Born in Toronto, Ontario,[2] Healey was raised in the city's west end. He was adopted as an infant;[3] his adoptive father was a firefighter. When he was almost one year old, Healey lost his sight due to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes.[2] His eyes had to be surgically removed, and he was given ocular prostheses. he was on 1984 roadhouse movie.
I went to school with his dad's brothers daughter. She showed us pictures from family reunions before he passed. He was the light of the party
Jeff Healy is one of the most underrated guitarist that last century for sure and yes he is blind. I believe he learned how to play from listening without an example of how it should be played because he’s blind.
He’s also dead
He died of retina cancer, not that long ago
Definitely lose based
Yes, Jeff was in ROADHOUSE, the best line Patrick Swayze; "You play pretty good for a blind white boy" Jeff Healey; "And I thought you'd be bigger"
Yes!! Love this one!!
Agreed!
Jeff singing "Angel Eyes" always makes me stop and listen. Great voice, Great song. Hope you will check out that song/video.
Angel Eyes was one of my favorites!!
Yes!! My favorite of his! ❤
@@angelaward7624Yes! Jeff’s version is great. Originally done byJohn Hiatt, one of America’s great songwriters.
Please do Angel Eyes!
It's so ironic with him singing it, and it's so beautiful!
Healey was discovered by SRV. They actually played a song together live....."Look at little sister". Worth a look. Stevie loved the guy. You can see him look at Healey and smile in the video while he riffs. Yeah this is blues.
Lucky enough to see both of them ❤
Yes Pegasus should react to that for sure !!!!!!
Stevie may have given him a leg up, certainly was a fan and a friend, Jeff was already on a trajectory for iconic status.
First saw him after hearing a lot about him at Grossman's in Toronto, down the street from the famed El Mocambo (SRV, Rolling Stones, etc.etc.). I'd gone to speak to a couple other guys, a guitarist I'd met some years before, and a bassist/producer who were backing up a hot new singer, Amanda Marshall. It was about '89(?), Jeff's birthday, and he was sitting in, wailing his ass off on guitar. Never introduced myself or actually met him, though many friends and acquaintances played with him. He was wearing one of the funniest tees I've ever seen, a cartoon dog with a seeing-eye dog type harness, standing on two legs, chewing his nails and looking like, "Uh-oh!" down an open manhole. 😂
Rest In Peace, Jeff, Mack(Dr. John- the Night Tripper)Rebennack, the pianist here, and sax legend David Sanborn, who intro'ed them.
Also some monster players in back: Marcus Miller, bass, and I believe Omar Hakim, drums. Loaded resumés, both those dudes.
Nice spot off the top on his blind status, great reaction, your intelligence, perspicacity, shared insights, and basic taste are much appreciated. Cheers, man.
😉👍🏻🎶❤️✨️🕊
He wasn't discovered by SRV , already well known in Canada but SRV helped expose him to US audiences.
@@Petestanton Yup you are absolutely correct and Stevie Ray respected and loved Jeff ❤️
Jeff Healey was one of the greatest blues/rock/jazz guitar players to ever live. Blind since an early age, he mastered several instruments including the guitar, trombone, and clarinet. He was also a big fan of big band swing music and made 3 swing albums in addition to more popular rock/blues music albums. His biggest hit was angel eyes in the late 90's. Other great songs from him include "I Need to be Loved", "Lost in Your Eyes", and "When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky." He left us way too soon at only 41 years old. He was one of the good guys.
Dr John piano player is crazy good. Right Place Wrong Time will make you smile. Great voice and pianist
Great one!!!
The most beautiful love song ever "Angel Eyes " by Jeff Healey. Amazing. This man could play
He was BLIND thats why he plays the guitar like that maybe you saw him in the movie ROADHOUSE
The original - not the horrible remake
He plays that way because he taught himself while he was too small for the guitar he had.
His blindness had nothing to do with it actually... At the age of 3, Jeff was given his first guitar for Christmas. Jeff's dad knew some 'Hawaiian style' (similar to a lap steel) so he set up the guitar with a high action and gave Jeff an iron bar slide to play with. He was still too small to hold the guitar, so they set it on the bed and Jeff banged away at it standing up. In Jeff's words, after a few years of 'torturing his parents with strange noises' he started trying to figure out how to play what he was hearing on records. They moved the action down to a more manageable height and Jeff started working out chords and such. He was already used to the guitar being flat, so that's how he continued... ~Rog

I was so honored to have The opportunity to meet him at a place he performed that I worked at.. he came behind the bar and asked if he could help pour drinks.. and I didn't know whether he was joking or not so I said " why not!?" He laughed and so did I... His humor and his humanity was so incredible... He is a legend and didn't let his blindness get in the Way of his music, his family or his life! When I hear him play I close my eyes and remember what an incredible person, and musician he was... Also he made "Roadhouse" a much better movie by performing in it..
