"Any kind of art is about the creation of tension, and then resolution. And in music, it's more subtle how it happens, and it's more esoteric how it happens, but it's the same thing: you create a tension... and then you release it." I absolutely LOVE this quote from the Copeland interview as the heightening and smashing of tension is EXACTLY what I've always loved about the Lofty Castle music, in particular, for years.
That's a tough one. IMO the original soundtrack was essentially the same set of songs alternating leitmotifs with a slight atmospheric change depending on the levels setting. The second and third games, you could tell Copeland started to better understand what he was there to do, and made music MUCH more distinguishable depending on the setting. Like the homeworld soundtracks vs the cutscene soundtracks vs the level soundtracks are much more distinguished
I actually like the change in tone in Dark Passage. I think it does a good job reflecting the theme of the level. It starts of kind of spooky and low-key in the darkness, but as you progress through the level the lights that turn the scary monsters into puppies is teaching you not to be afraid of the dark, so as your confidence builds up so does the music, and bt the end of it you're fearlessly charging through the darkness with a kickass guitar and drums backing you up.
Stone hill literally sends me to another dimension of nostalgia that I can’t even fathom. Still trying to process it. But never had nostalgia like that before. It was like I traveled back to being 6 years old full of wonder and innocence. Thanks Copeland.
Sitting here, listening to each track right beside each other, it becomes so clear how connected every level's music is to their respective home world. Doing so made every location feel connected, but at the same time totally unique. Copeland. you absolute genius.
Yes! Charmed ridge in honourable mentions! Always felt it was kind of underappreciated since it's in the same world as the much more popular Fireworks factory
Charmed Ridge is insane. Such a throwback to the first game, and such a funky whimsical groove. Honestly imo Spyro 3 is the most polarizing in terms of the music - has some of my favorite tunes from the whole franchise, but then others I don't care for that much again
Btw, like Lofty, Hurricos was also based on a movie soundtrack, Simpatico. Or the other way round, can't be sure, the movie was released the same year as Spyro 2. It definitely sounds almost the same as in the game.
Dry Canyon has grown on me a lot over time. It's really subdued, but the small intricacies along the way are so good - the keyboard flourishes appearing along the way, the chord change at some points - and of course the downright beautiful breakdown in the middle, gives me chills.
Nothing compares to finally getting to Gnasty's Loot the first time, after finally opening that mysterious final dragon head, and hearing this music. Perfectly captures finally getting to fly and just rushing through treasure and chasing down the final thieves and the dopamine rush first experiencing it.
For me, it's Spyro: Ice Caverns, Dark Hallow, Toasty/Gnorc Gnexus, Beast Makers, Lofty Castle Spyro 2: Hurricos, Breeze Harbor, Metropolis, Winter Tundra, Autumn Plains, Magma Cone, Aquaria Towers, Skelos Badlands Spyro 3: Cloud Spires, Buzz's dungeon (it's just so uncomfortable and kind of sad sounding), Evening Lake, Fireworks Factory, Honey Speedway, Crystal Islands, Harbor Speedway They're pretty much all bangers, but things I'd choose to have in a playlist is probably these ones. Though if I had to pick an ultra-fave I would listen to all the time, Ice Cavern and for relaxing, Winter Tundra/Autumn Plains Oh and special place for the usually unmentionables outside the main trilogy, but Enter the Dragonfly did have some decent music that was much more in keeping with the tone the trilogy set. Particular fondness for Cloud 9, Thieves Den, Volcano Slide, Honey Marshes, Rainbow Speedway, and Dragonfly Dojo.
Stewart Copeland, and Mick Gordon are easily my 2 fave composers for video game soundtracks. Copeland for fun/memorable compositions, and Mick for Just Kick ass craziness
Spyro music is great because it always keeps this tone of exploration and wonder while adapting to the tone of the level. You always feel like there's some secret to be discovered or some thing lurking just around the corner. The way Steven Spyro fits in those common motifs and adapts them to the tone of the world is masterful imo.
I'm a newer viewer and had no clue Dayo has music theory knowledge until watching this video. I'm a music performance major and it's great to know a fellow Spyro fan that also understands how the music works. You made such good points too! I didn't hear some of the basslines of some of these songs until this video, so thanks Dayo! Great content, I'm gonna go check out your Spyro 2 tier list next! 😁
4 minutes in you've already read my mind and done a shout-out to Charmed Ridge, a track I love precisely because it is the MOST Spyro 1 track in both sequels! Would love to hear your thoughts on the 2 sequels (I think their ice levels are all top-tier, maybe Copeland loves ice level vibes!) Great video, I feel very vindicated in my taste in these tracks
Thanks Sam, glad you liked it. Also l, I listened and reviewed the recent spyro album (which includes spyro 2 and 3 music) on my patreon. Either way, cheers!
