Today I completely destroyed my eyeshadow palettes to make/turn them into PAINT?! Watercolor paint to be exact. It was SO much fun and surprisingly works really well. I used my old Urban Decay palettes for this. They are expired and I no longer use them so in order to reduce waste I decided to upcycle them!

Hi all! As with anything like this - always wear a mask or respirator. If I had been using normal paint pigments or mica (that aren't made to go on your face) I would have. But I didn't since it's eyeshadow that gets put onto your eyes/gets powdery anyway. However, gum arabic is messy and I wasn't expecting it so definitely use it somewhere well ventilated and mask up (with a proper mask to prevent particles getting through) with it! Also, I probably could have done a little more research, others have informed me of some stuff I wasn't aware of since I just watched the tik tok videos where it worked great. I've had a lot of insanely busy stuff going on behind the scenes that I'll be able to reveal very soon, but for now I don't have a lot of time to film and edit let alone deep dive research more than what I did. I won't lie, I am not really enjoying filming right now. I don't have a proper studio set up like many of my friends do, I film in a walk in closet lol so the passion isn't fully there right now and if it shows, I'm sorry!
Plus I'll always miss things - there will always be people who correct me to inform me of things I don't know! It's how I learn especially when people know more about a medium I've never used before, I'm going through a trial and error process and literally showing you that process. Most people don't film when they learn something new and I do so I'll always do things wrong! That being said, I respect that I have an audience watching so going forward I'll make sure I look into this paint making process/safety precautions more too, I just felt it was pretty harmless using a tik tok video to make eyeshadow into paint - if you've been here a while you know I'm not a tutorial channel/overly serious channel. But if it ever appears I haven't done my research, I do apologize for that!
Dont let the comments eat you up, you work hard to provide entertaining content for people to watch for free. If you ever want to try this again you can message me on insta on my shop account @watchmemixstuff and I can give you some pointers and links to cheap things to snag to make the process easier. Don’t worry about the people being rude, experimenting and art are all in good fun. While this is your job, you still need to take care of you and your mental health, you can’t know absolutely everything about every craft 💜
i think you did a lovely job! you must check out pear fluers channel, she makes paints with crushed pigments. it is extremely satisfying to watch.

Thanks of being aware of these things but don't let people make you feel bad about mistakes, lack of knowledge, lack of time, etc. Everyone makes mistakes but not everyone learns from their mistakes like you do with such grace. This was a great video and I was happy to spend part of my Thursday night with you and some eyeshadow paint!
Btw, I make handmade watercolors and sell them. The clove oil is a preservative to help prevent mold from the water mixing with the gum Arabic. The clove oil isn’t going to make your paints more archival or light fast like that poster said. 🤗
The pigment itself is what is light fast or archival, the light fastness cannot be changed. Some pigments like ochres and oxides can be super light fast, while micas that are in eyeshadow and such are made more with synthetic dyes and such that are not light fast.
Wow that’s so cool! :O
@@user-ol1ox2uy2y yeah it’s a super fun thing to do!! 🤩 but there is a lot of science behind it that isn’t common knowledge or easily available. I probably did 100s of hours of research before starting my shop and I still go through and read new things and watch videos like this to see if I can learn stuff from other makers. (Or even just enjoy watching people be creative 🥰)
Where’s your shop ? Etsy ?
@@jazz5842 my Etsy and my Instagram are both @WatchMeMixStuff 🥰🥰
That’s really interesting! I wanna try that now lol 😂
Wait, eyeshadow expires after 2 years!? I've been using the same palette for like 5 years.....I think it's time to make some paint. XD
Awesome video Chloe!
hiii
Lol 😆😹 u should really buy a new pallette and maybe make paint out of the left overs of ur palettes
I am suprised that eyeshadow expires after *ONLY* 2 years!
Uh...2 years 0~0 ?! Yeah, I’ve definitely been using my palettes for at least 5 years as well😂💦
As long as the colours haven't changed in terms of texture, gotten spotty or crusty, and the pans have rusted it will be fine to use. Legally they have to add an expiry date, but if you are the only one using the palette it shouldn't be an issue.