💙💙💙💙💙🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Doctor John on piano. I saw him with BB King. The Doc is a beast.
This is blues and the piano player is the famous Dr. John from Dr. John and the Medicine show. There is a video with Jeff playing with Stevie Ray that may answer some of your questions. No, other guitarist do not play this way, it is due to his loss of sight and it is probably easier to keep your entry points on the guitar more precise.
A beautiful musician and soul taken too soon. RIP Jeff.
I didn’t know that dude was an actual musician and he is dope AF. He’s in Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze! he kind of played himself, he was a blind musician in the bar.
The scriptwriter had seen him play, and wrote the part with him in mind. Producers going, where do we find a blind guitarist who plays sitting down? Well,.......
Jeff Healey is a Canadian icon. Yes, he is blind.
He lost his sight to ocular cancer when he was one. His father gave him a guitar when he was three and had a hard time reaching the strings so he put it on his lap.
He developed his own style of playing. Stevie Ray Vaughan said he Jeff pushed him to play better.
Being Canadian sometimes you get stuck behind the Maple curtain and not as well known in the U.S.
He was in the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze. Unfortunately he lost his battle with cancer when he was in his 40's. This would be considered Blues Rock. Jeff also played the trumpet and jazz..
Back in the day bands played a number of different genres and a fused different styles together.
The way Jeff plays the guitar is like/how people read Braille, so it makes sense for his to hold the guitar like that too. Just really realized that.
Saw him live waaaay back in the 90s in Dallas. When he played the guitar behind his head, we all went nuts!!!
Was one helluva performance. ❤
He played with SRV also. The saxophonist in the band is David Sanborne and he just passed away. He was legendary
Jeff was an AMAZING and GIFTED blind musician who FELT music in his SOUL!! What a talent, taken from the world too soon...RIP.🎶❤✌
I'm a musician who grew up in Toronto and my bandmates and I would do the weekly Jam tour around the area. One Sunday night we were at the Dirty Berts jam in Markham, which borders Toronto. It was just a downstairs banquet style room in a plaza. Nothing to rave about. All of a sudden the room started buzzing when Jeff and his small entourage came in and took a table near the stage. Of course he got up on stage and we got to enjoy Jeff for over a half hour that night. One of those memorable occasions I will never forget. The next time I saw him was when he and Jeff Beck opened for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Why do all the good ones die so early?
He was such a great artist. This one is for sure blues but he and his band were blues/rock for the most part. RIP Jeff!❤️🔥🫶🏻✌🏻
Kind of a blessing of RUclips that these legends can never be truly gone as long as their performances survive.
While my guitar gently weeps. His version is insane!
It's called T-A-L-E-N-T, Brother. Talent. The man was a true blue prodigy. Jeff was a musical genuis. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Hendrix and this boy are among the greatest guitar heroes of all time. Got to be among the top three most highly ranked individuals . On another level. Thank you for this little reminder of what Jeff Healey could do. Thank goodness that although J.H. is no longer on the planet, we are blessed to have his recordings to enrich our musical experience. Jeff is still maling music and putting smiles on listeners faces even unto this very day. WE LOVE JEFF HEALEY FOREVER!!! Peace and love, y'all. Shoutout from this old, longhaired rocker in the mountains of East Tennessee. Keep-a-rockin, Fam. Later.
The piano player was Doctor John and he played a few styles of music and was a master of his trade also.
I sang with him one night, in the Pub. He was in Monaco for the World Music Awards and he just fancied going out for a beer the night before the show. He and his Irish manager came to our bar, had a few beers, and just sat down at the piano for an hour. We kinda took turns singing with him, loads of Blues standards.
He got into more jazz later in his career, but here he was playing blues. The dude on piano was Dr John, a famous New Orleans jazz musician.
He was actually a jazzer first. Then he veered into blues-rock as a guitarist, and returned to jazz when he was older.
This is blues-rock. The harder, more aggressive way of playing the blues. It feels at home in both blues and rock playlists.
Right from the start, from the rock'n'roll era onwards, at the core of rock music you'll find the blues.
