- Hello guys and welcome to mattsbeamer. This video is a quick video on changing the front discs and pads on a BMW F20 F21 1 series.
I recommend that you use NEWTIS to check the Torque setting to your specific car.

Whilst Ive changed pads and discs many times. It's always nice to watch a how-to video just prior to commencing, just to familiarise yourself. Well done
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I hope the job goes nice and smooth for you. Take care :)
Another fantastic video, lots of clear shots, descriptive and well explained, perfect for the 1 Series enthusiast.
Planetauto thank you for your continuous support :) I really need to make other content to gain other car enthusiasts too :)
Wow, thanks for going through the effort of making this diy video :)
My pleasure!
Excellent content and guide. Thank you.
Thank you Kiran!! I appreciate it.
Great discription and you are the first to actually replace the bolts 👍🏽. That's the right way to do it. Most people just reuse the old ones which is wrong.
Amazing amount of content in this vidio ,so well made with attention to detail. You must put so much time into these vidio's , thankyou for taking the time to share your knowledge 👍 have a great day ,pleasure to watch
linda pet thank you linda. I hope you get to follow the video one day :) have a great day
Excellent video! I've got this to do on my f21 soon, got new backing plates to fit as well, they were picked up as an advisory on its mot last month
Good luck! I hope it all goes smooth for you :D
Heyyy.. another great vid Matt!! Well done m8!
Hey, thanks once again :D
Thank you for very detailed video.
Thank you for your kind comment :) have a good week :)
Hi and thx for your videos! very helpful, F.Y.I the site in the description is closed due the BMW gradience to use their official $$$ cost web site
Hello, Thank you for letting me know :) Have a great week.
Can the discs be removed without removing the carrier? Pretty sure on other cars there's just enough room between the disc face and the carrier to angle it out?
Hi, to be honest, I am not sure, I know on my older BMWs you could, but on this car, I stick to doing it the long way round. Sorry I wasn't able to answer your question :)
I now have the answer, you can angle the disc out on the front without moving the carrier out of the way (saves buying new bolts to). On the Rears you can just losen one and remove the other and discs can be removed 👍
@@mrl3170 thank you for letting us know. Cheers 🍻
my discs are solid ones, can i use the vented discs?
Loosen the disc removing bolts while the brakes are in place. That way if they are tight someone can put their foot on the brake pedal if tight. Reuse the caliper carrier bolts if necessary but only after after putting locktite locking compound on.
Great video and so clearly detailed. Thank you so much for sharing. A+++ 😃
Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it :) thanks :D
Thanks for all videos, its really helpful,
Thank you so much for the message :)
Would you say this is a hard job for a beginner?
Hi, should I always change discs when I need new break pads?
Hey, not every time. But you do need to change the pads when you change the discs.
Good & well detailed video bro👍
Is the size of the break pads of this f20 also fits with the f20 of 2019?
Need to buy pads and sensor tomorrow. Hopefully the 18 plate 120d is the same as this cause I’m giving it a bash.👍
Good luck!
Thank you very much for the video !
Unfortunately the link to the paste diagram is not working anymore... Could you upload the diagram again please ?
Hey, I think where you come prom blocked the site :( If you have a VPN, try and open the link saying you are in Russia :)
@@mattsbeamer One more question please :)
For the rear disks, do I need to adjust the parking brake shoes or just plug the new discs ? Thanks
@@macfosch you need to adjust the rear handbrake shoes. I think George Austers made a video on adjusting the rear parking shoes on his old 1 series. They are all very similar
Thanks for a great video. Just a heads-up - NEWTIS has now been BLOCKED by BMW and you have to go to BMWTIS and pay thru the nose. Or got o Ebay and take your chances with the PDF downloads for F20 etc.
Thanks for the info! Where are you from? :)
Hi great video, but was wondering if you could help me out? I just took my F21 for a MOT at the BMW dealership and they found four missing nipple bleed dust caps on the ends of the metal screws on the brakes calipers. In turn they said that both of my brake wear sensors have come loose and snapped as they rubbed against the wheels. They told me I need to get the plastic dust caps because the brake wear sensors are supposed to clip onto this dust cap. But when I see your video that doesn't seem to be the case? Mines a F21 116i 2013 model.
Thank you
Hey, do they mean that the wire for the sensor has snapped or worn through.
@@mattsbeamer Hi there, thanks for the quick reply. Yes both wires have snapped, I still have 11mm front and 8mm rear remaining on the pads. They told me they came loose as the bleed nipple dust caps (all 4 are missing oddly) which according to them are supposed to allow part of the wire to clip onto. I'm trying to source some dust caps off eBay as the dealership could not source the caps without ordering the calliper part too which they said would cost me £220.
@@Hero87 for some reason I didn’t capture it on film on this video. But on my rear disc video I can see that it’s held into place with the cap. I’ll try and see if I can search for the bleep nipple covers too. Strange they are missing.
@@mattsbeamer Thanks just seen it in your rear pad sensor video. Also thanks for trying to find the caps too. The dealership also did my brake fluid service last year, but doubt that involves removing the dust caps on the callipers. If so then maybe they didn't put them on tight enough very odd anyway but never mind.
I had a quick look on realoem, and it seems that the dealership didn't know how to use their computer.
I think they need to look for this part 34116852852 (Repair kit ventilation valve) the thing is it comes with the little valve too (not the whole calliper thou)

