  • When starting this project, it can be confusing knowing what to do and how to do it.
    In this video you will learn everything you need to know about how to paint your fabric furniture to look like leather.
    #howtopaintfurniture #fabricpainting #upholstery #furnitureflip #furniturerestoration
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here is a list of items you'll need:
    • 1 quart of light brown latex paint (egg shell paint)
    •8 oz of your darker latex paint
    • Small and medium sized paint brush
    • 2 to 3 mixing trays (A paper plate will do)
    • Fabric softener
    • 1/4 size measuring cup
    •Sand Paper/Sanding Block
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    WHAT TO DO?????? 🤷
    💦 Wetting My Fabric:
    Begin my completely wetting the fabric on your furniture, you do not need to "soak" it. just Spritz it until lightly dampened. but you can also spray as needed if any of your sections dry out before you begin painting.
    🎨 Mixing My Paint:
    For the first day you'll only need to mix your light brown paint.
    Measure out 3/4 of a cup of your light brown latex paint and pour into a container.
    Measure out 2/4 of a cup of your fabric softener and pour into the paint.
    Mix mix mix- The paint and fabric softener makes a weird consistency and takes a few minutes to stir.
    Also set a bow of water, you'll dip your brush in to help spread the paint
    🖌️ Applying Paint:
    You'll be paint 3 separate coats of (light brown) paint
    When applying your paint mixture paint
    1. Dip brush in water 2. Dip brush in paint
    3. Begin painting your fabric (Repeat)
    Start from the top of the chair and work your way down so that you can catch any dripping when it occurs.
    If you have a cushion that is not removable, try to hit those hidden spots because they may show when someone goes to sit in the chair.
    (I'm not sure if the chair will stick together in the crevices so trying pulling it apart every thirty minutes to avoid fabric binding together)
    If cushion is removable, paint it separately (off of the chair)
    let chair dry for at least 6 hours before sanding and applying the second coat.
    Sanding:
    You MUST sand between each coat once it dries. You will be sanding a total of 4 coats!
    Mixing My Darker Color:
    Measure out 3/4 of a cup of your dark latex paint.
    Measure out 2/4 of a cup of fabric softener.
    MIX MIX MIX MIX MIX MIX MIX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Last Layer: 🎨
    You'll dip your brush into the light brown paint and find the center of the 1st section and paint a circle. Apply even paint to be able to blend it out.
    Then, on the outer edges of the circle apply your dark brown color and beging blending Ina circle motion. Follow the Looney toons diagram I displayed in the video as a reference to blending out your two colors.
    If you know how to blend out makeup or even a picture, you maybe find this concept pretty easy.
    Try to avoid suddenly dragging your brush from one color to the other.
    The center of the fabric should be lighter than the outer edges of the fabric. gradually move your brush as the color blends.
    Treat your chair as if every section is a square ⬛ and the lighter circle ⭕ goes in the center of that square.
    Be very thorough when you blend these two colors because your mind naturally wants to think that they will even out as they dry but they won't. They will show up exactly the way you paint them!!!!
    When I first started I thought that I could use a dabbing/blotting motion and shortly realize that that would not work it has to be blended.
    Finishing:
    Once your last blended layer is on, let it dry and then you can lightly sand it.
    Your project is complete ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅

    Thank you, for your direct directions on the measurements of the paint, the mixing, the sanding, and blending. It is so helpful and I love the fact that you didn't do alot of side box talking during your video. Thank you again I have started my project.

    What kind of paint is it ?

    Looks fab! Does the latex paint mixture need any treatment on top of it like the chalk paint needs wax?

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад +2

      No wax needed, once it's dry and sanded you can use it! I've been standing on my chair and still no cracking.

    Great !!!! Do you think I could paint a lamp shade like this????

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад +1

      Good question, I always wondered the same, I personally feel like you could however the thicker the paint is, the less likely it is for the light to get through so I'd probably recommend you to add more water than paint to create more of a stain.

    Hi! Great vid, thanks!!
    So I started this process with water&paint mixture and a spray bottle mixture of water&fabric softener (I didn't mix the paint with fabric softener for my first coat.. Can I simply sand and apply the paint&fabric softener mixture for the same result?

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад

      Good question, I have not tried it in that order. I'd recommend you complete the next layer by mixing the paint with the fabric softener to ensure your next layers will be "correct".

    What an amazing transformation! Did you also dip your brush in water when doing the 2nd and 3rd coats?

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад +3

      Great question!
      During the whole project, (if you're painting a fabric) I'd say dip in water every 3rd time. it just helps to spread, blend and soak into the fibers that you may not see.
      In doing so, my chair has held up ever since! No cracking, even after standing on it!!!!!

    Hi it’s so amazing When did you get the paint Can you please send to me the address of paint I need the same color

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад

      I actually went to home Depot and the paint was premade aka "😬 oops paint" so there was no official color.
      I'd recommend you find a nice caramel color and then find a darker caramel color and when you apply them to your furniture they will come together nicely.

    Faux not foax. You didn't wipe the chair after you sanded it to get the sandpaper grit off?

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад

      Thank you so much, I had not even noticed the spelling!
      Honestly, I don't remember if I whipped the dust off but I'd say that it's safe to dust with a dry cloth before starting the next layer.

    Curious, how has the painted chair held up? Has it chipped at all? 🤔

    • @Abbiehousediy
      @Abbiehousediy  Год назад +2

      Believe it or not, It's still holding up, I tend to stand in the chair, more than I sit in it. There are no cracks or chips even after carrying my 150 pounds... I'm surprised myself!