The dude playing bass behind him was in charge of keeping Jeff safe. Jeff had a habit of feeling the music so strong that he would stand up and all around while playing.. this dude had to make sure Jeff didn't talk if the stage, and to kind of direct him to his chair... Great talent.
😂 The man you’re mentioning as THE DUDE is legendary bass icon Marcus Miller
You need to react to SRV and Jeff Healey on stage together at a show in Canada. They performed "Look at Little Sister" in 1987 and the video is on YT from Canada's CBC.
It's soo good!
Yes, thank God for RUclips. Being able to see both new and old artists is a great blessing, as are you and your channel. Jeff Healy was a master of the guitar across many genres.
His cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps is fantastic, as well.
Saw him live in Dallas, back in the 90s. Was one helluva performance! When he played the guitar behind his head, the entire audience went nuts!!! ❤ R I P Jeff
Legendary talent.
Yet another Beatles tune that a musician covered( they were ALL Insired in some way by the Beatles) !
Hard for him to stand and get down and wild on the guitar because he's BLIND!
Yep, saw he & Bonnie Rait at Red Rocks Amphitheatre perform an encore of While my gently weeps 3 days after srv died. They both seemed mentally upset during the show while they both attempted to reach Stevie with their music that night. Wish I had filmed it.
@@Champaign268 Yes!
It was same tour I saw. Bonnie even had Gatemouth Brown with her. The moment of reverence for Stevie was both moving, and heartbreaking.
Will never forget that time. Also wish I had it on film.
Jeff was a very proud Canadian and dearly loved by all of us here in Toronto. A finer gentleman you could never meet and he is a legend here. We miss him dearly.....
I saw Jeff Healey in 1989 at The Misty Moon,Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada A proud Canadian ! RIIP!!
The man was and still is a fantastic entertainer, all us Canadian fans miss him a lot. He made our country proud. RIP Jeff ❤
United States loved him too
he is not. he dies at 41
I had the immense privilege of seeing Jeff in concert three times. Playing live, he was outrageously brilliant!
I don't know how to comment to this but i will try. I believe that he is one of the most underrated guitarist of all time and one of the best..if not the best Canadian guitarist of all time. He will be missed and be forever loved
That is called “feeling the music course thru him”!
Yea man… An absolute SAVANT .. Jeff Healey ..RIP my man.. LEGEND🇨🇦
The host of the show is David Sanborn. He just died a couple of weeks ago, amazing sax player.
May 12th
Had to scroll too far to see this. RIP David 🎷
There’s a live video of Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughan playing together….it’s fantastic!
The person who introduced Jeff in that show was David Sanborn who recently died during this month. He was a fantastic sax player too. RIP
Jeff Healey was a great guitar player & singer. We lost him way too soon! Thankfully we have RUclips! Dr John is on the piano….you should check him out as well. This is blues rock at its finest!
Small story. Back in High School I was in wrestling. My coach won gold in the Olympics in his past. His son was on our team
and was very good, even held back a grade on purpose. I did not like him at all because he thought he was the best.
We had gone to State championships and he wrestled a blind guy and lost. That put smile on my face to see him lose to a blind guy.
First experience seeing someone blind in wrestling and on top of that winning state championships. Jeff Healey reminds me of the
blind wrestler somehow able feel his way through without sight and be on top of his game.
He is blind and Listen to Angel Eyes. He kept a building open for those wanting to come build a name for themselves. He gave everyone a place in his place to play. It is a steel guitar. He is awesome.
It’s not a steel guitar. It’s a normal fender guitar. He just played different to adapt to his disability
I was going to say his voice and some of his guitar playing and his voice sounded like One of the greatest ever Mr Jimmy Hendrix and then he did what Jimmy did and played guitar with his mouth AND he’s blind. What an amazingly talented man, I’ve never heard of him before thanks BP
Omar, Marc and Dr J are killing it. Note that Jeff plays the guitar while standing and without a guitar strap!!
Jeff was the real deal. He played blues/Rock and was trained to play jazz. That's why you hear him play a few jazz licks here and there. He will be missed for a long time. Kurt from Maine
There is a video of him and Steve Ray Vaughan playing together. MAGIC.
I would say this is bluesy rock. This is rock and roll for sure. Jeff is indeed blind, and mind - blowing!!
Blind and one of a kind. A good Canadian guy from Toronto.
