Her phrases "billion year old carbon" and "we are stardust" are actually derived from relatively new scientific discoveries at that time: Carbon is made in the hearts of stars, and since we're all made of carbon (among other things), we are LITERALLY stardust. It's a great poetic insight.
Boy, ain't she something? This was like one of the first songs she wrote and recorded. We are stardust, million year old carbon, we are golden, caught in the devil's bargain, and we have got to get ourselves back to the garden (of Eden). This Joni became something completely beyond most performers and this first composition was the first thing I can remember her presenting to the world. She has become one of the most special artists as she climbed the ladder of success. I hope you explore more of her work. You will not be disappointed. And thank You.
Welcome to the Party! Joni Mitchell is nothing short of a GODDESS!!! You should listen to two entire albums of hers -- Blue and Court & Spark. She is a GENIUS!!
I feel like this song became an anthem for the hippy generation. Very deep lyrics, and I think a very important moment for society. A very long and masterful catalog.
Her poetic lyrics and spectacular voice is so captivating. I was fortunate to see her and Jackson Browne in 1972, at the Berkeley community Theatre. I was completely mesmerized by her performance.
Joni wrote this for her friends, the group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young who were performing that very first day of the Woodstock Festival. Joni was performing on a TV show in New York and could not make the festival, but this video was filmed as she was contracted on this TV show in New York and her song, the anthem Woodstock, became the theme song for this very first immense gathering of people at the locale in Woodstock New York.
I would suggest her live performance of "California". She plays an Appalachian hammer dulcimer with her fingers. I can't think of any other performer, rock or pop, that mastered that instrument. Her voice as usual is ethereal. The song is from her masterpiece album, "Blue".
Hello there, Pope. I'm glad to see someone of your generation discovering Joni Mitchell's beautiful, soulful music. I grew up during that era, and at 68 now, I sometimes feel sorry that music like that isn't as prevalent now. I watched your reaction to "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Both Sides Now" a few hours ago and to this song just now, and I do hope you keep digging into it, as there's quite a lot of it to go through. Simply put, Joni Mitchell is a giant in her profession, and the spell her singing put on me over 50 years ago is still here, as strong and as welcome as ever. Thanks for your reaction here, & for the one previous, and for as many more as you ever produce. Cheers.
You're in good company, liking Joni. So did Robert Plant who celebrated Joni in Led Zeppelin's "Going to California". Also, Neil Young, Graham Nash (CSNY), and Leonard Cohen (Hallelujah, First We Take Manhattan) have extolled her praises. Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada- home of three of those named here.
Thank you SO much, Pope! I like your style and what you have to say. Thanks for getting music like this out for yet another generation to appreciate and consider. Consider the times when Woodstock happened! July, 1969. I turned 18 yrs old that summer, still trying to figure out just who I was and what I wanted to do with my life. This song, THIS song reminded me, at a time I really needed it, that we are spiritual beings. That the American Dream (so-called) was and is, a scam and leaves too many good humans in the American, soulless hell. All over the world. It reminded me. Reminds me still. Helped ground me. Helps ground me now. Here is our heart and soul. Life in this country will suck the SOUL right out of you. Those were tumultuous times back then. These are tumultuous times right now. We are Spirit, we are ALL One. Seems to me those who are kicking up trouble and hate and division...seems to me they let some kind of vampire suck the Soul right out of them. I know I'm late getting to your channel and this video. I just want to say I hope you keep it up. Keep it going. It was music like Joni's that helped unite us. We stopped the war in 'Nam. We stopped the Draft, and made some real Civil Rights progress. It meant a lot to me to be united with others through music like this. I'm hoping more people of your generation find their own way to unite and keep the Lamp of Soul burning bright. Maybe music like this will help. Liked and Subscribed! ❤🙏
Ahhhhh! Back to a time when artists actually had talent. No auto tune, no tricks, no frills...just pure unadulterated musicianship. You should check out Joni's songs The River and Help Me.
Iconic song about an iconic festival sung and played by an iconic musician. This was a big hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and also for Joni. You should check out more of her songs. Blue is a favorite of a lot of people, as for me I love all of her songs. For Free is a great song as well.
I am pleased another person has discovered the special talent that Joni became. Her guitar work, her piano work and her skill on the dulcimer.....Who would have guessed she almost died in an iron lung having been struck down by polio in her earliest childhood years. And, she became a giant in the entertainment world in the 70's 80's and beyond. Crosby, Stills and Nash were her sidekicks in their musical explorations and they were the ones who made it to Woodstock and were depressed that Joni could not quite get there for the concert for at least 600,000 people at the time. It changed our world, this musical happening and Joni changed our musical world with her talent and voice in the next 40 years. It is no wonder she is now a gazillionaire living in Beverly Hills and on a huge swath of land in Canada and reflecting on her musical path. Thanks for recognizing this special artist.
Welcome "late to the party". This song brought a few tears to my eyes. It was like she said and more. Try "River", "California", and "Case of You". There's many more, its quite a rabbit hole!
She wrote it for her friends who just happened to be one of the biggest bands at the time, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young who recorded it and it was a big hit. Check it out and the Woodstock concert, start with "A Little Help from Friends"
Joni's a legend - a poet, story teller and brilliant composer. Welcome to the Joni rabbit hole. You'd like her 2000 version of Both Sides Now and A Case of You.
Joni's first song to go big was "Clouds" sung by Judy Collins . Judy's manager played a tape of Joni singing it (over the telephone) and Judy knew immediately she had to record this new song .
Welcome to the party! Joni deserves your likes, and is worthy of your love. Been a Mitchell fan since '74, she's got one of the most diverse musical catalogs of any artist to emerge from the 70's singer/ songwriters. I recommend "Peeples Party" & "Raised on Robbery" (guitar), "The Last Time I Saw Richard" and "Blue" (jazz piano). Her lyrical poetry is unsurpassed. ❤
Really appreciated your appreciation of Joni. I've never heard this version of it.... lovely. I've been a fan from the early days... if you haven't yet listened to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - the band she was singing with the night before Woodstock - They were amazing, too.... history. Perhaps listen to their cover of Woodstock. Or Ohio - which was written about the national guard shooting of students at Kent State. A reaction would be nice, but just give them a listen. Joni also toured with Bob Dylan - co-headliner. And she sang at the Last Waltz. Everyone loved Joni back then, and they still do. The upper notes aren't there now, but her voice is expressive in new ways, and her song writing is still superb. (liked/subscribed)
Thank you Joni and Pope! I recommend the (approximately) 10 minute live video of the Joni Mitchell song "Amelia" from the Shadows & Light concert. Joni's lyrics on that song are heartbreaking but beautifully poetic, and Pat Metheny's guitar solo is perfect for that song.
Like you I'm a little late here, all that really matters though is that your soul is touched, as I can see it is. Try listening to Joni from around 1975 onwards especially catching some of her concerts from the 1990s onwards.
Hey, POPE. I see how much you love David Bowie, and you're a consummate fan, and I see you're diving into the ocean of Joni's eras. Just a suggestion...take her album Blue, let it get to you, then you might want to see the transition coming in "The Hissing of Summer Lawns." Some say it isn't her best, but one of my favs, and she breaks out into another realm.❤❤
I think a lot of us Joni-lovers would say, “You hear Joni when you’re ready to hear Joni!” After she leaves the piano there, she ambles over to a chair and picks up a mountain dulcimer and plays & sings “California” just to blow your mind. I’d really also recommend “Help Me”, just a brilliant and huge radio hit… and A Case of You… One more fave of mine is the Hejira album… find the live concert version where her stage band includes Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays. You’re doing great!
Knew you'd love her, she's got pure poetry in her. My other favorite female artist is k.d. lange...especially her rendition of Crying. Would love to see your reaction. Love ya Pope! ❤😊
One of the greatest folk songs of all time! Tge lyrics, music, and Joni’s voice makes this tune that will live on for a thousand years!Joni has fifty or sixty more unforgettable tunes so here are some you need to react to; A Case of You, Raised On Robbery,River, Free Man in Paris, and Help Me!You will be a fan for life!
Never too late to this party! This was from earlier in the same 1970 BBC TV concert that she ends with Big Yellow Taxi and Both Sides Now. Other great stuff from this concert.
I don't think any other song has ever captured a "mood" as this song has. My head is always transported back to those days of peace and love and hope when I hear it. 55 years later... Who is that old guy in the mirror? Funny that I was supposed to go to Woodstock too and never made it. Great reaction. ☮✌
Great Reaction, you should check Joni Mitchell and her friends on the Dick Cavett Show *Day after Woodstock* Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane and David Crosby Discuss Woodstock Festival | The Dick Cavett Show
She's something, isn;t she? So many great Joni songs for you to hear. Check out her Blue LP. You will really enjoy that one. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂
They video recorded other songs form the concert you just saw Find the one called California from that same studio recording You will love it And then listen to For Free My personal favorite
-I- was late to the party- and I'm over 50!! I only really started listening to her in the last couple years. Because of reactors like you! And I'm so grateful - I feel like listening to her expands my soul. So happy you have found her, too. 😊
The most dynamic lyricist! Her word choices to explain things. She obviously impacted many others. Even Prince! I grew up and played the album 'Blue' endlessly. Once you tune in you may get lost there for awhile.
May I suggest the album Blue. Rolling Stone rated it one of the top ten albums of all time. Also, her friends had a huge hit with an upbear arrangement of Woodstock. They were top tier songwriters themselves. She also dated James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and Graham Nash. Her songwriting evolved into all genre, especially jazz. Thanks for your wonderful reaction.
"We are billion year old carbon, caught in the Devil's bargain"
We need to remember who We really are- spiritual beings in a human body and regain Paradise Lost❤🌎🌍🌏✨
She's a poet, alright...
Pretty much...
Her phrases "billion year old carbon" and "we are stardust" are actually derived from relatively new scientific discoveries at that time: Carbon is made in the hearts of stars, and since we're all made of carbon (among other things), we are LITERALLY stardust. It's a great poetic insight.
Love those apples (figs)!
"And i dreamed I saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky and they were turning into butterflies above our nation"......ain't that something?

