Yeah. I've always seen ennui as something more than boredom but less than depression. That 'blah' feeling we have sometimes where we just don't feel much of anything.
I so love how less controlling Joy is in this one. She went from "Riley needs to be happy" to "Riley needs us." I also how she includes Sadness in everything now and completely trusts her. It's like Woody and Buzz all over again.
I really did love this movie as a young adult who has severe anxiety and the scenes of Riley having her panic attack made me sob! Glad to see you finally reacting to this :)
I like how in the beginning of the movie we actually think anxiety is helping because she actually is helping but when anxiety takes over that's when it becomes unhelpful. The funny thing is that somehow we still believe that worrying and being anxious is helping us somehow so it's very hard to let go of that emotion which you know, can cause the anxiety and panic attacks.
When Riley's sense of self ultimately said, "I'm not good enough," I SOBBED in the back of the theater! In my late 30s battling depression, I can still relate to it. We put so much expectation and pressure to succeed on ourselves and have so much put on us that it becomes overwhelming. I cried for five minutes straight. Still crying now as I post this.
40 years old here and I cried as well. Those feelings often start in puberty but they never really leave. I was at the theater with my young teen and a group of friends, girls and boys. Every one of them walked out of the movie talking about having feelings of low self worth, anxiety attacks, and more. Any movie that can spur on real conversations around mental health, especially among teens, deserves serious accolades.
@@Carolinagirl1028 The thing about is that nobody wants to address these things. So, in worst case scenarios, the feelings sit in these kids and fester. It's one of the reasons I got into youth work and mentoring. I wanted to prevent kids growing up like that.
Being 10 years of fighting depression, I wonder what depressed brain's inside look like. Maybe the console is gray and broke like how it was in inside out 1.
I don’t cry at movies that often. But I sobbed watching Inside Out 2 in the theatre. The part that got me was “maybe that’s what happens when you get older. You feel less joy”. As someone who has struggled with anxiety & depression his whole life, it really got me. I read this theory that Embarrassment is Bing Bong reincarnated because as a teenager, Riley would be embarrassed about having an imaginary friend.
Just a thought, as a former athlete realistically thinking about it. She would make the team easily. She scored 2 goals in the early stages of the game which apparently was something no other player has ever done. That "talent" alone would make most coaches look over the intangible stuff and most coaches believe they can either overlook it or just teach them the intangibles later. "You can't teach talent" they like to say. Especially in highly competitive teams. The more competitive the competition the less the intangibles matter. So I could realistically see the coach taking her based off of raw talent and thinking "oh I'll just tell her to pass a little bit more". But I did wanna say that your videos and reactions are awesome and have been watching for a few years now on and off. Also, glad you enjoyed the movie cause I thought it was great too.
"Oh, my gosh, I'm so sorry! I can get ahead of myself. I'm Anxiety, one of Riley's new emotions, and we are all super jazzed to be here. Where can I put my stuff?"
When the core belief became I'm not good enough... Ooof! I felt that deep in my anxious soul. I also am really glad that they didn't make the tumultuous emotions of puberty be about her getting her period. The emotions and feelings are messy on their own and are universal at that age
Oh the meme with the guy looking back with the girl is actually there during the sequence where they invade Anxiety’s animation sweatshop. 👀 Just gotta do some looking in the background.
I personally like Inside Out 2 better; and can relate to it a lot more than the first. I have Anxiety as my Lock Screen wallpaper and have Sadness as my home screen personally. Love the reacts!
When I saw this movie in the theater I LITERALLY had to use grounding techniques during the panic attack scene to stop MYSELF from being triggered by it and having a panic attack of my own...as someone who has PTSD and multiple anxiety disorders I'm no stranger to panic attacks and that scene...they nailed the depiction of it. It felt THAT real. I like this movie better than the first one because this one is way more relatable and thus the emotional parts hit harder. As much as I love the first one, I've never moved across the country... I've moved twice in my life, but it's always been within the same town, so while I've lived in three houses, I still live in the same town I've lived in my whole life. So I can't relate to Riley as well in the first one, but I really feel EVERYTHING this one throws at you...and I feel it BIG TIME.
Man I watched this movie with my mom and the anxiety attack scene got to her a little. She's seen my anxiety attacks first hand but i think seeing how it feels from the perspective of the one having the attack helped her understand what I go through because its hard to explain how it feels beyond ' my minds going a million miles a minute and it feels like I'm dying.'
Joy: I don't know how to stop Anxiety. Maybe we can't. Maybe this is what happens when you grow up. You feel less joy..." like you that line cut me real deep in the theater... it was so relatable!
that line- growing up means less joy- hit hard. It's a true and terrible line because it fits with how adults always tell kids to enjoy being young and don't grow up too fast. Because once the other emotions come in and more complex events happen in your life joy is still there just not as present as it is when you are a kid. oh and the scene with the protections 16:00 one of the smaller screens you can see that guy checking out another girl-Val in this case, with Riley being the one gasping at the guy.
whenever they all hugged it felt like they were hugging me. & maturing is realizing that anxiety is NOT the villain, Yeah it’s not quite as amazing as the first film as it does lose some of the huge emotional core that first film had (like no scene in this came close to the tear jerker “Take Her To The Moon For Me” scene in the first film) and it did played on familiar ground in terms of plot and structure. But where it lacks in those departments, it makes up with some creative ideas that expands the series in an organic way, the animation is beautiful, it’s still really funny at times, the new emotions are fun editions (Maya and Eyo are the highlights and everytime they share the scene together it’s just pure gold), and it still had some solid emotional ground behind it to let those feelings (ha) it wanted to achieve hit affectively.
How I love Evan. Always makes my day see his videos pop-up in my subscription feed. I am even MORE HAPPY when it's a horror film. But happy nonetheless.

So pretty much this was happening during a summer camp because this was in the summer so I think what this is he did with something a little bit different but however, I think because of that we are going to get inside out three because we didn’t also notice that they mention that that place is also a high school and at the end of the movie we see her have a walker and everything for herself in that place so maybe the next movie is about her being in high school
Funny how we come back to bottling up the emotions once again. In the first movie. Joy tried to bottle up all the emotions and tried to make Riley to be only happy. and tried to cast out Sadness. But now we have it happening again and now, Joy and the others are all getting shut out by the new emotions. Okay. Who's been talking to Dora the Explorer. We have a talking bag. Yeah. Why didn't they just call Ennui "boredom"? I literally didn't even know what that word was until this movie! Also they're also more sarcastic than just bored! Its kinda the equivalent of a kids show called "Mr. Man" (a show that's just like Inside Out but with multiple emotions), where they had a character named "Mr. Persnickety" but I guess kids didn't know what that word meant because they later changed his named to a more simple name of "Mr. Fussy"!
Inside Out 2 almost comes close to being as masterful as the first, in my opinion. It retains most of what made its predecessor so special and one of the studio's best movies without coming off as a complete rehash. I'd gladly more than welcome a third movie another number of years down the line.