I was 14 years old and was able to get into a bar downtown Toronto and I saw him before he blew up. So incredible to say the least. RIP Jeff. Peace out ✌️ ☮️
Such a great guitarist! He was also house band in movie Roadhouse
I once saw rock/blues guitarist jeff healey at Toronto's Ontario Place form a small rotating stage, Ontario places like in Amusement Park bilt on the water. He rocked hard that night lol lol........ Jeff Healey has many hit songs try anything else by him you luv it lots..... he plays the guitar on his lap because at a young age it was to heavy for him to lift up & he just got used to playing it that way. Jeff Healey had his own bar in Toronto where he played and many other people came to play as well.
Ps he also can paly jazz trumpet as well he has another band called the Jazz Wizards.
Watch the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze he is in the film with him Jeff plays guitar to the (door's hit song) Roadhouse Blues
R.I.P. JEFF
I saw him when he toured England, was one of the best concerts I ever seen
Jeff Healey was a legend ... he was remarkable to see in concert especially at small venue... it was magic to watch him perform and react to the crowd... so happy I was able to see him just before he died... true Canadian legend
Yes blind since he was a child and he came down with cancer in his eyes. He loved the blues so he taught himself how to play the guitar in his own very special and the way that only he can. Him and his band are one of the best blues bands of this generation. Truly AMAZING!!!
Piano,, the Incredible Dr John! another rabbit hole.. WHEN HE SAYS.. "Help me doctor"
You have to see him play with Stevie Ray. Stevie loved him!
You just introduced this old woman to Jeff Healey. Thank you!
And sending cyber hugs to you and your family.
Piano player is music legend Dr. John
Jeff was a guitar player's guitar player. I saw him in 1987 in a Vanvouver bar, and every guitar player in the city was there just to see him. They walked out in disbelief. Later, he hosted a jazz radio show for many years which was broadcast across Canada.
YAYYYYYYY YOU FINALLY GOT AROUND TO THIS AWESOMENESS!!! ❤️🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
I feel like he was underrated and underappreciated, he’s on my all time best list no question
One of the truly greats
You asked why you'd never heard of him. in a word... Canadian. so many of our greats got overlooked. His song Angeleyes is one you should check out.
I don't agree that he was overlooked. He was very well known for a period of time.
@@davidroseman4917 no arguement there. He was always in my playlists over the years, and he had real success. It's just that so many Canadian artists, many of whom are super successful all over the world, because they weren't huge in the states, they just don't get the same play time. Makes me sad. Even regionally, we all have people who are household names, but elsewhere.. Not as much. One of the reasons I love reaction videos is seeing people getting exposed to talent they may have missed.
Random list of Canadian artists that are awesome:
Glass Tiger
Platnium Blond
Haywire
Great Big Sea
Luba
Lee Aaron
Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO)
Shania Twain
Anne Murray
Irish Descendents
Hedley (controversial but still some very good songs)
Sass Jordan
Cory Hart
Bryan Adams
... Please add to the list.. Love checking out great artists.
@AndieO Max Webster, Kim Mitchell (Max's guitarist/main-singer); Gowan(Lawrence, now with Styx, his younger brother Terry just joined on bass; went to high school with 'em); Art Bergmann; Payola$; Jane Siberry; Bif Naked; the Odds; Barney Bentall; Kurt Swinghammer; McKenna Mendelson Mainline...probably tons more 🤷🏽
😎🤙🏼🎶❤️✨️🕊
The guy on the piano is New Orleans own Dr John
Bless your heart and soul BP. My twin sister's first born was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma on her 18 month well baby visit. She went thru chemo, but the tumor had enveloped where the blood supply was and could not shrink, so 2 weeks after her 2nd birthday she had a liver transplant. Giving my thanks to God, she is now a 21 year old cancer survivor and we continue to pray cancer does not return.
My uncle was a blues guitarist and he was at Healey's ( He had a bar in downtown Toronto ) when SRV came in and they started jamming. He was sitting three feet away and it was a highlight of his life
I'm so glad you got to experience Jeff Healey. Jeff and Stevie Ray Vaughan were my all time favorite guitarists. Both such talented musicians and both gone too soon, so heartbreaking when these guys passed 💔 May they both RIP 🎸
The guy who introduced him with the sac is David sanborn who died yesterday
The rush of discovering Jeff and the crash of his death and his story can't help but give you pause especially in your circumstance in your own life .
"As the years go passing by" by Jeff Healey you will love. It's all the blues
Jeff taught himself to play brass Coronet to better explore his passion for early Jazz era. He had a popular weekly show on Canadian Broadcast Network dedicated to Jazz genre. A genius.
When you find yourself saying, "I can't", think of this.
I don't know if any one else has said this, but Jeff was also an accomplished jazz trumpet player.