I've got a jar of dirt. guess what's inside it.
literally my favorite thing jack has ever said
and to make it better it was just johnny depp ad libbing
That and "rock...never seen that one before" in the 3rd film, his face when he licks it is hilarious also 😅
@@iniyama2 he is a legend
I have a jar of dirt.... It has a centipede in it named Johnny because of that scene!!
The heart of Davy Jones!!!
Actually, cosmetic glitter is mica, a non-metallic mineral. It's shiny, but it's not metal. I had a sample of raw mica in a kit for my grade 3 science class while I was homeschooled. It was like shiny, tranlucent and brittle tissue paper, maybe a bit reminiscent of cellophane. Also, I'm pretty sure it's the knife sticking to the magnet lmao
It is so calming and satisfying watching you scrape that pigment out of the palettes. That was one sweet looking octopus!! 🐙
Hello checkmark
@@io5340 haha lol your not going to fool anyone but it will work for some people lol
For a good alternative to a paint muller, You can use a piece of glass from a picture frame as the base(much better than plastic) with a vase or glass with a totally flat bottom...... The plastic is probably preventing the pigment from grinding down and mixing properly. You can check if it's mulled enough but swatching it, letting it dry and rubbing the swatch with a paper towel. If pigment comes up you probably need to grind it more or adjust the mix. every pigment will take a different amount of binder and need a different amount of grinding. It takes a lot of experimenting😊 arleebean has some great introductory videos.
You can go to a local second hand shop and find a glass with a totally flat bottom!
@@randomunicorn-artsandcreat3460 She said in a reply to the pinned comment that she can't go out to stores to protect her mom, you know with the virus going around
FYI: the tool that is used to combine the dry pigment into the liquid binder is called a muller, not a grinder. The muller is designed to separate all of the micro particles and help coat them fully in the gum arabic so they combine into a smooth paint, rather than actually grinding down the particles further. I went to a seminar on this a couple of years ago, lol!
Mixing watercolors into their binder can sometimes take hours of milling and not all pigments are created equal, some require much more pigment to binder ratio, some take less. Tbh considering how you just started and had limited supplies, you did really well! But if you were curious why the texture was weird, it's probably bc it may have required more grinding into the binder.
Fun fact about that Pirates of the Caribbean clip: None of the other actors knew Depp was going to do that so all of their reactions are 100% accurate
sometimes i feel like so much in potc was unscripted that they just released Johnny, Keira and Orlando in the carribean and told them to act like 17th century pirates and filmed the result. XD
I didn’t know that cool fact!
@@xxpotatofriesxx9152 you should look up some fun facts about those movies, the amount of credit Depp should get for that character is unbelievable.
@@natasha8007 ok! I will
Wow that’s cool I love pirates of the Caribbean and Depp did such a good job with Jack Sparrow’s character and personality
Also if you do this again, get a coffee/espresso tamper. It’s a cheap alternative to a muller that’s used to grind down pigments when making paint. You generally don’t use a mortar and pestle because it’s harder to scrape the paint out.
That's so smart!!!!
I've been looking into making paint and looking for muller alternatives. I'm very grateful for this comment!
@@stolenzephyr I’m glad I could help! I started out making paints with a paper weight and a large piece of tile from my local hardware store 🤗 you don’t need super expensive stuff until you know it’s a hobby you want to commit to because it can be expensive. I’d definitely recommend the tamper over the paperweight because the paperweight is awkward to hold 🤣 you can also grab cheap micas and stuff off of Amazon or your local art supply store. Jacquard pigments are fairly easy to find and that’s what most people start with for mica paints.
Or just the back of a spoon.
@@coreymorse1347 back of a spoon won’t crush the pigments evenly or properly, it’s good in a pinch with minute amounts of pigment but if you want the best success you need two flat surfaces to grind the pigments between. The mortar and pestle would be a better alternative to the spoon.
If you like more opaque colors, next time do it with acrylic binder instead of watercolor binder, that’ll do the trick!
I would love a part 2 with the grinder and a larger painting this was definitely fun to watch!
Everyone used to laugh at me as I always painted with eyeshadow at school as I liked sparkle and shimmer and had no pastels of my own. I set my pictures with hairspray as I was too young to know that professional setting sprays existed. It was nice as you got different effects with different brushes and sponge applicators.