How the fuck has LITERALLY NO ONE mentioned how Godly Fireworks Factory from Spyro 3 is? That oriental flourish at the start, the slow buildup, the ninja-like melodies. Combined with how funky it is, it's perfect for working out on the treadmill to.
Your musical insight on this soundtrack is really interesting! As a life long Spyro fan and a musician myself I'd be really interested in your thoughts on the other 2 games in the original trilogy!
Dark Hollow is my all time favorite Spyro, if not video game theme. And, you're right, there is definitely some polyrhythmic fun happening in there, with triplets and duplets happening simultaneously. For context, I am a music teacher too! Love the musical knowledge you spread throughout, rock on!
“Sunny flight” was done dirty!! D-tier!! Lmao Such a wicked drum track, and the first of so many callbacks to the OG Spyro chord progression with the slammed guitar chords. Definitely one of the best tracks in the game, but I guess that’s what PTSD will do to you
Dayoman, I have only just discovered you and as a fan of Spyro music myself I am very grateful for this video! I have now subbed! Metalhead totally deserves S-tier... but otherwise, yeah I do pretty much agree with you!
Im shocked I didnt really hear much more on Toasty and Gnorc Nexus but the thing I find great about the track matching in those two is the fact that their portals share a certain feature being the dragon heads which open up.. I do like how it is very end of the beginning for Toasty and Artisans but then the beginning of the end in Gnorc Nexus and although it does give off slightly different vibes it still has that sorta "Dont let your guard down" vibe to it and I will say if this song ever appeared the way it does in a Souls-Like Game I am gonna be scared for my life.. XD I think another thing great about it is familiarity.. Not saying this is my favourite, I wouldnt even know where to start for which is my favourite.. All songs across the trilogy are my faves.. XDD Also I hope you do more tier lists in the future and maybe hopefully the tracks for both 2 and 3 (seperately ofc).. I really like hearing your opinions and find them hella relaxing to just lay and watch/listen to.. ^u^
Even after 20 or so years the spyro soundtrack is unmatched. It’s my background music while I work. My only criticism is that the peace keeper theme always breaks my concentration
I remember listening to frou frou's album "details" while playing through 1, and it just made sense. especially "only got one" over lofty castle. good high school memories.
Please give me the link to your remake "Space Caves" cuz I couldn't find it anywhere. Also, I've been binge-watching your channel lately, and I can't express how entertaining and diverse your videos are. Just keep it up!!!
@@Dayoman You're very welcome, and yes, I do play the vast majority of the Crash series (including Twinsanity), plus Spyro 1, 2, 3, EtDF, & Hero's Tail.
I know you don’t usually make content on them but I’d love to see you do this for the other 2 games. Copeland got way more experimental for 2 and especially 3.
i like summer forest more than the other 2 because of nostalgia and never having the time to play Spyro 2 as kid. was always still in summer forest until 4 years ago
Ntsc high caves is just tree tops but slow down while the pal version is original. It makes me wonder if Ntsc high caves was meant to be a tree tops alternative version.
When Stewart Copeland commented on how he made music in that one interview, the phrase where he says "...so that it can survive repeated listenings" that always stuck with me and it's 100% true. Also you didn't let the drums kick in on Cliff Town that's the best part of the track, same when the organs kick in as well.
Old Head on his music ish sheesh Autumn Plains was mine, too. Winter Tundra is nice… and after time Summer Forest is so nice. All of the Homeworlds were just awesome.
Awesome of you to do this Dayo, absolutely loved every bit of this video. Your theory knowledge was very insightful throughout, and it was a lot of fun to learn more about the polyrhythms and other intricacies of the game we all love so much. 💜
Stone Hill reminds me of my best friend growing up, we would always play the original Spyro in his house when we were kids. He unfortunately passed away last August at the age of 28, RIP Mark
Dark Hallow is my ultimate S tier as well, Spyro the Dragon was my first console video game, and the music is something you just hear and think 'Spyro'. Should also mention I love that 'eeeee' in Ice Cavern, creepy but gives the extra feeling like you're in an huge icebox. Reignited really took away some of the nuance with the original Spyro music.
I'm a huge fan of the soundtrack, and it's great to see your input and appreciation of the music and attention to detail, especially as a musician. ❤️ 34:35 ughh, you skipped the best part of the track imo, it's a shame. The melody there is really unique and gives off nostalgia.
I think Midnight Mountain Home is my favorite Spyro 3 track. Not quite as funky as Midday Garden, but I got hyped anytime the chorus section came up. The synth + organ mix is like eating a sour patch kid 🤣 Not to mention, you get to chase money bags down while listening to this banger. Definitely one of the most memorable Spyro moments in the franchise Overall, though, the 2 and 3 soundtracks can’t hold a candle to the first game’s. Not that they’re bad, because they’re great in their own rights, but Spyro 1’s is a straight-up masterpiece. I still use it as “focus-up” music for studying/work

