Hello! I don't think I ever comment on youtube, but your tutorials are extremely helpful, got a banjo 6 months ago and although I've been playing stringed instruments many years now (mostly guitar, but others like ukulele, bouzouki etc), I really struggled in the beginning. I'm from Greece and banjo is very uncommon, I don't think there is even one teacher around here. I feel I can already play more than I could think of thanks to your videos. So, a big thank you from me!
Thanks for sharing. Do you have a banjo with a double cut peghead? I'm wondering if it's possible to reshape a RK 35 peghead, if it's wide enough to handsaw down and I know you have a RK 35.
Hi Mr Jim. I am one of your younger(14) students. Cool song can't wait to learn it! I am working on Dooley right now. I Like your banjo having a clear head. I was wondering how long did it take for your other banjos to get the black spot from your finger? Kind of a weird question but just wondering. One more question have you ever heard of the Christian singer David Crowder and if you have do you listen to his songs? You would like his song My Beloved. Its got banjo in it. Sorry for the long comment but just had a few questions.
@@rachaelearley1857 Yea sure! Thats from his album Neon Steeple. have you heard his new album Milk and Honey? Theres a song on it called Glory Glory(God is able) its awesome!
I like your banjo case . I sort of looks familiar . Could it be a gold tone fiberglass case ? Or maybe a Crossrock ? They are both made by the same people .
I watched one of your videos where you were advertising a product to hang your banjo on the wall, can't find the video or the product name if you wouldn't mind replying with the info thanks
I thought so, I’m working on being able to “call out the Key” in our weekly Jams. As a stepping stone, play songs in a different key. I would encourage anyone learning to get into a local jam. There are many novice groups.
Hey Jim, backup is the hardest thing for most banjo players and your series on backup, especially the one with 3 licks, has helped me more than anything. Why not take it a step further? Why not start teaching backup for specific songs? I don't think anyone is doing that. Everyone is teaching the songs, but no one is teaching the backup for those songs. Why not put together really good backup arrangements for popular songs and offer those for lessons?
Here's the thing... you shouldn't be memorizing ANY of this - especially backup. How's that going to work if you do? You can't predict how someone else is going to play a song. There may be extra verses.. extra beats... all sorts of things. The thing about backup is being able to create it as it happens. Honestly, that's the whole point of even lead breaks too. If you're applying what I'm teaching, then you should be able to create your own backup for any given situation.
@@JimPankey This is still me, just a different account. Speaking from someone who is learning, I think it would provide a great foundation to build on. As a software developer, there are snippets of code that are used over and over. Kinda like licks. You learn to write a program and you build on what you learned to write another program. I learned the backup you taught in that RUclips video and I’ve been applying what I learned to other songs. If you did more of that, I would learn the backup routines and once I learned them I could adapt them to other songs, make changes, etc. After all, there’s an old joke that goes, how do you tell bluegrass songs apart? The answer is, by the song title. While meant to be funny, I think that joke has a wee bit of truth to it. Learning the ingredients is one thing, but measuring them out, mixing them up, and baking them to produce a cake (or a song) comes from experience, which comes from practice, and you have to have some foundational knowledge before you can practice. Anyhow, I’m rambling now, but just based on how much that one video helped me, I still think it would be a great idea.
@@williamporter9703 Formula is this... figure out the chords. Apply the stuff I've taught already. You're looking for an easy way out... there's not one.
@@JimPankey We’re going to have to agree to disagree, but I’m NOT looking for an easy way out. I practice at least 1 to 2 hours every day and I’m constantly forcing myself to learn new things. Piano was the first instrument I learned to play. I’d learn a song and things I learned from one song I would modify and use in others. It would be the same way with playing backup (for me anyways). Thanks anyhow. I still enjoy your videos and find them extremely helpful.
Thanks Jim . You really make learning tunes like this really easy to learn.
Thanks ☺️
Great video Jim! I can’t wait to play this once my “conversation finger” heals up. Been playing too much! All thanks to you
I know what you mean! sometimes i play too long and have to wait a day or too before my fingers get the energy back;)
You can do it!
Wow this one's fun to play. Faster the better! Thanks Jim
Just don’t play it faster than you can sing it. 😊
Another one bites the dust! Thanks again Jim for showing us how it's done and making it easy at the same time. We love ya... Tina Scott
Glad I can help 😀

What a fun and NOT HARD to learn tune - loved learning it! We love the "chestnuts."
Can't wait to hear you play it!
Beautiful arrangement

Thanks for watching ☺️
You always make it seems so easy and effortless! Been wanting to learn this one, thanks for the lesson Jim!
You can do it!
Hey Jim! Great videos as always. Would love to see a blue ridge mountain blues Scruggs style if you so choose! Appreciate all the helpful lessons!
Awesome Jim thank you! Ready for some more Clawhammer videos! 👊
Maybe soon. I really have nothing in mind though...
@@JimPankey snowdrop maybe or Reuben ! Anything you feel like doing would be great ! I love your version of country blues too!!

Thanks Jim, the lessons are very helpful. Treasure. Would like if you could have the time to do a Sea Of Heartbreak lesson sometime
I rarely play that tune as it never really comes up…. Doubt I’ll ever do a tutorial for it.

☺️ thanks
thanks jim!
You’re welcome ☺️
Hey Jim! Great video! Could you do a video lesson for battle hymn of the republic?
Probably not... You could, however, try to apply some of the skills I teach in my beginner series and see what you could come up with.
Will do thanks!
when i die won’t you bury me on that mountain, far away in my blue ridge mountain home!
Yup!
Make it look so easy.
It is easy. You can do it!
Kick ass Jim!!
Thanks!
Hey jim! do you think you’ll ever do a tutorial on pony express! Keep up the great work you’ve taught me so much
I’ve never kept that one in my brain. It’s not a friendly jam tune.
J.D. Pankey!
Thanks

I do have a double cut, but the 35 headstock can’t be reshaped to that. But why change for the 35’s classic Gibson RB1 shape?
Thank YOU🎶👍
Thanks for listening
Good video jim. Any suggestions for the breaks?
This works for that

Not sure on how long it took to wear a spot... just keep picking, it'll happen. Not familiar with David Crowder.

It can be in whatever key. I’m teaching in G, but if you wanted to be in A you’d capo at 2.

Don’t like those clear banjo heads, takes the classic vibe away. 😝 like putting a mini skirt on grandma.
Clear heads were the classic vibe in the late 60s and 70s.
@@JimPankey funny, same time the miniskirt was popular!
Started on clearing mine with my pinky finger. Got a ways to go.