This will be a really interesting video, as I'll be able to use this binder with my mica powders to make paint too. Thankyou xxx
I don't know if it's just my headphones but the audio sometimes gets really loud at the start of a clip and then gets quieter gradually
Im not hearing headphones and had the same thought
Totally irrelevant, but Chloe's hair was looking amazing today.
(Not that it doesn't always look good!)
Glitter is actually plastic, not metal! Most aren't biodegradable sadly, but some people have made more ecofriendly types. Still a really fun way to use up what you have with out throwing it out!
Maybe true! But metallic eye shadow has metal in it anyway (tin!) and mascara has metal in it too (iron oxide!). I know because I am allergic to both!
Not all glittery things are plastic. A lot of makeup is mica powder, which is a mineral.
I think craft glitter is plastic but most make up like said before has Iron Oxide in it.
@Tiffany Sandmeier Yeah, but that's not much better, seeing as a lot of mica is mined via child labor
This may have been changed since the 90s, but (craft) glitter (used to be) is made from glass. I’ve cut my eye and had to wear an eye patch, and use a cream in my eye, for over a week 2 times. Both were from craft glitter and my dr, at the time, told me that it’s made from glass and that’s why it’s so dangerous for kids to play with it.
The amount of binder that you need depends on the pigment that you are using, and in particular, on the particle size.
Honey acts as a humectant. Unless you live somwhere dry, you probably don't need it. If your paint is cracking as it dries, the honey will help with that.
Chalk pastels work amazingly well as a cheap paint pigment, too. A bit better than eye shadow, IMO. I love the way you improvised a muller. I started making paint using just a plate from the dollar store and a paper weight as a muller and, while a very cheap set up, worked as well as the more expensive equipment I later invested in (even if with a bit more difficulty).
“It is so much fun when you remember that glitter is metal that you stick on your eye balls “ lol Chloe 😂🤣😅
Plus it’s bad for the environment (shards of plastic that can’t be filtered easily)
Btw I mean craft glitter not like metal on ur eyes
@@eliaahmad4399 um.. there’s biodegradable version
People already on RUclips came rushing down to watch Chloe
That is me! 😂
I was actually asleep since it’s nighttime here and my notification wake me up so I saw the Vedio.😅
I did that 🤭
Pipette would help immensly in this! Everybody should have at least one pipette at home!
I love when you REALLY test it out in an actual painting
I know it doesn't matter for smaller projects like this that are just tests/for fun, but the people who make paints mull the pigments for much longer. Like over an hour
Oh my gosh, I had no idea. That seems like such a long time! Thanks for sharing.
Rest In Peace all those eye shadow pallets, we will not forget you 😔
And WELCOME beautiful paint 🎨 your mother Chloe is an awesome artist!! ☺️

god that palette is so iconic that I have to admit this hurts my heart a little bit, but I’m excited to see what gets made
I hate make up. I don't do my make up. Ever. Much to my mother's dismay. She gives me huge pallets every year. I still have one with like 20 colors that she got me in 2012 as a 'please please please do you make up. Your skin will age and not look as pretty and then you will wish you knew how." (I was 11 when this started, i am now late 20s.)
Funny thing is My skin is still flawless. However now I have something to do with all these really old pallets that I genuinely dont' really know what to do with. She finally gave up last year after i took the last few to a Battered Woman's Shelter.
Your mother sounds like she has major self esteem issues and deep rooted insecurities.
I mean I love make-up personally but what does a 20-colour eyeshadow palette have to do with ageing skin? That’s not gonna help much lol. Good on you for not getting pressured into it, make-up should be fun and if it isn’t fun for you then you don’t need it!
I rarely wear makeup. Usually I only wear it once in a blue moon if I want to put some on; if I’m going to certain kinds of events; or if I’m acting in a play/performing on stage.
I’ve thought about doing this for so long with my expired eyeshadows. I’ve been saving them in a pile lool I’m glad to know it kinda works :)
I am so early that there is no Rae's comment and it's shocking😱🤣
I came to say literally the same thing!!
the pirates of the caribbean clip startled a laugh out of me i haven’t watched those films in ages and it was very clever haha
The Pirate’s of the Caribbean video splice SENT ME🤣🤣🤣🤣

Chloe you are a serious art Queen! No one, NO ONE pushes the envelope as often as you do. You are so inspiring! Ty for your great videos. By the way, you did really well considering you didn't have an actual grinder. You are amazing! Those colours tho! Wow! Considering that is out of date makeup, that's really inspiring!
