- Hi everyone,
Welcome back to the channel.
In this video we will be carrying out a complete replacement of the rear discs, pads and wear sensor on the BMW 1 series. This process is identical for all of the one series models with the only real difference across the range being the size of the disc. The process however is largely the same.
I hope that you find the video informative. If you enjoyed it then please don't forget to like, subscribe and comment for more videos from Kev's Shed.

Very clear explanation helped me out with the job took a fair few hits with the hammer but got them old discs off great stuff thanks for passing on your knowledge.
ninja2353 no problem, glad it was able to help you out! 👌🏻
Did these myself in the driveway. Thanks for the video it’s nice to have something to follow
Georfe Meyer you’re welcome 👍🏻
Thanks so much for the video. Will be trying it soon. A friend of mine told me that the rears were a nightmare as you have to mess around with the handbrake shoe? If so it’s above my pay grade 😂 thanks again.
I also made an easy to follow video on handbrake adjustment, be sure to check that out too! 👍🏻
Another handy tip. There’s a cylinder under the handbrake gaiter that pushes in to release the handbrake fully.
I guess you haven’t seen my video on handbrake adjustment then? 😁
Hi and chance there's a video in changing the shoes thanks
On brake disc that are rusted on its
easyer to hit between were the studs go when taking the disc off.
Possibly, but I would advise that you do that on a car that actually has studs as hitting one of the studs with a hammer is going to damage it!
I tried to take the discs off and I ended up rounding the nut that holds the disc. How do I get the disc off now?
This has happened to me in the past, If it is a disc that you are going to discard then use an angle grinder to remove the head of the bolt. Then you can remove the disc and the stud left behind will usually be easily removed with a decent set of grips.
What’s the torque specifications for the model one front and rear brakes?
Really helpfull and interesting video. Can I ask, is there a reason as to why no copper grease or similar wasn't used?
Because it’s not required and for some reason it seems that everyone thinks it is! It’s not specified in any factory manual that I own and I don’t expect it to ever be!
@@KevsShed fair point I just wondered. Cheers
What are the tools you used to remove the bolts on the brake calipers and the brake disk. Thank you
If I recall correctly, the two calliper bolts are removed with a 16mm spanner and the retaining bolt on the brake disc is removed with a 7mm hex socket or Allen key 👍🏻
Hi Kev, thanks very much for doing this video. You mention telling the car computer the service has been done. Is this done through the dash display or via a tool. If via tool, can you share what tool you use?

fantastic this will help a lot,
Justin Todd 👍🏻
Are the calipers in this video made by TWR ?
How can I find out the torque wrench settings for the callipers on my series 1 E88 2012 good video keep it up very helpful 👍
Be sure to use medium strength threadlocker after cleaning the bolts, that way they will stay on, even if you cant find the right torque values and just snug them up, dont put greace on the bolts, thats what I did on my 1 series.
Sorry buddy, only just seen this comment, I’ll have a look in my manual tomorrow morning and get back to you 👌🏻
What key did you use to get the caliper pins out ? I got one but don’t fit
If I remember correctly it is a 7mm hex chap 👌🏻
@@KevsShed yer thanks mate just my luck Iv not got one lol And the one I got from eBay was the wrong size Did try doing the 16mm bolts but won’t move too
So going to wait for the right key and get a hammer drill too
@@garydeandeery 👌🏻😎
Is adjusting the handbrake a must ?
It is if you need to pass an MOT.
Top job thanks guys 👍
Sorry meant are they TRW Calipers 👍
Very possibly, TRW make a lot of calipers for many of the BMW range
@@KevsShed I've got them on my 1 series and yours looked very similar, I didn't realise you remove the carrier first, I'd been a trying to loosen the 13 mm caliper bolts, with no success lol..but now I know 😂 thank you very much appreciated 👍
Sorry I went to do this today and found it hard to get to the back bolts? I have a 1 series 5 door it looks relatively the same ? Except it's a solid disc not vented.
Can I ask what you used to get the bolts out? A 16mm 6 sided Hex fits
Do you use a 16mm 3/8 drive hex socket with a universal joint and a 3/8 ratchet ?
Just dont know what tools I need to get to the bolts
Wanna do these for myself obviously safely but have a go. Can you list the tools you used please I'd be a massive help ?
One is really easy but the other is part covered by the end of the arm, I used a UJ to get to that one. The job is the same even if the discs are solid 👌🏻
I've got 1/4 ratchet and tourque wrench and a 1/2 drive tourque wrench
Did you use a 3/8 drive Rachet to get them out easier ?
J D I used a 1/4” set
@@KevsShed that's a 3/8 ratchet on your video. Surely not a 1/4 that's tiny you'll never get any torque through that.
@@robmount1179 Yeah, you are of course right! No idea why I said 1/4"
What torque spec where the caliper bolts tightened too? any threadlocker used?
the torq is 16..... hi just YOLO, bad brake change bad job, a lot of mistakes made
Very good but I would of copper greased the back of the pads
A lot of people would but it’s a daft practice that has absolutely no benefit at all!
Most pads now come with a material backing plate which mitigates the need for it on the bad of the pads. However it’s good practice to apply anti seize on any contact points to prevent them seizing in. If the hub has been copper slipped the disc would have been much easier to remove.
Simplified nice one mate
Cheers budfy
Done the back brakes earlier really straight forward never done brakes before took me 90 mins, left piston on the Caliper was really stiff got it tho.
Il be using your threads again in future making covid 19 bareable haha
Glad to hear it mate! Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment 👌🏻
Hi Kev - Have you managed to produce the video on adjusting the handbrake yet? Very helpful video! Need to replace pads and disks but don't want to start until I know I can do it all myself
I certainly have, take a look through my videos and you’ll find it! 👌🏻
Here ya go!

@@KevsShed Perfect thanks! Any chance you've changed any window regulators too? That's my next challenge!
Adjustable water pump pliers ...not Stilsons . Good vid tho.
So they are! All these years that I’ve been referring to them as stilsons! Every day is a school day! Thanks for watching! 👌🏻
Lubrification on the 2 guides??? Nothing...anti seize cooper paste?? VERY IMPORTANT!!
If you say so 🙄
Give this a watch! ruclips.net/video/UzJeToiY4Ik/видео.html
@@KevsShed what hapens when the 2 guides doest slide??? It worns only one of the pads.. becoming irregular...
@@KevsShed
Cooper paste for everyone!!! Only inside the guides!!!!
Fernando Ramalho never happened to me!
Hi ive replaced a couple weeks ago rear break pads . Ive noticed the clip came out and its smelling like burned pad.... Can i just put the new clip back on ? Or i need to bring evertjing apart
Hey buddy, thanks for watching. I am unsure what clip it is that you mean do you mean the anti rattle clip that fits on the outside of the caliper? If so then you will probably be fine with just fitting a replacement. I hope this helps 👍🏻
1 big no no he never used copper grease on back of pads so breaks will squeak like he'll after a few miles
They don't! It literally tells you in the BMW TIS not to do this! 🙈
No brake grease on the runners where pads sit or piston or front of caliper carriers to stop pads rusting or sticking when braking?
Correct because it’s not bloody needed! 🤦🏻♂️
@@KevsShed search online for “BMW new tis” This is the manual used by bmw dealers. It will tell you the correct procedures for everything.
@@seanpaul3050 newTIS got shut down a few months ago by legal threats from BMW.
@@spankeyfish yes you are correct. I have it on disc. You can buy the discs on eBay for a few pounds