I like it that way, thx
and he eventually did, very cool
Not a Single soundtrack from Spyro 1 does even deserve to be in D Tier
Always liked Hurricos in Spyro 2 and Frozen Altars in 3. But Spyro 1 has the best soundtrack of the three by far, not a single bad track on it.
Frozen Altars is a great choice love how calm and catchy it is
That's a tough one. IMO the original soundtrack was essentially the same set of songs alternating leitmotifs with a slight atmospheric change depending on the levels setting.

Quick question, when are we getting the tier list for enemy sounds made upon their death?
Oooo that's a good one next!
Those little guys in Metalhead
"Ayabliabululalluoh!" *horns* "Pthyaoooww!"
Shout out to Evening lake from spyro 3. My personal favorite from the series. Feels ethereal, peaceful and somber at the same time.
Damn stewart really made a timeless soundtrack, thousands of replays and i still want to listen to many songs more than once lol
Good lord the “Justascxipture” in the chat was insufferable a handful of times LOL!
Ambient music is incredible, I love those from Spyro 2!
Having a drink or two and ranking spyro 2 and 3 songs with you is my wish for Christmas
Spyro music has always had a special place in my heart. Thank you for making this video ❤️
The three world songs of Spyro 2 are so relaxing. Just missed summer forest.

53:18 Misty Bog's theme is particularly noteworthy as the end credits theme for all three games.
I love this soundtrack so much, its so cool to hear your musical knowledge insights on it. Would looove a breakdown of 2 and 3 like this too!!
Stuart Copeland is the only member of the police not to have shot an innocent person.

Same here. Let's make a baby.
@@SCHMALLZZZ ew wtf

Yes yes and yes❤❤❤❤ I agree, also in Spyro 2 I must add the Zephyr song, it's iconic and so beautiful and cozy ❤
I’d love to see Spyro 2&3 tier lists! Absolutely loved this video! People ask me what my taste in music is and I just think of this sound track 😂
You can't leave out Zephyr on the honorable mentions bro.
Good song
I like how “optimistic” the title screen song is. It’s such a fantastic prep/intro song to the journey the player’s about to experience
My top 5 favorites
5. Ice Cavern
4. Ice Cavern

Spyro 2: glimmer, idol spings, magma cone. Spyro 3: main title, sunny villa, icy peak, crystal islands, dino mines
Jacques is and has always been my favorite track from Spyro 1, followed by Dark Hallow and Tree Tops
my absoloute banger ist Fireworks Factroy from spyro 3
I love midnight mountain from S3

Should've put the union guy pic from the level tier list on stream to keep us company.