I started making nail polish for the exact same reason! I’ve got pigments/shadows as old as 8 years because they’re too beautiful to just throw them away. So now, I can safely enjoy the colors on my nails ❤️
I’ve been essentially homeless for a year and a half, when I get all of my makeup out of storage, it’s going to be expired, and I have a lot of it... ooooh this is gonna be fun.
Someone said that they're just legally required to put an expiration date, so if you test it on your arm for a few hours and nothing bad happens they should still be safe to use
Most powdered make up is ok to use after the expiration date if you make an allergy test before using it and make sure you don't get any negative reaction on the area during or on the days following the application.
I hope your situation improves soon.
Something that will help is a muller not a grinder. The muller helps distribute the binder to coat all the pigment so you don't have the gritty issue. Those purple and blue colors are notoriously a pain to make paint with! It's so awesome that you were able to get them to work! There are some really informative videos here on RUclips that will point you in the right direction if you want to make some more paint! I really want to make my own paint too! I love the idea of using old eyeshadows to experiment! It's a great way to learn without buying the crazy expensive paint pigments.
If only chloe had that grinder, the creating of this video would have been easier.
Also i found that orange-red colour really pretty.
I absolutely lost it when it cut to Jack with his jar🤣
Was about to go to sleep but your vedios are so irresistable that I took the pain to watch it whole ❤️❤️
I'm so happy you went ahead with this
I just watched your art hacks video this morning. Nice to see the follow-up so soon!
For anyone of you who wants to make paint with eyeshadows but does not have the Binder here is a little life hack :
break down the compressed eyeshadow pigment with a dotting tool (this helps you break it finer )
add a little amount of PVA glue / Elmer's glue and mix with a paintbrush
voila!!! now you have acrylic paint
Hope this helps :)
Why glue?
I feel like eyeshadow doesn’t actually expire, they just have to legally add a date. If you’ve taken care of it it’s fine for longer.
I have a eye shadow pallet from 2012 and it works just like one I bought this year. Idk if its because I wash my brushes a lot but I've never had a problem. 🙃
Yeah, I don't pay attention to expiration dates for pressed powders
Spritz with alcohol. Let dry. Bam. Sanitized lol
Its just legal guaranteed "still ok" date. Lotta shadows can last for years long as the pigments don't get a weird texture or the bottom pan doesn't rust out.
Chole, I have only been following your channel for a little while now. I think you're fun, inventive and engaging. I've been wanting to try out "painting with makeup" but using eye shadow more like pan pastels but this took "painting with makeup" to a whole new level!

"It's fun when you remember glitter is tiny metal you put on your eyes"
Me, with glitter on my eyes: 👀:0
a lot of them r actually plastic nut not biodegradable
I've done something similar, I've made iridescent watercolors using pigments from tkbtrading, which is a site for pigments to make makeup, but it's a lot cheaper, and doesn't have the extra additives, worked much better, and have made some awesome paintings on black paper.
I prayed on her making this video even tho I’m an atheist. IT ACTUALLY WORKED. But that’s just because she is one of the best RUclipsr’s ever and deserves more activity on her page!
Arleebean makes watercolour paints mostly like the way you're doing it. She has lots of videos binding the pigment. She says that it takes times, if you mix everything like an hour or so, it will be more blended.
When I've done this, I've done my mixing with a toothpick in tiny jars. Then, I transfer it into half pans (or back into the eyeshadow pallette, if that's what I'm using as my pigment) and let it dry.
Looked great, loved the colour on the octopus.
I have a feeling I’m gonna destroy my eyeshadow now....back to my old destroyed pallets from when I was 10 that I used to pigment slimes...ooooof
Oh god i did that too x.x
The purple and the green colour has a little bit of glitter in it so when you use it on canvas or paper the glitter does not mix with the paint and turns kinda transparent. I had a glitter paint and when I opened it the glitter comes on the top and there is only little pigment and a lot of water.
I was thinking of doing this with my UD electric pallete :) The fact you showed yours was great!