Jeff was given his first guitar at the age of three. His hand was too small to fit around the neck, so this was how he taught himself to play.
Hard core Blues in all it's glory!
Talented musicians!
Jeff Healy- Axe- Vocals - Marcus Miller - Bass - Omar Hakim - Skins - Dr John - Piano
Wife passed from cancer 2 yrs ago.... I feel for ya my man...... Much Love from Widefield.
"It's just how world's this days... we'll get through it guys..."
I know it's just a couple of seconds of this reaction, but i see you and i loved it man...
(i got nothin' more :)
Angel Eyes was my favourite Healey song.
Jeff was a icon that was taken way too early. He was in Roadhouse and sang some of his music. I highly recommend Angel Eyes, beautiful song. I tend to agree more with you in that I always put him in my Blues/Rock genre. With a few exceptions he fits well there. I am trying to remember the song but he and Stevie Ray Vaughn did a duet on it. It was flipping awesome.
Stevie Ray Vaughn and a few others brought attention back to blues when blues was no longer popular at the time. Introduced a whole new generation to it....
Hands down one of the nicest artists as well as a great musician
BP, I am so glad you liked Mr. Healey! He was in Roadhouse as the musician behind the fencing in the bar.
There are actually RUclips videos of Stevie Ray Vaughan AND Jeff Healey. You would love that jam. The song I loved is 'Look at Little Sister'. I highly recommend it.
I seen him in the early 90s, again in 2006, and had tickets to see him 2 weeks after he passed :(
RIP Jeff Healey
We had Jeff’s song Angel Eyes as our first dance at our wedding 31 years ago. Love his voice and writing skills. Yes he is blind and he passed away way too soon. What a treat he was. He held his own when he played with Stevie Ray Vaughn on SVR’s “Look at Little Sister”. Love your reactions, thanks for sharing.
There's all kinds of Rock - Rock n Roll - Classic Rock - Soft Rock - Punk Rock - Metal Rock - Hair band Rock - Country Rock - Blues Rock - New Wave Rock
I was just watching the original "Road House" last night. Love that Jeff was in it. "The name is Dalton!"
If you watch carefully his left hand Jeff uses his left pinky to find his position on the neck of the guitar and counts the bars , if he misses his place , he'll slide to the end and counts back. he's so good it happens so quick
BTW This was David Sanborn's music show. He just passed a week ago. Great Jazz sax player.
I think it's safe to say that there's a lot more than five guitarists claimed to be among the "top five guitarists ... ever!"
You need to watch him and SRV playing the song "LITTLE SISTER". it is absolutely amazing!!
Jeff Healey was a WorldWide PHENOM.......& we are PROUD to have him be Canadian.
Always enjoy your content. Being as old as I am and a teen in the 70s. The majority of music during this era was a fusion of Rock/Blues, Rock/Jazz, Rock/Country so on. Most groups strived for their own sound. Jeff Healy was mostly Blues/Rock, and absolutely great.
His 1995 live performance in Germany of As the Years Go Passing By is not to be missed. Unforgettable, bluesy and raw.
The piano player is Dr. John, you got to check him out. Awsome!
Congrats on finding Jeff Healey! I was lucky enough to see him at Manchester University UK in 2007. Truly awesome live and what a band he had. Besides rocking out he had some great gentler songs Love "Macon Georgia Blue" Definately at the Blues end of Jazz..
I remember going to see Jeff many times in and around the Toronto bar scene. I recall him being one of the rarest acts that people would actually watch and listen. Most time bar bands were usually ignored.
His catalogue of music is brilliant.
The Jeff Healey Band released their awesome album "See the Light" in 1988 which, aside from the title track you heard, featured the hit single "Angel Eyes". While the band was recording this album, they were also recording for the soundtrack of the classic film Roadhouse, starring Patrick Swayze as professional bouncer, James Dalton. Healey, who was only 22 years old at the time, also starred in the movie. He played Cody, lead singer for the "Double Deuce" house band (ie, Jeff's actual band). Healey also had numerous acting scenes with Swayze in the movie.
RIP Jeff Healey and Patrick Swayze....Two Legends!
you gotta keep on this blues road! You've found the elite level, here's another, Freddie King - Have You Ever Loved a Woman. Also Jeff did blues, blues rock and jazz.
Freddie King is my favorite "old" blues artist. Albert and B.B. get all the love, but Freddie just does it for me. 💯
@@whome1299 agreed, he truly is the King of blues 😀
Im so glad you've found Jeff! He was amazing!!!
