IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! i have been chasing that color for years and i’ve nearly figured it out, absolutely stunning
Mal and Evie had so much chemistry in that song! If their relationship had been canon, I probably would have been a huge fan of those movies. Let’s face it, Ben is blandest prince since Prince Eric.
You should've included Encanto in this list. That movie had several fruity family members, like *SPOILERS FOR ENCANTO* Isabela. She's the traditionally feminine sister of the main character who's betrothed to a man, but later on, we learn that she actually wasn't interested in marrying him, and was only doing so for the family. I was getting some strong lesbian vibes from that one. Also, the movie ends with Isabela looking like the gay pride flag. You know what, you should do a separate video for Encanto in the same vein as your Luca video.
Isabela not wanting to marry a man is a choice she made in terms of her as a person and has nothing to do with sexuality. The rainbow colors in the end illustrate how she is free from being an object from her family and can finally let her true colors bloom off and on.
i think this might be the most genuinely fun video i've seen in a long time, i'm definitely gonna come back to it if i ever need a little pick-me-up in my day
Ok so "Because I'm queer and I said so" just needs to be on a t shirt so I can buy it right this minute x) I basically agree with all of the character chosen here. I was especially upset that Raya wasn't queer.
Peter Pan also has very intense trans vibes because many of us used to fear growing up due to the changes in our bodies. It can feel like the death of your sense of self
You may already know this, but there's a trans Peter Pan novel called Peter Darling by Austin Chant. I haven't read it but I've heard very good things!
@@Tesseract_King dammit I was so excited about this but then I saw it has heavy focus on peter and hook like... together. Which ok yah the whole point is that he's an adult now but I'm not gonna be able to get past that the dynamic i immediately think of is that between an adult and a child

Merida needs to interact with ANY women she's not related to before I make any judgements.
Fr
She had an interesting season on Once Upon A Time. Another wasted opportunity.
But- and hear me out- aro Ace arrow Ace. For the puns ALONE I hope she truly is
Li Shang's actor, BD Wong (who is gay IRL) has said he considers Li to be sexually fluid, being very supportive of the idea of fluidity and fluidity readings of sexuality and gender in general. Obviously he's just the actor and this is far from the first time a Disney actor was more progressive then the company, but according to Jurassic Park, BD Wong can clone dinosaurs so honestly I'm more then willing to take his word on this!
The fact that Li clearly was starting to fall for Mulan before he found out she was a woman made it pretty obvious he was at least bi. Imo.
Stuck On Mute ikr. When I was a kid I literally thought the only reason he was angry at Mulan was because of his internalized homophobia.
Awwwwww kittens! Yay, I'm so glad you have new kittens!
He disapproves of heterosexuality
Asexual Rat!!! (But no really you are correct)
As an ace trans man I say why not both
Trans and ace are not mutually exclusive, (nor are ace and gay, ace and bi, or other such permutations since romantic orientation, gender, and sexuality are three separate things, not to mention the ace spectrum itself)
both is good *nods*
Yes I agree the cat lady from treasure planet turned me gay. Fun fact though, apparently in a line that got cut from the final script it mentioned that the kids that she has with the doctor at the end were actually given birth to by him

okay but you can’t forget the best of those disney best friends who are definitely gay, riley and maya from girl meets world. like there was a whole recurring joke that was just people saying “they love each other! they’re gonna marry each other!” like they both are supposed to have a crush on the same guy, but literally whenever possible they say that they would choose each other over the guy in a heartbeat. it’s literally a plot point that maya only started liking the guy because she loves riley and wants to make sure he’s good enough for her, like come on. they gave each other rings. they have pet names for each other. you cannot tell me they’re not girlfriends
another thing they copied off boy meets world lol