I love you so much! You gave me the courage to make art, and to show it to others. Thank you for all you do, and for being brave every day!!!!
That was so cool!

I'm new in ur channel and the first thing I love already is ur accent😍😍😍😍
It worked! Great for a first time mixing it up yourself x
I love your sarcasm chloe!
I’ve actually been waiting for this !
I've followed that tiktoker for a while and she actually started with just a plastic lid as her muller and got great results before finally getting an official glass one.
I like her because she makes the process so approachable
And yes, like the other comments said, you use a muller not a grinder. It's just a flat object you press and swirl the paint with on a flat surface
2:13
You have good taste in pirate movies 🙃
That worked out way better than expected! I will definitely need to make some paint.
The back of a spoon might have been a helpful tool for incorporating the color. And honestly just more space/room to mix.
The back of the spoon makes a pretty effective grinder replacement. :D
Hi my love espresso tampers are really good for making water colours which is what Emdoessketches uses to mull her watercolours! Also I think you add a little too much of the binder to some of them but the orange one looked perfect!
Your vid came at just the right timeeeeee. I've been trying to fix my watercolor pallet and couldnt figure out what ingredient i was missing so thank you so much. those paint grinding vids are my obsession rn.
Me thinking while watching the video-

Chloe- oh!! I am just scraping some makeup to make some paint and then make a beautiful Painting out of it.
Chloe's mom- that's very weird tho!
Chloe- ya I know!
😂😂😂
Ps - please don't be offended it was just a thought!
Been lookin' forward to this! Awesome 😊
😭😭😂 Please try this video again but with the grinder please, it'll make all the difference! Also, I think the glass grinder people normally use are specific for paint making, the one you ordered might still not do quite the job.
Love you chloe!
Big fan! ❤️❤️
the olive oil is a preservant, it makes it so that the paints dont grow mold over time, it has nothing to do with the actual lightfastness of the paint.
The pigment might be repelling based on your palette! I would highly recommend using a plane of glass from a picture frame instead if you were to do this in the future. Love the video!
I've been watching chloe for a year and i still cany believe she doesn't have 1 mil subs i mean come on guys she deserves 1 mil lets try to get her to 1 mil and thank you chloe foe all your effort in your vids thay are very funny and entertaing i hope you see my comment♥️
OMG. Every time I see eyeshadow ads I’m over here like WHY ARE THOSE NOT WATERCOLORS 😱
I really like the way you are and of course your art, too.
🎨🖌️When grinding the eye shadow into paint, do not roll over the paint.
This is not the right way to grind!
It's ok that she had rolled it, because she is exploring this way of making paint.
But the correct way to grind is to,
Use it on a flat surface that makes it easy to remove the paint as in scrape it into one single place after grinding.
Get an object if you don't have a grinder and use the flat part and move the paint around in circles.
This will further mix the paint with the binder and make it more like a painting consistency. Do this multiple times till it's nice ,thick and smooth.
After doing so scrape it with something like a butter knife without the nubs at the end and scrape it into a pile, after doing so you may use it as a paint. I posted another comment with a ⚠️warning⚠️
Thank you for reading 🎨🖌️
Edit: This comment is not to be rude
"it looks like saggy skin." Chloe, you absolutely had me in laughing fits. I adore your humor so much, and your artwork is lovely! Thank you for making my night even better :)
The clover making the pain the archival is just a fancy way of saying it'll keep the binder for molding

i love chloe's videos bcz she always lift up my mood, thank u for that
So, I have made homemade paint before and well I did it different.
I used: Eyeshadow, Mod Podge, and a little water.
Crush up the eyeshadow, add Mod Podge, and little bit of water!
And then boom.
Paint.
I made coffee paint used gum Arabic and a vey small amount of honey. I think the honey keeps it from getting moldy. It’s now 2 years old and looks fine. And it doesn’t dry sticky. Just need a drop or two.
This is my favorite eyeshadow palette, they don’t make it anymore, so watching this video hurt me lol I do completely respect that it is expired and recycling it into a new purpose is a great idea, however! Great video!
I think you did a great job you a amazing artist!
For a pestle and mortar alternative, maybe use the back of a spoon in a dish, or an egg cup and the other end of a paintbrush, or the end of a rolling pin in a dish, or....
