Every program has terrible dry spells. Ohio State went 32 years without a title. Michigan just won their first outright title since 1948. Everyone hates on ND for not winning a title. Despite regularly playing national title contenders year in and year out in the 80’s and 90’s. In 1990 alone they played (AP final rankings) #3 Miami (W), #7 Michigan (W), #8 Tennessee (W), #11 Penn State (L), #16 Michigan St. (W), #20 USC (W), and then lost by one point to #1 Colorado in the Orange Bowl. Yes, their scheduling is less impressive now but so are most teams not in the SEC. Ohio St will have three ranked opponents on their 2024 regular season schedule, ND will have four.
ND also lost to Northern Illinois. Ohio State actually plays a legit schedule because it plays in a conference. ND can pick its own schedule every year and in recent years it has not been great. This year in particular is atrocious.
They play a partial ACC schedule so 5 games a year are decided by the conference. They have yearly rivalries with USC, Stanford, and Navy. That leaves them 4 games to schedule each year. This year it was supposed to be @Texas A&M, NIU, Miami (OH), and @Miami. Except Miami overbooked their schedule, so they play (currently ranked) Army instead. They routinely play 9 or 10 “Power 4/5” opponents each year, the same as (or more) than any other team. Outside of the top 2 or 3 teams the Big Ten is just as weak as the ACC. Is a game against Nebraska or Northwestern really any different than playing Georgia Tech or Virginia?
The Stanford Cardinal seems to be a huge thorn in the side of Notre Dame. Although Notre Dame usually wins against Stanford in games that don't matter Stanford tends to ruin Notre Dame's chances for a National Title everytime.
How did Brian Kelly suddenly become regarded as a "great" coach the minute he left for LSU? For 12 seasons all we heard was that his ND teams were "trash" and he couldn't win a major bowl game. All of that 35 years of HC experience and he needed to rely on his players' last-minute heroics to edge Toledo. At home.
I will say this, Notre Dame has been so consistent that, if the 12 team playoff started earlier, Notre Dame would have made Round One as one of the lower seeds.
My feelings for ND run more than skin deep. When they invited my grandfather to teach right after WWII, it paved the way for my mother's entire family to emigrate to this country. You don't forget something like that. Our family will be forever grateful to ND for that. I was born in South Bend, am Catholic and I do bleed for the football team. But I also feel they've become just another program. Lou Holtz undid some of the damage done by Gerry Faust, but ever since that last-second loss to Boston College in 1993, the program seemed to have lost its sense of direction. Bob Davie didn't help with his, we-don't-have-the-talent-to-compete-for-a-title excuse; Ty Willingham was a total bust and Charlie Weis was all hype. Brian Kelly never could win the big ones, if you don't count the double overtime win over Clemson in 2020.