@@iexistsomehow5718 Eric and Matthew. There's a youtube video about them acting gay for however many minutes straight and wowie. 👀
I mean
They kinda had an Abed/Troy relationship in the sense of a lot of recurring jokes implying they're a couple.
YES
You may recall that in the scene where Kuzco is in drag, he and Pacha are posing as newlyweds. The waitress tells them, "Congratulations on coming out in public." Which can be interpreted many ways. In the Icelandic dub, however, she says, "Congratulations on coming out of the closet." I mean...
wait, really?
Yes
Why didnt rowan bring up the show though? In it kuzco likes maleena.
WTF
the reason is because joking about gayness used to be a non touchy subject and men and women were aloud to dress in whatever without being labeled as gay.
Shang is a 100% bi not even an argument
LITERALLY canon (even if not explicitly stated)
As Xiran Jay Zhao always declares, "BISEXUAL LEGEND LI SHANG!!"
on another chanel i literaly sore a whole debate over this, which lasted for 5-6 months
I disagree. Shang was just proud that ping became a great soldier, nothing more.
Riley from Inside out was non binary. In the mums head, it was only (coded) women as the emotions, and in the dads head is was only (coded) men. In Rileys head, their emotions were of varying genders.
(Side note: I actually dont know if this is disney or not, but I have very strong feelings about it)
OMG I’ve never caught that. You’re right!
Yea thought of that too but sadly you are wrong
Riley is TOTALLY nonbinary. I know the suits claim it's, like, just because she's young or whatever -- but all the other young people we see have monogendered emotions as well. She's one of ours. 💛🤍💜🖤
I’ve always found it weird how when u see in every other head they have their emotions the same as their own gender besides Riley. I thought it was just some continuity error but I’m fully excepting this as my head canon now,
Um no its actually part of her development she is developing her own style as she grows
I'm a lesbian & Elsa doesn't *feel* super lesbian to me, I think she reads more as aro/ace. She's the "ice queen" after all, I can't imagine her longing for a romance.
Omg same
Same. Although since I'm aroace it's hard for me to imagine anyone longing for a relationship lol
I’m demisexual and I think Elsa is definitely on the asexual spectrum.
I personally think Elsa is Ace, and I also feel like giving her a romantic relationship would undercut the whole message of true love not having to be romantic love…would I accept Anna as being Bi though….absolutely
I do stan both, but as someone who’s ace her being aro/ace would be super cool
Specifically Treasure Planet Jim Hawkins is one of the most transmasc characters i have ever seen. I present the lyrics of Im Still Here:

Also Timon and Pumbaa spend the whole episode freaking out that their babies are missing.
May I present to the jury the case of Evelyn Deavor from Incredibles 2?
I mean, even if you haven't seen the movie (most of which she spends FULLY hitting on Elastigirl and sitting in chairs incorrectly), literally google a single picture and tell me that's not a raging homosexual.

I instead see the strength of friendship in a lot of these cases or enjoy the allowance of expression of a confidently Cis-gendered, straight person outside of society's norms. Then hearing queer people online talk about their takes I'm like, "I don't see it, but also do." Mulan and yentl are especially strong examples for me
The Hannah Montana bit got me and made me imagine that in the canonical world of Hannah Montana there’s probably people who analyzed her songs like the other side of me and decided she was gay and had to hide it, only to be crushed by her going on a talk show to “come out” as brunette.

what does aroace lesbian mean? i thought aroace meant that a person mostly doesn’t experience attraction/ seek out romantic or sexual relationships /gen

² you're on to something
@@GuiSmith I hate to be that person, but like... Do you mind dropping the link, good person? 👀
KENNY ORTEGA DIRECTED DESCENDANTS?!?!????!?!!!?!!
Other Disney gays that deserved to be gay: Eric Matthews and Jack Hunter from Boy Meets World
Also I’m crying over your kittens. They are beautiful and perfect 😭❤️
the way i fell for them after watching long-ass compilations…thank you Eric and Jack fans…someday I will watch BMW in its entirety
100%
YESS
YES.
everyone in that show is the gay agenda lmaoo
I fancied Captain Amelia as a kid and now I'm a lesbian, so I can confirm. Also, speaking of queer pirates: shout out to my favorite gender-fluid/NB pirate King Lizzie Swann - from "proper governor's daughter" and "lady" to cabin boy to a literal pirate king (not queen, *king*)
on the other hand it's quite respectable and cool for a woman to fill traditionally male coded social roles and still remain firmly a woman, that's rad also and I do like to see it. one doesn't have to be nb to be nonconfirming
@@shoepixie yes, but as a nb I also like that interpretation personally.
Elizabeth and Will are both a singular husband in their relationship.
Another curious detail: Ratigan was voiced by Vincent Price, a great actor known for his villainous roles. According to his daughter, he had relationships with men as well as women and was probably bisexual.

