  • Paolo Nespoli, unfortunately has had to terminate his education experiment Greenhouse in Space due to the fact he noticed some fungus growing beside one of the plants. In this video, he takes great care to explain exactly what
has happened and shows us all the procedures that are necessary on the ISS to maintain a safe environment. Although Paolo managed to grow some healthy plants in one of his greenhouses, no risks can be taken.
Paolo encourages all the children participating in the Greenhouse experiment to carry on trying to grow Arabidopsis from seed to seed as this is important for the future of long duration and distance space travel.

GMT (since this is the time kept on ISS) and probably the time where his family are living. Sometimes the astronauts also wear watches that are part of one of the ISS experiments - a heartrate monitor for example.

I believe their is some sort of a microbiology sampler on the ISS. As a Chemistry student I would have collected the whole apparatus including the plants and the fungus, stored them in the MELFI Freezer, and brought them home for analysis. You can better tell what actually is the problem.

I was very happy to hear when this started, I am sad about the results, but I suppose the first time aint the charm :D I am quite shocked that it is going to be burnt on reentry tho, shouldn't we analyze the mold and specimin to see if we can do something difft next time to make it better? I hope I get to be the ISS gardener someday - that would not even be a remote possibiltiy without this preliminary research ! Great job everyone and thanks ESA

I'm not a salad fan, but salad on Mars sounds delicious.

@infera1 The reason these experiments are conducted is to better research if we are able to create self-sustained food sources with plants in contained environments. Creating self-sustained, self-contained food systems is important in space.

I would love it was made more experiments shows on the ISS and one would be two strings with both balls attached each side being throw rotating to check if they stay together in the centre axis.... For example...

I wonder if he'll get back to earth, forget about the gravity, let go of a bag in midair and expect it to be suspended

Paolo Nespoli will fly to ISS again on 30 May 2017, as a part of Expedition 52/53.

Could it be because there is no sunlight? Might that be the reason that the seeds won't grow?

You can grow with artificial light...

So after two decades in space we know pretty much nothing about growing plants, I thought that this sort of experiments had been done long time ago, how difficult could it be, put a seed in the pot, wrap it air tight plastic and watch it grow

If there's a possibility of an airborne threat which he's protecting himself from then why the hell there's no such protection for the whole station and other crew members... What kind of safety regulations is this ..

    that was actualy lame.
I wish they could make more awesome experiments with zero gravity.
Like with water or stuff flying in air.