Can the old bolts be reused?
Hi everyone, I have the next question
Does f22 m235i 2015 blue calipers and discs rotors fit on f21 120i 2017? Actually I have base caliper of 1 pot
What size are the bolts that hold the carrier in place please
Hello :) the part number, I believe are 34106864424. When I type the part number in, it comes up with M12x1.5x43mm ZNS3. Best to double check though :)
@@mattsbeamer ok cool but what size socket did you use to take them out
Great video as always. Just one question :how do you know it's time to change the disks? I've heard once every two break pads. Thanks
BTW , newtis closed since 10/10/20 following the demand of BMW.
Good question! I answered it in my latest Q&A. Cheers mate :D
Awesome video. Thanks a lot :)
You are welcome! cheers!! :D
What size is the disks, front also rear?
Or the part number
Hey, the site I use for the part numbers is called real oem. You will have to enter the last 7 digits of the VIN to make it more accurate. It also depends on the type of brakes you have. Are yours the standard brakes like mine :)
@@mattsbeamer Hi matt, mine are standard like your.. do you know what size they are?
Hi Matt, just out of interest do you know if the front central jacking point is the same on a 2014 f30 3 series sport?
Yes, I believe it is. I left you a diagram link in my latest Q&A :)
Thank you very much Mattsbeamer 👏👏👏👍👍
You are very welcome
Can anyone get newtis to work anymore?
Hey, it works for me and I am in russia. What happens if you click the link above and where are you?
Hi Matt. I am in the UK and this is now what the site says: Site Closed
This site is closed per demands of BMW AG.
BMW recommends the official and up-to-date BMW TIS which can be accessed at www.bmwtis.com*.
* However, we believe that BMW violates the right to repair by effectively locking out individual consumers from basic repair information through unreasonably high access fees.

@@mattsbeamer Are you saying it still works in Russia? Here in Spain it has been closed per demand BMW.
How many mm are the front disk? 284mm?
Hey, I hope this helps ruclips.net/video/Er5bM4aMTsI/видео.html
Wow very nice video:) thanks ^^
Thank you! Cheers!
Haynes/BMW and yourself tell me 110nm
Been inspired by The Rubbish Mechanic channel, sir?
Has he done a f20? ) he is inspirational with the cars he fixes
@@mattsbeamer , not yet, sir! However, he does film a lot of this type of video...
Anyone who needs to be told to not take the wheel nuts off with the car on the ground really, really should not be changing brake discs and pads.
Nice vid ,mate. Please wear gloves next time, otherwise it is super hard to clean your hands 😅
Hey, Thanks so much for the advise. I was wearing them, then they split, and I forgot to put new ones back on. When I get some I usually get some washing up liquid and tip sugar into it, and that cleans my hands up nicely :)