Isn't the last one actually the tomboy from Disney's Great Break or whatever that series is called in English. The one where the intro starts with a ringing school bell
@@REDFRLegend Yes 💀
I have decided that all fictional characters should be part of the Queer community unless the story specifically requires them to be cis het.
Wait, you mean they're not?
Like actually once a character is written well? Bi. Doesn't even require any story changes so no one can prove it wrong
I actually think unless specifically stated we shouldn’t care or but labels on characters sexualities. For me one of the good reasons to watch a show is to learn about characters and people who are different than me.
WORD
@@evelynn303 That would be very interesting. I'd like to see that
Ok so in Seeing Red, I know they confirm that one of Mei's friends is a lesbian, and I think they confirm that another one is bi (or just like a huge ally), but Tyler also gives off huge gay best friend vibes. Also, just look at how excited he gets for that boy band. Really wish they would have had him awkwardly bump into another boy at the concert, and have that shy "we see eachother" moment, because that is a totally relatable queer experience.
The giles pfp 😩🤌 Also this claim on Tyler being the gay friend 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 so true. I love that someone else also felt that.
Yeah
Also Mulan is a non-binary person like I rember listening to reflection made me cry when I was young.
This was great! Well done :)
I agree! I think Elsa is asexual homoromantic and Merida is a flat out asexual.
If you search, "who's elsa's girlfriend" Honeymaren shows up !!
They both are nonbinary, imo. Since robots don't need a gender. They seems to connect like Demisexuals.
I feel Z-O-M-B-I-E-S is definitely worth a mention. There is no way any of the main characters are straight.
That is one of the gayest movies I've ever watched I swear
Addison’s cousin was definitely not straight
@@negressprincess addison gives me closeted pan vibes
@@negressprincess I will cry uf he is.
BUT ASPEN THOUGH! THEY'RE THE COOLEST!
As a pan person who had a crush on a trans person before he came out, and continuing to have a crush on him after he came out, i read strongly believe Li Shang is pan!
Okay, Basil and Rattigan makes a ton of sense. I need to watch that film again, honestly, it’s been too long.
@Rebecca Woolf oh yeah totally, but them being exes fits perfectly
Basil looks exactly what the words “bisexual man” sounds like
Alright but hear me out, it's about Elsa.
I said it.
I ship it
Shout out to my favourite gay Disney dads who didn’t make the list: Baloo and Bagheera
Me and my friend are convinced the three of them are in a poly relationship, simply because of the show and how they all treat each other! :)
Both of you, thank you I completely agree. Sully and Celia both use the same pet names interchangeably and the three of them are always together.
Also the song Sully and Mike sing at the credits is EXTREMELY non-hetero
Yes, Rowan! Please do separate videos for both MCU and Star Wars. Can't wait hearing you roast both franchises 😂
What?
Am I stupid? Did I miss ALL of this context?
I think the ocean is a metaphor for freedom in general, not being gay in particular.
??????
Wait are you saying the sea is supposed to be a woman or something?
Stevie and Alex from Wizards of Waverley place! Not only is Stevie played by Hayley Kiyoko, she also has so much chemistry with Alex. Not to mention how she’s a villain who’s trying to make Alex commit to her cause (which she should have, because she was right)
so like bffs
I shipped them so much
I love the Remy one because of his dynamic with his father, like how did that go????
"Hey dad, I'm trans male now I hope you can still love me for who I am"
"Oh! Of course son, I'll always love yo-"
"Also I want to be a cook because I'm tired of eating garbage"
"Excuse me, what the f-"
Personally, I also headcanon Rapunzel as pan. Like,, in the series she has some heavy sapphic vibes.
Also the fact that her weapon of choice is literally a frying pan.
I'm surprised you didn't include Baloo and Bagheera in your gay dads section. I mean Baloo is literally a bear, the joke writes itself!
Lindsay Ellis would like a word about Ratigan being under appreciated
Can confirm, as a kid Spinelli was my favorite, and today I am trans bisexual tomboy with exactly the fashion sense all that implies
23:35 This is Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz erasure. We stan an unproblematic bisexual trans king
I’m sure Walt is turning over in his grave seeing what has become of his company.
Well he was a nazi sympathiser so
I remember being, like, ten, and seeing Kelsi High School Musical show up to auditions dressed in a full tux.
YOUR HAIR IS SO NICE WTH NICE JOB!!!!
I’m still trying to figure out what I feel comfortable and uncomfortable with rn.
Remmy: hey dad, I'm a boy.
Dad: okay, son.
Remmy: I want to be a chef.
Dad: THAT is where I draw the line!!!
I'm digging the new hair colour. It looks gorgeous! You can pull off all shades of blue.
Your hair reminds me of Sonic the hedgehog and I'm saying this in the nicest, love filled, "I wish I looked this cool" kind of way
extremely off topic but YOUR HAIR COLOR IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! i have been chasing that color for years and i’ve nearly figured it out, absolutely stunning
I also could be described as “a cesspool of homosexual potential”
Yes, there’s a lot you could explore there.
i think this might be the most genuinely fun video i've seen in a long time, i'm definitely gonna come back to it if i ever need a little pick-me-up in my day
as a child i really thought maddie and london were love interests and only realised years later that they weren't.. 💀
Ok so "Because I'm queer and I said so" just needs to be on a t shirt so I can buy it right this minute x)
I basically agree with all of the character chosen here.

@@Tesseract_King no worries! people don't seem bothered by it and I can't imagine why. For me it's just a big yikes, which SUCKS because the idea of Peter actually just being trans Wendy is brilliant! Even the title is perfect

funny how the title says 'should've been' when for me they ARE
