How to Build a Modular File Cabinet Desk Console

  • It was incredibly difficult to decide how to title this video. It's an office console, a desk, a filing cabinet, a shelf. I can't just call it ONE thing because it's modular and can be MULTIPLE things.
    How's that for multipurpose furniture??
    This video will show you how to build the basic component of the project--the cabinet carcasses. Then, from there, you can decide whether you want to add shelves, a door, or drawers...AND if you want the drawers to be filing cabinet drawers or not.
    So many decisions!
    This project was sponsored by ‪@HomeDepot‬ as part of the #THDProSpective Tool Review Program.

    It doesn't get any more versatile than that and there's not a lot of crazy, time consuming, fancy rabbet cuts and dado joints. That's an impressive amount of work you put into your website to supplement the video.

    I think making the toe kick like you did in this video, since it is modular, was the best way to go. When I made my kitchen cabinet, I would go with the traditional notch out way, simply because they would be attached and to end and would make more sense visually and functionally. Well done.

    I love your designs and how easy you make it look. But in reality it is much harder. Can I ask you what number of tooth blades you in your circular saw and your miter saw? Also, when I try to make cuts my final pieces always seems to be a ‘hair’ off. Any suggestions (or maybe you have a video that shows how) on where to position the blade relative to the cut line? And one more final question - any suggestions for making the dados without a table saw (I don’t have one)? Thanks for any answers you can provide.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  3 года назад +1

      I found your comment. It was filtered out because it contained a keyword I've banned from my comments. Thank you, but, I don't make it "look easy," it just really is easy. I keep finish blades in both my miter and circular saw. You can see the exact blades I use here:
      www.woodshopdiaries.com/workshop-101-part-3-workshop-mvps/
      Also, when cutting, you need to cut on the "waste" side of the line. So whatever direction you measured from (left or right side of the board), cut on the opposite side of the line. If you measured from the left, cut on the right side of the line--that's the waste side.
      And also, you can make dadoes with a circular saw and an edge guide (or clamp a straight edge). I show this in the video when I made the slots for the file folders. But, if you don't want to mess with dadoes for drawers, you can just glue and staple the plywood bottom onto the drawer box and that works fine, too.

    The edge of my plywood is never squared when I use the kreg rip guide. Even when I use an angle finder to verify before cutting... Very frustrating...

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  3 года назад +1

      I’m sorry you’re having issues. Is it an issue with the bevel angle? Have you verified the blade guard isn’t rubbing on the sled and pushing the blade one direction or another? Also, check that your bevel angle is actually set to 90. Or if it’s an issue with not cutting straight, it does take some practice and the start and finish are the most critical part. You have to keep the guide very tight to the edge of the board while starting. If you start off crooked, it’ll be crooked.
