I heard my Mother and Grand Mother talk about the grade raising. They said it was horrible while it was going on. Stink,, mud and mosquitoes were definitely bad. With the 1915 storm, my Grand Father paid the last note on their home and that night, it was blown away due the Hurricane. They had to start all over once again.

@@candisbrendel7396 Maybe it depends on the voting in the city, and what the people want. I'm not aware of any flooding other than Miami of course it's not an island.

I thought it was 17 feet. Also it was over 12000 deaths estimated, and not one penny of federal money went into the entire project.

over 12,000 estimated deaths total from the storm. Only 6,000 of them were on Galveston. The storm didn't hit the island and then disappear. A category 4 is a seriously huge and powerful storm system. It hit the mainland as well, in the dead of the night, and without warning. Being born in Texas City and living in Galveston county basically my entire 51 years, that thought is terrifying. I lived in Galveston when Ike hit. It made landfall about two blocks from my front door. I'm still in Galveston county, but the morning of the day Ike hit was the last day I lived on the island. It now takes about ten minutes from my driveway to the island side of the causeway.

The reason only 8 lives were lost in 1915 because people left Galveston. They still had fresh memories of the 1900 storm.