i get choked up every time she gets to the line about dreaming about the bombers turning to butterflies. So friggin' beautiful
Your soul has been waiting for her vibration POPE
When she goes high, it makes me cry.
Oh how I love to see young people so appreciative of our goddess Joni!! ❤❤❤
I grew up with her! I was born in the 50's. She's one of the GREATS! Singer songwriters Ever. "A Case Of You" from the Album, Blue!!!
Tears pouring down my face to watch this human being express something so poignant, so wistful, so beautiful. She is golden.
I really like her too!
A little song that changed the world!!
I always play and sing her version. Its so real.So honest.
It is all about God!! and that's all...thank you for your reaction. anything that can open our hearts, I am open
I feel like this song became an anthem for the hippy generation. Very deep lyrics, and I think a very important moment for society. A very long and masterful catalog.
It's hippie.
She sang the dreams of our generation!
Her poetic lyrics and spectacular voice is so captivating. I was fortunate to see her and Jackson Browne in 1972, at the Berkeley community Theatre. I was completely mesmerized by her performance.
My all-time favorite singer-songwriter. One of the best ever all the way around -- singer, songwriter, poet....
welcome to the party, Joni is awesome, been listening to her for 50+ years
Joni wrote this for her friends, the group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young who were performing that very first day of the Woodstock Festival. Free man in Paris is my favorite of hers.
She's an icon. A poet. Singer. Musician. And fine artist. I love her album Court and Spark.

Can I just say what a pleasure it is for young people to enjoy & appreciate the music I grew up with??!! She is a poet…
Joni is the best. 'Amelia' and 'A Case of You' are must listens.
Carol King is the Queen of that era in the canyon.
Joni is an artist's artist. She is on par with Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, etc., as one of the greatest artists of all time.
Ahhhhh! Back to a time when artists actually had talent. No auto tune, no tricks, no frills...just pure unadulterated musicianship. You should check out Joni's songs The River and Help Me.

She is AMAZING. I rate her as a songwriter right up there with Dylan. Try “A Case of you”.

Utterly haunting. Trust the soft spoken.

I love River by Joni. Give it a listen.
J M doing her song California on the Johnny Cash tv show playing a freaking dulcimer! You've got to see it. It's on my playlist.
Dig your vibe
This live version is good but the original studio single version is the bomb!😮😊
We all loved her in the early 70s

Please react to “For Free”. Great story telling! 🎶
Joni is also well known as an accomplished guitarist by those in the business. Peace out.
I cry when i hear thisxxxx
Did you just hear the sound of God?❤
The most dynamic lyricist! Her word choices to explain things. She obviously impacted many others. Even Prince! I grew up and played the album 'Blue' endlessly. Once you tune in you may get lost there for awhile.
Now go check out the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version of this! An equally good, harder-edged version of this same unique song.
Listen to her albums Blue and Court and Spark to start.
